A valuable addition to the clinician's library

This book uses detailed case material to illustrate the various concerns experienced by patients who are dealing with infertility. It provides clear descriptions of the specific interventions that address many of these patient concerns. Deveraux and Hammerman have presented material in such a way that therapists are able to select appropriate specific interventions so that therapy can be individualized to address the concerns of a particular patient or couple. Infertility and Identity also describes effective interventions for patients who may still be struggling with the issue of infertility years after a successful pregnancy or adoption. This book is especially relevant at a time when financial constraints often necessitate therapy to be focused and time-limited. This book will be an excellent resource for clinicians who are helping patients deal with the many issues related to infertility.

An excellent resource on infertility.

This is a much-needed resource for a major problem area for many couples. Deveraux and Hammerman have written an informed and useful book about a seldom-addressed problem. Of particular interest are their challenges to traditional thinking. As a psychologist often working with clients with infertility problems I found their concepts challenging and useful, full of practical information. Although directed to the professional this book is quite readable and down-to-earth, and will be as valuable resource for individuals and couples struggling with this problem. Highly recommended. Every time I pick up a Yalom book I ask myself why I have waited so long to read another one. His books are a pleasure to read and speak to people on all levels of experience and expertise. The title of this book says it all and is the perfect book for someone who will be working in an inpatient setting. This is a must-read for all professionals working with this population and speaks to the challenges and frustrations of this environment.

Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

It's THE book !

I got this book as part of my counseling masters course (MFT) and I must say IT IS THE BOOK for therapist, business people or ANYONE who wants to improve how they communicate with others. My husband sometimes refers to it when he comes by friends who need help in the peoples skills (shy types). Even the most experienced communicator can learn new things! I was AMAZED by the examples, conceptualizations and just the wealth of information.

Everyone should know these skills!

This book should be required reading for everyone, regardless of field or relationship status. If you encounter a friend, relative, or stranger with something on their mind, this book shows you the steps you can take to help that person find the solutions to their own problems, a skill we all have within us. I use the skills in this book as a psychology student, a parent, and someone in long-term relationships with family, friends, and loved ones. If you can't afford the new copy, find an old one. This book will improve how you connect with others tremendously!

This is an excellent book that outlines the infant to caregiver bond in human development. Dr. Stern challenges the traditional developmental sequence and the erroneous views that certain fundamental attachment patterns are confined to infancy alone. This is a great book that understands how scaffolding works in establishing patterns of relationship that can last a lifetime. The fundamental basics that make our human bonds to one another pleasurable and fulfilling are rooted in the establishment of secure attachments, trust and the creation of balance in human giving and receiving. He outlines what can go 'right' and what can go 'wrong' in these early bonds. His focus on loving and attuned presence, reading cues of overstimulation, or understimulation, captures the essence and joy that is both given and received when caretaking is done well or as has been described elsewhere, is 'good enough'. A great read and guide also for parents and clinicians, a great step in helping to build empathy and awareness about this critical period in human development. Highly recommended.

Good Choice

Dr. Stern did an excellent job in describing human development that is empirically based. What has resulted is a questioning of Dr. Margaret Mahler's 1st and 2nd stages of development. Though Dr. Mahler's work is superb, her theory is derived from observation, whereas Dr. Stern utilized computer technology to research similar material consequently presenting a major contribution to the literature. Finally, his writing style is easy to read that all readers can benefit from, especially those who have or work with children. I recommend reading this book.

This is the third book from Brookes publishing that I have used--the others are Road to the Code and Road to Reading. Like the others, this book provides primary teachers in grades K - 3 with lessons to use in small group targeted instruction in the five components. I especailly like this text because of the word lists which make it easy to implement the lessons to meet the needs of struggling readers. I would highly recommend this book.

Excellent intro. to the fine art of counseling.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-22
As a counseling major in grad school, I have had the opportunity to examine and peruse a couple of texts that purport to teach the reader the fine art of counseling and intentional interviewing. This book is by far the best I have come across and here is why.

First off, it is logically structured. The authors start out with a very sound introduction to the craft, and metting the client for the first time. From this point the book gradually and systematically introduces the various and sundry microskills and techniques. But what impressed me about this is that along with introducing the microskills and giving examples, the authors provide in-depth process commentary on when, where, how, and why you could use a particular technique.

Beginning students need to be impressed with the fact that interviewing must be intentional. There should be a rhyme and reason, a method to your madness (no pun intended), and this book does an excellent job at getting the student started on the right track. Too many students come into beginning interviewing classes with preconceived ideas; you can tell they have been watching too much television!

This book is definately a keeper!

** A very practical text for beginning interviewing students

I used this book as the primary text in my "InterviewingSkills & Techniques" course at Bristol Community College inFall River, MA. It was very well-received by my students, who commented on its excellent format and in-depth, but easily understood, clinical examples.

An added "bonus" in the book was the authors' efforts at diversity, both in the type of clients presented and the backgrounds of the therapists.

Psychotic, Neurotic and Individuating Families
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-21
What you may have long suspected, the research shows to be true: A good 70% of families in America are what is now popularly known as "dysfunctional" or worse; Intimate Worlds should be required reading for . . . . anyone in a family, that fundamental blueprint for life and society, for better or worse. Scarf poignantly shows how most of us could use a revised or entirely new blueprint to authentically thrive in life and pass healthy boundaries and life and relationship skills on to emotionally stable children. Psychoanalytically and sweetly eloquent, the dustcover flap (somewhat paraphrased below) says it well. A highly recommended landmark work.

~~ Scarf explores the many factors that go into the formation and functioning of a family, showing us the ways in which families actually operate, and how family life can be improved. She combines clear analysis with unforgettable stories about real families to expose the core issues that every family must deal with: power and how to manage it; intimacy and how to achieve it; conflict and how to resolve it; individuality and how to become wholly oneself while retaining a sense of belonging.

She outlines the five structural blueprints that characterize most families' patterns of being and relating, taking us inside intimate family worlds at each of these five levels of health and development [as described by the superb Beavers Systems Model Scale]:

A destructive dysfunctional family, typified by lies, secrets, chaos, doublespeak, confusion and powerlessness.

A borderline family, where minimum order over chaos is maintained by a petty tyrant.

A midrange family [60% of families], where life is somewhat productive yet "close, loyal" members are controlled from within by an internalized guilt-producing abuser holding members prisoner inside "a good family" and anyone else "different and bad" and "threatening" outside of it.

An adequately productive but ultimately enmeshed midrange family.

An optimal family, where flexibility and reality-based coherence flow in honest, individuating balance for all deeply authentic, highly individual and independent yet authentically intimate unique members -- who take great joy and delight in each other's unique personalities and achievements, glasses half full not half empty.

Changing unproductive and destructive patterns is the goal of the illuminating insights and exercises Scarf presents. ~~

Ms. Scarf presented various case studies of families in various orders of emotional disarray and distress, and provides solutions to patterns that develop in families. Her categories are helpful and she makes us rethink our behavior in the family setting- how are we hurting the ones we love?
