My wife developed chronic urticaria, nothing helped, the doctors could not do much. We would stay up all night itching. It got so bad, it was making us miserable. At my wits end, I was combing over all the journal articles I could find, reading every book I could get my hands on. I was slowly starting to make sense of what was going on, and our doctors could not. I finally ordered this book thinking it might have something about CU. It was a little pricey for a graduate student. When I got the book, I was just so amazed at how great it was. A large number of color picture, and it covered chronic urticaria, very thoroughly. It took 3 months of reading journals review articles and other books. Had I had this set, I would of been done in 30 minutes. It has everything you could think of involving the skin you could think of. This book is worth, four times what it costs.I would recommend it for educated people, but not just doctors, and sciencetists.

This is the ideal book for the practising specialist. Since the whole book is available online, it is not necessary to carry it around. Also the online version is regularly updated. It has more pictures and information than Rook or Fitzpatrick or Lever combined. At the same time the presentation is very lucid and interesting. In my opinion it is the best and most comprehensive book for the Specialist. I am happy that I bought this book.

This book was given to me by my oncologist when I was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, however, I didn't really get into it until the cancer metatisized in 2007. I wish I had read it before...it is informative and inspirational without being "preachy". You can read the sections as you wish and take with you what you want. I'm still in treatment but I read something from it almost every day...my favorite is "This Too Shall Pass".

Realistic & Practical Cancer Battle Plan

Review Date: 2006-08-07
This book is very helpful in navigating the minefield of cancer. I wish I had seen it earlier. The advice and insight
of a knowledgable physician in the same predicament was clear,
relevant, sensitive, and practical. The dominant format is question and answer so you can quickly access and address personal concerns first. It is also extremely helpful in knowing what to ask the oncologists and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment process. I would highly recommend this book to any new cancer patient, but it is also very appropriate for cancer survivors and care givers.

This book is excellent! It is for anyone who has just received a cancer diagnosis, as well as for those around them who care.
It covers everything that you need to understand during those first few months, and it does so in an easy to understand, straight forward manner. It is written with wisdom, experience, and kindness. This book helped me immensely when my Mother was
diagnosed with cancer in March 2001 - having no prior experience or knowledge of what cancer was about. This is the book to get to arm you with enough information that you can help yourself.

I have bought this book over and over and given it to friends and relatives of newly diagnosed patients in addition to patients. Dr. Harpham has a way of writing that makes even medical information easy to get through. Her advice is accurate and helpful. A must for everyone whose life has recently been touched by newly diagnosed cancer.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, many friends confided that they felt helpless and didn't know how to help. Well, here's something you CAN do for a friend who's just learned that he or she has cancer: Buy this book! It's got the most important, practical information that a new cancer patient needs first. Also, it's hopeful and encouraging yet absolutely reliable, medically speaking -- a rare combination among "popular" cancer literature.

The best thing about this dictionary, apart from its clear definitions, is the wealth of drawings - not only of anatomical parts but also of many physiological and biochemical processes. I love browsing through the dictionary and looking at the drawings - more terms stay in mind when you see their pictorial representations.

The practice of medicine is a serious affair. Dr. Bennett's new book is a lighthearted counterweight to our daily effort, allowing us to chuckle at ourselves, our colleagues, our profession and all of those who interact with it. The book is also a good source for that fitting joke or quip you might need for a lecture, a toast, or a presentation. Open up any page for a few moments of zany entertainment. It makes a perfect gift for yourself, a friend or as a "thank you" to a colleague.

There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.

Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.

Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.

This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. It's loaded with anecdotes, definitions, jokes and quotations about doctors and medicine. Almost no medically related subject is left out. Even in you think you don't have time to read (who does?) find some time for this relaxing and enjoyable book. Howard Fischer, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Humor and laughter in medicine are needed now more than ever before because of the increasing stresses of modern medical practice. This gem of a book compiled by Dr. Bennett, himself a noted humorist, includes a great variety of quips, quotes, and jokes that can serve as a lifeline to sanity for stressed-out physicians whether in practice or still in their training years. Much of the material in this book is both funny and original and can be used to liven up ward rounds, medical lectures, and yes, even the sacred physician-patient relationship. It should be relished but should also be shared. Lugwig A. Lettau, Charleston, SC.

As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!

Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Best of all, buy the book for your medical friends or anyone who enjoys funny and insightful lines about doctors, medicine, and health.

We just returned from a Hurricane Mitch Medical Relief Team in Honduras. This book was invaluable to the entire team. Comprehensive enough to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments not often encountered in the US, and basic enough to share the info with the patients to aid with education. What else can I say about this book? I hope they update it sometime soon because there is a lot more that needs to be added but if you only have ONE reference book for medical transcription -- this is the one! Because it is completely alphabetized, no categories, no sections, it is the easiest way to find medical terms. It is essential for beginners and advanced transcribers alike.

I even love the weight of this book in my hand. I love everything about it. You will not regret buying this book.

It's easy to see why this book is a favorite among medical transcriptionists. I would also recommend Dorland's Medical Speller for writers---any kind of writer from fiction to technical---editors, reporters, and even advanced Scrabble players.

When I'm uncertain about how to spell a medical term, it's convenient to zip to the word right away without lugging the big Dorland's down from the bookcase. And if you happen to be either a closet etiology or etymology sleuth, this small text can help you maintain a low profile.

Dorland's Medical Speller is a must for every medical transcriptionist. Even though this book is in dire need of new publication because so much has been added in the last 9-10 years, it is in constant use in our hospital medical records dept. It has become so worn from use that we have had to punch holes in each page and place them in a 3-ring binder, BUT it keeps on keeping on !!

I have been a medical transcriptionist for going on five years and I have used this book more than any other reference book I have. It has more "word power" in a single volume than any other I have come across and is well worth the price!! I started working in a hospital as a transcriptionist and then branched out in other areas of medicine when I went to work for a national company and this book has been a very big help in that transition when doing unfamiliar work types. If you are in the medical transcription field, you will never outgrow this wonderful reference book!!

I'm a second year emergency med resident, and I love this book. It's written for and aimed at emergency physicians. There are a lot of black and white photos of x-rays, CTs, and some ultrasound. There are also many hand-drawn illustrations that highlight what the radiograph photos are showing. Because this book is written by EM docs, there is a focus on clinical treatment. The text really focuses on what's important in interpreting and managing pts with these radiographic findings. There are a lot of photos, illustrations, and easy-to-read useful tables. I only wish that there were more ultrasound photos, but despite that criticism, I can confidently recommend this book to any serious EM resident.

Diane Sandell and Lois Hudson's book "Ending Elder Abuse," is an excellent guide for those who are initially dealing with the care of an elderly loved one. At the same time, there is much that can be learned from the book by those of us who have been in the position to provide care for an elderly loved one.

We can no longer deny that elder abuse occurs and probably more often than we know. The book is a beautiful tribute to a much-loved mother who sadly experienced first-hand this abuse. The authors beautifully illustrate that each of us can make a difference. They give us hope that elder abuse can be stopped.

I found this book to be an invaluable resource for everyone who is, has been or will be faced with caring for a loved one. And that's just about all of us. The authors take the helplessness and fear out of a difficult, heartwrenching task and lead us through it sanely and compassionately. I had no idea how huge was the problem of "elder abuse". Not only was this book's information well written but Bessie's story, which read like a novel, touched me deeply. I could see the frustration, the scenes were alive and when she died, I cried and cried. As one who has had a grandmother in such a home and who is now taking care of my invalid husband in my home, I found the part about caregivers particularly helpful. I applaud the authors and suggest this book to everyone. In fact, it should be in every doctor's office in the country. THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL BOOK.

At the age of 91, Diane Sandell's mother died after having been severely beaten in a California nursing home. This horrific event compelled Diane to found Network Outreach--Better Living for the Elderly (NOBLE). Collaborating with Lois Hudson, Sandell then wrote Ending Elder Abuse: A Family Guide, an important work that directly confronts the inexcusably pervasive maltreatment of our elder generation at home or in sheltered care. This critically important and immensely helpful volume provides the reader with a practical, creative approach to caring for their aging parents as well as offering solutions to professional caregivers and a realistic strategy for legislators and political activists seeking to eliminate this distressing problem that will increasingly affect us all as our population ages and medical advances extend our life spans. Critically important, highly recommended reading for anyone with a loved one in assisted living or nursing home care.

Having friends who struggle as members of the sandwich generation, that large percentage of the American population dealing with both adult children living at home and elderly parents, I highly recommend this book. The story line tugs on the emotions; the language is for the lay person; the suggestions and guidelines are for anyone who finds themselves dealing with the elderly.

Particularly useful are the suggestions on how to handle the frustrations. Just to know that,"Wow, I'm not the only one that feels that way," gives hope and comfort in an otherwise seemingly hopeless situation.

These authors, speaking from their combined voices of more than 30 years of experience with their own elderly, sometimes helpless parents, bring credibility and hope to the pages.

This is a must read for anyone whose parent is losing his or her independence. Who to talk to? What to do? Where to go for help? When to act? Why is this happening? How to deal with the emotions? These and many more questions are answered and issues addressed.

Invaluable, Substantial Contribution
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-26
No reader can finish this book without having a profound awareness of the reality and prevalence of elder abuse as well as what can be done about it.

The appendices are perhaps the most important part. They obviously result from in-depth and shocking personal and shared experiences.

The very detailed guides to choosing and monitoring a care facility are invaluable. Although most references to government and voluntary resources are from California, they provide clues on what to look for in the readers' state and local community.

ENDING ELDER ABUSE is a very substantial contribution to the literature in this often avoided or ignored problem.

Look no further this is the most excellent book for the equine practioner. It is the perfect size, so complete, and the information is easy to access. I don't leave home without it, you shouldn't either.

This large book contains nearly all the information that equine clinicians will require in their daily work. It provides in one volume an excellent reference source. I have no doubt that it will be a popular book to keep in the clinic, car or at home. It will also be a valuable source of information to veterinary students, nurses and anyone keen to have a comprehensive and detailed manual covering such a wide variety of subjects.
The lack of pictures is more than compensated by a clear and easily read text which has been produced by an impressive list of contributors, all of whom are acknowledged experts in their field. It has then been compiled and edited to a high standard by Dr Andrew Higgins and Professor Jack Snyder.

The Equine Manual is one of the most comprehensive, practical resources to date - covering just about everything an equine practitioner might encounter in daily practice from infectious diseases to nutrition to the pre-purchase examination. It is an excellent quick reference resource while at the same time provides much more in depth information than similar type manuals of past. It is well organized and user friendly with excellent quick reference guides and differential tables. We agree with the other reviewers that the manual is a wonderful resource for veterinarians, veterinary students, and technicians alike. A must have for the clinic or the truck.

This equine manual is the most comprehensive and up to date book of equine medicine. This book is easy to use and practical. The information is concise and to the point, it makes an equine practioner's job alot easier. It at the same time is very thorough, complete, and not only does it work for the equine practioner, but also students, technicians, and horse owners.
