This memoir written by the daughter of a woman that had polio and a history of polio is an excellent book. I really felt like I knew the author, her mother and the whole polio experience much better after I read this book.

As a polio survivor myself, I am fascinated by the biographies of others. I am very much reminded of TO CATCH THE SNOWFLAKES, another survivor who did not allow himself to be a victim.

Kathryn Black's journey to understand her mother's struggle with polio is well written and poignant--a definite contribution to appreciating the human condition. This book is worth every penny.

As a daughter of a polio survivor, I found this book to be an excellent resourse. the excellent research and doucumentation of a social and scientific phenomena of this century.

The book was inspirational and taught me a lot about the disease- things I never knew; but when I read the summary for this book, I thought it was going to be a story, not a research paper. Yes, Ms. Black does tell snippets of her mother's story every other chapter, but there is so much nitty gritty info in between- unless you want to know the entire history of the disease, don't buy this book. I did, thinking I would get an in depth view into the life of a family affected by polio, and instead got, for the most part, an essay on the history and effects of polio. Please don't be mislead by the title- it's a good title, but it conveys a personal and intimate sense which is not entirely present in the book itself. I hope my experience with this book helps you in the future.

The course that I will be taking this semester is language development and disorder from birth through adolescence and this book is a required text. I have already read through the book just to make sure I can keep up with the pace of the class. I am really impressed with the organization and readability. There are wonderful charts and visuals that really helped to solidify concepts. IEP sample pages are just general so be sure to look at what your state offers. There are great sample forms for you to tweak and use and the tables a color coded. So much less highlighting. I will definitely be using this book often well beyond the parameters of this course!

This textbook is great! Although I am not taking the class, I am enjoying the book. I am already in the field and the class size was limited, so they gave me the name of textbood they will be using an I purchased the book. I can see myself and colleages buying additional books in our field in the future. Thank you.

This has to be one of the top 5 books in the field. Dr. Paul is the most devoted of scholars, and you can tell this from the careful way in which the text is composed. Her editorial style is highly readable, and her vast knowledge and wisdom do not come across in the horrible erudite manner that so many texts do. This is a wonderful treasure for every single SLP's library.

The revised version proven to be another paramount work by Professor Rhea Paul. It contains more updated contents written in a search-easy format. The updated knowledge captures the latest development in speech-language pathology for children. The author inspires the readers to be up-front with newest evidence-based practice.

I liked this writer's ability to go deeper and talk about very personal emotional issues related to having MS.

Anyone that has MS needs to read this book!! This book gave me a different outlook on my life. I find myself laughing at myself all the time and Dean let me know that was normal. (If Normal is a word for MS'ers) Please read this book and allow your family to read it also. Your family will understand MS better especially without all the medical terms. Thank you Dean for writing this book.

i love this book! i've had ms for 20 years and dean kramer is just sooo on the mark! i laughed so much and so hard--it was wonderful! i am sending it to my mom and dad who always want to know what's going on (i'm 56 but always their child) and sending it to my daughters! i asked my hubby to read it altho of everyone, he is living ms with me day to day. the book just describes things so well---way to go ms kramer--thank you!

I once gave a small smile to a doctor over one of MS's odd effects, and he glared at me and said, "Why are you laughing about this?" Well, gee, Doc--what are my alternatives? I wish Dean had been beside me with her wry wit to tell him how the cow ate the cabbage when it comes to living with one of the goofiest diseases on the planet. There is so much over which we have no control, but surrendering humor should not be a requirement, no matter how much grumpy doctors or grumpy others think it should be.
Thank you, Dean, for the gift of your observations and writing that lifts our spirits. This cow thinks it's fine cabbage--and I'm definitely a fan.

The book made me laugh and also made me cry seeing myself in many of the same situations.This is a book that everyone that has MS or has a family member that has MS should read.

The concepts in this book work. The long-term care center where my mother spent her final nine months actually introduced me to the concepts of the Eden alternative, and indicated that many residents were feeling more content and "stable" with the presence of animals and plants in the individuals' rooms and throughout the facility. An indoor fountain was donated to the lobby. My mom was delighted when a parakeet magically appeared one day to become her roommate for many months. There were small birds in various rooms and lobbies, often donated by families or staff. Bunnies and dogs made weekly visits to residents, and each floor had a free-roaming cat. I especially loved one who occasionally cruised into Mom's room to check up on its feathered friend in the cage.

Long-term care MUST change to meet the needs of aging boomers, though they may be aging well for their years; bodies eventually fail as life closes. Mr. Thomas has the ideas and vision to change the course of eldercare so that the wisdom and dignity of the elderly can be recognized in society, enabling them to remain assets rather than burdens.

As a Regional Ombudsman, responsible for a large county in N. CA, I used this book to inspire people to form a "Family Council" in a sample nursing home and to lobby for the changes that Thomas recommends. The home adopted several of the changes and they transformed the home, once known as the worst in the county into the best. Several people emerged from years of depression, others simply took a whole new interest in life, others simply had whole-hearted laughter reenter their lives for the fist time in years. The Eden alternative is indeed the "recipe" for making one's years in long term care "worth living."

Anyone planning to place their family member in a nursing home should read this innovative book first. They author's insightful, yet relatively simple ideas show how a well designed nursing home can be a welcoming, life affirming place for your loved one to live. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an medical supply business and often discuss nursing home related issues with my clients and customers. I found this book eyeopening and educational. If your relative is already in a nursing home, give the director a copy of this book.

The activities director at my mother's nursing home(Tn.) brought this author and his book's to my attention. The nursing home administrator is currently having the entire staff read this line of book's(The Eden Project). I ordered "Life Worth Living" and "Learning From Hannah", because I want to be a part of what will make mom's life and other's a better place to be. I started reading "Life Worth Living" and was honestly amazed about how educational this paperback really was. Not only is this book easy to understand, it's extremely interesting! I can only pray that some day all nursing home facilities realize how beneficial the "Eden Project" really is.

This book will show how to turn a cold clinical facility into a warm, caring home. A place families want to visit, not make exuses to avoid. This truly can be revolutional. Anyone placing a person into a nursing facility should make sure they have Edenized.

Hi Everyone...This book is amazing. I'm going into Neurology Residency, and got this book to prepare myself. The text is really well written, thorough, very detailed, and easy to follow. Not as thick as I imagined though.

It is clear much care has been taken in the writing of this text.I am involved in medical student teaching and this book has been very useful. Neuroanatomy and related topics has always been a bit difficult for many students and this text puts things in a concise,thourough fashion.I have also used it personally on numerous occasions to help review some relatively uncommon clinical scenarios.

A book intended to instruct with quality, including the tiniest details of the complex neuroanatomy and its semiology. Every neurologist should at least read it.

Once you have mastered clinical neurology and passed the boards, you need this book. It contains all the neurotrivia, all the elements of clinical localization that you need at the bedside and simply can't keep in your brain from day to day.

I'm not talking about elementary stuff like the common etiologies of acute 3rd nerve palsy or the basic elements of the Brown-Sequard syndrome. That stuff is in here but it's assumed that you know it already. No, I'm talking about things like, for example, the differential of sector palsy of the iris sphincter, or the masterful discussion of simple ways to separate out a pupil blown from a Pcomm aneurysm from one that accidentally had some albuterol dripped into it.

Dry: yes, it is. Dull - if you flip it open at random, it makes excellent bedside reading for insomniacs, it'll put you right to sleep. But when you are faced with a physical finding and don't know how to incorporate it into the clinical picture, there is NO SUBSTITUTE for this book. If I were stranded on a desert island and forced to practice neurological diagnosis with only my extensive training and one book to help me, this would be that book.

I took many interesting courses in my early-1980s MBA program: strategy formulation, marketing, consumer behavior, and others. But the most exciting course was taught by Vijay Govindarajan. A star in higher education in India and later in the United States, VG (as we students called him) had us on the edge of our seats each and every class. Using the "case method," he embedded what he wanted us to learn inside interesting business problems, and he challenged us to solve them. My classmates and I energetically debated the cases both before and after class. The subject VG taught? Accounting.

Americans who criticize the pharmaceutical industry need to read this important book. Author Shook went behind locked doors to show us an insight on the tremendous costs and risks that these pharmaceutical corporations take. We all complain about the high costs of medicine, but Shook clearly describes the years of work and dedication by brilliant scientists as well as the many millions of dollars that these corporations front to bring a new medicine to the market place. I still may complain about the cost of my prescriptions, but I am now appreciative of the many dedicated people in the industry who made my medicines available.

There are two elements to any industry. Research and making money. At no point we should question the integrity of people who do everything they can to find cures for human ailments. This book tells all that. In this world of Wall Street expectations to show quick and continuous profits, some times, Pharma companies might make some bad judgment calls and those decisions cause more harm than anything. Pharma is being criticized for its practices in drug research with all the myths and lies, and at the same time pushing those companies to produce and show quick returns on stock market so that investors can make quick profit without realizing the effort that goes into the research, clinical trials and marketing of a drug. Drugs are not commodities and only that realization can put things perspective to everyone.

For years, the media has been knocking Big Pharma,and many of us are be duped into believing that the pharmaceutical companies are deceptive, devious and inhererently evil. Even the movie, "The Constant Gardener," a fictious story, has influenced public opinion to think that Big Pharma will do anything for the almighty dollar.

Robert L. Shook, a highly respected independent business writer, with no ties to the pharmaceutical industry has penned an eye-opening book that takes the reader behind the scenes of seven companies--Abbott, AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis amd Pfizer to meet the real people who dedicate their lives to finding cures for diseases. In doing so, Shook puts a face on these dedicated men and women, most of whom spend their entire careers working in their labs without ever having a new drug ending up in our medicine cabinet. After reading MIRACLE MEDICINES, my take on these individuals is that they are truly committed to humankind. They are hard-working, decent people who spend their lives to benefit others. As the author states, these are highly educated people, many who have medical degrees and Ph.Ds and could earn far more in private practice or working elsewhere. Why do they work for pharmaceutical companies? To paraphrase one chemist in the book, "I could have made more money working for a chemical company, but I wanted to work where I could do the most good for humankind."

The author does an excellent job in presenting an otherwise very complicated subject in a way that can be enjoyably read by all. This is a tribute to his writing skills. The book is very informative and interesting to read. I recommend that you buy it.

I expected to be enlightened by this book, but I never expected to enjoy it. I was in for a big surprise. Author Robert L. Shook's writing is always first rate. However, in this book he has accomplished three rather remarkable things. First, instead of simply presenting well-researched and well-organized information - which could have made for a dull read - he has brought the information to life, creating seven intriguing stories about the dedicated and talented people who embody the pharmaceutical industry. I'll offer one example. Over a relatively short period of time we have come to accept AIDS as a (tragic) feature of contemporary society. I was fascinated to read about how, when, and where AIDS actually began; how it spread in this country; how physicians eventually identified HIV; and how pharmaceutical companies rushed to develop tools to diagnose and treat it. And, by the way, I found the profiles of the pharmaceutical companies quite inspiring - great things really can come from rather humble beginnings. Second, Shook takes technical information and makes it simple and easy to understand. This is no small feat. Finally, Shook helps the reader understand - yes, even appreciate - the contributions of pharmaceutical companies. In recent years, people have come to regard "Big Pharma" as they do "Big Oil" - i.e., as companies that exploit consumers who have no choice but to buy their products. Shook helps us to see pharmaceutical companies in a far more sympathetic light. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read and wants to learn about the ever-changing world in which we live.

I just started reading this book. If you were wondering what supplements might help your cancer, and why, this is the one to get. I was always baffled by dosage, but it helps with that too. This book is very important due to the tremendous growth in both research and interest in natural compounds over the past several years. The author is able to explain the how and why of over three dozen compounds that have confirmed anti-cancer activity.

I loved this book. I've worked in oncology clinical trials for years. I picked up this book to review for a friend, and admit that I was initially skeptical. But it's a wonderful book, well researched, well thought out... I was really impressed. Made me remember that half of the stuff we put in patients today originally was discovered when the NCI screened natural compounds for anti-cancer properties. Let's hope that this reflects the future potential of cancer treatment.

This is simply an outstanding book. I loved it and think that it can help lots of people whose oncologists just don't get it. The subject matter is fairly technical for the layman, as it is written by a first-rate researcher in the field. I think that this book was written for people who are comforatable reading slightly technical material (e.g., the Scientific American crowd). The author's explanations are very detailed. It is one of the best basic references that I have on general cancer biology. In a few places, the author seems to assume that the reader has taken at least introductory or even organic chemistry. If you haven't taken chemistry, I would still buy it. It is packed with great information, some of it taken from the author's own research. Also, the literature references are very new and relevant to the subject matter. A few areas could have been explained a little more clearly (the explanation of drug synergy was not the book's strong point).

John Boik's Natural Compounds In Cancer Therapy is a meticulous, scholarly, comprehensive, invaluable review of the actions and potential clinical use of more than three dozens carefully selected natural compounds. Nearly 4,000 references are included as Boik comprehensively and systematically examines the actions, pharmacology, toxicology, and potential clinical use of natural compounds as anticancer agents in the biological processes involved in cancer progress. Also very highly recommended is Boik's earlier work, Cancer And Natural Medicine: A Textbook Of Basic Science And Clinical Research (0964828006, $...).

This book has helped my wife and her sister ....their Mom has been in the hospital for over 4 months...with emphysema,
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and a fungus in her lungs...this book helped us know that it is OK to let others help with her care..and for us not to be stressed out all the time. I love reading the stories of the aging..and how important it is to listen to them as well...but take care of yourself and your family too,so we all don't get burn out.

This book is a great resource for me as a first time caregiver. The author interviewed quite a number of seniors for this book to get their impressions and experience on care receiving and caregiving. I like the way Cheryl Kuba emphasizes that we need to respect our seniors and their wants and needs as much as possible. I would give this book to anyone who has no clue as to how to take care of an older declining senior.

Her stories reflect the true style of living, aging, caring and where to seek help for the parents and caregivers as well. We all have to partake as caregivers during our lifetime, in one way or another. It is written...

If, 18 years ago, I had been able to find the practical, care receiver information Navigating the Journey of Aging Parents provides we could have enjoyed my mother's last years. Instead we battled. Cheryl Kuba presents not only the what but also the why and how of humane and loving caregiving.
The book is organized as the need for caregiving progresses. There is a beginnning and an end. The problems and fears are explained from the seniors' points of view. The caregiver responses, action items and solutions are practical and to the point. Her professional training shines through the definitions and terminology needed to communicate with seniors and with the government officials and facility administrators.
In each chapter she tells you what information you will find, gives you the information and laces it all with insights gained from her person-to-person interviews with real people caught in such a situation. The book is laid out to differentiate between the revelations from seniors and the practical information.
Ms. Kuba gently but firmly leads the reader through the agony of overcoming seniors' struggle to retain dignity and independence, caregiver's squeamishness in discussing bodily functions, finances, needs for safety and personal space. There are lists of what to do, where to seek help and information.
Above all, Navigating... is about coping. Ms. Kuba recognizes that love often gets lost in the stress of 24/7 caregiving. She provides strategies and resources for involving family, friends and community in pragmatic ways so the senior maintains contact and interaction with their real world.
My only regret for this book is that the extensive index does not distinguish between organizations/resources and subject matter.

Florence Nightingale greatly influenced modern nursing, to focus on the needs of the patient and establish nursing as a profession requiring assessment skills as well as caring presence. This brief, well-written & clearly understandable book is a must for the personal library of any nurse or nursing student. It is amazing to realize how advanced Nightingale's thinking was in her era; her lessons remain essential today and provide a basis for understanding why we do the things we do. A great read for anyone interested in nursing!

A book for true Nightingales! I enjoyed this book a great deal, some parts had me laughing out loud. It is an excellent gift book for nurses!

This makes a wonderful gift for a nursing student who is graduating, a nurse who is retiring or one who is being promoted. It is fascinating reading from a historical aspect will be relevant until the end of time.

Nursing is a vocation; not "just a job." Miss Nightingale knew this, and this book reflects this philosophy. Nursing-schools, many years ago, designed the curriculum--and educated the aspiring nurses--with this in mind. Sadly, many present-day nurses (and nursing-schools) have lost this ideal...and the state of affairs in nursing bears this out.

If you're seriously considering nursing--or are a nurse who is "burned out," read this book. It will enlighten and edify you.

I don't even know how to begin to say how much I enjoyed this book. How does one describe Inny, who seems to be just evil, and sometimes she really is. But why? Maybe she is the way she is because of the way life has treated her. Things that happened that she never told her family. I found myself crying for her & wishing that her family could understand why she did the things that she did & why she acted towards people in such a detestible way. Just read this book.

This book illuminates the life of someone who seems evil for evil's sake. That's at first glance. While no excuses are offered by the author or the character for the deeds done, layer after layer of this mean-spirited woman are removed until we see into the dark depths of her, and learn what she harbors there. Told in three points of view, the first two take us to the edge of the precipice while the third plunges us headlong into the hard facts of life. Skillfully handled by Mrs. Mitchell, the characters live on the page and in our minds long after the last page is turned. Aunt Inny is a character worth getting to know, and one to be reckoned with. I look forward to other works by this new author.

My dad saw in the newspaper that a teacher from Wellborn had written a book and immediately ordered it. I was so excited when I found out Mrs Mitchell (one of my favorite teachers) had written it.
It is a Great Book and noone deserves praise more that Ruth Mitchell. She took time with us in High School and I'm sure most would agree that she is a favorite among all of her past students.
Thank you Mrs Mitchell for everything you did for all of us and for writing such a great book!

this book was one of the best that i have ever read. i'm from anniston, alabama. reading the book and picturing in my mind where things took place. i really enjoyed reading the book. Mrs. Mitchell was my high school english teacher. she was a very excellent teacher and she is an excellent writer. Hope she'll write more.

Ruth Gunter Mitchell is genius in her storytelling. This is a book you'll not want to put down. Aunt Inny, the main character, is a complicated soul, indeed. I dare say she may remind us of someone we've each known who confused, dismayed and disappointed us. Yet, despite their serious shortcomings, we loved them, always hoping to understand what makes them act the way they do. This is a book you'll find yourself thinking about long after you've put it down. Count Ruth Gunter Mitchell among the South's finest writers!
