This book lays out everything you need to know in a concise, easy to follow format. If only it wasnt so friggin gigantic. So whether you need to run to the office to brush up on a procedure you havent attempted since your second year of residency or you need something heavy to bash the hell out of a Ganglion cyst (please dont actually do that), this is a great tool.

Great Book for anyone interested in emergency medicine

I am an EMT working toward a degree in nursing or PA. I saw this book being used in the ER at UVA Medical Center and had to have it. It has been a great learning tool for me. I would recomend anyone practicing emergency medicine to add this book to your library.

A must-have book for practicing emergency physicians
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-22
This new edition of a classic text is essential for the busy emergency physician. Not only does it give clear instructions for performing procedures, it also provides relevant information about pathophysiology. Indication and contraindications are explained. Numerous helpful tables assist in the interpretation of test results. This book is much more than a how-to manual, and no emergency department should be without it.

Not only for the ED

Review Date: 2007-02-24
I've purchased every edition of this invaluable resource. I do work in a busy, high-acuity ED, but also consider this if you're a family doc in a rural area where you might be called upon to perform a life saving procedure that you haven't seen since residency. Now if they'd just publish a pocket PC edition.......

Complete but somewhat dated

As an ER PA I find this large text full of many procedures useful in emergency medicine. However, by todays standards the B&W pictures and drawings are very dated. An alternative worth considering; with better pictures and detailed descriptions would be: Emergency Medicine Procedures by Eric Reichman and Robert Simon.

Gunderson and Tepper provides a thorough coverage of Radiation Oncology. Overviews of each topic help place treatment principles in context, and authors clearly develop the rationale for treatment recommendations based on key clinical trials. Important aspects of pathology and radiology are reviewed where necessary.

Clear summaries and suggested treatment algorithms are provided.

Layout is clear and logical with excellent indexing.

Clinical Radiation Oncology is aimed at those seeking a balanced knowledge of Radiation Oncology, but in places falls short of the detail provided by the likes of Perez.

Very readable and highly recommended, Gunderson and Tepper provides a sound knowledge base for those working in the field of radiation oncology.

The book is an excellent source of information regardless of the oncologic field one is in. It gives a good overview of the field of radiation oncology for those not in the field. Its algorithms are an easy read for quick reference. Multimodality treatment is well emphasized in the text

An Important Text
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-02
Clinical Radiation Oncology by Gunderson and Tepper is an important text for practitioners in the field. It is more recent, and therefore more up to date, than the Textbook of Radiation Oncology by Leibel and Phillips. Additionally, this book appears to draw on a wider range of investigators and institutions than the Leibel text.

The new Gunderson has improved considerably from its first edition. It begins each clinical unit with an overview segment. Although this feature can be repetitive, it is also quite helpful to students of the field who find themselves overwhelmed by the amount of information one must assimilate. Although the Gunderson text has some weaknesses, notably a skimpy section of the treatment of benign disease, it covers most important disease sites well.

The new Gunderson is a hefty tome, running almost 2000 pages, and yet it is only a summary text of radiation oncology. To answer more esoteric questions, one must turn to Perez and Brady or a primary literature search. That being said, this book is a welcome addition to the available collection of radiation oncology references and should be read by all trainees.

The amount of knowledge and the scope of this book are the exact need for the first contact with clinical trials. Yet, it is not a simple or superficial text. Instead, it not only will guide the reader through the basics of trials (and there is so much that is not basic in it) but the author points the reader to hundreds of papers and books that are landmarks. I regard this book itself as one of these landmarks!

This book is very unique. Basic statistical concepts are clearly presented but only those concepts that are important in clinical trials. The author presents all the issues with clinical trials including ethical issues with some historical perspective. Principles of randomization and statistical design are clearly presented. It offers discussion of Bayesian techniques and meta-analyses, cross-over designs and group sequential methods (interim analyses). For statisticians doing clinical research like myself, this is a valuable reference source.

35 years after reading this the first time, I found myself wanting to read all about Sue and her friends again. I have spent the last 32 years in nursing, and am still going strong in school as well as actual practice. The stories are fun, heartwarming and an excellent opportunity to re-visit the wonder of being new to the art of nursing. Great reading for a young person who thinks she (or he) might want to pursue a career in the hands and heart profession of Nursing.

I loved these books as a child, and 40 years later (30 of them, nursing) I still love them. The books are a fascinating time capsule of nursing in the 1930's through '50's. The surface of nursing has changed immensely, but the spirit of it is shown vividly in these stories: respectful, non-pitying caring for people in their crunch times. And on a third level, they're fine stories of growing up, in any age.

This is the first book in the series. It starts with Sue joining forces with her soon to be best friends Kit and Connie on a wonderful and some times frightening adventure in nursing school. This is the way nursing should be taught ......with the students living in the hospital having classes in the morning and working with patients part of day.
This book gives a delightful view of a bygone era. I highly reccomend this series for all ages.
An interesting bit of trivia......Helen Boylston was living with Laura Ingalls Wilder while writing some of the Sue Barton books. Helen and Rose Wilder were friends.

Great story with exciting climax

Review Date: 2003-09-22
This is the first of the "Sue Barton" series. In this story, Sue enters nursing school. She meets two girls, Kit and Connie, who become her best friends. And during their first year there, Sue learns the techniques of nursing as she is gradually moved from one department to another in the course of her studies.

One running concern the student nurses have, is whether they will have the courage to risk their lives in a life-or-death emergency. Sue is especially doubtful about this. Then, one night she herself is rushed into surgery for an emergency appendectomy. Then, while recovering on the ward, she suddenly comes up against a delirious patient who is trying to escape from the hospital. Can Sue stop her --even if the situation puts Sue herself into danger?

This is a wonderful story. Having been first published in 1936, some of the dialogue is a little dated, but otherwise, the story moves quickly and builds to an exciting and logical climax. Highly recommended.

Sue B beats Cherry Ames hands down. Both are nursing series and I like them both but Sue Barton series includes character and plot development that the Ames books just don't have though they are amusing. Sue Barton is fully fleshed out character that you want to succeed.
This book is about her probationary year in which she has several exciting adventures that firmly awaken her to why she wants to be a nurse.

The most hard to locate reference book at our institute despite the fact that there are a number of copies available to our staff. The integrative approach used in this book lends additional insight into the topic of interest. For students the two volumes promote critical thought towards the subject rather than the simple digestion of information. Finally, the book is far less dogmatic in the knowledge it conveys than any other Physiology text book on the market!

Each time you must think through a situation or analyze the facts presented, you are stengthening what you know. And, how can you go wrong with ANYTHING that Linda Smith writes! She is among the nation's most experienced lactation consultants, whose daily work involves handling lactation questions and concerns from around the globe. She has never responded to any of my questions with anything less than excellence!

Comprehensive Lactation Consultant Exam Review with CD-ROM

Review Date: 2001-08-10
This book is an excellent preparation and a "must have" for the IBCLC Exam. If you have not taken a board exam in a long time, this book gets you into "exam mode". Sometimes, taking a test of this nature requires good exam skills. This book gives you plenty of much needed practice. The first part of the book delves into the different sections on the exam blueprint. It lists topics to learn and resources to read. The second part is three 200 questions tests. Eighty some questions in each test are based on pictures from the CD-ROM. The answers generally give the reasons for the right and wrong answer, list the difficulty of the question, and state from what section of the exam blueprint it pertains to. Having practiced with these tests, I felt very confident going into the Exam. It also is a great review for LCs who are retaking the certification exam. I heard comments from several LCs who stated the first exam they took they did not do as well as they thought because oftentimes taking exams is all about practice. They performed much better on the subsequent exams when they studied their mistakes. This is a "must have" for everyone planning to sit for the board exam.

I have been a practicing dentist for 29 years and restoring implants since 1991. I am in the process of becoming board certified to now place my own fixtures. Misch does a fantastic job of bringing into view a number of treatment modalities and what the potential pitfalls can be if each particular step is not followed. Much better than the text book that the school is using. Anyone that is considering restoring and or placing fixtures and intends to get predictable esthetic and functional results needs to read this book.

If you're in the military, work for an NGO, or are about to do a medical school rotation in a developing country, this is a great resource to throw into your bags. I bought this book without knowing there was a more recent edition (and paid a lot more than some of the current used prices). The newest edition has pictures and has some of the most up to date information on leishmaniasis and malaria, but for a few bucks you can get a used edition of this and still have more than 95% of the information remain relevant and useful.

This is one of the most useful books I have seen. Each chapter of this book summarizes each infectious disease briefly, and comprehensively, including its ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. The main focus is on public health response to the event of one case, for uncommon diseases, or the event of a cluster of cases for those more common infections. It is particularly useful for people working in the public health field such as health departments or researchers. However, it is also very handy for clinicians that want to know how to react in front of diseases that may not be common anymore. Specially useful is the chapter on surveillance and reporting. If you want to have one good and simple consulting book on infectious diseases, "Control of Communicable Diseases Manual" is the book you should own.

Although there are many complaints about this book because it is in outline form, it is the best oncology nursing book FILLED with great, very useful information. I bought the book to get me through my first year as a brand new nurse and to assist met in studying to become certified as an oncology nurse. The way the sections are broken down is very helpful. You are able to review one specific section at a time. Outlines, such as this allow the reader to focus on the most important FACTS in a very organized manner.
I am a brand new RN on an adult transplant/oncology floor. Many nurses before me have used this particular book and it came highly recommended to me. After only reading through the first chapter, I understand why this book was so highly recommended.
I GIVE IT a 10/10 and also HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

This book helped me so much on being able to pass that test. It is set up exactly like the OCN Test Blueprint. I would study and work my way through each chapter and then test myself in the study guide book, and then I would test myself on one of the OCN Exam booklets, and then I would go through the book again.

Truly this is your bible for passing the National Oncology Certification Test. This and the Q and A study guide and some practice tests directly from ONS were all I used to take the test this fall. All of us at my work place who used these same materials passed. You really don't need anything else. The only problem is the book is presented in an outline form which makes for difficult reading for pleasure's sake alone but good for studying. Also a good reference book.
