This was required for my psych rotation and initially I almost didn't buy it (many classes have extra texts that you don't really need - I thought this might be one...) However, our professor emphasized that the psych dx in regular nursing care plan books aren't right & don't have all that pertain specifically to psych/mental health and lack correct interventions.

As it turns out, I used this little book significantly more than I used the primary text for the class! It has info on the various psych drugs with indications & things to watch out for, info on appropriate communication styles when dealing with individuals displaying particular behaviours incl. therapeutic communication, descriptions of all the various defense mechanisms etc. It's really worth the $$$.

This is one text I will keep beyond nursing school for easy reference to all things psych.

This book was very helpful...If you have the Mental Health book by Elizabeth Varcarolis 5th edition then this book is good to have. It helps with careplans and it has a lot of the psychiatric meds plus interventions. Example with Lithium; for Bipolar-you want to check serum lithium levels weekly/biweekly during therapy. It gives you interventions and nursing considerations for the drugs. So it does have a lot of information in it. Its small but it is a great book to have for Mental Health.

Great tool for better understand of psychiatric disorders

Did you know that marijuana has plenty of medicinal usages. Most of the people would say no because of this crazy "war on drugs". But this time please don't "just say no" and spend some time to read the "forbidden facts" about hemp. A very well researched and written book on the medicinal usages of hemp.

I truly appreciate the heartfelt anecdotal cases that he presents. He does not say anything that I can disagree with, it is not that kind of a book. His scholarly approch to what cases it has been found useful is helpful to me because I practice in a state where it is legal for medical use, and I knew almost nothing. Robert P. Doughton MD.

I bought the book 6 days ago in Amherst and I'm already finished it as it is brilliantly written as it taught me alot of things I needed to know. It wakes you up to the real facts of marijuana for medicine and as a medical marijuana user,I realized that everything in the book is facts and truth. The doctor who wrote it is pure genius and I hope he follows up with another book as he has made the most positive changes in my life. Thank You Dr.Lester Grinspoon

During a Drugs and Society class at Northeastern University, my professor recommended this book as extra reading. The book ends all myths and disputes in regards to marijuana, and raises some serious questions about America's drug policies. Why would a substance that has been around before the age of men be illegal? It is because the synthetic drug manufactures cannot make any money off of it. What happened in 1937 that caused the U.S to condemn use of marijuana and prohibit it? Read the book, and then truly ask yourself how democratic the U.S really is.

This thin handbook is as indispensible as your neurology tools during residency training. It packs a lot of information in a tiny space and covers many topics. It does not have references or prognostic stats, but it will help you in DDx, basic management issues, or just simply act as a reminder when you can't quite remember details about something. I was pleasantly surprised at how much info is in this book. Highly recommended.

What can I say, its a mini version of The Language of Medicine. It has all the terms and test and abbreviations. I have not had a chance to use it yet, but my professor who has been in the field of translation and interpreting for 16 years now, swears by it. Its even a great book to have if you are a native English speaker but cannot understand the medical mumbo-jumbo your doctor is telling you.

Medical Microbiology would be an excellent reference book for any microbiologist. It contains general information about any bacterium you can imagine as well as overviews of the diseases various bacteria cause. Symptoms, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options are covered in detail. The book also contains wonderfully vivid pictorial accounts of the bacteria and their various modes of pathogenicity. A fascinating, well-organized text of sophisticated microbiology!

I've written reviews for several textbooks, and it is not uncommon for me to rant extensively about high prices and the use of color solely for the purpose of making a book appear flashy. In the case of Mims Medical Microbiology though, I have nothing but good things to say. This is an example of a book that uses quite a bit of color, but does so with good purpose. Moreover the color is not overdone, and it is generally used effectively to draw the reader's attention to important concepts or to make illustrations more clear, or realistic. While the price of the book is not trivial, this is still an excellent bargain when one considers the quality of the content. The text is is clearly written and well organized for learning. I highly recommend it for those looking for excellent introductory materials on medical microbiology.

Wise Choice for Learning Infectious Diseases

Review Date: 2001-06-16
This text book is outstanding in terms of clear pictures and detailed descriptions. It exhibits numerous color photos which help remember the clinical signs and appearances of common infectious diseases. On the other hand, the text excellently outlines and explains the underlying theory and treatments. This book takes a modern approach to teach Microbiology by introducing the contents in a system based mannar. This is very different from the traditional way of teaching the subject in which the materials are delivered species by species. I think this way is more clinically relevant and thus, suits the needs of health care students.

After reading this book I thought that it deserved a special review, this is, not the type of review that usually begins with "a must read for every clinician" but something special as this book deserves. Most of us have had already the necessity of accessing Medline database in our research but most of the times we get hit by the results that a simple search presents. We then start browsing and browsing the results and we get tired of so much information that some times does not correspond to our desires or doesn't focus on the subject we were looking for. Now what? - we ask. The answer is simple as the author says; the focus is not just on simple searching but on effective searching. Medline is a complex and very wide database and knowing some of its basic concepts will help us understanding how simple and effective can our search be made. This is what the author presents in this book, a "rutter" for easy and effective navigation in this complex and wide sea of scientific information. There are no secrets in Medline but there are basic concepts like knowing some of the 19,000 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or just simple understanding how they are organized and how this understanding will help us to get the effective search results for our needs. This is given by the author with many examples of ways to start an effective search in Medline and thus not waste so much of our precious time browsing through the great amount of information that this resource can present. The book is very accessible in the way that the concepts are presented with many examples and a glossary for quick reference on MeSH. In a couple of hours the reader will with no doubt find this book from Brian S. Katcher an excellent guide and a valuable acquisition. I must say that after reading it, I finally understood how much precious time I've wasted in my "not guided" Medline searches. Now things are easier and clear thanks to the time, the knowledge and the effort that the author has put in this book.

I had been using "RNotes," which is by the same company, for some time. It had served as an excelent office companion and has been an invaluable tool for reminders, and as an overview and checklist.

It was a very easy descision to pick up "MedSurg Notes," having already built confidence in this publisher, and I am very glad that I did. As much as RNotes has helped me in the office, MedSurg Notes has helped me on the floor. The 8 tabbed and color coded sections make finding essential information an easy task, especially useful for situations in which a quick overview/ memory jogger is needed.

It has "Anatomy Physiology snapshots" throughout which have been wonderfully useful to me, and the "be prepared to" section at the end of each condition help keep you one step ahead of the game in situations demanding rapid descisions. I skimmed it cover to cover to give an overview of what exactly was contained inside and where to find it, and i find myself using it to brush up now and then during down time.

I can say it deffinately has helped in many situations already. MedSurg Notes is packed with things we all learn but don't use on a daily basis. Being able to rapidly review has kept me confident in my performance. It is also great as a teaching tool and overview for aids and techs, and very informative on what to look for to keep the charge nurse updated, especially since it is so easy to sometime overlook or dismiss the small stuff such as subtle reactions to meds, S/S of dehydration, delayed trauma, etc.

Overall, this book is well written, a time saver, a memory jogger, and a wonderful companion when dealing with pt. or res. care.

It contains valuable information that one needs, and should know about the human brain. The authors did their research and it shows. They combined substance, style, and wit in presenting their information in a manner that makes the material "unforgettable". However, this book is more than a book of games. The chapters which involve the development, styles of learning, and processes of the brain are presented in most understandable an dmeaningful ways.

We both read the entire book and did the exercises which are challenging and really give your brain a workout, and some of them can be done while driving. It seemed to be saying the brain needs exercise regularly to keep it healthy just as the body does, and the book contains numberless exercises. There is something in it for everyone.
