As I scrambled to meet the direction of my CEO to get our disaster plan updated in order to deal with the pressing threat of terrorism it was recommended to get this text by a peer. After reading this book, I can say without a doubt, that it is one of finest disaster works I have ever been exposed. It has taken complex issues and presented them in a real world method that makes comprehension and application quite easy. Frankly this is a must have reference for emergency service and management personnel in public and private sectors. Outstanding work!

Outstanding work that takes you through a logical and sequential path concerning the application of Incident Command for EMS/Ambulance/Rescue operations.

Without a doubt the best text on the subject that I am aware of. Great reference and operational manual.

Well written and informative. Good review of incident management system. The information provided regarding disaster medicine is from the EMS response point of view and is useful for Emergency Physicians and Disaster researchers from the point of view of understanding EMS response in disasters. This book should be part of the overall collection of any physician working in area of Disaster Medicine.

that's new edition (39ª) is diferent of the 37ª. in this new edition the anatomy is broached in chapters of topografical anatomy and not sistemic anatomy. Topografical anatomy is most interesting for a medicine.

The 39th edition of Gray's Anatomy covers all aspects of human anatomy as well as integrating a comprehensive amount of additional information including histology, embryology, physiology, and pathology. Put together by renowned scientists and clinicians, this iconic book is a must for any medical student. This book is IT!

i bought a used copy and its such a big book that its spine does take a beating and its worth getting it new and with the dvd and the subscription. if your gonna use all the resources its so worth it, but the book is well laid out and easy to use, the pictures are well done and the text is well easily scanable for fast reading

This is an AMAZING book to say the least. I have to say, that this book is not for someone who is just starting in the medical field, as it is written in complex medical terminology. However, if you are in the medical field, than this book is a great reference. Every section of the body is broken down to the most minute detail. And the illustrations/pictures are absolutely amazing; they make learning anatomy fun and a little easier. I have to give kudos to all the authors and illustrators of this text... well done! It's also good to do exercises with ;)

Totally distinct from earlier editions is the radically different organization of this classical textbook: the human body is no longer described as containing different systems - the skeleton, the vascular system, the nervous system,...- but the body is now divided in regions. The reason for this radical change, chief editor Susan Standring (King's College, London) explains, is that in the real world, practising clinicians in their daily practice use a regional approach, rather than a systemic view. Therefore, it is understood that the new, 39th Edition of Gray's Anatomy is more adapted to the needs of surgeons, radiologists and other clinicians, than to medical students or scientists interested in the area of human anatomy. However, there is some consideration of the editors for a section `systemic overview'. So, the endocrine system, the blood (haematopoietic) and immune system are not entirely overlooked.

In particular, when regarding the master gland of the endocrine system, namely the pituitary, readers should know that this organ may be found in the `region' of the diencephalon (Section 2.1.). So, neuroanatomists may rejoice that they finally regained control over the capital region of the human body, and over all body functions regulated by this region. Unfortunately, unlike the 38th Edition, the editor of this section has decided to relapse into a terminology that was already obsolete 15 years ago. `Chromophobic' cells belong to the dark ages when new imaging techniques were still looming for their curious but ignorant discoverers. Bibliographic references are reduced to a baseline level. This would result in insufficient source material for research purposes, but, on the other hand, the references are concise enough for users that may feel comfortable with a general slowing down of scientific progress.

However, many, many advantages of the newly revised topics may be found in this 39th Edition. For those interested in the anatomy of the pelvic floor, the inner ear, or the organization of the peritoneum, Gray's Anatomy will meet their expectations. Also shortcuts to topics like assisted fertilization, preimplantation embryology are included, although it never has been easy being both at the cutting edge and also a textbook that bridges the generation gaps. Therefore, together with many, I will be looking forward to the 40th Edition.

Virginia Morris nails it with this comprehensive volume. She addresses every issue I've faced as a caregiver and more. Her sensitivity and caring shine through every page, and she's packed the book with useful information.

If you're caring for aging parents, start here. "How to Care for Aging Parents" stands head and shoulders above other general caregiving books.

Taking care of my 90 yr old Grandmother was so difficult. This book gave me so much insight on area's that I had no understanding of. Also helped point me in the right direction to planning at the end.

This book is exceptional. The author includes all specifics needed to apply the valuable information provided throughout the book...including phone numbers and addresses. Not only did the book help my husband and I prepare to care for our own parents, reading it has helped us prepare for our own aging process. The information will make things as easy as possible for our single child when we become the "Aging Parents". This book is a must have. I bought one for each of my siblings and also copies for good friends who are also caring for elderly parents.

Written about nurses by nurses themselves, this book speaks to all of us. In a format blending story telling we know as nurses with the plain, sometimes harsh truth about barriers, 11 nurses described how they worked their way into the nursing profession, or fought to remain after health issues threatened their career. "Leave No Nurse Behind" is a positive outlook on the strength of determination and "Abilities" of nurses representing our profession proudly. Each chapter's 'Workable Wisdom' highlight practical tips flowing from the reading. And lucky Chapter 13 is excellent "Future Planning" encouraging us to look at our own vulnerability (Yes we are all "TABs": Temporarily Able Bodied..never know when we may be the one to be left behind). Time to begin exploring, highlighting, and applying the lessons learned and guidelines to develop similar resources and links in Canada! P.S. I've purchased a copy to donate to my alma mater.

I am an RN with a significant hearing loss and am unable to lift over 20 lbs for the rest of my life. The hospital I worked for for the past 13 years told me they could not accommodate me and I had to go. I felt like a failure as a nurse! I looked at other options, but after being a nurse for 23 years I could not think of anything I would rather be. I went back to school to obtain my BSN, and after reading Donna MaHeady's book Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working With Disabilities, I found new hope and a stronger determination. The life stories in this book are nothing but inspiring and motivating. IT is a well written book and I am so very glad that I have purchased it for my own. The nurses in this book are nothing but phenomenal!! Donna has provided hope and inspiration for all disabled nurses by her wonderful book.

In the world of nursing, we tend to think of YAVIS (young, attractive, verbal, intelligent and successful). That means persons with disabilities are often shut out due to appearances. Dr. Maheady suggests that we are hurting ourselves in the nursing world by discarding what does not appear to be perfect, instead of encorporating what people with disabilities can bring to the bedside.
This is also true for the rest of society. There is a place for everyone, and just as we do not discriminate based on race and religion, we should not discriminate based on disability.

I had the wonderful opportunity to read & review "Leave No Nurse Behind" and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. This book explores the personal life stories of 11 corageous nurses as each "fought" their way to satisfy their life dream of becoming a nurse. Each of the 11 never allowed other people's ideas/beliefs prevent them from achieving their ultimate goal. Each nurse found their own niche in nursing and found a way to significantly contribute to the profession & ultimately to society. I strongly recommend that this book be required reading to all student nurses. In reading the stories of nurses with disabilities other future nurses may begin to understand the challenges experienced by persons with physical & emotional disabilities. In addition to the stories shared, each nurse offers workable words of wisdom to help deal with challenges & inspire sucess.

I was inspired by the nurses in this book who described their struggles to realize their dreams despite their challenges. I especially liked the "workable" sections at the end of each chapter. They took the lessons learned and applied them in a general way for others to adapt to their own situations.

I am still working my way through this book but am very satisfied with the level. It is a great supporting text for reading and understanding a molecular biology text book like Watson's.

Biotechnology: A Comprehensive Curriculum Guide for a One Semester Course at the High School (grades 11-12) or Community College Level

This book was a life saver as I developed a biotechnology curriculum for grades 11-12. Not only is the information readable, it is presented in a "light" and humorous manner which makes high school students more likely to actually read the assignments! I used this as a primary resource and list it in my own Biotechnology Curriculum guide as a must have.

I am a biostatistician in the molecular diagnostic field. I have very little training in molecular biology. This book is a great help for me to get the basics in order to communicate better with my bioloist colleagues. I can not recommend highly enough.

As the title says it,it is a great book. The book is so well written. I fist came across this book online and borrowed the second edition from the library. I am an electrochemist and I thoroughly enjoy and understand this book. If you want to learn about molecular biology, where the science is going etc., this is a good book to start with. If you are into investing and would like to understand a bit about what the nerdy scientists are talking about, this book will armor you with that knowledge.

Having said that, I recently bought the third edition and have to say that I am not satisfied with the quality. For $50, we get a book which looks like one of those eastern pirated copies. There are no margins in the book to make notes. The paper quality is so bad that you can see the back page contents while reading and it is annoying. If I were you, I would save money and buy the second edition instead. The second edition has pretty much the same content. I would return this book if Amazon were to refund the entire money!

This book is advertised as a text for the lay person that can also serve as a textbook for levels ranging from high school to graduate school. Unfortunately, this is a drawback, as the book tries to be all things to all people. The book is written in a conversational style and makes use of numerous cartoon drawings in its explanations. Most of the diagrams are very helpful. However, some drawings are somewhat juvenile and cheesy with faces drawn on enzymes, for example. Extra wide margins contain definitions of words used in the adjacent text as well as occasional jokes and anecdotes. Molecular terms are redefined whenever they are used, so you can skip around in the book with no problem understanding what is being presented.

The introductory chapter compares the molecular biology revolution with the industrial revolution. The next few chapters review bacteria, basic genetics, and the molecular basis of heredity. These are followed by chapters on the basics of DNA replication, transcription, and proteins. All these fundamentals are very well covered, and the diagrams illustrate the points well.

The next few chapters review various techniques including gene transfer in bacteria, with subjects such as transformation and plasmids being well covered. There is also coverage of DNA manipulation including purification, restriction enzymes, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Other chapters concerning methodology cover PCR and DNA sequencing. There is a very good chapter on transgenics that includes micro-injection, knock-outs, and reporter genes. One chapter is devoted specifically to the techniques of molecular biology. This contains a rather brief overview of a wide array of techniques such as bandshift assays, detection systems, FACS, and RFLP that could easily have been expanded. Other chapters focus on the applied side of molecular technology with discussions of topics such as biotechnology products and forensic medicine. The book also brings the subject matter home with very good chapters on inherited diseases as well as cancer and aging, and shows how biology at the molecular level comes into play in each of these matters.

Overall, there is a strong emphasis on DNA at the expense of RNA. Similarly, there is not much information on protein analysis. Even the authors cannot keep up with the speed of the molecular biology revolution, since a number of current popular techniques, such as differential display and quantitative PCR, are only briefly mentioned or are not even included.

Overall, Molecular Biology Made Simple and Fun contains" some useful information, especially with respect to DNA techniques and applications. This book would probably be most applicable as a supplementary textbook for an introductory college class on molecular biology or as a reference guide to look up unfamiliar molecular techniques, such as ones that might be encountered in journal articles. I think it might be too advanced for high school students. I found it a fairly accessible read and very informative, and my background is in engineering and computer science, not biology, other than what I took as a college undergraduate. I highly recommend it.

If you are experiencing panic attacks of significant intensity with or without agoraphobia, this is a great book to consider. Dr. Carbonell's sense of humor is tops and his writing will make you feel at ease. It is, however, a self-guided program that takes extra guts and moderate motivation, which is sometimes hard to muster when you're experiencing severe anxiety. I tried it for a few weeks and it helped me get back on my feet.

I think the way the author deconstructs panic attacks, in a thorough, friendly and humorous way, makes it easy to see just how harmless they really are, regardless of how painful it seems at the time. I am learning to apply the techniques to manage panic attacks, and have already seen results. I have even found relief with anticipatory anxiety (a whole chapter on that). There are also helpful chapters devoted to public speaking and flying.

I also found it helpful that the author had suffered with his own panic issues and relates how he faced those and handled them. I think that goes a long way to lending credence to the work. Some other authors I have read have seemed too insensitive on the issue and have been too clinical, which caused me to drop their techniques.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered with panic attacks. And DO the exercises and answer the questions! It's a workbook, after all.

This is without a doubt the best material for anxiety/panic attack recovery. I found myself laughing(in joy and motivation) at a lot of the questions Dr. Carbonell asks- partly because they relate so well to me and forced me to think of how silly my notions of "danger" and "fear" as it relates to anxiety actually are. The author literally dismantles and tears down anxiety for what it actually is- a trick, nothing more, nothing less. I felt as though my long held stuggle with this apparent giant monster of anxiety/panic had been slapped in the face and stomped on. Ater reading this book, I can't help but to think that anxiety is the hack illness of all illnesses. In other words," why am I panicing over something thats completely harmless?" Great Book.

Great workbook, I wish I would of found it 12 years ago. Great exercises, makes sense. Highly recommend if you suffer from panic disorder.

My teenage son was diagnosed recently with Type 1 Diabetes, it was very scary not knowing anything about Diabetes. This book is easy to understand and it explains everything about Type 1 diabetes. Wonderful help to me.

Great book for the Type 1 patient or the parent/spouse/family member of one.
Gives good suggestions on a variety of topics. Well worth the money.

This disease is so overwelming and this book is so helpful in easy to understand words.
Instead of going into a panic when something happens we now just go to the book and it calms us right down.

I have only received this book recently, so I have not read the whole thing. The author doesn't recommend reading it from cover to cover, but to use it more as a reference. I started reading it at the beginning and am now on page 46. It is so interesting, and easy to read, that I see no reason NOT to read it straight through! Even though a lot of the information is technical, it is written in such a way so as to make it fairly easy to understand. My 13-year-old son has only had Type 1 diabetes for three months now and I am hungry for this kind of information. I want to understand this disease as much as possible, and so far, this book is great!

The third book in the series and you know exactly what to expect. Yes, folks, it is every bit as entertaining as the first two, and that's probably all you need to know. But I'll go ahead and mention that he spends some time in the RAF during World War II, which we knew he would as the second book ended. I'll also mention that he and Helen have a baby, which you probably expected. One of the great joys of his writing is discovery, so I'd hate to screw that up with a spoiler, but these two tidbits are on the back cover anyway. Oh, and halfway through it, I predicted an ending in advance, and I only had to read 1000 pages by this guy before that happened. It's still great, great stuff, and you know you'll love it.

I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].

If you like animals you will enjoy all James Herriot's books. This is one of a series of delightful books. Reading one will make you want to read the next one. I can read them over and over.

I have the complete series of All Creatures Great and Small books now. This was the last one and I loved it as much as I loved the others. He was a fantastic writer and having been born and raised on a farm I can appreciate a lot of what he talks about. I also have his cat and dog stories books and loved them just as much.

I gave this to my son who is the father of a preemie. He said it was so good that he was going to loan it to me to read also. My son is a Ph.D. candidate and has a lot of reading to do, so any additional book has to be really good.

This is a wonderful book. The author not only delves into the lives of twelve families affected, but also about the history of neonatology itself. You find yourself pulling for each of these tiny infants as well as their caretakers.

this book is great! it follows the real life happenings of a nicu in california. it follows the cases of several families, through their ups adn downs, and everything in between. there are babies that recover fine, some that recover with problems, adn some do die. it also talks about things from the doctors and nurses perspectives, and gives some history of neonatology. a great book for preemie parents, non preemie parents (i am not, and just loved this book), doctors, nurses, etc. very good read.

I found this book after seeing it mentioned on Oprah. Wow. What an amazingly touching and fascinating look at the brave new world of having babies. She just has a way of finding the books that are full of heart.

This book was the most impressive book I have ever read! It inspired me to go into Neonatology! I adore this book and recommend it to any one interested in medicine!

Excellent book to help those who have liver disease or family and friends of those with liver disease. The books answers questions
that arise when your personal doctor may not be available. Or that
you may forget to ask during your office visit!

This book is very insightful. It explains a lot about what is going on with several different liver diseases. It answered some questions that general physicians were unaware of about rare diseases.

i bought this book for my mother who has cirrohsis and recently had a ct scan show up with what appears to be a tumor on her liver. There are no heptologists in our area and the dr's around here don't even seem to care. this book gave my mother some concrete advice how to eat and how to
live. Since going on a super reduced salt free diet, my mother is feeling 100% better. She has lost 30 pounds and has really been encouraged. i am extremely grateful this book was written.. Overall it was written in easily understandable terminology.

Since being diagnosed with Hepatitis C, I've read Dr. Palmer's book, & continue to review it as questions come up. It is irreplaceable as a resource book.

I have read several books on liver disease but none of them are as good as this one. I have read the first edition a few years ago and it was very helpful since I have Hepatitis B and cirrhosis. It helped me a lot in understanding the treatment such as liver biopsy, interferon and Lamivudine. It probably helped me in staying alive and healthy since I followed her advice on diet, exercise and taking drugs and supplements. I learned that some herbs, supplements and drugs such as iron, vitamin A and aspirin that I took previouslly could be harmful. I also restricted my salt content and fat in my food. The second edition is even better since it is even more update on the supplements and drugs. The information on Glucosamine is particularly welcome since it helped a lot in my osteoarthritis. I highly recommend this book to anyone with Hepatitis.
