I am scheduled for a Permanent Colostomy in less than one week. Even though I had searched the Internet for helpful information, this book has been a tremendous source of help. It has greatly reduced my apprehension.

The authors are to be commended on they way that they have presented this information. It answers ALL of the questions that I had and more. I highly recommend this book.

This excellent book (half the royalties are donated to the United Ostomy Association) is written by a colostomate and an ET nurse and is characterized by numerous first person experiences and insights. Covering numerous topics from the typical descriptions of, different ostomies and surgeries to traveling with an ostomy, considering work situations, remaining active with exercise, children with ostomies, sex and emotional adjustments, etc., this book is written with a good sense of humor and a very down-to-earth attitude. Filled with lots of good resources, Mullen and McGinn do a great job explaining the role of the ET nurse and the role of the Ostomy Association in education of the ostomate and the public at large. A fabulous book and a must for the reference shelf.

This book was given to me by a friend when I was in the hospital awaiting ostomy surgery. I must've read it 1,000 times...it became a reference guide and a best friend--the only friend I had who'd been through this surgery. Her writing is clear and comes from her own personal experience. It has practical advice on ostomy management as well as advice on getting through the emotional roller-coaster of ostomy surgery. An excellent book for anyone going through, or even considering, ostomy surgery.

This book is one of the few available specifically for people with ostomies. This book guides you from the ostomy surgery to dealing with social situations. I don't have an ostomy, but it gives useful advice and assurance, particularly in helping people know what to expect before and after an ostomy.

This is a great book for learning pathology. I'm a massage therapist and this helped me to learn certain conditions such as fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis for school exams and for the national boards. If you really want to know the kind of questions asked on the National Certification Examination get the following on amazon: "The Ulimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers" (Volume 1), (Volume 2), and (Volume 3). Each volume covers each section of the National Certification Examination so thoroughly and the questions really help you know which areas you are weak or strong in.

A group of instructors at The Institute of Continued Learning, Roosevelt University in Schaumburg, IL were so impressed with Dr. Cohen's book they are giving a summer course based on it.

The doctor dispenses vital information regarding the avoidance of medical errors as he leads the patient through the complex medical exam with the ease of clear writing, giving impressive examples to draw from while focusing on the importance of personal health care awareness.

This excellent book should be a staple in everyone's library. It's an easy read and the information on websites and recommended books at the back are well worth the price alone.

Everyone should take a more active role in monitoring his own personal health. Dr. Cohen walks the lay person through the physical exam and the areas where medical errors are liable to occur. He breaks down the mystery of medical data we are given and don't understand from our doctors. The book is well written and provides much insight into what a lay person may encounter during medical procedures. Highly recommended!

As a physician, I strongly recommend this important book.
Many if not most, patients have habitually accepted the advice of their physicians, their prescriptions and the meds handed out by nurses in hospitals or pharmacists without getting themselves informed about their own treatment. This invaluable book provides all the information and encouragment the public needs to get deeply involved in understanding their own care. The result of being well-informed could well-be life saving if it helps avoid medical errors.

Very nice text covering pediatric surgery. Covers a multitude of topics w/ good explanations and well drawn pictures outlining the key points of the operation. More oriented to the actual surgery, would recommend something like Ashcraft for more in depth discussion of pathophysiology.

This is the new edition of the "classic" textbook of Pediatric Surgery. It is the most comprehensive text available on the subject, a must for all practicing pediatric surgeons and aspiring pediatric surgeons. Perhaps a bit too comprehensive for non-pediatric surgeons looking for a simple reference book to keep on their shelf. Nevertheless, even in its fifth edition, this remains the "bible" of Pediatric Surgery.

The bible of pediatric surgery.

This two-volume textbook is the definitive reference book for pediatric surgery as practiced in the U. S. and Canada. As a pediatric surgeon, I use it frequently to refresh myself on the more complicated or unusual cases that I encounter. In addition, it is a good source of material for preparing educational presentations for other health care professionals. Every pediatric surgeon or resident in a pediatric surgery residency training program should own this book.

That said, this book is perhaps a bit too much for the general surgery resident or medical student in the middle of a busy pediatric surgery rotation. He or she might do better with Principles of Pediatric Surgery, a single-volume textbook covering the essentials of the subject, also published by Mosby. This other book would probably also best serve other nonsurgical pediatric physicians for pediatric surgery reference purposes.

For All Affected Families & Friends--A Worthwhile Reference

Full disclosure: my nephew's "story" is in this book, as told by my brother-in-law. When my sister gave me this book I was moved to tears as I read it, because she wants all of us who know and love her son "Robby" to understand his Asperger's Syndrome, and its treatments.

AS is a perplexing syndrome, and the spectrum of PDDs is confusing and multi-focal. For parents, families and friends, this book is a wonderful starting point. The book lays it out in easy-to-digest chunks, most useful for anyone seeking to understand the PDD continuum and its manifestations in children and young adults.

It is clear, concise and (except for the parents' stories) unemotional. It will help anyone affected by a PDD to understand the background, the symptoms, the diagnosis and possible intervention techniques. I am delighted that Ms. Malone and Dr. Quinn are part of my nephew's diagnostic team, and that they have produced this excellent book. And I'm glad my sister & brother-in-law have shared it with our family. Without communication, there can be no understanding.

Excellent book!!! I read this book in one night! It was so easy to read and understand pervasive developmental disorder. I would recommend this book to those who have a loved one recently diagnosed. The autism spectrum is wide. It gave great detail on both ends of the spectrum. Lots of information. Had a hard time putting this book down. If you need a book about PDD, this is the one to get first.

Superb Drug Reference
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-20
Drake/Drake "Pharmaceutical Word Book" is one of the greatest drug references for medical transcriptionists. This easy-to-use guide is superb for those unfamiliar with which (brand-named) drugs require capitalization and which (generic) do not, the names of most available herbal medications (certainly used by more patients now than in the last few generations), and even lists experimental/investigational medications. Since I do primarily imaging transcription, I find it especially handy for nuclear medicine drugs used in my work, such as 99mTc (33 types of technetium isotopes alone listed here).

Four appendixes complete this nearly 700-page book: one involving sound-alike drugs, another of useful abbreviations and dosages, a third of therapeutic drug levels, and a fourth containing the most widely prescribed drugs.

Handy, concise, and used daily by all with whom I work, I highly recommend this great little book for any medical transcriptionist who transcribes medications.

Great Book.

A good book for medical editors as well

Review Date: 2001-06-26
As a medical editor I am always looking for new references, and I found this book to be very useful. It provides the trade and generic names of drugs as well as the common and Latin names of herbal remedies. It also lists the indications for use, the approving agencies, and dosage information. Its small size and use of shorthand and abbreviations (clearly explained at the outset) make it much easier to use for quick spelling/style/information checking than the large, heavy Physician's Desk Reference (PDR).

I believe most editors will find the information on herbals to be the most useful, however, because as the market for alternative and complementary treatments expands, more and more authors are writing about the use of these remedies. Most reference books are not current enough to keep up with this trend, and thus a great deal of editing time can be wasted on searching for the proper spelling, genus & species name, or indications of a given herbal. This book provides all of this information in a short dictionary-style entry.

Overall, this book is very well organized and comprehensive but small in size and thus makes a great reference to keep by your desk.

This book is more than just interesting quotes. I gained much more insight into the history of the American labor movement. People's words can be very effective in giving later generations a sense of what really happened. This book offers much to think about. I was struck by the contrasts of courage and pain, strength and cynicism that were evoked by the quotations of real people.

This book is a wonderful source of inspirational quotations. Through the words of plain folks and great thinkers, you are continually reminded of the spirit of hope and the advancement of the state of working people. The first chapter, This Working Life, has quotes beginning with the Bible and continuing with voices throughout history and from all over the world. The other 16 chapters are more prominently by Americans and about the labor movement. There is a lot more here than quotations. There are short biographies of labor leaders. Photographs and cartoons illustrate issues like unemployment, global competition, and working conditions. The book is a great reminder of how far the average worker has come in the last 100 years, how the fight for a decent living never ends, and how these issues effect all of us. Union members will find the resource directories helpful in finding many more information sources. Overall, a very well thought out book that's captivating and a good resource.

This book delivers a lot more than a collection of quotations about work and the labor movement. Quotations are divided into 17 chapters that cover work issues in everything from Politics and Union Organizing to professional Sports. There's 19th century drawings, photographs and current cartoons that address the issues covered by the quotations. Visually, the book looks like a labor of love--each page is outlined with quotation graphics, and drawings and photos are handled well. To summarize, this book is a great source for quotations; they're easy to track down through 3 different indexes. But what is surprizing is all the history that's presented through the quotations, citations, author comments, and biographies of labor leaders. It's great fun and a very rewarding book. I savored it a few pages at a time.

An excellent full-spectrum labor quote reference.
