I've been looking for such a book both in USA and China for a long time, and now I find it.

It's good for integrating the differentiate diagnosis. However, if there are more new MR techniques (DTI,PWI,etc.), it will be better.

The advantage of the graded approach, and the extraction in the text descriptions of key substantive points is excellent. Emphasis is on the findings, less on the academic differentials. Perfect to study along with detailed texts. The keys to the "Requisites" first edition is awesome: but anyone know where one can buy, beg, borrow, or steal a key to the Second edition of "Requisites"?

a great, portable book to run through cases when you're studying or on a less taxing rotation. interesting, well-displayed cases running the gamut of pathologies with concise, informative summaries and cross-referenced with the neurorad requisites.

Compact and to the point.

This is a great tool for the oral boards. I read it three times in preparing. The cases are diverse with a third section which is good more for CAQ than for dx boards. It is chock full of great info and cases. Its also fairly cheap. Well worth the money.

This book is a guide to sanity for those who have experienced mild brain injury, as I have. In the fall of 2000, I suffered an accidental fall and spent the following 15 months in a struggle to recover my 'real self". With the aid of this book, I am now fully functional again and able to cope with the minor relapses. I strongly recommend this book to those who suffer, their friends and caregivers.

I have read a number of books on the subject as I am a person who has a brain Injury. This book, more than any other I have read, has been extremely helpful to me. First of all because it explains so well what happens to the sufferer, both physiologically as well as emotionally. The book also gives lots of possitive suggestions for coping as well as for healing.

I fulheartedly recommend this book for both patients as well as their family and friends. It gives much understanding into the issue of brain injury and also much encouragement. It is an uplifting book, at least for me it was!

Thank you Gail Denton.

When my daughter suffered a severe concussion in a car accident on Father's Day, June 18, 2000, I was desperate for information about what to expect, what to hope for, and what to accept about her condition. I surfed the internet and chatrooms looking for information, and many "survivors" of mild brain trauma and their family members unanimously recommended this book. I bought it, and found in it an invaluable comfort and resource. It has been a difficult month, but it looks like my daughter will have a full recovery, at least in part thanks to the information we found in Brainlash. Recommended!

If you have suffered from a mild traumatic brain injury, as I have,"Brainlash" was the starting point of recovery for me. And I thank God for this book & Gail Denton every day. I quote a paragraph from the book that sums up the point I was at when I started to read BrainLash. "Brain injury races undetected, underdiagnosed, and undertreated through our society." "Between the medical professions ( untrained to recognize it), the insurance community ( unwilling to pay for it ), and the legal sector (unable to represent the loss or grasp the consequences), the mildly brain injured individual has little to rely on and less to go on." And NO!!!! your not going crazy, It just seems that way. The Book is easy to read and finially puts a name on, fully defines, and gives solutions to the symptoms feelings and thoughts that a brain injured person is experiencing but dosen't know why. It is also important to have your family and friends read it so they can try to understand what you are going thru even when you can't understand it yourself. From the resource section of the book I highly recomend that you consider attending the Sensory learning institute and having cranio-sacral therapy. It has been aprox 18 months since my accident and although I feel full recovery is obtainable, it is a long journey and my journey didn't start until I read this book and used its resources.

This book is a must have for patients and families of brain trauma. It clearly states symptoms and stages of the trauma. It tells you what to expect. It isn't a medical description but a patient to patient description in terms that anyone can comprehend. It is one excellent book. Thank you Gail Denton for writing this book.

just a point about 2.5 million neurons per minute
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-10
Brainscape, chapter II, page 37; 2.5 m. neurons per minutes are produces during prenatal life. Now take the book "The Amazing Brain", by Mr.Ornstein and Mr.Thompson, chapter 3,page 68, it says, "250,000 per minute" neurons during the development of a human fetus. Obviusly, I prefer your version Mr. Restak, it means much more neurons to spend during our life time without impairment. But, I just want to know who is right, because both of you can't be right and here we are talking about a huge contradiction regarding the neural theories explaining our future possibilities before birth. There is a legitimate intention to educate through these books, that is why I read them, but now I can't stay with this doubt created by these kind of books. Please educate me, and it would be an honor if Mr.Restak of any of his staff could answer this neurological dichotomy. Thank you very much for your attention.

A readable book for amateurs & beginners in neuroscience

Review Date: 1999-08-26
This book is a simple overview about the subject of contemporary neuroscience. It is not intended for senior students or professionals. However, it is a good book for amateurs, since it was written in simple lauguage. It also gives a sense to beginning students about what they are actually studying. Since the author is a neurologist, this book has been adopted an extreme neurological veiwpoint as references to all human behaviors. Readers should be cautious about this; however, it is nevertheless one important way to look at human behaviors. Also, the book is a good buy and should worth a bargain.

Scientifically sound, and very readable, anyone interested in the brain will find this introductory book enjoyable and to the point. This little green book is a definite must-have addition to any neuroscientist, educator, or anyone interested in the brain. Restak is a good writer, and not only weaves his words well, but uses the writings of others outside the field to make understanding the complicated workings of the brain understandable to someone who is just being introduced to it. I've used this particular book in several papers on deafness and cognition, and every once in a while I pick it up and reread parts of it (usually that I marked) that bear remembering. Certainly Restak is a remarkable writer, and thus probably a remarkable teacher. I wish I had had someone like him in Neuroscience...it would have helped tremendously to have someone so in love with his topic that he wants everyone to understand it. We need more science teachers and science writers like him to encourage young people to consider science as a possible career. And perhaps maybe if more people understood the brain, they would quit treating their own brains without regard to the damage they are doing to it by using drugs and alcohol, or misusing prescription drugs. An excellent introduction for the educated reader

Written for the layman, this slim (135 pages) volume by a neurologist is a very up to date and comprehensive review of what we know about the brain, its functional structure, the role of neurotransmitters and even a bit about the nature of conciousness.

Like Oliver Sachs, Restak focuses much of his attention on pathology, since not only is it the focus of neurologists, it also tells us quite a lot about the functional organization of the brain. Unlike Sachs, Restak delves deeply into the actual neuopathologies, the cells, the transmitters and the structure of the brain. While the level of detail is relatively superficial from a neuroanatomical point of view, the descriptions are still accurate and detailed; this would have been a nice introductory book to have for my first physiological psychology courses back in grad school.

As well as being an excellent teacher, Restak is an excellent storyteller. Each chapter reads like a good adventure, leading us through the neural pathways, or like a mystery, tracing the history of a particular neuropathology. If you enjoy the medical detective stories of Berton Rouche, or the essays of Lewis Thomas, you'll find much to interest you here.

Anyone who knows David knows what a loving and caring person he is. David has always put his patients' needs first. He always treats/treated them as if they are/were family. David is one of the best in his profession. I feel he did the right thing in "blowing the whistle". The families need to know what goes on behind closed doors when it comes to their loved ones in facilities such as these. I tip my hat to you, David.

It is sad to know that kind, caring, compassionate nurses like David are the exception when they should be the rule. It is heartbreaking to know that a book like this is even necessary. I applaud all of Mr. Sampley's efforts to make changes in the nursing home system. Once I started reading this book I did not put it down until the final word was read. If you ever contemplate putting a relative in a nursing home, read this book first.

I found Breaking the Code of Silence very informative and enlightening. If you have a friend or relative who resides, or may reside in a nursing home in the future, this is a must read for you and them. The author gives you the true insider look at what goes on behind the scenes in many nursing homes. Lets hope this sends a clear message to the operators of these facilities. It is sad that Mr. Sampley had to endure what he did, but his efforts may be the beginning of a campaign to change the way patients are treated in these homes.

This is a much more condensed and useful book than Fellen's. Lots of little CXRs with a good approach to tackling them. Both Fellens and this one are good. Fellen's is more a medical student level book, kinda like Dubin EKGs. While this is more on intern, resident level. But even my medical students enjoy this one.

There is also an abdominal film xray book similar to this one. Also very good. No one ever explains how to look at abdominal films, this does a good job.

Great little reference book. I am a FNP, and this is exactly the lecture I had wished I had on chest x-rays boiled to one simple readable book. Good for anyone just learning about them, and enough info to make you competant. Anything past this, ask a radiologist.

Great book for first year P.A. students studying radiology.

This little book starts off by actually teaching you HOW to read a CXR. Not many books do that ... they just assume that you can. Then it goes into the four broad categories of abnormalities: 1) too white, 2) too black, 3) too large and 4) in the wrong place which helps you to categorise abnormalities. Then all the major conditions (e.g. pneumonia, COPD, malignancies etc.) are reviewed under each category. Read this before you start you clinical years and keep it in your coat pocket along with 'The ECG made easy'. Look at heaps of CXRs and ECGs from the beginning of the year along with the help of these books. Practice makes perfect! Good luck! I wish someone had told me these things at the beginning of the year! ;)

The Child Health Guide is hands down the best, holistic book on pregnancy & parenting that I have found yet. I'm still learning stuff that I didn't know -- stuff that helps with my 15 year old!!
The author holds a degree in Oriental Medicine and focuses on scientific information to teach you to make healthier choices for you and your family.

Here's a sampling: Plastic Toys and Phthalates; Environmental Toxins In The Home; Chemicals To Avoid In Shampoo; Why Avoid Soy?; Which Sweeteners Are (Relatively) Safe & Sweeteners To Avoid; DHA Supplementation, Cod Liver Oil Nutrient Content, Fats For Children, etc.; The Most Important Foods To Avoid; Principles Of Holistic Pediatrics For Parents; Vaccines -- Making An Informed Choice.

There is an entire section that focuses on managing acute illness, treatment at home & when to seek outside help.

There is so much more. This IS the book to get for someone looking to get pregnant and raise healthy children!!

When I first started this book, I was concerned that it would be too general for me, as I'm pretty granola already. But as I kept reading, I was pleasantly surprised! It turned out to have lots of great info I didn't know before...I'm really glad I found it! It's a good overview of basic child healthcare, and gives lots of practical advice. Because I read it, I'll know not to panic if my child should get a fever that sounds high to me, for instance...Neustaedter explains why fevers can be beneficial, and when to leave them alone, and when to help them go down naturally. There are lots of other great tips, as well as homeopathic remedies.

This is so important for new parents and parents who want to make more informed choices with their second or third etc.
The philosophy behind this book is "don't just believe what your pediatrician is telling you to do". Expand your beliefs and resources for the health of your child. There's so much solid info regarding dietary and environmental influences on your child's health, it's amazing.
We would have done things very differently in regards to our son's "spitting up" issues had we read this book earlier and not just followed the advice of our pediatirican to jump on meds which never worked anyway. Fortunately once we saw meds weren't improving the situation we looked further for an osteopath and a homeopath who actually were more effective in resolving his reflux / spitting up issues.
So hooray for Randall Neustaedter for writing this enlightening book!
It's a must have for all.

This kind of information can be difficult to get your hands on... What plastics are safe? Do you need to filter your water and what kind is best? What about vaccines and flouride? What tests are necessary for the newborn? Some other topics include: newborn basics, how to co-sleep safely, and how to wrap a matress to reduce the incidence of SIDS.
Nutrition is covered, including allergies. For instance, did you know soy is NOT an appropriate food for babies? For parents who need to give formula there are several recipes for home-made formulas (milk-based, goatmilk-based, liver-based, and how to supplement store-bought formulas).
Other pertinant information includes teething, common childhood illnesses (colds, fevers, ear-aches, etc.) with explanations on how and when to treat with homeopathic remedies, along with chapters about each stage of childhood.
This book is a must-own for ALL PARENTS who want the straight facts in one easy-to-read format.

A wealth of botanical information including specific conditions, their prevention and treatment with botanicals; the text is well-referenced, indexed and has useful appendices. We higly recommend this be used by healthcare practioners interested in the use of botanical medicine and read by anyone interested in natural pathways for health and healing.

Based in clinical experience

Review Date: 2004-03-14
At last an herb book that is rational, well-documented, and based on true clinical experience. While there are many books on botanical medicine available, this volume is truly informed; the book is written by accomplished clinicians and not researchers who write from literature searches, without true clinical experience as a foundation. Yarnell, a Naturopathic physician and Abascal, a Registered Clinical Herbalist, discuss herbs and clinical treatment plans in their full complexity and do not simplify their approach as is so common in today's herb books. Additionally, because Hooper the editor, is a medical doctor, the truly holistic approach that shines through in this book, provides further credibility to Yarnell's and Abascal's work. While the empirical observations of clinical experience are paramount in this volume, Yarnell and Abascal also support their approach with the available research. Perhaps this is why the American Botanical Council has sourced this book for its online database.
Another positive for the book is that besides the same old tired herbs that everyone is talking about in natural food stores, the lesser known herbs that competently trained clinicians are actually using are also covered. This provides a wider range of options for clinical work and offers clinical insights into Anemopsis (Yerba Mamsa), Bupleurum, and Opuntia (Prickly Pear), and other lesser known herbs.
There is also a toxicology section that covers such herbs as Lobelia inflata, Artemesia absinthium (wormwood), Piper methysticum (kava) and the pyrolizidine containing herbs such as Symphytum officinalis (comfrey). The relative toxicity (or lack thereof) besides the political issues of such herbs are discussed. This is a unique addition to modern books on botanical medicines.
Clinical Botanical Medicines with its four parts;
I Treatment or Prevention of Specific Disorders
II Special Formulas
III Specific Herbal Medicines
IV Issues in Botanical Medicine
targets the medical professional seeking a practical but researched-based approach to using herbal medicines.

This is a wonderful, serious book. The text respects the history of herbal medicine, yet provides peer reviewed literature references for the statments made. The chapters cover important topics, such as hypertension, various cancers, and addiction. I look forward to other work from these authors that would address difficult topics such as the treatment of insomnia, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and heart disease.

The authors of this book are carrying on the traditions of received from their teachers, some of the great scholars of herbal medicine; Michael Moore, Silena Heron, and James Duke.

This is a treasured new resource for me. When I want some practical advice on herbal remedies, and not the same old echoes, this is my favorite. It is as the title implies, a great source book on herbal medicine for the clinician. And it doesn't shy away from specific dosing details. There are lots of interesting new herbal suggestions here. I'll be citing it frequently, in my teaching and writing. Jim Duke, retired USDA medical botanist.

There have been more books written on botanical medicine than any other subject, including religion. These books run the full spectrum of usefulness, approach, and accuracy. As a clinical herbalist and passionate student of botanical medicine, I have found this book to certainly rank within the top three. It is very easy to spend arm loads of money when studing and researching herbs while attempting to sorce solid/practical knowledge which will ally with clinicians and students alike. The key to saving money is to target the most well deserved educational tools. This book is a finely cut gem that is put forth by authors who really know their stuff. It looms together a blend of the traditional and scientific aspects of medicine. Truly a post mark book for the continually emerging sophistication of Naturopathy. This clearly written source can be of value to students, teachers, and practitioners who are involved with botanical medicine.

This book does a great job at providing information for clinicians by clinicians! Being a student of botanical medicine I also found the reccommendations of some quality educational programs in the Appendix useful. I have found this book to be stimulating and inspiring.

In short, if you are interested in botanical medicine, it is in your best interests to make an effort in obtaining this awesome book.

I took the classes & didn't understand much but as soon as I got this book I read it about 20 times before i took the exam. I believe this is the one reason i passed the exam and i recommend this book to anyone that wants to pass the exam. I learned more from this book than the Teachers i had in class and i had no prior knowledge of coding. But I passed the Exam on the first try and I am the youngest coder in the hospital. So it's worth the extra money so you can pass the exam on the first try :) good luck!!!

great resource for the cpc exam!

I believe this book helped me pass my CPC exam. The CD ROM is great because it keeps track of your time (which is just like the real exam). Great product

This book was very helpful for preparing for my exam.

I thought this book was very informative and helpful in preparing me for the CPC Exam.I liked the Cd-Rom which was included because that helped me monitor my own progress in reference to what i learned from the material in the book and also if I could complete the exam in the time allotted for me to take it.I would recommend future exam books like these to others who may be taking the same exam in the future.

GREAT GREAT GREAT!

As a fan of military history, I was happy to find a book that tries its best to give a feel for the moment of that historic day. The little extras that are to be found is well worth the price and would be a great Christmas present to a history buff.

This is a fine tribute to our veterans!

To experience the unprecedented valor of these soldiers!

Excellent prose and documentation of this historic event.
The book's top secret memos, the diaries of the foot soldiers,
and the immense planning and undertaking of this invasion, as recorded in this book, provided me with an indelible impression
and an appreciation of my parents who were members of this worlds "Greatest Generation."

I will recommend it to any young people who are beginners in the study of WWII and want to understand the history of their country and why we now feel and live the way we do especially
from a military and human point of view.

Wow!

This book is incredible. It can't be described in words. It is basically a giant scrapbook of d-day - the liberation of Paris. It has pop-out maps and documents that where written to the soldiers e.g. by Eisenhower. If you read a book on world war two you get the normal information, but this book has detail, pictures - and what I call reading easter eggs - inside of it so that it really brings d-day + to life. I know amazon is selling the book for about $30 dollars, and thats probably how much to make the book, but it's educational value and its interest value to me would be over $200. I have to say this is the best book (it's really a scrapbook) that I have ever read. The other good thing about the book is you can pick it up any time and read a section that you seem to be interested in (even though all the sections are interesting). This to me is one of those things that I can show my kids and my grandkids in the years to come. Buy this book and you won't regret it, or miss a single penny that you spent.

Almost there

Put 'D-Day' into Amazon's book search and you'll come up with over two hundred titles and I expect most will be about the momentous events in June 1944. This book covers them as an 'experience' and I think it does it rather well. Don't be put off when you see it only has sixty-four pages because it includes a lot of other things as well. There are fifty plus printed items which are facsimiles of maps (one is a German map thirty by twenty-two inches) military reports, logbooks, posters, soldiers diaries, a newspaper page, letters and more, they are either stuck on the pages or in envelopes to be removed and examined. One of the nice things is that the reproduction of these extras is particularly good and they do really help to create the experience.

Each spread covers one event with a mix of text, photos (with good captions) a map and other graphics all beautifully presented in a scrapbook format. If I have a criticism it is that the maps, which have a lot of information, are rather small so I had to use John Man's Atlas of the D-Day and Normandy Landings to fully understand the flow of events. While looking at this treasure of printed material you can also hear on the included CD (seventy minutes) the voices of men who were there and made it happen.

This is almost a unique publication but while looking through the Amazon list I came across 'Our finest day: D-Day: June 1944' (ISBN 0811830500) which also presents historical documents as reproductions to be handled but I'll stick with this D-Day experience, I don't think it can be beat.
