This is definately the best small animal surgery book on the market. I have used it as a new grad and even now as a more "experienced" practicioner. Very good for soft tissue and orthopedic topics, with concise but thorough explanations of how/which surgical option is best for each type of condition (fracture type, etc) I'm buying a set as a gift for a new grad!

One of the best Therapy Dog books I have read! Kris Butler shares her wealth of experiences so we all can contribute, learn, and benefit from her knowledge.

The book covers everything from the dogs, patients, health care professionals to the organizations we work with. It also covers therapy certification organizations.

Being a small therapy dog owner and reading about their special needs and outlook of the world, really acknowledged their "special gifts and our obligation" to them as therapy dogs.

I would recommend this book to anyone considering therapy dog work or an experienced therapy dog team.

A must read for active therapy teams

I can not thank Kris Butler enough for writing this book. I have been a very active dog therapy visiter this last year and visits were going very well until I started visiting a behavior health unit at a local hospital. My boxer dog became very stressed and I was very concerned. After reading Therapy Dogs Today, I became very proactive in how I did my visits to these BH units from what I had learned from this book. The very first visit after reading this book, I could not be happier about how my dog responded to the visit. Once I understood how stressful this environment was for my dog and what were the stressors, I was than able to work on reducing these stressors. Both my dog and I thank you Kris!

A great practical guide for therapy dogs

Kris has provided us with great new insight and tips into our work with therapy dogs. The examples are wonderful - and in my mind one of the best parts is on her discussion of social proximity and how important it is to understand this in ALL of our visits. A job well done!!! A must read

Too many folks think they'll just go on state aid and let society take care of them. I agree with author Shoff that this industry is headed the same place as our Emergency Rooms in urban hospitals. And she explains the steps we can take to secure our senior years. If you are anywhere close to 50, read this book. If you're over 50, have them send it FedEx!

Mrs. Shoff has written a clear, convincing, heart-felt, elegantly organized treatise on how to age responsibly. It has rearranged and brightened up a very confused and bleak picture of what it means to age, derived from countless visits to nursing homes over the years. Instead of a sense of victimhood, I have caught a (liberating) glimpse of what it might mean - for me and my dear friends - to have a hand in determining our own destinies!

Where will you spend your old age? Will you live in a nursing home? Will they take you for walks when you want to go out? Will they help you reposition yourself in bed every couple of hours to help you avoid getting bedsores? Will they be able to get to you on time when you need assistance using the facilities? Will you miss you home?

What if you could stay in the comfort of your own home, with round the clock care if need be, with your choice of caregivers? What if this option was not only for the fabulously wealthy, but was in fact available to anyone and everyone at a fraction of the price of a nursing home? It is not as farfetched as it seems. It just takes some careful planning.

Our society has acknowledged that surviving old age takes preparation. Retirement funds, social security, and well-stocked shelves of volumes upon volumes of do-it-yourself guides are evidence of these sentiments. It is a wonder that amidst all the excitement, most people fail to prepare for illness and incapacitation.

But Karen Shoff of Santa Monica California has vowed to make this ignorance a thing of the past. In her compelling and essential new book, There's No Place Like A Nursing Home, she details in a surprisingly fascinating manner the problems inherent in institutional life, and offers a step-by-step solution. The fast paced text is only enhance by the stories she masterfully tells. As a former Social Worker and Gerontologist, she was witness to the horrors of institutional life. Her experiences in institutional life fueled her passionate commitment to protecting her family, friends and clients from those very facilities.

Her goal is to help ensure each and every American a life of dignity, security, and comfort. She details steps that if taken, will free one from worry, and doubt. She tells her reader how he can stay in the comfort and dignity of his own home, while at the same time receiving care far superior to that offered in any institution for significantly less. Her solution is a combination of Long Term Care Insurance, careful planning, and a slew of incisive, original suggestions. As one of the foremost experts in her field, her book is invaluable. Our society owes Karen Shoff a debt of gratitude for opening up her vast expertise and experience for our benefit.

Don't wait any longer. There's No Place Like A Nursing Home will change your life.

Karen Shoff produced a guide that did not exist before. This should be required reading as a part of everyman's life education: like how to swim, how to be a decent parent, how to do CPR and how to prepare for end of life infirmity. Let's face it: Modern medicine, safer cars, non-smoking and weight watchers are all conspiring to help us live longer. Great! So when we all succeed, then what? Read this book. It answers the question.

Those Aching Feet: Your Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Foot Problems

Those Aching Feet: Your Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Foot Problems is a simple guide for lay people concerning how to prevent, identify, and take care of ailments ranging from ingrown nails to warts, callouses, bunions, flat feet, and even diabetes-related difficulties. An especial section is devoted to foot problems common to athletes, such as shin splints, ankle sprains, and achilles tendonitis. Those Aching Feet does not go into great depth upon the maladies it covers; it's simply a no-nonsense guideline to the basic facts any active person needs to know, and a superb primer to brush up on good podiatric habits before visiting a health care professional. Especially recommended for athletes and those who spend most of their day on their feet.

I have a ganglia cyst on both feet, as well as other feet problems. "Those Aching Feet" described the ganglia cyst problem very clearly. AFter reading about it, I was relieved to discover that an easy solution was available. I visited my doctor and had the fluid drained.

It's a (surprisingly) easy read that seems to cover everything foot related. I give it a very high rank compared to other medical books I have read.

I strongly recommend "Those Aching Feet"

Are you tired at the end of your day? Do you have to cram your feet in to "fashionable" shoes for work? Do you have to stand for long hours, or chase your child all day? According to Christine Dobrowolski, DPM, "If you can keep your feet from hurting, you'll find that you have more energy and possibly less knee an back pain. How the foot hits the ground effects: the ankles, knees, hips and back." (page 126 "Those Aching Feet") I know that I could certainly use more energy and less pain, how about you?

"Those Aching Feet," is a frank, easy to read look at common foot problems; their diagnosis, and treatment. Most of the chapters are aimed at: the average person, the elderly, and diabetics; however, Dobrowolksi has also included a special section just for athletes of all types-- even weekend warriors. The writing is clear and concise; complete with no non-sense language instead of packed with medical terms that most people can't pronounce. Diagrams with large writing are included to illustrate more clearly what ailments look like, which will aid in the process of self diagnosis in many cases. Dobrowolski also outlines situations that will require you to go directly to your doctor, and she offers readers questions to ask so that once you arrive at your physicians, you will be able to act as an informed patient.

Like most people, feet are not something I want to think about for extended periods of time. In spite of my prejudices, I found "Those Aching Feet" to be a particularly engaging and pertinent read. I strongly recommend "Those Aching Feet," to the audience at large, even if you only keep it as a reference book. Eventually, the information contained within this book's pages will come in handy!

This is an excellent manual on the education and care surrounding the feet. I am a diabetic and have problems that were covered knowledgeably in this text. The scope of this book is comprehensive and the information is applicable in a wide range of foot concerns. The thing I liked most is that the average person can read and appreciate the material without having to have an extensive background in podiatry. It is very user friendly while still presenting a depth of information. Highly recommended!

I am fairly athletic and through the years I have had many feet and leg problems, mostly associated with sports and running. My latest issue has been plantar fasciitis, aka heel pain. I checked out a few other books as well as talking to my regular doctor, but I was still having the pain. From the TOC in the "Search inside this book" feature on Amazon.com, I noticed that there was an entire chapter dedicated to Plantar Fasciitis, as well as an extra section in the athletes chapter. (heel pain and plantar fasciitis was reference many times in the glossary too) So I went ahead and ordered the book.

I really didn't expect much, since I already had other advice. I read the thorough descriptions of the heel pain issues and solution, and began taking care of my feet as suggested. They are already feeling much better while walking around and doing light jogging. So far, so good. It seems that I am on the road to recovery.

In addition to the heel pain section, I browsed through the rest of the book. There is a lot of information about many common feet issues in this book. I am glad I purchased it, as it will be a very useful reference for any of my future foot problems.

I can, without reservation, recommend this book to anyone with feet.

Melody Beattie is at her best in "The Grief Club." She used losing her son as a basis for writing this book. The stories are all very unique within themselves and offer much to the reader. As a person who is going through the grieving process right now, I didn't find this book difficult to read through. I found it comforting, though one doesn't have to be grieving to enjoy or get something out of this book. I would recommend this book to anyone and there is always something to be said about someone who uses their own trials as a means to help others.

Subtitled: The Secret to Getting Through All Kinds of Change

The New York Times best-selling author of Co-Dependent No More has lived through many crises: becoming sober, living with an alcoholic, losing her son to an accident, getting Hepatitis C, having chronic back problems--and many other losses. So she isn't writing this from a "professional or clinical viewpoint."

"Welcome to the club," someone might say to you (or at least think it) when you have something happen to you they have already experienced. You may see your life in the chapters on death, Alzheimer's, suicide, divorce, job loss, childhood grief, alcoholism, empty nest, and much more.

"Did I do something to tick God off--so that I got to join one of those clubs," we might wonder. Beattie says, whether we believe it or not, life hasn't signaled us out for tragedy, and depersonalizing a loss helps us detach and lessen the pain.

You won't catch trauma from a person grieving or in pain--and much of her book is about seeking and offering help to those who are hurting--one-on-one or as part of a support group.

The other day a woman told me her mother died seven week ago and now her friends are ready for her to be back to her old self. Obviously they are not a member of that club yet--or they'd be more understanding. Relative to grief, Bettie said, you either pay now or you pay later, and she said, "Once I cried for eight years."

She explains radical faith (vs. simple faith: If I am good, only good thing will happen to me). Radical faith means you can be good and still bad things will happen to you--and it's nobody's fault.

Every chapter ended with statistics, such as 2.5 million Americans die every year, and of that, 45-50,000 are under 25.

Well worth your read because everyone will join some kind of "loss" club--whether you want to or not.

Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommend to anyone going through grief, pain or loss--and those who want to understand better.

I was walking through my local bookstore when my eyes caught sight of this book. The title drew me in, as I am grieving the death of my brother. I saw the author and thought, "Oh, no - not that Codependency woman..."

Melody Beattie - who was the first author I ever knew to use the term "Co-Dependent" a term that had come for many to mean "whiney person who thinks of himself/herself as a victim of everyone and everything."

I decided I would give it a "cup of coffee" dry run, to see if my assessment was correct... or not. I am pleased to announce that my assessment was exceptionally far off and this book is a resource that belongs on bookshelves across the country, since Grief is something we will all touch and the majority of us are less than well equipped to manage.

I remembered as I opened the book I had wondered where Beattie went, as I remember the early 90's and the plethora of Codependency titles I saw springing up and then... I couldn't really remember hearing of her since then. It only took a moment to see why.

Her son had died at age 12. How had I not known this, I wondered?

She wrote about this major loss with candor and frankness, without glossy coating. This is the way she tackles all the losses she discusses in the book - both her own losses and the losses of other subjects in the book.

In the back of the book there is a Master list of losses which is very helpful as an initial assessment and an ongoing tool as you read (actually, work through) the book. Each chapter includes activities to further integrate the material presented.

This is a book I will revisit right away, and then I will most likely revisit it. And I will recommend it to people regularly.

It's a club none of use would choose to belong to, yet with this book as a guide, it will feel that much more "normal."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it enlightened me to the fact that our lives are full of grief, we just might not see it that way. The chapter I most related with was the one entitled "Remembering Changes: Facing Alzheimer's Disease." My father died from complications of this disease almost 11 years ago, and I could really relate to all that was written in this chapter. It is always good to read or hear about someone else's journey through this dark tunnel where there are so many unknowns.

Another chapter that moved me was entitled "Time Changes: Empty Nest and Other Rites of Passage." While we are not yet there completely, in less than two years the last of our four sons will leave our happy, little nest, and even now I grieve about that passage.

Throughout the book, Beattie is solid in bringing out the best of all grief situations in our lives. Her writing shows that even through the worst situations, there is hope in everything, if you choose to find it. In almost every chapter we read about a seemingly lost and hopeless circumstance, but by the end of the chapter, we feel that the voyage you are on does not have to consume you, it can make you better and stronger.

I particularly enjoyed the statistics at the end of each chapter. All are enlightening, and added support to the reading of this book.

I would recommend "The Grief Club" to any person that I know, especially those who are struggling with a grief issue in their life. It is an uplifting, sometimes heart-wrenching expression of what life really brings--hardships and joys. The majority of life is filled with joy for most of us. We find while reading, that some have dark clouds and are not so fortunate. More importantly, we find between the cover of this book, that at times the only thing you have to grab onto is hope. Look for it--it is there!

It's a wonderful book. Its power is in the innocence and simplicity of the quotes. It moves you from complete unawareness of the disease, up through recognition and understanding.

I bought it for my husband, whose mother is in the middle stages of Alzheimers. He read it, or should I say, devoured it, immediately. Then he bought one for his sister (he didn't want to give away his copy).

It's a text book on the progression of Alzheimers, written by people who were there, and woven into a beautiful story. It brings about a sense of peace after reading it.

My name is Doreen. I am one of the people in Betsy Peterson's book. She mailed me a signed copy which I have lent to other people and they also found it very useful. I am writing this to let people know that even though the book is called Voices of Alzheimers, it is really a book about Dementia in general (my diagnosis is Pick's Disease, not Alzheimers and as the book indicates they later changed Betsy Peterson's husband's diagnosis from Alzheimer's to another dementia). So if you have a family member who has a dementia other than Alzheimers, you can also find helpful (and hopeful) information in this book.

This small book is a treasure of honest and deep sharing on the part of dementia patients and their caregivers and loved ones. The book is visually very attractive, the content is well organized, and the quotes--covering the full spectrum of sadness and anger to wisdom, humor, hope, and gratitude--are interspersed with the author's own moving story. Reading this has enabled me to relate with much greater understanding and confidence to those with Alzheimer's, and there is an excellent section on available resources. Voices of Alzheimer's is unique in the literature on the subject and deserves to become a classic in the field.

I read this book while awaiting biopsy results. It helped prepare me for a possible cancer diagnosis as it related to my family. It even provided a feeling of anticipation of growing closer ties with my children through cancer. This is a very well written book to help parents as they struggle with cancer and balancing life/children/therapies.

I came across this book after I was asked to give a presentation to parents at Gilda's Club about talking to children when you have been diagnosed with cancer. Dr. Wendy Harpham has lived the experience she writes about. This book is a remarkable resource providing invaluable information and help to anyone wondering how to tell his/her children he/she has been diagnosed with cancer and how to help the children deal with the ongoing challenges a family faces when a parent is fighting for his/her life.

Not only does this book deal with a very sensitive and difficult topic in a very intelligent, straightforward, sensitive, and psychologically healthy manner, but it teaches extremely valuable skills for parenting and coping with ANY troubles life may throw your way. The companion book for children does the very same thing, and very effectively teaches children coping skills in an encouraging, realistic, and safe way. Both books excel in highlighting and addressing differences between the ways adults process thoughts and emotions and the way children do this.

When my husband was diagnosed with cancer our children were 5 and 7 years old. This book gave us the tools to use to talk to them about cancer. Illness, chemotherapy and even death were topics that we suddenly had to confront. Dr. Harpham's book provided insight in dealing with a frigtening topic in a calm and reasuring manner.

I have been researching for answers to my personal intestinal problems for 4 years. This is one of my best resources. Easily understood. Everytime I go back to it, I learn something new. Helps fill in the blanks that the doctors don't explain aswell as give reasons for questions to ask your Doctor.

An Excellent Resource

Janowitz provides a good resource with this book, which provides an overview of possible conditions that affect the lower intestinal tract. This book is not just for someone with a chronic condition, although irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticulitis are covered. Janowitz also has excellent chapters on coping with the occasional food poisoning episode or traveler's diarrhea. His overview of the functioning of the intestinal tract is one the best I've come across in all my resources. As with most intestinal subjects, Janowitz doesn't have a lot of answers - more coping information - but he does seek to present diet and medical therapies for each condition. He does not spend enough time on alternative therapies or the various nutritional concerns that accompany lower GI problems. A good read and possibly a purchase if you suffer from one or more of the problems outlined.

One line is not enough to say how good this book is!

I look forward to reading his new book "Good Food for Bad Stomachs". I wish my GP had read this 10 years ago...(yes, I am bitter!)

Review: I use this book often, since like many Crohn's sufferers, I also deal with a broad spectrum of intestinal problems. In very clear and understandable language, Dr. Janowitz, a GI at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, and the author of Indigestion and Good Foods for Bad Stomachs provides information on the symptoms and causes of an array of intestinal problems, including IBS, Crohn's & UC, diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, colon cancer, food allergies, intestinal gas and more. He describes the latest tests and procedures (ie. colonoscopies, barium x-rays), medications, and surgical treatments and the risks each carry. This is one of my most used reference books on IBD and other problems, probably because he provides a lot of medical wisdom mixed with good common sense.
