--Shoshana Bennett, PhD, former president of Postpartum Support International
A Must-Have for All PPD Providers!Review Date: 2008-08-06
Although the availability of PPD self-help books and moving personal accounts continues to expand, books that address issues crucial to healthcare professionals who treat postpartum women has been lacking. Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, a pioneer for support and legislation within the postpartum depression community for some time, and Alexis Menken, PhD, another great PPD authority, provide a solid foundation for a book that fills this critical gap in the literature. Together, with the most respected and expert voices in the PPD community, they have succeeded in creating a must-have resource for any healthcare practitioner who works with pregnant and postpartum women. Those of us who work in this field are eternally grateful to Susan Dowd Stone's dedication and hard work which has paid off in this indispensable resource!

A Wonderful Book.Review Date: 2007-02-13
One might have expected a book on psychiatric epidemiology to be organized around disorders. Instead, this one has major sections devoted to risk factors, cohort designs, case-control designs, issues in biological psychiatry, data analysis, genetic epidemiology and causality. The examples, however, are psychiatric.
This text represents a new standard for psychiatric epidemiology. But it could equally well serve as a intermediate text in general epidemiology.
First-Rate Psychiatric Epidemiology Text Found: 'Searching for the Causes of Mental Disorders'Review Date: 2006-11-07
'Psychiatric Epidemiology' is a first-rate text. The authors--Ezra Susser, Sharon Schwartz, Alfredo Morabia, and Evelyn Bromet--build upon a framework for causation, explicated in the final pages of the book, that capitalizes on the conceptual strengths of the counterfactual model Rothman and Greenland employ in Modern Epidemiology (Lippincott, 1998) and the validity scheme of Shadish, Cook, and Campbell (2002). They present epidemiologic concepts with narrative cohesion, drawing on an impressive array of examples that highlights both the diversity and creativity of psychiatric epidemiologists. The book is conceptually oriented and effectively conveys the elegance of epidemiologic thinking; it is a refreshing and much-welcomed addition to the pool of epidemiology texts dominated by quantitative and technical approaches, for students and seasoned epidemiologists alike.
Part I of the book provides an historical overview of psychiatric epidemiology, tracing its roots within the broader history of epidemiology, and bringing the reader into the current era. Parts II-V progress logically and lucidly across the terrain of study design; the authors efficiently present epidemiology's signature cohort and case-control designs and the related issues of confounding, attrition, misclassification, and choice of controls. Part VI is devoted to data analysis, rendered especially clear and accessible with the contributions of biotstatistician Melissa Begg. Likewise, Part VII, which engages genetic causes, the various study designs employed to study them, and new insights, is enriched greatly by geneticist Mary-Claire King. Finally, Part VIII comprises several chapters that address the need to think about causation as complex, multi-level, and dynamic; for considering the future of epidemiology, these chapters are particularly salient.
'Psychiatric Epidemiology' is an indispensable resource. It is remarkably clear and cogent throughout; at times, beautifully written. It is both highly informative and a pleasure to read. Indeed, from the sum of its eight parts, what emerges is a whole that is far greater.

Peak of a brilliant career?Review Date: 2003-09-10
I discovered Rossi in the early 1980's and took one of his "64 questions in search of a graduate student" as my master's thesis. Since then I have digested his work and watched, sometimes in amazement, as clients changed and as I changed. Rossi's view of the mind-body in therapy works and is workable.
I had the pleasure of seeing him in Texas this summer (2003) and was mesmerized (pardon the pun) by the obvious skill of a master therapist. Between his demo to our group and reading this book with a view to integrate it into my work, I have found a revitalizing of my therapy practice that has pulled me out of a 2-year slump... enough said.
Thanks Dr. Rossi.
A Sourcebook for Therapy in the 21st CenturyReview Date: 2004-01-28
In addition to these sections Dr. Rossi also shares some very clear and vivid descriptions of actual therapuetic work. In one section he gives an entire transcription of a therapy he did with a woman during a workshop. In another section he lists a series of therapeutic exercises that can be used to access each person's deeper capacities for self healing.
This latest book also places Dr. Rossi in the ranks of the great detectives. He has been systematically tracking down all of the current research relating experience to gene expression. He regularly scans the internet for all sources that may have new findings related to this subject. He asks us to remember that this is "work in progress." Investigators all over the world are unlocking how specific genes are "turned on" by different experiences. Dr. Rossi is the only person I know who is making an attempt to synthesize this information within in a larger psychological context.
Currently both our medical culture and our larger culture continues to propagate extremely primitive models of human development. According to one of the most popular we inherit certain "tendencies" or diseases that are expressed in a nervous system that is essentially fixed after birth. Thus, our best therapeutic efforts will be directed towards modifying the brains that have genetically predestined defects. With these assumptions pharmacology will be the main (often only) ingredient of help.
At the beginning of the book Dr Rossi points out that recent findings have overturned many of our old theories about how the nervous system is linked to experience. We now know that novelty, life-enriching experiences and physical exercise can activate neurogenesis. Such experiences can turn on gene expression within minutes throughout the body and brain. As a result, "every memory is a reframe." We can actually reconstruct ourselves from a genetic level on up when we are experiencing a healing environment.
Taken as a whole Dr. Rossi has written one of the great sourcebooks for healing to guide us into the 21st Century.

Understanding psychological and emotional abuseReview Date: 2001-03-06
This book provides one of the first comprehensive scientific treatments of an intrinsic topic in the area of domestic violence. O'Leary and Maiuro have compiled a series of cutting edge papers and commentaries on the assessment of various types of psychological and emotional abuse, the relationship of psychological abuse to physical abuse, and the impact of psychological abuse upon victims. Several new scales for reliably measuring such things as dominance, jealous control, denigration of self-esteem, interfering with work or school are included along with data that substantiates the validity of the tools. A form of victim manipulation called "Stockholm Syndrome" is also included in this volume, assisting the reader to understand why the victim continues to return to the perpetrator of psychological and emotional abuse. This resource is also filled with exceptionally current references for additional reading. This book is a good source for domestic abuse therapists, researchers, teachers, and sophisticated readers who want a state of the art reference book on the most toxic component of domestic abuse - psychological and emotional abuse. I would recommend it very highly.
