It has been rare that I've been so moved, so quickened by such a simple message. Perhaps I have been overcomplicating my life for 50 years! This simple volume, unabashedly written by two sisters, has literally caused me to rethink how I relate to God! Who would have thought. I have been a psychotherapist for 20 years, and a Christian for 40. I found it in my mailbox (I swear I don't remember having ordered it--and I order a LOT of books through Amazon). I read it in one sitting and immediately put into practice what was suggested...namely, ask, believe, wait, be thankful. The benefits came roaring in! Astounding! I have given several copies to friends and family with their feedback echoing similar results. They have then passed on more copies. How could I have missed this beautiful, inspiring, simple message throughout so much of my life? These brilliant angels--messengers of God-- are simply waiting for us. Join them. It will undoubtedly change your life as well. Utterly and completely recommended.

I could see and speak to angels before this book- my fortay. I loved them and still do. Everything happens for a reason. So, one day my best gf's mom was hosting a seminar on this book and invited me- several times. My parents too. I thought arragantly "naw, i can already speak to them, i don't need this class!" than my gaurdian and my other gf's gaurdian Caleb nugded me to read it. So i stopped being a little pest and read it. Very very wonderful. Understandable and opening. After reading this, its eaiser to sometimes speak with them and truly a help in my life even more than before.

This is a wonderful read for anyone who wants to live a Biblical life, but just can't seem to get over the hurts of abuse and betrayal. Joyce Meyer writes in her straight forward yet compassionate transparency. In this book, she takes the reader on a hope filled, "get from there to here" journey. I wish I had read this book a long time ago.

My grandfather sent this book to me and I confess that when I first saw it, I wasn't sure it was anything I wanted to read. Emotional healing? What could *I* possibly need to be healed from? Denial is an amazing thing. Thankfully, I had nothing else to read at the moment and picked up this book. From page 1, I was captured by Meyer's ability to share her story, make light of her struggle, and give examples of God's amazing power to heal us from our wounds, whether we recognize them or not. This book took me through the whole scope of emotions. I found myself laughing, and alternately, weeping as I recognized myself in the pages and yes, even found God speaking to me through Meyer's testimony. I simply could not put it down. If you are a survivor of any type of abuse, or even if you're just trying to work on building mature, Christ-centered relationships, consider this book. You won't be sorry you did.

Having been a victim of abuse Joyce is able to speak to others who have been abused on their level, not just from observation or education. She doesn't just leave the reader in the place of accepting that they have things they need to work through, but she leads them through the same steps she took by God's hand to receive that healing. I have used this book to lead a women's study group and have been wonderfully blessed to witness the changes that have come out of their applying these truths to their lives.

Review Date: 2007-07-13
There is a reason why this book has such a high customer rating. I have never read such a well written and beautifully articulated story of horrendous abuse. I read ALOT of books on this subject. None can compare. It addresses the subject of incest by a father and an enabling mother. It speaks of her relationship with her parents well after the abuse has ended. Anyone who must, or choose, to stay in relationship with their abuser will relate to this. There is much to connect with in her story. Buy it quickly!

I bought this book with hesitancy due to what I thought would be wading through the horrors of family incest, however; Silverman writes with such beautiful prose she makes the subject remain heartwrenching, yet readable in one of those books that does not come along very often. Her account is horrific and not for the faint of heart, but the writing and her courage to to endure and survive the atrocities of her childhood give the reader faith in how strong the human spririt can truly be. An amazing story told by an amazing woman who is obviously also a very gifted writer.

Chicken soup for the cat and dog lovers soul is a wonderful book that warms my heart and gives me a happy feeling reading thru the stories and the love people feel for there pets. When I recently lost my beloved siamese cat it helped me to feel better about my "furry baby" passing over the rainbow bridge because I knew he had a wonderful life and he knew he was cherished. All the books in the chicken soup series are very uplifting and spirtual and make people smile, I highly recommend them.

I really enjoyed this book. The main reason I liked it is because it is all about cats and dogs, and I am a hardcore animal lover. Another reason I liked it is because the stories are not made up in someone's mind. These stories are real stories that real people lived through. The last reason I liked this book so much is because you don't have to read it like an ordinary book. You can read it like I did and just jump around to stories that sound good to you, instead of reading the book cover to cover.

The Healing Kind of Savior, Cat-like.

Review Date: 2006-06-11
In this volume, Mr. Canfield and crew have compiled a smorgasboard selection of short stories about pets who fortify us and make life bearable. Especially poignant to me was "the medicine cat" as I, too, had one named Tosca. She gave up the ghost a few months ago at the age of eighteen years, as I had no way to get to her when she needed support of the kind she gave to me several years ago. They recognize the special love and devotion of animals to bless our hearts and homes.

"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."

It is the physical acts of love to bring the gift of life as expressed in "The Healing Touch." I cried as I read "The Language of the Heart" about an unusual rabbit and his healing the hurt of a little girl who'd turned inward and no longer could talk. Something had died in that child which this loving rabbit cured. His innocence and trust had rekindled the same qualities in the child. The loving presence of an animal can heal where words have no effect. Alas, Roger Rabbit bit the tip off my little finger one day, which led me to the ER for a Saran-wrap bandage (to stop the bleeding -- a bandaid wouldn't work) and a tetanus shot. Needless to say, I found him another home.

"A small gesture -- the insistent tap of a cat's paw" about Jack, an adopted stray kitten (like Dante in Troy, Alabama), who grew into Ellen's savior. He woke her from a daydream of tragedy; Star woke me up with that same gesture over and over so that I would not strangle from Acid Reflux. Pets do love and care for their owners. This volume is one I will treasure for years to come. It is full of memories about pet owners' animals, not just cats and dogs.

This marvelous book, and the mysteries it explains, will resonate with the deepest stirrings and queries of your soul. It is one of the best, most enlightening books I have ever read. It addresses, answers and explains what your soul has always been seeking. It has been my great pleasure to have had Alan Arcieri as a guest on my radio show on many occasions. A gifted medium, Alan always succeeds in thrilling, as well as emotionally touching the audience. He imparts high teachings of metaphysics and spiritual wisdom in a nuts-and-bolts way that may be appreciated and used by anyone as a roadmap. The teachings in this book are presented in the most informative and easy-to-understand manner. It is truly destined to become a metaphysical classic.

Some Good Stuff, Some Crazy Stuff
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-21
I studied at Cornucopia, a "school" Ken Keyes Jr. founded, in June of 1978. Here's what's good about Ken's ideas. 1)He wants you to focus on your own thinking, your own demands and expectations, so that you can lead a happier life. He says, correctly, that it's very difficult to change events and situations to make them fit your models of how things should be, so why not try and change the way you think about things--smacks of Stoicism, right? But there's more. 2) He has this plan, a bunch of things to do, intended to help you demand less and enjoy more. He wants you to memorize some...aphorisms, to shout out new thoughts into a bucket which is placed over your head (he calls it consciousness focusing), and so on. Yet here's where he's crazy. 1) He tries to explain something called "unconditional love." Now the word "love" as understood by 99.99999% of the population means "an attraction to something perceived as good." Inherent in this definition are conditions. We love ice cream because its condition is good, great tasting. We do not love being boiled in a cauldron. So unconditional love renders the word meaningless. 2)He uses these abstractions ubiquitously, such as "I am freeing myself from security, sensation, and power addictions which..." Say what? "Awakening beings" and "us space" and "cosmic" and "inner light [or wisdom]" are everywhere. Ken's ideas are often solid; I wish that he had a far more straightforward way of communicating them. Yet all in all it's worth wading through the thorns to get to the berries. There's enough good stuff in here to qualify it as a good read.

I purchased this book first in the mid 80's while I was laid up after an injury. I was deeply impacted by it and the messages about the levels of consciousness. I have to admit that I have not yet finished it. I continue to work my way through the first 5 levels, over and over again. This book impacts my life in how I interact and whenever I find that I am in "pain" I recognize this, look to where I am stuck and accept myself. I was amazed to find this book cited in one of my Graduate school classes. Apparently Ken was a quadriplegia, nothing in the book talked about this, and these messages of acceptance are important to those who work to overcome the impact of a disability on their life. I have purchased and given away numerous copies of this book. A must read!!

This is a pragmatic book. I first got this book back in the 70s. I didn't realize what a treasure this book is.

This book will simply teach you how to be successful and happy always. Successful as in let go of the emotional junk that keeps you held back, keeps you sleepy, and all that. Sounds hokey? Well, that's why I didn't read it for about 20 to 30 years. I skimmed it, saw one line in there which sounded "hokey" and didn't read it. However, I kept it; a feeling told me to keep it. Now that I have had major things happen in my life, new career, new kid, and new challenges, this book came to the rescue.

Let's be clear. Had I read this book 30 years ago, I would have saved myself a lifetime of different moments of pain and suffering.

I suggest you read it all the way through as fast as possible, reread it and apply what you learn while reading it the second time.

This book by Mattieu Ricard really breaks down happiness. He differentiates between pleasure and happiness and how happiness is something that must be cultivated and practiced. Mattieu Ricard also gives a handful of in depth meditation exercises at the end of a few chapters. And he points out that you don't have to be a Buddhist monk to achieve enlightenment, but everyone can reach a better plateau of happiness.

I've got to admit that the writing is so deep that sometimes I have to only read a couple of pages and then take a break. But don't let that deter you. Within 1 or 2 chapters I was feeling happier than I think I ever have. And this from a mildly chronically depressed person.

It does rely heavily on Buddhism but it IS a Buddhist writing it )). For the ultra religious, don't worry. He does not shove his beliefs down your throat. It is just his examples are from his life so that are flavored that way.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested i attaining happiness.

Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill

This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of happiness. A real treasure.
Happiness is not a mystery but a possible goal for anyone who seriously wants to become a happier and better person. If you love science, literature and culture, Matthieu Ricard is the right guru for you.
A must read for everyone who loved his book "The Monk and the Philosopher".
A book you won't ever part with for you'll want to read in it again and again.

Change yourself for the better

This book has been written by the world's happiest person. Neuroscientists have conducted various tests on thousands of people including the author and have come to the conclusion based on scientific proof. It is therefore necessary to keep that piece of information at the back of your mind when you read the book.

Every word in the book comes out loud and clear as having been created by a truly happy and contented person.

Simply by reading the book and following some of the exercises that the author suggests, you can transform yourself from a tense and neurotic being into a joyful, stress free person.

Though the author is a Buddhist monk, this book is not about Buddhism nor does it attempt to convert one to that religion. This is a practical, down to earth method to learn to be happy.

The Need for Practice

Review Date: 2008-03-30
This is just a footnote to the other reviews, especially the one that wants more of the "how" to implement the author's suggestions.
Ricard is one of the finest students of one of the finest teachers of the Tibetan tradition as is, for example, the very popular author Pema Chödrön.
Chödrön's books and "Happiness" by Ricard share the same characteristic: they make great inspirational reading BUT in the absence of a regular meditative discipline they remain only that.
There is a great abundance of excellent books (which by the way are not enough on their own), and there are even quite a lot of excellent teachers, who can guide one with regard to that regular practice.
Of course what "practice" is is something that must be investigated by you yourself. The many exercises found throughout Ricard's book, if assiduously undertaken, are material enough for a thorough familiarization with practice as I understand it.
I wish you the very best in your quest,
Richard Wrigley.

Now there falls into my hands Kathleen Adams' Journal to the Self that distills the best of the rest and introduces exciting new ways to use the personal journal. As they say on Broadway, "A Tour de Force". Bravo!

Journaling to the self is an amazing book. I'd recommend it to ANYONE who is a journaler or would like to start journaling. There were so many techniques I could barely contain my pen. If you want to spice up your writing, or want to dig deeper into yourself, or find a creative outlet for your life, read this book! It's amazing. My only complaint would be there there are so many techniques that I wanted to try that I will have to re-read this book, happily, over and over again to get to them all!

some great techniques for journaling. I tried most of them and liked them. They did not have some profound impact on my life, but it gave journaling a little more dimension and made it intresting. If you do get this book remmeber that it has ALOT of fluff( useless info); flip through the pages, get the gist of the techniques and go for it. It took me about an hour to read this way. It very boring if u read every page

Jacks book inspired me to new levels to be a "People First Purpose Partner". Months after reading the book I find myself applying the principles of the "People Pyramid" and seeking to value people. Easy to read and a catchy story line this book will bless those who read it-especially those who apply the principles in everyday life.

People First is an excellent book for any church, company, or organization. It is about focusing not so much on buisness and numbers but people and their needs. People first has definantly helped me in my ministry.

Ever wonder how a few elite companies get that "magic touch". You know the one where the customers, the employees and even the vendors that server the company just light up when you mention the organization. Well there is a good chance that the company had the privilege of meeting Jack Lannom and the competitive advantage of deploying the empowering management style of "People First". If you are serious about gaining, or keeping your competitive edge while developing leadership though out your entire enterprise then People First is a MUST READ! - Mark Hughes
