A Glimpse into Asperger Land

The author describes so accurately the behavior of the parent with as-yet undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome. I was amazed to read in this book that if a parent seems uncooperative or pretending to be stupid, etc. that one should consider that the parent is an individual with an undiagnosed pervasive developmental disorder. She gives lots of practical advice that develops from knowing the individual rather than using a one-size fits all theory. She manages to go beyond the usual explanations of behaviors to give to the normals(those without AS) an idea of what is going on in the mind of those with AS. She also gives a very accurate description of the problems that people at the higher end of the spectrum experience. She seems to know that "milder" forms of autism do not automatically equate with much "milder" difficulties; they are just a different kind of difficulty. This book has been the most positive book I have read about being the parent with high-functioning autism or AS. She did not criticize those parents' weaknesses; instead she advises ways the carers could support the whole family. I would highly recommend this book for any parent that is on the spectrum somewhere and has a child that is on the spectrum also. Then, lend it to the professional(s) who you and your child will be dealing with to help you.

Really smashing. State-of-the-art, with all the latest useful research, but jargon-free and reader-friendly. Full of indispensable practical tips and sensible advice on controversial issues such as inclusion and "miracle cures". If you're just starting to find out about autism, this would be a great place to start, but people who are already well-read will still find a great deal of new information.

Dealing with Children's Stress

Review Date: 2005-03-24
This book talks about children coping with daily life, coping with major trauma, and they talked about the gender as in social relationship based on differences between the sexes. I have learned that children live in a unique culture, that children if given a chance, they can already articulate the joys as in playing of their daily life. The stress measurement in children is that they rank according to the development of the taxonomies of stressors derived from children's interviews, school class discussion, or sentence completion. With the children's coping with stress, behavior problems, and coping with daily life as the child begins to grow up, families are going to have to deal with all of these problems.

A MUST READ FOR ALL PARENTS!

"Children's Stress and Coping" is a masterfully instructive tool to increase parents' awareness of common childhood stressors as well as provide essential coping patterns which may be applied for daily, successful parenting.

"You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you." ~ James Lane Allen

Karen Gedig Burnett is the author of four children's books that teach life skills. In "Choose Your Life" she now focuses on problems teens and adults face on a daily basis.

Making life easier is something we all can appreciate and this book is filled with tips on how you can find the most positive view of problems you are facing. This book will help you understand your relationship with co-workers, family and friends. It is written in a conversational style and the illustrations make the book a fun read. Some of the main topics include: handling pressure from external and internal sources, how to say NO and mean it, adjusting the messages you play in your head and making the best decisions to keep your power.

"Will your life be full of peace or turmoil?
Will you respect yourself and others, or will you be critical and judgmental?
Will you live with love and appreciations or turn towards anger, resentment, jealousy, and hate?
Will your thoughts and actions lead towards a sensed of purpose and feelings of success?" ~ pg. 259

Each chapter begins with inspirational quotes and there are quotes sprinkled throughout the chapters. This book is helpful if you keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Karen Gedig Burnett shows you how to handle negative emotions like anger. She also explains why it is a bad idea to waste your time and energy on what you can't control. There is a helpful section on meditation and tips for releasing negative emotions.

"Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes." ~ Jack Handey

This is one of the most succinct books on the subject of Mindy-Body. Ian captures many of the structures for the ongoing discoveries in the emerging science of psychoneuroimmunology. My students have found his presentation clear and well documented. I hope he will do an update.

Book for 21st Century

This is the best book I've come across in the field of Behavioral Medicine. It's way ahead of time. Dr. Wickramasekara expresses his clinical and research experience very boldly without any fear of medical establishments which seem to profess "pills" and "surgery" for pure economic reasons. He logically establishes the superiority of "skills" over "pills". It's a fascinating scientific book on mind-body medicine. I think people should be open-minded to read this book. It's a book that would lead us to the 21st century and help us to evolve. A must read for any Psychologist or any layman interested in self-examination of life.

This is a book written in easy to understand terms, that takes away much of the fear-out-of-ignorance associated with mental illness. It has the potential of taking the reader from a state of ignorance to the level of being able to take a first crack at diagnosis.

Coming Home To Your Body: Five Stars!

This is a beautifully, compassionately written little book on learning to honor your body, respect your needs, and take care of yourself. Berry teaches self-nurturance in one of the best ways that it can be fully experienced: on a moment-to-moment, daily basis. She encourages readers to take good care of their bodies through regular physicals, nutrition, exercise, massage, hot baths, and more. Included are delightfully sensual and joyous ideas for self-nurturance, and many little quizzes to see where you are in the process of self-nurturance. Extremely valuable for those who have become disconnected from their bodies, as well as for women who have experienced childhood trauma. A wonderful gift for a close friend or a sister. Most of all--for yourself! Highly recommended.

Another great book by Olga Bogdashina. My only warning is that you could find it a bit heavy going, but only because it is fantastically comprehensive. This is not just a book about communication issues in Autism... it is a book about language, learning, intelligence, and culture. It is open minded and thoughtful throughout, repeatedly emphasising the two way nature of communication and not just focusing on how to make autistic people do all the work like so many books do. The book is in three parts, the first looking mainly at theories of language and intelligence, the second at language characteristics, learning styles and development in autism, and the third and final part examines strategies to enhance communication. This is not a handbook that can teach someone how to communicate better, but what it is is a thorough guide to understanding what the communication issues of autistic people are.

If you are a beginning or experienced therapist, you won't find a better wake up and reminder call to client and therapist care than Jeffrey Kottler provides. Easily readable, refreshingly honest, this book offers experienced insights into therapist/client interaction which are liberating to say the least. Not only did I benefit greatly from reading this book, but best of all, so did my difficult clients.

A fresh perspective.

Jeffrey Kottler's emphasis is on preventing treatment from remaining superficial. His book adds an important dimension to the literature. It describes a special kind of respect for the patient and the latent meanings of the patient's manifest utterances, and it stresses the use of the transference as a prime tool in deepening the treatment. The book is especially welcome as a balance to the proliferation of therapies that overlook the unconscious.
