This book is very informative not only for experienced Dialysis professionals but also for those who are new to this sub-specialty. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a book that is very readable and covers the topics necessary without using terminology that is too technical and complicated to understand.

I used this book at a study guide for the nursing certification test in 2000. I passed with flying colors. It is comprhensive and to the point. There wasn't a subject in the test that was not covered in this book as well. This book is a much easier read than the ANNA curriculum. If you are looking to study for the CNN or CDN then look no further.

Really hard to find something like it (Nunez, Eccles and Shepherd work is some how on that level), and almost impossible to find a better one. A classic neuroscience work!

Like the brain itself

Review Date: 2008-05-16
The Buzsaki book on brain rhythms is a marvellous tour of neuroscience from the cellular through the behavioural to the wisely hypothetical. The concepts are presented in loops and cycles, with deep foot-notes, analogous to the brain mechanisms Buzsaki so clearly and entertainingly describes. Again, modelling brain processes themselves, Buzsaki has interacted with colleagues from many disciplines outside biology to emerge with succinct accounts of neural mechanisms.

Particularly enjoyable in this content-packed book, is that Buzsaki incorporates historical gems to acknowledge the origins of many of the fundamental ideas.

In the course of a few months, this book has become my most thumbed and dog-eared neuroscience reference.

Nearly every brain oscillation is discussed, and importantly, the descriptions are very detailed, ad aided by numerous footnotes and useful references. I recommend this book to anyone interested in brain waves, their interactions, functions and their possible origins.

Also a word of warning: despite, or perhaps because of the completeness of the text, the book may not be very reader-friendly in some places: Full understanding of new theories or topics may require additional reading of the references, chiefly in chapter 11 and 12. Also, everyone I know who read this book took a pretty long time reading it through. In a way, it is not so much an explanation as it is a reference book.
If you have not read other books dealing with this subject, I recommend reading 'A Universe Of Consciousness' by Edelman and Tononi, first.

Brain functon, not just structure
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-11
This makes an excellent complement to Christof Koch's The Quest for Consciousness: A Neurobiological Approach. Koch's book is oriented to structure and hierarchical wiring, while Buzsaki's book is devoted to what goes through those wires- the large-scale firing and oscillations whose meaning is still mostly unclear, but whose persistence and complexity have captivated researchers for well over a hundred years. Which is more successful at illuminating consciousness? Buzsaki, by a mile! I found Koch's book somewhat disappointing, since after a huge build up of pretty well-known visual system anatomy and processing, his treatment of consciousness amounts to a brief bit of hand-waving. Buzsaki, on the other hand, while he does not make grand claims to even deal with consciousness, illuminates more of the temporal integration that is going on in the brain, and which will be absolutely central to plumbing this question. He also leaves the reader with extremely penetrating observations about consciousness- as a whole-brain phenomenon (or at least a whole-cortex), that it must be continuously graded with the size of brains, and that it is deeply connected with timing- with an approximate simultaneity of experience and integrated signal processing.

All that said, it is important to note that while Buzsaki is capable of excellent writing, such as in the introductory cycles (chapters), he routinely loses sight of the reader when presenting his own work and fields he is close to (in the middle and later cycles). The reader has to plow through mountains of unintroduced anatomy, private thoughts that seem never to have met an editor, and woefully under-enlarged and under-annotated illustrations. One wants to give him the benefit of the doubt that he is not covering up a lack of understanding, but the text can be trying at times, at least for the non-specialist. I would encourage work on a second edition where typos and illustrations are fixed, where all anatomy mentioned in the text is illustrated and described, and where substantial parts of the later cycles are re-written- expanded where there is substance, or cut where speculations and caveats outstrip the material.

The beat goes on!

I wasn't sure if I should purchase this at first or not. I was not in need of a planner since I use a palm pilot to keep track of my appointments and school work. I was just going to purchase RN-notes instead since it has a lot of information. I ended up buying both. I highly recommend this book/planner. The first half is a book with 177 pages of information about nursing school and things that will be SO helpful and enlightening to new students, and it will also be useful after graduation as well. I feel much more prepared to start school in a few weeks after reading this. RN-notes is great for clinicals or practing nurses, but it won't help you much with being introduced to the field. Buy both, and you're set!

I know for a fact that I'd benefit from this planner 100%, not just at the time being but for as long I will be practicing nursing. I'm a student nurse and this is just a total must-have! Makes a great gift, too. What a thoughtful idea! It really helps to eliminate some if not most of the fears a student nurse is most likely to encounter. This is definitely not just another planner. You'd feel armed with just the right stuffs necessary to thrive while in nursing school, doing clinicals, and yes, I'd like to add, what a good item for the NCLEX review!

I just finished reading this book this week.. Had the book for over a year.. not sure why I waited to read it.. It was an excellent book.. Throughly enjoyed it, couldn't put it down.. except to go to work. I cried when one of the flight medics gets killed by being hit by a car while working a MVA.. Just shows how much they put their lives on the line to save others.. They are by far the everyday heroes we never really get to meet, but they are on the streets and in the air to help save people who suddenly find themselves in trouble.. Speaking from experience from being involed in a MVA. Thank You.

This is one of the few books that I have had to read all in 1 sitting! I could not put it down. I laughed out loud, I cried, I clenched my muscles, my heart palpitated, I relaxed. Talk about an all around best read! Everyone should buy one to give for Christmas. Don't know whether you'd get a more true to life book than this one. Definitely shows the life of a flight nurse! A sequel to this story is a MUST! Hope Pat Jensen's fingers have time to fly over the keyboard another time or two.

I am hoping to be a medevac pilot in the army, so I thought I would read this book to get some kind of a feel for the civilian side of air ambulance. I found this book to be excellent. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the medical conditions and the way Pat paints such a clear picture of the medevac life. I would give the book 5 stars but some of the sappiness got to me at times. All in all, one of the best books I've read in a while.

As the Alternative Health guru at Lifetips.com, I am constantly looking for books and products to share with visitors to my site that can help take the mystery or confusion out of alternative/natural healing. This is definitely one of those items.

If you're looking for an easy-to-understand and well-researched book on a natural approach to dealing with depression, then this is the book for you. Dr. Cass shares case histories many might identify with and she has done her homework in deftly explaining the important factors one must understand to deal effectively with depression. She also provides great tips on nutritional steps and lifestyle changes that must go hand-in-hand if one is serious about defeating depression. This wonderful book CAN offer help to those struggling to get a handle on dealing with depression naturally.

This is a great guide to the healing effects of an ancient medicinal plant that has gained great popularity in the last decade based on scientific findings. The author first looks at the problem of depression by discussing the biochemistry of the brain and the relationship between mental and physical health.

St John's Wort (hypericum) offers a gentle way of treating depression and other nervous disorders. Cass discusses the scientific proof of the efficacy of this herb as measured against synthetic antidepressants. The research is indeed encouraging and the plant's mild side effects provide a great advantage over the synthetic medicines.

The author explores the correct dosage for various problems like sleep and seasonal affective disorders (SADs) whilst pointing out the herb's anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune enhancing properties. Besides the well-known hypericin, St John's Wort also contains a host of other phytochemicals that play vital roles in protecting cells from damage, in repairing damage and in regeneration.

These ingredients include GABA, carotenoids, flavonoids, hyperforin, limonene, lutein, phytosterols, quercetin, quercetrin, rutin and xanthones. All parts of the plant, the flowers, leaves, stem and the oil are used in healing. One of the possible side effects of taking St John's Wort is sensitivity to the sun in certain people.

The book includes a bibliography, a natural medicine resources list, a protocol for switching a patient from an anti-depressant to St John's Wort and the regulatory status of St John's Wort in various countries. It concludes with an index. I also recommend Mind Boosters by Ray Sahelian and The A to Z Guide to Supplements by Phyllis A Balch for further information on herbal medicines.

Very informative and easy to read!

I bought this book (and a bottle full of St. John's Wort!) after two deaths in my immediate family pushed me over the edge of depression. It talks about the different forms of depression, how St. John's Wort helps with the symtoms and who should or shouldn't try the herb. It gives a lot of study cases of people Dr. Cass worked with and also offers some statistical information on research. All of it is put in a very readable and enjoyable form and I finished the book in a couple of bedtime reading sessions (definitely important when you're reading about something that you hope and pray will help you with your current state of depression!) I highly recommend both the book and the herb to anyone thinking they may suffer from depression.

As a fourth year orthopedic surgery resident this book has been of invaluable help in learning and reviewing the classic surgical approaches to the muskuloskeletal apparatus and its associated anatomy. This is a great book with most of the surgical approaches that I've come in contact with. It combines concise descriptions of the anatomy with graphics in a nice, easy-to-access way.

The arthroscopic chapters are a little lame but the classical, exposures are simply a must for any resident that want to learn the different exposures.

When comparing, I find that the latest edition hasn't added that much to the book and I wouldn't recommend getting the latest edition unless your very into colors.

Great but very expensive book

I believe all hospital libraries should hold a copy of this excellent book. The price is rather steep for an individual and therein lies my only crib against this book. I had to fork over almost a month's pay to get my copy. On to what I think of the content.

Clear descriptions aided with crisp colour drawings make most exposures a breeze. This is an ideal book to look through before stepping into the OR. It is also I believe the only effort to approach anatomy from the orthopaedic surgeon's point of view. All good.

Bottom line: Con your hospital/department to buy it for you. If they refuse to play ball, start saving because you want this one on your desk.

Review Date: 2004-01-28
This is an absolutely great and needed book!!! Breast cancer seems to run in my family and after seeing two grandmothers suffer from it, I decided to take things into my own hands! I decided to research prevention a little more after picking up a pamphlet from the American Cancer Society at my doctors office and under the "Best Defense" for Breast Cancer they listed only early detection! While breast exams and mammography are important, they only detect cancer once it has hit you!!

I thought it was ridiculous that the American Cancer Society would say nothing about diet and excercise, and the multitudes of carcinogenic chemicals, and not give us any concrete ways to actually prevent breast cancer! As the author of this book says - in only about 30% of breast cancer cases do any of the traditional 'risk factors' (such as family history of the disease, late menarche, late pregnancy, etc) play any part! And breast cancer rates in the U.S. have been rising for the last several decades, while there are some groups of women that are not as afflicted with breast cancer! There is so much we can do to help PREVENT breast cancer, which is the topic of this book!

This book is a great source of information and a great resource that brings in together many different facets of breast cancer causes and prevention - from alcohol use, to pesticide use, to water filtration, to animal fat and other diet concerns, to excercise and stress reduction, etc, etc.
This book has a great section on all the good kinds of food to eat and hints and recipes on how to incorporate them into your diet. It also has a great section talking about excercise programs, and several diagrams of proper stretching techniques. It also has a chapter for parents of young girls - to help even further reduce thier risk of developing breast cancer when they are an adult.

I have already bought a copy of this book for my mom and grandma, and am considering getting it for all my aunts and female cousins! This is a GREAT book, and I wish they could somehow get all the information in it to every woman!

Every woman should buy this book!

Ever since my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer I have read almost anything I can get my hands on regarding this dreadful disease. This book is by far the most outstanding I have read. I wish I had looked here first. Joseph Keon's 7-step plan is remarkable and so very easy to read. I've read it from cover to cover 3 or 4 times and have tried almost all of the recipes he suggests. They are just fantastic. I've watched my weight and exercised regularly most of my life....now I feel that, with his help, I'm on the right track with nutrition, too. If only we all would follow his advice, maybe there would be less people having to deal with breast cancer. I highly recommend reading this book.

The Truth About Breast Cancer: A 7-Step Prevention Plan is a soundly researched and highly accessible work that offers practical, useful information about breast cancer and what those at risk can do to prevent it. Joseph Keon surveys and explains the risk factors for breast cancer, offers a complete seven-step approach to preventing breast cancer, and four chapters dedicated to "Cooking for Health" and transitioning to a risk-avoidance dietary life-style. Enhanced with resource lists, extensive notes, and an index, The Truth About Breast Cancer is highly recommended, life-saving reading specifically and successfully designed for the non-specialist general reader.

Joseph Keon, Ph.D. says "women can do much more to reduce the risk of breast cancer than perform self-exams and subject themselves to mammograms." In The Truth About Breast Cancer: A 7-Step Prevention Plan, Keon describes the known causes of cancer and presents ways that every woman can reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.

He shows how "most cancer is strongly related to environmental factors and lifestyle choices to which we expose ourselves." These are factors and choices which individuals can control, at least to a certain extent.

Although statistics from the American Institute for Cancer Research shows that "between 30 and 50 percent of all breast cancer can be prevented through a healthful diet and regular exercise," the focus in mainstream medicine remains on treating breast cancer, rather than on preventing it.

Some risk factors can't be changed. For example, more women than men develop breast cancer, and a family history of breast cancer increases an individual woman's risk. Other factors are subject to limited choices, such as whether or not to reduce your risk by becoming pregnant while young, choosing whether or not to breast-feed, or opting for estrogen-replacement therapy.

Factors like alcohol consumption, weight, smoking, stress, exposure to radiation (X-rays), and diet are, however, under the control of most women. Of all these, good nutrition is the most important factor in preventing breast cancer. A diet high in dairy products is exceptionally unhealthy. (Contrary to popular commercials, dairy products can cause a net loss of calcium, leaving no reason to consume them.)

Dr. Keon also presents an extensive discussion of how various other foods affect the immune system, either strengthening the body's defenses, or weakening them so that individuals become susceptible to disease.

His 7-step program includes eating a healthy diet (one that is free of animal fats), choosing organically-grown foods (to minimize intake of harmful chemicals), drinking pure water (again, to minimize harmful chemicals), reducing the use of toxic chemicals in your home, avoiding alcohol, exercising, and meditating to reduce stress. He provides detailed instructions for implementing all seven steps.

Dr. Keon also discusses the fact that girls are reaching puberty at younger and younger ages--some as early as three years old. This significantly increases their chances of developing breast cancer as women. He offers suggestions to mothers on how to protect their children, primarily by starting healthy habits when they're young.

Dr. Keon says "the Truth About Breast Cancer will help you understand the ways you may be at risk for breast cancer, and how you can take this knowledge and use it to make real-life changes that reduce your risk and increase your level of health, your overall well-being, and your peace of mind."

It's a book that every woman needs to read.

I'm a sonographer in a general ultrasound department of a hospital, graduated last year. I was looking through Amazon's list of general resource books for ultrasound, and took a chance on this one. VERY glad I did! This is a great book to keep around in the department, or even to study from. Great images, extensive topic coverage, and well laid out. I would recommend it to anyone in a similar position, no matter the experience. Not much in the way of neonatal ultrasounds, and I wish there was more on vascular, but it really does a great job with Abdomen, OB/GYN, small parts, etc.

I am a second year radiology resident. I just completed my first US rotation. I used this book and thought it was great. It has nice pictures and a well-put-together text. All in all, I highly recommend it. One of the best of the Requisites series!

Good Information on Handling How We Die

Between author William H. Colby's role as the attorney for the family of Nancy Cruzan - who fought for the removal of her feeding tube, when she was in a Persistent Vegetative State 15 years before the Schiavo case dominated national discourse - and "Unplugged"'s subtitle, "Reclaiming our Right to Die in America", you might expect unsubtle advocacy. Colby doesn't give it, however; and although he talks about being impartial at excessive length, he does stick to the facts when the 3 individual cases (Karen Ann Quinlan, Nancy Cruzan, and Terri Schiavo) on the right-to-die issue he discusses are brought up.

The most valuable part of the book was the grounding Colby gives in the evolution of Medical Technology and the role this has played in the debate and how it's arisen; it's striking how new these issues are and how much they are dependent on technology. PVS patients weren't sustainable at all in the past - the term wasn't even coined until 1972 - and the different between the extensive surgery for a feeding tube for Quinlan and Cruzan, and the simple procedure for Schiavo, is vast; it may get even simpler tomorrow. Given that debates have turned on how extreme the measures taken are - and how hopeless a situation is - the moral debates are going to continually change as technology develops, a situation Colby illustrates well.

He also shows the potential pitfalls in living wills and the legal mess that still surrounds this issue; his solution is a power of attorney form and discussion with your loved ones. Giving them the power to make decisions and extensive knowledge of what you wanted is a good; a united family with clear knowledge of your desires is unlikely to have trouble carrying them out. Even if the point in the book is repeated ad nauseum.

The book is repetitive, though this is not always his fault - he provides a necessary accounting of the Schiavo case, which can't avoid covering the endless repetitive and futile appeals. All in all, "Unplugged" covers a lot of useful ground that was missed in the shouting atmosphere surrounding the Schiavo case; brief tie-ins of related issues (such as assisted suicide) add to the use of the book not as taking another side in the debate but giving information you can use decided where you stand and what you should do about it.

"Unplugged" is a book everyone who is going to die should read. It tells you what you need to do to make sure your wishes are respected when it comes to end-of-life decisions. Doing that will spare your loved ones unnecessary anguish. This book, believe it or not, is an engaging page turner and my 90-year-old mother just read it. We took its advice, talked about her wishes, and she now has a notarized health care power-of-attorney, giving us both much peace of mind. All this thanks to Colby's wonderfully written, timely, important book.

If you have read William Colby's book Nancy Cruzan, The Long Goodbye, you will find his latest book equally informative. Mr. Colby provides an excellent medical history that has brought us to our current debate about killing vs. allowing individuals to die. He shares recent cases and offers insight to both sides of the issue. This book should be read by anyone who has been faced with making end-of-life care decisions and by all who want to ensure that their end-of-life care is clearly understood.

The right-to-die debate is once again tackled; this time by a lawyer who represented Nancy Cruzan in the first right- to-die case heard by the Supreme Court. While Nancy Cruzan's struggles were chronicled in a prior book by Colby, Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right To Die In America offers a broader perspective on the topic, moving beyond Cruzan's struggle to offer answers to legal, ethical, medical and personal issues involved in the debate. Court records, interviews and the authors' own experiences lend to the discussion of current laws, proposed changes, and their effects on society.

A very well written book relating real life experiences that many of its' readers will face during their lifetime. This book gives us a taste of what others go through when a loved one or friend is in need of comfort, love, and strength. It seems to come natural to some, but most of us feel awkward and don't know what to do or say. These narratives open a window into their grief and allows us to see what a person really needs during these difficult times.
