Willett and Skerrett have put it all together in one reader-friendly book. Based on all the solid science out there, their recommendations are what I live by. The thing I really like about this book is that you can see where the big fad diets got their ideas, but you can also see all the other research they neglected in their rush to cash in on the diet book craze.

Finally! A book with some real information I can use to make my diet healthier and remain easy to follow. I only take off a star because a lot of the information was repeated over and over and over. The book could have easily been slimmed down 100 pages without losing any content. I also appreciate the sample menus and recipes in the back. Overall, I think everyone should be forced to read this book- our collective health would be much better!

I DO and WILL EAT MEAT, but still a GOOD BOOK!

I don't have to give anyone a reason for why I eat meat other than because I like it. I'll be having a steak tomorrow! Despite that, this is a great read and I highly recommend it to meat eaters and non meat eaters alike. I was raised on a farm (cattle, chickens, hogs...) I also grew up with more fruits and veggies in my diet in a week than many people have in a lifetime. We grew our own and lots of it. You can absolutely live just as well on a full diet of fruits and veggies alone, but I'll have mine with meat, thanks! But still, get the book.
This is a MUST READ for people who want the truth.

My wife (dairy farmer family background) read and confirmed a small portion from the book, and I became an instant vegetarian. I cheat a little, yet rarely and carefully.

Don't read it unless you're ready to give up eating animals! It's an easy to read, informative look at the dark side of the meat eating US culture and the effects upon our bodies as well as the environment. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is already vegetarian or thinking about becoming one, or for anyone concerned about our environment.

While overly emotional and more than a little biased at times, I found this book a very interesting read. It makes you look differently at the environmental and sociological as well as medical impact of our society's increasing use of beef. I think this book has a lot of information that people should be told, but that doesn't make it into most mass-media
THE book for vegetarians to argue their case

Vegetarians I encounter are of two types. Cultural Veggies like me who grew up in vegetarian households. Then Veggies by choice, who deserve greater respect for following their convictions. Howard Lyman deserves the highest respect for his Ashoka (famous Indian Emperor who renounced Violence) like transformation to the vegetarian cause from being a cattle rancher.
Vegetarians often get queried about their reason behind being one. As Howard points out, there are three ways to go about explaining it. Moral reason, Self/Health Reason and lastly Ecological/Environmental reason. Howard realising that moral reasoning is the most vulnerable one, not easily defendable, ignores it and goes about brilliantly presenting how meat eating habits in America has led to deterioration in health and devastation of the environment, backing up with first-hand experiences and scientific references.
Personally I feel it is not just the meat-eaters who may have to make hard choices. Meat-Eaters may argue that Rice cultivation is also a major cause of Methane (Global Warming) gas and creates strain on resources in terms of land/water. One can argue that the Chinese and Indian demand for Rice may create severe problems in future. But it is hard to deny the Author's assertion: meat-eating diet and hence cattle ranching's negative effects are multi-fold, in terms of health, spread of pandemics, environmental , depriving land of nutrients and are of much more severe and immediate concern to us.

SuperFoods is a great leap in the right direction for anyone looking to improve his or her diet.
Positives: the format and suggestions are some of the best in the diet class. It's easy to follow, the suggestions are not too expensive, and the book includes a great deal of scientific explanations and references.
Negatives: the author suggests consuming beans, oats, soy, and dairy. These foods are generally beneficial for one's health, however after reading The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Food You Were Designed to Eat by Dr. Cordain, I learned that human bodies are not properly engineered to consume such foods.
Conclusion: this book is a tremendous foundational guide to proper nutrition. For those who want to take it to the next level, I would recommend The Paleo Diet instead.

I've been a vegetarian for 21 years and thought that I followed a balanced diet... well, this book opened my eyes. I loved it because it explains how each of the superfoods contributes to your health, the recipes are very easy to make and since I started putting it in practice, I feel a lot better and more energized :-) Great purchase !

This is an excellent book to help learn more about making beneficial food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle. It is not a fad diet or gimmick to lose weight fast. In addition to the 14 suggested "Super Foods," the author identifies "sidekicks" for each, which offer similar benefits. The author also provides recipes, offering guidance on how to prepare these foods using healthy cooking choices, too. (I've already tried a few and they're fabulous!) Finally, throughout the entire book the author supports his information with research-based evidence, with references, from peer-reviewed journals.
Although the focus is not on losing weight, when you take the advice of the author and begin to eat all of the foods necessary for a long, healthy life, you have little room left to eat the garbage that keeps on the extra pounds!
This is not just a book I recommend to friends and family - this is one I've already purchased several copies of for friends and family!

My doctor recently diagnosed me with diabetes in addition to my longstanding problem of high cholesterol and high triglycerides, which was also affecting my liver. I was quite overweight but didn't really care until that point - there's always tomorrow to lose it, right? He put me on a cholesterol and triglyceride lowering medicine and told me I needed to lose weight. This time I took him seriously, and I also read SuperFoods Rx and SuperFoods Healthstyle. I started exercising (walking) and eating healthy by following these two books' recommendations. So far I've lost 31 pounds without feeling deprived or going on some weird diet. I feel great, my diabetes is well controlled, and my cholesterol, triglycerides and liver function are in terrific shape now. The Super Foods have found a permanent place in my diet, and exercise a permanent place in my lifestyle. Thanks to these two books I believe I've saved my life and will enjoy better health over the long term. I've sent them to my brother to help him make the changes he needs for the same reasons. I highly recommend SuperFoods Rx and SuperFoods Healthstyle!

Just as the majority of others,I give this book 5 stars. I have been using it almost daily for several years. True,I am a holistic practitioner, but I use it personally with and for my family. My husband actually got the book as his course text for a nutrition course in his Acupuncture graduate program. I have used it far more than he.
With beginners,or say, someone new to all of the 'type diagnosing',I usually recommend they look through the back glossary of foods, categorized by types such as legumes, veggies, fruits, etc. Pitchford breaks down the 'energies' of the foods so well, and gives a brief overview of how they are helpful, along with some basic recipes.
He also has sections on oils,sweeteners,greens/chlorophyll,etc.
I just don't see how anyone would be confused or find it contradictory,if you take it a little at a time, and don't attempt to 'diagnose yourself western style'. [this is the trick-it's not a how-to manual;it's a resource guide!]
You can learn the basics of what is important and why, which types of sweeteners to replace with what, etc.
What I love about this book, too,is his focus on assisting those who are transitioning from a more standard western diet. ie,he will discuss meat, fish and their healing properties, when they may be needed, when to avoid, how to transition from, etc.
This is not an 'all or none' preachy type of book.
Pitchford is sincere and obviously knowledgeable/experienced.
For all around great, useful books on health and nutrition,I really cannot think of any other that I'd recommend so highly. Accessible to beginners, but will still challenge/provide info for more experienced folks/practitioners.

I for one grabbed this book because I heard Dr. Nick on "Focus on the family" in an interview and again on another radio interview and held him to be a Christian based diet author with personal experience and a wealth of knowledge about the medical side of getting thin. However, the book came across to me as an attempt to appeal to the masses and sort of put the credit to God on the back burner or off to the side or in the shadows and I can't be as inspired by that as a christian or for that matter, before my salvation. I did learn some great insights from Dr. Nick but I am a believer in the power of God to do everything and that just didn't come accross in this book. So with regret I say this book is a testament to Dr. Nicks' great triumph over the "Idolotry" of food as he said in his interview, but it just didn't get me to go along. I hope he will in the future let his faith be more prominent in his story telling and trust in our Lord for the results more than his publisher. If you would like a good hepful book as a compliment to this one may I suggest,Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

Interesting in how he lost weight. We all do not have the money to do as he did. But it had to be hard for him to hold to what he had started. same as any diet. The change first has to be in your mind and heart before it will become part of your outsides. Believe first see results later.

It is not a diet book. it is not a how to do it book. it is a how i did it and why i did it fast paced, quick fun read.
being fat is sin. it stops you from being that good and faithful servant that the faith requires and God expects. the author leads the way, walks the path, is a real leader for this important insight.

This isn't a typical "diet" book, which I like. I've read enough diet books in my life to understand the basic concepts. Instead, this book chronicles one person's journey, including the heartache associated with being obese as well as the triumphs of losing signficant amounts of weight. It has been surprisingly motivational - I find myself thinking of the story throughout the day when I struggle with something, telling myself that if he did it, I can certainly do it too. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

I loved this book. I believe that I would have liked it even if I were not fighting weight problems. It is entertaining and educational in ways that few books are. Frankly, I generally do not believe that a book can be educational if it is not also entertaining. This is a difficult standard to meet, but Dr. Nick has done it.
Unfortunately, it will be hard to duplicate his method because few of us can take a year or so away from employment--even for life saving therapy.
I see that used copies are selling very cheap here at Amazon making the ultimate combination--education, entertainment, and value. Order several copies of this book to use as gifts.

Weston Price didn't write this book sitting behind a desk or doing research in a library. He also wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel in a laboratory. He went out and spent significant time in the field and saw with his own eyes the effects of the traditional and modern diet within members of the same families. This research was done in the 1920/30's, just when the traditional culture's were in their last thros of survival, if he had waited another 10/20 years he probably wouldn't have been able to make the comparisons. Today people try to make comparisons but at this point almost all the oceans are polluted and nearly all the soils are depleted and most of the water is tainted and most importantly, the western diet has overrun the globe with all it's pseudo science and mass marketing campaigns... you travel to the most remote corner of the globe and there's a native drinking coca-cola and eating wonder bread with powdered milk. lot's of critics say his research is outdated but this is sour grapes. The medical/chemical/pharmaceutical industry cannot make money on preventative medicine in the form of raw high-vitamin butter, cod liver oil, fermented grains, and seaweed. So, it's no wonder that all the Price research got swept under the rug. It's amazing this book is still in print.

This book, although written in the early 20th century contains some of the most important health information ever recorded. Dr. Price was a pioneer in determining the relationship between nutrition and degenerative diseases. It is my opinion that all healthcare practicioners (traditional and alternative) should be required to read this text before graduation. I believe that it is that important to understand the implications of living in an industrialized nation...and of course what can be done about it.

There is nothing to consider here, this book is a must read for anyone and everyone. World peace will come when we heal ourselves and our environment. Nutrition is the key. This book will empower people and take back from those evil, bood sucking scumbag corporations like the pharmaceutical industry ! Dr Weston Price is a true hero and honest researcher, he really did discover the answer to true health, happiness and earth harmony.
I must mention an experiment Weston price did. Perfect pigs were deprived of vitamin A in their feed. The off spring were born with no eyes. These pigs were then fed a healthy diet which included the vitamin A. The next generation of pigs were born perfect. So the bling pigs gave birth to perfect pigs once the nutrition was corrected. This proves that defects are not automatically passed on to your children. We can correct defects in one generation and we can also cause serious defects in just one generation!
Narrow hips in women, no room for wisdom teeth, flat feet, crowded teeth needing bracers, ears that pop out, lowered IQ are all very common but they are actually physical degenerations that are preventable!
There are people out there spreading the word on Dr Price such as Sally Fallon and Dr Mercola and more. This book should be taught earlier on in secondary schools!

The message of Weston A. Price research is really simple: eat natural UNPROCESSED foods. Heart disease and cancer increased dramatically during the 1960s to 1990s because of high consumption of vegetable oils, trans fatty acids, and other processed oils, such as margarine. The French Paradox as to why French ate more saturated fat and had lower incidence in heart attack is deceptively simple: they eat natural fats and unprocessed food. American diets is full of toxic chemicals, aspartame, fructose corn syrup, etc. It has to be understood that sugar is also the other issue of obesity and not just fat consumption. The French are low on that point too, but they also take polyphenols high in wines. Greeks have low incidence in heart disease because they too don't eat fructose, aspartame, trans fatty acid, or even margarine. The basic argument of Weston A. Price is this: avoid man-made products. He's not God yet. If he thinks he is, then he is merely cloning from something.

This was a very good book. It helped my daughter and I better understand what was going on in the NICU and with my grandson and why things are done a certain way. It lets you know the criteria that your baby needs to meet before he or she can come home. It also talked about Kangaroo Care, which the NICU my grandson was in, never metioned until we brought up the subject.
The down side was alot of the book also pretained problems with multiple births,so we could skip alot of pages that didn't pretain to us.
All in All I would recommend this book to preemie parents.

Pros: great information about what to expect, comprehensive data on outcomes and risks, talks about all stages (antepartum, delivery, NICU, early childhood, etc).
Con: 578 pages!!! And every chapter repeated some information from other chapters. The foreward suggests reading only the chapter that relates to you, and warns you against reading the whole book, but what a dumb suggestion - Of course I want to know everything! So I read the whole book, which repeats itself about 30%. For nervous fathers-to-be (and mothers too), reading almost 600 pages to get 200 pages worth of information is not worth it. My wife read the Dr Sears "Preemie" book (much shorter) while I read this one and she liked it. I was worried I wouldn't even get a chance to finish it before the baby came, which just piled on more stress - just know what you are getting in to when you buy this book.
If I had to make a recommendation - FIRST read one of the shorter books, if it doesn't answer what you want to know, THEN buy this monstrosity.

This is an excellent resource - especially if you know that you are going to have a premature baby or if you purchase it while your little one is still in the NICU. It explains all of the possibilities in Q&A format, split up into sections. It will explain in more detail what the doctors may be telling you about your baby.

I thought this book was great! My mom bought this book for me after my son was born at 29 weeks. There is a lot of information that does not pertain to everyone, but it is very easy to skip through to what does pertain to your situation. It is very informative and explained things in detail when the doctors didn't have time to explain everything as thoroughly.

When our baby was born at 25 weeks, and 1 lb. 14 oz., we were overwhelmed. My pregnancy was normal; there were no anticipated complications. Nothing really prepares you for what it's like to have a baby so small, and the roller coaster of events that follows. Luckily, someone gave us this book. We were able to understand the terminology our baby's doctors were using, the surgeries, the prognoses, and the possibilities--even the optimistic outcomes. The book is well-organized, and easy to read for the layperson. It was an essential guide for us. I would highly recommend it for anyone with a preemie who has the questions, fears, and hope that come with having a baby who has special health needs.

I found this book to be a fascinating, but very practical study of nutrition. It was presented in a way that is easily understood. It lays out a plan that the average person can apply to their daily life to change over to a healthy life style. I would say that reading this book was a life-changing event for me----I have also shared this book with my family and loved ones.

I looked into buying some books to discuss the Mediterranean/Crete/Omega diet. I did like this book the best compared to the others I had bought (Mediterranean Prescription, and The Anti-inflammation Diet and Recipe Book). This gave a worded description of how the author ate growing up and gave a concise way to think about what you are eating - think fresh and simple.
Like most "diet" books there are sections on why this works scientifically and some meal plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is helpful but I did skim the first few chapters. There is also a "food pyramid" and many helpful tables as to what you should try to fit into your diet.
I have been following the advice of this book (adapting the meal plans to what is doable long term for my spouse and I) and I can honestly say that I feel good, calm, and not hungry. Plus I love it that drinking a glass of wine with dinner is acceptable!
For people who are looking for a face lift on your diet, I do recommend this book.

I was surprised that this book was copyrighted in 1998. It seems that we have just now caught up with what she knew back then about essential fatty acids. That part of the book is very good and I am glad that we have finally caught up with her on this.
I haven't tried any of her recipes but I it seems that many of the recipes do not follow her traditional Greek way of cooking. I mean canola oil, for instance, certainly is not a part of traditional cooking anywhere. It is a relatively modern phenomena. She also uses white sugar and white flour in some of her recipes. Come on! These things were not part of the traditional Greek diet. And, really, do you think they used low-fat dairy products. Give us a break!

This book is extremely helpful for children with ADHD. It gives practical and fast working advice that is right on the money. It is a great place to start when looking for an alternative to drug therapy. I highly recommend this be the first book you read when you are learning about ADHD - it may be the only one you need. Thank you to Dr. Bob for all your research and clinical expertise that went into writing this book and for all the children you have saved!

Dr. Bob in his book is another one of those writers about ADHD who believes (sincerely) that supplements, food, good parenting, and so on is the correct answer for treatment of all types of ADHD/ADD. While certainly, the above would help almost any type of disorder, he never bothers to mention at ANY time when his idea did not work, (ie the vitamins failed to solve the child's problems)--so am I believe it is 100% successful?!! Amazing. My question for Dr. Bob is if pharmaceuticals do not work, then why can I name so many success stories from people who DO USE them. Oh, by the way, they do not work all the time. He is a convincing, good writer, he is just totally wrong. Also, he forgets that we now are seeing adults in their 40s still having the symptoms of ADD, who by the way had them first diagnosed in the 1-3rd grades. I would recommend his book, because it is well written and organized. And, all children do NOT need to take medications to modify their behavior. I do think our society at time has gone overboard with that notion. But his book is not the cure all with his omega oils and patented products he so often wants you to use. He has some very good ideas, and I took this into account. He says sugar impairs you immune system, which is abosolutely false, and has some other non sense he tries to pass on with questionable science to back it up. To me it appears as another one of those who believes you should avoid ALL medications at ALL costs no matter what. Also, how many cases a day does he "treat" for ADHD, and how does he deal with adults who have had it for so long. Does he, while flexing soft tissue as a chiropractor, take time out to express his feeling while giving a massage? ADHD/ADD is a long complex condition-- that foods and vitamins cannot "fix" so easily as this half life of 18 days he speaks about. It often involves moral and personal issues at home, that by avoiding sugar is just not going to cover. guyairey

My 5 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. So, when I first saw the title of this book I thought it was a joke and I was hestitant about ordering it. But to my surprise it is a great book! The book does a great job of explaining (in plain english) what ADHD is, how to begin to heal the body and how important a sugar/ dairy/ gluten free diet is.
Upon his suggestion, I immediately, but graduately, changed my son's diet and found an hollistic doctor which we are currently working with. I have seen a change in his hyperactivity since removing the sugar and the fast food and he is even doing much better in school.
This book is an easy read, I read it in four days! I recommend this book to all parents!

When I first saw this book I thought... "18 days? Yeah, right." But I thought I didn't have anything to lose but a few dollars so I got it. We had tried all kinds of diets, vitamins, meds. Things would get better but not be entirely "back to normal".
I read through Dr. Bob's book, took notes, implemented some of the thoughts... I read the entry of one of the readers below that talked about the parasites and wondered if perhaps that was it for us too.
We had an appointment and saw a doctor. Parasites it was. Five days on a course of black walnut tincture and my daughter was a new child. She lost her diagnosis of ADHD the next doctor appointment we had. The teachers could not believe the difference. We are still in awe.
Thank you Dr. Bob. Without you and your book, my daughter would still be on Concerta. And the health of our family would never have been improved from your other recommendations.
For this and so much more, Dr. Bob:
THANK YOU !!!
PS We also HIGHLY recommend the daily devotional Dr. Bob has written. I don't have a friend who hasn't bought it after hearing some of the topics discussed in it - turning grey hair back, the hazards of peanut butter, better sleep, back pain solutions, bringing liver enzymes back to normal, migraines, and the list goes on and on with advice we had never ever heard before and my friends and I read A LOT of health books !!!

My 3 year old son had been out of control for a long time. He had many symptoms of ODD. He had a short fuse and got angry easily. He always whined and wouldn't sleep through the night. Both my husband and I were at a breaking point, but knew we did NOT want to go the medication route. I always thought our family ate pretty healthy; we would limited our kids sugar/snack intake and we weren't a milk drinking family so I didn't think that my son's 'attitude' symptoms were food/mineral deficiant related. Boy, were we wrong!
While reading Dr. Bob's book I compared my son's 'symptoms' to those in the book. Dr. Bob's book has been a lifesaver! We noticed a difference in only 5 days!
We started w/ the nigtly salmon oil, added flax, changed to soy and rice milk and we are beginning to add vitamins and whole food minerals. We even started the program for all 3 my children.
This book has added a bright future for our children and has given my husband and I the peace in knowing we are actually getting to the root of the problam instead of just medicating the problem. Thanks Dr. Bob.

This is the third celiac book I have read since diagnosis and the best one so far. The authors do an excellent job of explaining what celiac is who gets it, and why it is difficult to get diagnosed. The information is presented clearly, in well-defined categories, and without resorting to jargon.
Symptoms are described in great detail, with other possible diagnoses given for each. Unlike other books which essentially tried to pin every symptom known to man to gluten, this book offers much more balanced information.
for those already diagnosed, there is much helpful information, including not only foods to avoid but much dispelling of myth about foods which are safe to eat despite common assumptions. The authors also discuss 'survival' strategies for coping with dietary limitations, what to do with celiac children, even the current state of celiac research.
This book is an excellent resource and I ezxpect I will return to it many times.

This book contains all you need to know about celiac disease. Dr. Peter Green's book is a great resource for those who want to learn more about the disease's symptoms, testing, diagnosis, and disease management. It also describes other diseases associated with CD. Although written by a doctor, the book is written in layman's terms. If you suspect you have celiac disease or are gluten intolerant, this is a valuable read.

I have tremendous respect for Peter Green, perhaps one day we could see an expanded version of this book.

Get this book first if you think you might be having a problem with gluten. I haven't read any other book that is better than this one. Easy to read, and gives all the information you are going to need to get diagnosed correctly, as many doctors don't understand how to diagnose celiac or gluten sensitivity. You can take this book with you to the doctor and avoid arguments- Dr. Green is a top doctor in his field at Columbia University Medical Center, so your doctor should give weight to what he says. If you are newly diagnosed, this book will also provide you with a good understanding of the process of the disease and how to manage it.
