This is the best book I have read in a long while. This is exactly whats happening in our world today and people need to know this truth. I was thrilled to see that Ms Gangi could write such an eye opener about holistic health. Connecting the body, mind and spirit in a natural way to heal all three. I found the section about children was even relevant to me today in my later years. It has been such a exciting book packed full of knowledge and insight. This one goes to all my children and grandchildren for Christmas this year!

This book continues where Book One left off and explains in greater detail the whys and hows to self-empowerment. Rayna's writing is concise and poetic and provokes emotional responses that lead you from your mind and body into your heart and soul, and you just feel that what she says is Truth. In a world of medications and operations, depression, sexual dysfunction, degenerative disease and violent children, Forget the Cures, Find the Cause, Book Two - The Circle is an inspiration as well as a workable tool in helping us to reclaim and regain our God given right to health and happiness. A perfect gift for everyone, especially parents and grandparents as we are the keepers of our children and our next generation.

If you're a firm believer in modern-day medicine and have no interest in taking care of your own body, then this book is not for you. But many people today are beginning to question the ability of their physicians to treat their whole body rather than just a set of symptoms, and they're looking for ways to take their health care into their own hands.

Rayna M. Gangi, a holistic healer with native American roots, begins this volume by providing considerable evidence that today's children are suffering much greater health risks than those of several decades ago, with the increase in vaccinations and behavior modification drugs. Chemicals in common household products and in the water they drink expose them to numerable toxins. And their diets are suffering due to soft drinks, sugary products and artificial sweeteners and colors.

She also explores the over-vaccination of pets and the poor quality of most pet foods. While the author doesn't mention the food poisoning which recently devastated many pet owners, that incident certainly does make one question what our pets are really eating.

As the circle implies, our journey begins with childhood, and this book wouldn't be complete unless it traveled the full arc into aging and death. The author touches on the concept of living life in circle, and living in harmony with the earth and its cycles. In a well-written and well-documented book, she shows us where we can make changes in our lives, so we can experience better health and happiness.

Rayna M. Gangi writes with warmth and compassion. She encourages us to ask questions, and to notice how our bodies feel when we bombard them with chemicals and mistreat them. Ultimately, she sees a world where we all respect our bodies, our environment, and each other.

This is more than a cookbook, it a a guide to everything about food that you should know. Rachel and Don have done a terrific job in preparing a comprehensive handbook. The recipes are great. My favorite part is the fact that they give you variations on each recipe, plus they are easy to modify for yourself.
Also, the information on how we should be eating has been researched and presented well. If nothing else, rereading those sections will keep you to this "diet". They prove that it isn't really a diet, but a lifestyle choice. They also provide many tips on where to get hard to find products, or products at a lower price. The kitchen tips have saved me time and money. I am an experienced cook, and found several common sense things in the book that I never even thought of. The down to earth style is very informative.
This is the book for anyone looking for a healthier way to live. The results I have seen, both in myself and others, have been tremendous. I recommend it to anyone!

I can't thank Rachel and Don Matesz enough for putting all of their incredible knowledge and expertise into this fantastic book. It is much more than a cookbook, it is a way of living. Their thorough introductory chapters explain the diet that we as human beings were designed to eat. Then they move on to how to set up a natural foods kitchen, giving an extensive list of recommendations on foods and kitchen tools. Just these two sections of the book would make it worth the price. But then there are the tons of EXCELLENT, EASY (no ridiculously long prep work), and TASTY recipes, which are all grain-free and dairy-free. When I follow this diet I feel just FANTASTIC! No more stomach bloating. No more allergies. My skin looks great.

Another thing that I love about this book is the down-to-earth tone that is used throughout. Don and Rachel are REAL people and admit their past mistakes (they talk about their problems with their past macrobiotic and vegetarian diet). And their enthusiasm for eating well shines throughout.

My only criticism? I want another book ASAP! I would absolutely love it if they wrote another book dedicated to feeding babies and children. I hope it is a project they'll consider one day.

If you only buy one book today make it the Garden of Eating. You won't be sorry.

As the mother of a child with food allergies and a health food fanatic, I cannot find one thing "wrong" with this book. Which is crazy because I can usually find something absent or misinforming in all cookbooks.

The recipes are stellar and easy. My family loves everything I have made from this book.

I reccomend it to ALL parents going gluten/dairy/soy/corn free. You must have this book. Not just for the recipes but for the priceless information about your food as well.

My father gave me Gracefully for mother's day. I then went to see Valerie Ramsey at the Tattered Cover in Denver when she did a book signing there. I was so impressed! She is wonderfully open and honest about her own life and how she and Heather Hummel came to write Gracefully. I was inspired to read the book cover to cover! The book is so easy to read - simple to understand and effortless to apply the concepts contained therein to one's own life. This is a book that would be perfect for anyone. May I only grow older (I am 41) as gracefully as Valerie Ramsey has!

The Balance of Beauty

Review Date: 2008-05-25
Valerie Ramsey understands the true wisdom of beauty--that even though it is outwardly visible, its true source comes from within. Perhaps that is why all treatise on beauty should be written from the perspective of someone, like Ramsey, who has lived a life that allows for true beauty to flourish. Aging is bounded by time, beauty is not. And so, Ramsey, in prose that is clean, compelling, and--most of all--entirtely applicable, demonstrates what is so obvious and yet, for our youth obsessed world, often overlooked in terms of how to cultivate beauty, grace, and soulfulness throughout our lives.

I found this book to be so easy to read with practical useful advice on creating a life that you want. It was inspirational at the same time, making me reaffirm my beliefs that one can accomplish whatever one puts one's mind to. I have passed this on to my mother and recommended to my girlfriends and aunts, but the over-riding message of this book is applicable to both genders. Worth the read. I took away tips to apply in daily life as well as future planning/dreaming.

This guide was an incredible help to me while I was going through the protocol. It has charts, instructions, guidelines, lists of what to buy and where to buy them, listings of very helpful websites, plus so much more. It also has the complete manuscript of Dr. Simeon's Pounds and Inches which you must have a copy of if you plan to do this protocol. It is very much worth the money. I even bought a second one for my doctor, who knew nothing about this diet. I would highly recommend this book.

I am on my second session of HCG shots on the Simeons Protocol. I lost 30 pounds first session and need to lose 20 more. I'm sorry I didn't have this guide the first session - it is EXTREMELY helpful. In addition to explaining everything in easy-to-understand detail, this book clarifys the foods you can eat during the 3-6 weeks following the shots (Simeons was a bit vague regarding Sugars and Starches). The book is worth twice the price.

WONDERFUL. Read before you make your decision on tubes!!!!!

Review Date: 2008-05-23
OK, I do not do reviews that often. But, this book needed one!! My son had 4 double ear infections between 3-5 months of age. We met with the ear doctor on 5/7. She said he needed tubes asap b/c of some hearing loss due to the fluid in his ears. We set the surgery for tubes up for 5/15.

I got the book that afternoon and read it on the 7th and 8th. I scheduled an appointment for the doctor and I to sit down and talk on the 9th b/c I decided that maybe tubes was not the answer....yet. After meeting, the doctor was still set on tubes. I thought about it over the weekend and on Monday 5/12 I cancelled the appointment for the 16th. It is now the 23rd and the fluid has gone away in one ear completely and the other still has fluid but it has only been a few weeks.

This book not only tells different things to do to alleviate the problems it also tells you the risks involved. The doctor did not tell us these things and when I brought them up, she downplayed them. Two of the risks were weakening of the eardrum in up to 40% (I think) of the patients which could lead to ear drum rupture later in life. My husband had had 3 ruptured ear drum incidents and he had tubes as a child. Hmmmmmm. The other was issues with scar tissue hardening around the incision. I don't know if I am explaining that right. I don't have the book in front of me. Anyway - they were serious issues.

So, I am having his ears monitored for 4-8 weeks and if they don't get better, I will have the tubes put in. But, one is better already.

READ THE BOOK BEFORE YOU PLAN THE SURGERY!!!!!

This book reviews many different alternative medicines and therapies for healing ear infections. It covers the over all health and nutritional needs of children and how they relate to the healing process of ear infections. The homeopahtic information was a bit generic and left me needing more information on which medicines to choose from. Over all I found it to be a very good book.

My 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with reduced hearing 7 months ago; turned out she had fluid in both ears. The ENT (ears, nose, throat specialists) put her on antibiotics. Did nothing. Then we went away for a month and upon our return, we had her checked again. Fluid had decreased in 1 ear but was still strong in the other. ENT feared it would impact her learning (the decreased hearing) and lead to ear infections (they couldn't believe she hadn't had any, to my knowledge, since she was about 2). In the meantime, my 1.5 year old son also had 1 ear infection after the other, and when we returned from our trip he also was checked - fluid in both ears, plus a lingering infection they treated with antibiotics. They strongly urged me to get tubes in their ears. Our niece had them inserted and my sister as well as everyone else said it's no big deal, the worst part is seeing your child unconscious as it's general anaesthesia, but they bounce right back. I made the surgery appt and then my dad sent me an article from the Wall Street Journal citing studies that concluded the tube surgery is done way too often, and unnecessarily. Since this was coming from my very conservative dad, I thought I'd better question establishment. So I got this book, "Healing Childhood Ear Infections" by Dr. Schmidt. After 1 chapter I canceled the surgery. Instead, I got them into chiropractic care, removed dairy (cows milk) from their diets, and took them to a naturopath who put them on 3 supplements: minerals for their immune systems, and something to thin the mucous. Today I took my daughter to the ENT for a check-up (1 month after trying alternative treatments) and they were shocked - no more fluid, perfect hearing! You should have seen how proud she was when they told us. My son still remains to be checked, but knock on wood, has been infection-free since I started all this. The kids love the chiropractor - my son screams when his turn is over - and there are plenty of dairy alternatives out there (soy is also to be avoided or at least moderated but my son loves goats milk yoghurt). The supplements mix in with their juices so they don't even notice them. Anyway, I'm telling you this so that you question your own kids' treatments. According to this book, once a kid is on antibiotics it's very likely he'll develop another infection (ear) soon thereafter. In most countries, they're not even prescribed unless the baby is under 1 or has had a high fever (over 101) for 3 days. Plus, this book stated that most US children have a very nutrient-defficient diet and in particular lack minerals such as magnesium & zinc, which are very important for the immune system. Hopefully you can all benefit from this - and although I don't know which of my 3 forms of treatment did the trick with my daughter, I'm going to continue all 3. Thank goodness for this book, which gave me the tools and the courage to try safer alternatives.

And I have more energy, am more mentally alert and upbeat than I ever have been. The book is very motivational. The rules and guidelines for the diet are spread throughout the book so you must read all before starting. Only criticisms are that it's wordy and most of the recipes are bland, but I believe it's the best of all the books the Heller's have written.

This is an excellent, simply written, but well researched, book on the dangers of bad carbs. I found it extremely enlightening and wondered if it was more than coincidental that Dr. Barry Sears, writes in an amazingly similar vein, in his book "Enter The Zone". It seems that more and more scientists, and doctors, are discovering that we suffer from an overabundance of bad carbs in our eating, and it's also imbalanced versus protein and fat intake.I would heartily recommend this book, and for more scientific corroborative data read "Enter the Zone". Combine this with the sensible exercise program outlined in "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips of EAS Inc., and you will do yourself a very large favour.

I started becoming interested in the use of herbs in 1999. I literally bought a dozen books on herbs, vitamins and natural remedies. This is the only book I have kept. It is my number one source for herb information. I also love the format of it. Not too wordy...just the facts and what you need to know. I would love to see this book updated and released as a newer edition but still wouldn't trade my older edition for a million dollars. Seriously, it's just that good of a tool in learning and using herbs.

Some time before the "great herb" rush, I purchased this book to use for combatting a few bodily irregularities. I loved and have often referred back to it over the years. The cross-referencing of the book is good. You can look for a specific herb (as this section is alphabetized) or you can look for a specific ailment.

The only portions I was a little disappointed with were the section pertaining to formulas; I think there should have been one for each ailment in the book (and this section should've followed the ailment sections and not the herb section). Additionally, I think the section listing which herbs contained which vitamin should've also shown what each vitamin is known to do for the body.

Otherwise, this is one of those books you won't ever loan (because you'll never see it again).

Penny Royal's reverse look-ups are a great education

Review Date: 2005-01-11
One invaluable thing about this book is the reverse look-ups. In one section you can look up any given herb and see the list of what ailments it can ease. In another section you can look up a health problem and read the list of herbs that are useful for that symptom or illness. This style of reverse reference is a godsend when you're under pressure with a sick child.

Another advantage of this book is that it gave me an almost effortless familiarity of herbs and their uses that has served me well in the long run. It's not the kind of book you "read" per se. It's the kind of book you leaf through for answers whenever there's a health problem in your family. Over time, simply by repeated exposure to the herbs and symptoms lists, it all begins to stick in your mind and you become more adept without really noticing.

This book was a solid gold asset to me all through my daughter's childhood. Rather than rely on doctors to feed her antibiotics and drugs, I raised her on dietary adjustments for allergies and fed her herbs and raw honey for illness. (She was a lamb about taking what to me were horrible concoctions - as long as I opened the capsules and mixed the contents in honey. I used raw honey for its antibiotic properties.)

While this might not be the book you'd use to deepen an existing knowledge of herbs, it's the one you'll call a true friend when it comes to quickly prescribing herbal remedies for yourself and your family. The nurse who monitored our slow but steady progress as I painstakingly healed my daughter of chronic ear infection told me that most parents just let the doctors do the operation to install the grommet - sometimes repeatedly. She was impressed at what natural remedies can do for the stereotypical childhood illness. I told her I owed my powers of healing to this book.

I always seem to be "embarrased" by having this book around, because at first glance, it looks like a very beginner style book. As a practicing herbalist, I do not want to give the impression that I am a beginner, by having this book around, but darn it, it's a damn good book. Although it is not a scholarly, or research type text, it is by far one of the easiest to read herbals written. It is written in a very organized fashion, with a large selection of herbs and their uses cataloged in an extremely convenient format. It's a wonderful book for the beginner, and a great book for even more advanced herbalists who need quick fingertip information!

This book is the most comprehensive yet easy to follow program on the subject of inner cleansing. I like that he's not preaching or self serving, but very clear and to the point about cleaning out the "toxic sludge," that we all have, as result of eating bad food. And, it doesn't require any fancy or obscure potions or pills -- just good, wholesome foods like fresh fruit/vegetable juices. Its in this book that I learn about the healing power of fresh (raw) garlic and the importance of including it into your daily cleasing. A must have for all.

If you follow the instructions in this booklet you have a very excellent chance of cleansing your body and becoming pain free. It worked for me. But you have to be willing to follow through. It leads you to a healthy way of eating and juicing and better health....plus weight loss. It is fabulous. I have bought 5 to give away as Christmas gifts.

Carlson Wade is a medical nutrition reporter who has completed 26 books on natural healing. In his book, Inner Cleansing, you will learn about the why and how of cleaning out the "sludge" that accumulates in our bodies. How does it get there? We live in a toxic world. Between air pollution, additives to our water supply, additives to our foods, dyes, colorings, preparation methods, stress, etc. the modern person has no choice but to ingest, breathe or come into contact with various toxins and other problematic items. These in turn cause premature aging, aches and pains, fatigue, heart problems, high blood pressure and a variety of other symptoms.
The book offers techniques to cleanse yourself of these toxins. The techniques are simple and the things you need are readily available. Unlike other programs for detoxification, this one does not require months to complete. After only a couple of days you should feel the difference. If you are having a nagging problem or just not feeling like yourself these days, this book may have the answers for you. If it doesn't work for you then you have lost nothing, if it does work then you have regained a better life. I will say that I often feel better after a regular cleansing program and am much more active than most of my friends my age.

I also found this cookbook years ago at the library and was extremely impressed with the selection of recipes. I can still remember how delicious the Roasted Veggie Soup with Garlic was. I too mourned the fact that it was no longer available to purchase. Then I happened to try to locate it on line. Amazon.com came through again. I just ordered a copy through a bookseller and can't wait to make that soup and many other recipes again!

He took this cookbook with him when he moved out...It was the only one I truly loved cooking from. The instructions were easy to follow, didn't demand any obscure ingedients, were flavorful *AND* healthy... Maybe if they see these letters, they'll reprint this wonderful cookbook.

I bought this book through the mail and it is awesome! My friends keep borrowing it and it's always somewhere else. Some of my friends would BUY this book if it were available. AND I would give this cookbook for a gift IF it were available. The Live Longer cookbook has great pictures and easy to follow recipes and every one that I have used has been delicious. I sure do hope that it is reprinted sometime soon.

This is a health/fitness book with an emphasis on strength training. Written by a doctor who is a nutrition consultant and a personal fitness consultant to Hollywood celebrities, it dispenses valuable facts and tips on nutrition and exercise routines.

Part 1 tells us the basics of nutritional science. Dr Lydon gives us just the correct dosage of facts and figures to keep us informed. She also debunks some fad diets and nutritional myths. There's nothing groundbreaking or sensational here, but just some honest and scientific facts. Only a few supplements are recommended - nothing exotic or amazing. Dr Lydon distinguishes herself from other authors of anti-aging books with a section on exercise by showing that she really knows her field.

Part 2 is a prescription for a strong and shapely self. Again, Dr Lydon dispels strength training myths about women turning into hulks after a few workouts. Encouraging muscle hypertrophy is not just about looks and vanity. It also helps keep metabolic rate up (hence help weight loss), reduce risk of osteoarthritis and even lower blood pressure.

After extolling the merits of strength training, Dr Lydon goes on to help design a routine. She begins with basics going into terminology like strip sets, drop sets, ascending, descending sets etc. Even for those not new to strength training, this has a few useful tips on how to get more mileage out of a workout. A few safe supplements are recommended. We're also warned against overtraining and exericise addiction.

The book then zooms in on body parts, muscle groups and gives tiips that even experienced bodybuilders will find valuable. The appendices offer a good reference for calorific values and glycemic indices of various foods. There are also exercise tables offering a guide for workout routines.

This is an excellent book on fitness and healthy living which I would recommend to any friend, male or female, who is interested in better health and physique. In an age when sensational, "revolutionary", misleading and unorthodox ideas consistently win the hearts of readers and get into the bestselling list, more factual, concise and honest books like this should be promoted.

This book is a great start for women who want to loose weight. As many reviewers have stated the author understands where you are coming from because she has been there. She has developed a plan that works. It's a good book but I found it to be boring in some sections. This is a great start for women who want to loose weight the proper way and have never dieted before.

Great book!

I was familiar with Dr Lydon's work as a columnist for Oxygen magazine, & was impressed enough with her writing to purchase this book.
First of all, Chris Lydon is a medical doctor (MD), so she's not hawking the latest fad. This book presents facts, & the research to back it up.
I really like the way Dr Lydon explains why she takes a certain viewpoint e.g. why liquid creatine should not be your preferred option. The point by point review of important points to remember at the end of each segment is also great.
All in all, I found it to be a thoroughly worthwhile book.

This book surprised me. It's one of the best fitness books I've come across in a long time, and believe me, I've read a lot of them! But it seems to fly under the radar of most people, and I noticed no one has even reviewed it for quite a long time. This is too bad, because this is a truly excellent fitness book. The title is a bit dopey, but the content is top notch, and there is a wealth of great information contained in this compact volume.

Some points that I really noticed are:

1. The book is very intelligently written. She doesn't talk down to you, she doesn't over-explain anything, yet she provides clear and useful details to support what she says. She EXPLAINS things well. Some of it might be too technical for some, but if you wish to skip over details, it's easy to do.

2. The material is organized extremely well. And after each section she puts a capsulized review of what she just discussed. For those who wish to scan thru or just find essential points, this is a useful area. It also helps you find areas you might want to review and re-read in more detail.

3. The sections on targeted exercises were excellent. She describes the best exercises for the various body parts, and explains how to perform the exercises. She also explains how the wrong form can affect the exercise, which I found extremely useful. I learned quite a few things in this area...how I was doing certain exercises completely wrong. I have not yet read any book in which this level of detail was included about form. Everything she writes is clear and very concise.

4. There's a great section in the back of the book giving various routines. This is something I had really wanted to find because I always felt overwhelmed in setting up an appropriate routine for myself.

I learned a lot from this book, and one thing I liked in particular is that so many salient points are combined into one very manageable and readable book. Although Dr. Lydon is an M.D., she states right at the beginning that everything she knows about nutrition and exercise was learned AFTER she finished medical school. She is a fitness buff herself and not only has the medical background, she has applied what she preaches. She is a living example of what she teaches. She is very frank and forthright in her presentation, and this has actually become one of my top favorite exercise/nutrition books....and it makes a very good reference, too. I will be using this book a LOT, and I recommend this book for anyone who is serious about getting into good shape and gaining the knowledge to do so.

Excellent, easy ready and unintimidating

I believe this book is a wonderful gift to bestow amongst your female friends who are interested in living the fitness lifestyle. While Ms. Lydon will break out into medical jargon and get very technical, she also capsizes into bullet format after each detailed section a set of 'cliff notes' for review and easier understanding.

As a doctor, she eschews the woefully mismantled food pyramid and discusses the need for MORE protein and MORE balance. Ms. Lydon does not go for fads and does not believe in starvation tactics. Her section on supplements is helpful as she talks about supps that have real supportive data and what not to waste your money on.

Her training philopshy is basic yet detailed and speaks of the dreaded overtraining syndrome which many enthuasiasts are not careful to pay attention to.

I am extremely impressed with this book and as a personal trainer am likely to buy a few copies to give to clients who would like to walk the walk -- not just talk the talk. Her writing style is charming and upbeat without sounding sophomoric. You get a feeling that she is truly portraying herself and her love of the lifestyle.

I would love to see Ms. Lydon write more books on the subject matter.
