As a lay person who suffers from an avoidant personality, along with some overlapt into areas like OCD I find this book a good read as I struggle to better understand and work aloside my therapist to continue to make progress in my batter to overcome long term self imposed walls. My therapist knows I read such refernces she had kidded me about my having enough knowledge to teach a graduate level class on personality disorders. She was the one who first got me connected with the writings of Millon. I must say of all of Millon's works I have read so far this one seems to be written at a level that is easier for the lay person or perhaps for therapist that come from outside the clinical psychology background to get a good feel for many of the find points of the disorders that can sometimes get lost in his other works if you don't have a good strong background going in. The individual cases are intereesting. While none of the sample avoidant cases really hit home with me as somone who sufferns from an avoidant personality I could still see where the approach being used was coming from and might work well for some others. Over the years prior to treatment I managed to make a lot of progress in numerous areas but still am working nove for about 18 months with my therpist to continue to grow and experience things that at 54 I though I would most likley never experience.

Finally a book that talks about treatment of the individual within the context of a diagnosis. This is a worthwhile book for both the seasoned clinician and the student craving more knowledge and understanding.

This book is the best and most comprehensive book on the subject of brain physiology and the disorders that we all have to deal with one way or another. The book is both easy to read and scholarly, the reference section is exhaustive.

At last a physiological psychology textbook that focuses on clinical disorders! I have searched for years for a book such as this one that has great images of the brain, is written in an understandable fashion, and devotes numerous chapters to disorders such as schizophrenia, addiction, and autism. It seems that most physiological psychology textbooks include only one chapter on clinical problems. The first 3 or so chapters cover the basics of neuroanatomy and cellular function and are fantastic. Whew, I am glad this book came along. Thanks Dr. Wyandt.

Pieces of A Puzzle: The Link Between Eating Disorders and ADD has made a significant difference in my life. Dr. Dukarm is able to translate her knowledge and recommendations into a context that is easy to understand and apply. The content of this book is extremely beneficial, especially for those struggling with Bulimia or Binge Eating Disorder. After reading this book I contacted Dr. Dukarm, she was able to provide a consult. Her recommendations change my life for the better.

A wonderful, easy reading book that gives you all the important information you need if dealing with a child with ADD, an eating disorder, or both. The question and answer layout makes it easy to find information quickly. I highly recommend it. I have a child with ADD (inattentive type) and she dabbles with eating issues. Thanks for this fabulous book.

The Classic Pilates Book

Review Date: 2005-04-12
This is the classic book on Pilates matwork and Pilates principles. The original, hard-backed edition has been long out-of-print and very expensive on the used book market, but well worth the money. How exciting to find it republished!

Any Pilates student or instructor will be delighted to add this most informative and useful manual to their bookshelf. It is clear, very well written, beautifully illustrated, and comprehensive. As much as I like Brooke Siler and Alycea Ungaro's books, I find myself using this book more often.

The best pilates book out there. This book was written before all of the others and it is still the best. Pilates has become very popular and that is a good thing. It is an excellent mind/body method that everyone should learn. However, too many people have taken advantage of its popularity to earn money. There are now hundreds of dvds and pilates books available, yet only a few are any good. Some people have taken tiny little fractions of the method and made dvds out of them. There are some good products - Ungaro's and Siler's books are good and the Classical Pilates dvds are excellent. This book is well written, easy to follow, beautifully photographed and aims to inform and teach this wonderful method to the public. It is not just another attempt to jump on the pilates bandwagon.

Davies and Neil have conspired to bring together a range of professionals in the field of helping Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual clients grow and heal in a queeer positive space.

This book is for all professional helpers who have clients who do not conform to the heterosexual mold and need to be suported in their life choices/circumstances. As opposed to a number of books proporting to be for therapists working with a similar client base, Pink Therapy offers no cures or therapies for the 'affliction' of non-heterosexuality, but recognises the wonder and value of it and offers therapists and clients an understanding of the value of recognising this and building on that value to move forward in life.

A must read for all therapists & counsellors, in particular Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual therapists & counsellors and those with Bisexual, Gay or Lesbian clients.

Read if you've ever said, "love the sinner; hate the sin"

... I am a straight graduate student in psychology who has spent the last 8 months as a volunteer with a local gay telephone switchboard. I read this book as background for a paper I am writing that attempts to defend adoption by gay/lesbian parents. It covers all the basics - homophobia and its internalization, the coming out process, GLBT relationships, parenting, aging, etc. Each is addressed as a blend of theory with case studies so that the reading is smooth, entertaining and interesting. It is written from a British perspective with an occasional colloquialism, and the appendices are not useful here in the States.

But I am so glad that I read this book. My neurology class convinced me that the etiology of homosexuality is biological. Spong convinced me that the moral condemnation of homosexuality is wrong in "Living in Sin." "Pink Therapy" helped me to feel the pain of those society has rejected, to understand how hard it must be to overcome the temptation toward self-loathing such rejection breeds, and to respect the courage of those who have dared to be what they were made.

In my evangelical past it was often said that we should "love the sinner while hating the sin." I now understand what was wrong with this statement. By presuming to judge my gay brother or my lesbian sister, I am wounding them. With God's help I will do so no longer.

Read this book with an open heart and mind. You might learn more than you ever thought you could.

This book is excellent. I especially enjoyed the therapeutic humor chapter by Dr. Sultanoff. There are many helpful and insightful tips for therapists who want to use humor in the practice of psychotherapy with adults.

Another Classic!

Charles Schaefer has done it again!
Play Therapy with Adults is destined to become a classic, and be used by therapists starting in graduate school, and continuing to be read for many, many years. The depth of this book is incredible; featuring many techniques for play therapy with adults. It covers dramatic role play, improvisational play with couples, the use of humor in therapy, sandplay, doll play, hypno-play, etc. Clients presenting with depression, illness, dementia, and dissociative disorders are among the adults who benefit from play therapy. As someone who has been doing play therapy for over 25 years, I really appreciate this book.
Well done!

As a licensed massage therapist, this book has given me an entirely new set of skills in my professional practice. I recommend it to anyone who not only wants to heal, but also wants to learn about themselves and how they interact with the world.

A must for natural healers.

Dr. Stone published these books back in the '50s, but his insights are still ahead of their time. His profound eclectic understanding of the human energy fields and their application in healing are holistic, indepth and dynamic.

Reading The Complete Collected Works is a lifelong labor of love. After almost 25 years I am still reading and researching the principles that Dr. Stone intertwines in these volumnes.

The illustrations and charts would be worth the price of the book by themselves. Each one can be studied like a tarot card. They will evoke from you nonconscious responses which will then translate into your healing work.

If you are looking for a light read; forget it. The Complete Works are not for bedtime reading. Have your highlighter and note cards handy.

Enjoy

Not what I expected - For emotionally or developmentally challenged

I was hoping for a book dealing with challenging behavior in a general ed setting. This book is focused on inclusion for those with emotional or developmental disabilities. I returned the book to Amazon for a refund. I'm sure it's a fine book, so I gave it 5 stars to match the other reviewer. It just wasn't the book I needed.

The title of this book does not convey the breadth of topics covered relevant to children of many different ages, the complete description and explanation of a wide variety of behavioral interventions along with expected results. Also good list of other sources of scholarly articles. One slight critique would be that a greater use of footnotes might have made the text a bit more user friendly.

Whether it is for a birthday, graduation, Christmas, or Mother's/Father's Day, this book is a terrific idea for a gift. I was given the book as a gift by a friend after we shared a mutually devastating experience. Not only did it lift my spirits as I read through it, but I keep it as a reference (I am a writer) to remember that things are always going to get better, no matter how they may seem right now. A wonderful idea! A wonderful book!
