OMG, I love this book, though I'm just not a 5 star kinda person. It helps me get the essential info with clear and basically pleasing/non obtrusive design -- sort of Dummies guide with color. I am particularly pleased that he includes tapering schedules in weaning off meds and what to expect. Seems like a good book for boards, too. He is sort of wordy but it's forgivable because it's very useful and thorough info that we need to know, managing patients on these meds.

Viva Stephen Stahl!

This has been one the most beneficial resource for me. I've seen Christian counselors for many years. They have all been sensative and well meaning. But a listening ear, and a few bible verses were not enough. This book gives you practical tools and exercises to combine with the power of the Word. It is making a difference for me.

Intrigued by the positive reviews of what seemed like a pretty varied group of readers, I ordered this book. Never heard of the authors. Not a bestseller or hot title.

This book will change your life if you let it.
Written in a very down to earth, approachable and concise way, this book contains an incredibly effective and healthy intertwining of Psychology, Truth, and common sense. After coming out of many years of very difficult relational circumstances, I often find myself struggling with a general sense of anxiety, even though my life situation has drastically improved. This book shed light on the many anxiety-provoking misbeliefs I unconsciously speak to myself each and every day and the deep extent to which my mind is in desperate need of re-programming with truths that bring authentic peace. No doubt this 're-programming' will realistically be a lengthy process since it took many years to learn the anxious way of thinking. But for the first time in a very long time, I have strong hope for change since this book as given me a very practical path to changing these thoughts. I've read many great books in my life, but this little unknown title makes it into the self-help Top 5.

Before you believe that change is beyond your grasp, give this book a chance.

At first the authors' sef-help suggestions seem almost too simple to be effective; akin to Nancy Reagan's, "just say no...". But as I continued reading I began to see their point with greater clarity, and finally had to agree with them: I am a person of value who is loved and can love others. Neither they nor I need to try to measure up to any unrealistic expectations in order to be acceptable and to enjoy life.
The book is based on the core teaching of the Bible: even though we are hopelessly messed up from day one, God loves us, forgives us, and gives us the ability to become what we are meant to be. Because of this, no matter how full of resentment, emptinesss and hate we are, we can change and enjoy inner peace, free of guilt and self-condemnation.
I was surprised at how, in some of the case studies, the authors seemed to minimize people's anguish, telling them what they were experiencing was, "...not so terrible...". But eventually it began to make sense. It's a matter of getting a better perspective; correcting the negative 'can't see the forest for the trees' view so many of us don't even realize we have.
I recommend this book to anyone who really does want to get past the "gotta play the bad hand life has dealt me" mentality. Too many people have overcome horrible circumstances; the rest of us need to know that we can as well. This book helps us see how.

I have recommended this book to parents and they have found it helpful. They have not had a hard time understanding it or trying to implement some of the suggestions. The cost is reasonable for most parents. If you have attended trainings on anxiety and interventions to help, you probably have heard most of the techniques and suggestions. Is good aid to educate parents about anxiety, CBT, and worry and the brain.

This book has made me look at food and the other issues you may have that effect why and what we eat. I started looking at a broader array of foods that are out there, and started eliminating some of the really unhealthy items that I see I was consuming for emotional reason, not nutritional needs. It's a cook book with feelings.

A Real Gem

This is my favorite macrobiotic/whole foods cookbook. This is what I love about it:
-The easy-going no-guilt, listen to your body perspective
-All the suggestions for making healthier foods with similar textures, tastes and appearances as the less healthy more conventional foods
-The many charts, drawings, tables showing you how to diagnose what you need by the emotions you are feeling - ie do you need a cleansing meal or a calming one? Do you need to feel inspired or grounded? etc
-There is a variety of recipes
-Many recipes have suggestions for changing or adding things (which suits me just fine because I don't always follow recipes when I cook anyhow)

Overall, the book makes me feel good. It tells you to slow down, savor the food, pay attention to how it makes your body feel, understand the connection between emotions and weakness in your organs and also covers how to get sufficient iron, calcium etc on a non-dairy diet.

I highly recommend this book.

I wish this book had been available years ago. I have suffered from PTSD ever since I was 7 years old and witnessed a brutal murder. One of the murderers was a relative and he threatened to kill me and the rest of my family if I ever said a word to anyone. I was so traumatized I lost the ability to speak. That was just the first of a series of traumas in my life. If this book had been available when I was younger it would have helped me to avoid so much pain .... so many mistakes ...

I eventually got some excellent counseling and learned about many of the tools listed in this book. I wrote the story of my life and about all the destructive things I did to try and cope with my pain. It ends with my journey to wholeness and healing. Don't spend your life in grief and pain - there is a lot of help out there if you will only accept it.

This is an excellent overview of PTSD, including the things one needs to know about self-care and managing the disorder. It is an organic disturbance in the mind and the nervous system, and there are ways to live with it.

As the suicide rate for returning veterans continues to climb (and to be unreported by media), PTSD is going to continue to be a public health issue, as will its treatment. This is a clearly-written guide, more for the client than the practicioner.

Some people's lives are picture-perfect, filled with sunny days, starry nights and happy weekends. The good times just keep on coming. For post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) victims, things also go on forever. Over and over, they mentally relive their most traumatic experiences in a continuing nightmare. PTSD is insidious. First you are the victim of severe, unspeakable trauma. Then, like a ghost, the trauma comes back to haunt you. Many associate PTSD only with combat veterans. However, almost any severe, stressful event can cause PTSD, be it rape or assault, abuse, a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or an accident. PTSD is a deadly, serious problem that plagues its victims. Fortunately, it does not have to be a life sentence. Treatment is available and recovery is possible, as Glenn R. Schiraldi explains in this thorough sourcebook. In fact, he states firmly that PTSD is curable with the proper therapies. If you or someone you care about suffers from PTSD, getAbstract thinks this book could be useful, helpful and encouraging.

A Must-Read for Patients

Review Date: 2007-05-11
This month's long-awaited second edition recently hit the streets, and is well worth the wait. At more than 1,200 pages and with an impressive list of collaborators shedding light on all manner of matters melancholic and manic, the book represents a virtual Manhattan Project on mood disorders.

With our recovery riding on being as smart, if not smarter, than our treating professionals, it pays for patients to read what their clinicians are reading, especially a work of this magnitude. Don't let clinician-speak intimidate you. The authors went to great lengths to organize their subject matter into a meaningful and comprehensive whole, with clear transitions from one topic to the next. A few pages into the text, and one quickly becomes habituated to the polysyllables. Then it's clear sailing.

At $99, sales resistance is understandable. My two cents: You cannot afford NOT to have this book. Each day you struggle with this illness costs you money, already. The cost-benefit is a no-brainer. Stop paying your cable bill, if you have to, and make what could prove to be the best investment of your life.

This book is more important than the DSM and the ICD when it comes to Bipolar. It's mostly for professionals who have to deal with diagnosis and need to understand the illness. The writting style is overly accademic and cumbersome however it is the most useful and informative book around by a long shot. At around 1200 pages long, this is not a cover to cover quick read unless you have several months with nothing else to do.

Although a huge book along with a hefty price tag, this is probably the most up to date information on bipolar disorder (manic depression) available today. It offers a wealth of information that is usable to the clinician as well as the patient. In fact, I think this should be required reading for any clinician who deal with people with this condition.

I strongly urge the purchase of this book esp. for the consumer as self knowledge will be such an asset when communicating with your doctor. This book covers most everything from the most basic to the most complex information to date on this vexing condition. Though I am constantly searching the internet for the most up to date information on bipolar disease, I find the authors of this book to be the leading authorities presently.

First, a little personal background. It was a Monday in early May (10th to be exact) when it hit like a ton of bricks. When I say that I mean a TON OF BRICKS and it felt as if each and every brick was piled on my chest. I had no doubt whatsoever that I was about to die. At the time I was driving on a limited access toll road and the exits were few and far between. Somehow that afternoon I made it home. I tried to calm down but I was walking outside and I could not stop moving. It was absolutely horrible.

Our son had a little league baseball game at 7 p.m. which is why I came home early. As I backed out of the garage and started for the park I found myself turning toward the hospital instead. I presented with chest pains, sky high blood pressure, thought I was going nuts (it might have been too late for that - it might have already happened), was shaking all over, could not sit still and knew I was going to die. I was whisked past the emergency room and promptly deposited in a bed in the Coronary Care Unit of a major teaching hospital with a suspected heart attack.

For the next two days the staff ran tests, more tests and I think they tested the tests. A bucket of money later the Chief of Cardiology, who was also a friend, proclaimed from "on high" that I had not had a heart attack and he didn't have a clue about what happened. He was not alone in his non-diagnosis diagnosis.

Over the next nine years I saw 13 physicians and 2 psychologists with the end result being that I LOST nine years of my life as I became agoraphobic also. All they actually did for me was shove another Valium scrip into my pocket until I was at 60 mg. of Valium and ValRelease per day. It was like popping M & Ms for all the good it did. For five years, in my prime with our son's sports events and all, I could not leave our home. The most I could do was walk to the end of the driveway and get the newspaper.

When I finally found someone who could help me on July 20, 1991 it only required about 2 days of meds to get my *whole* life back.

Now, on to the review:

A little fast for the review notice from Amazon as this book is a course of action self-learning. All great knowledge stems from autodidactic personalities and David Carbonell definitely provides a wonderful process of self-learning. After just a few minutes with this tome you will be able to see where he is going. All you have to do is follow the bread crumbs to get home safely.

This should tell someone reading these reviews that this is not a "grab it, couldn't put it down" type of book (or manual, if you prefer that term). This is not a quick fix like a pill that lasts until its half-life depletes its efficacy. To complete the program you must work at it like you have never worked before. It's scary. It's challenging. It's a lifesaver.

The book does not have a path to a cure for panic disorder but you do not need to find a cure to get your life back. This program is really good.

While The National Institute of Mental Health says, "There is no cure for panic disorder" relief is something you can achieve if you decide to own this book. If you suffer from Panic Disorder, to any degree, you owe it to yourself to order this book as soon as practicable.

I have suffered with panic and anxiety for a long time, and have read and tried many self-help books along the way. I started this book yesterday, and read it cover to cover. I can already see the ways of my thinking about panic was flawed for years. This book is already helping see the light at the end of the panic "cycle." The exercises are all useful and humorous, and I never found myself getting bored or confused by the writing.

Please remember, as with any large task you undertake, you may get worse before you get better, but that's because you are facing it, and that takes a lot of courage. This book will help you see that and understand that it's okay to be who you are, and having an anxiety problem does not make you a flawed person.

The author used a lot of words but didn't seem to say a whole lot....while I'm with her on sugar being bad, she doesn't give many reasons as to how or why it's bad. I think it would have been helpful to have some of the statistics I have read in other books about the toll it takes on your health. Basically the book says to very gradually phase out sugar and give your kids lots of protein, which is another problem I have. It puts an unbalanced emphasis on protein needs. She recommends some foods that aren't healthy in the sake of getting protein in (is she aware of some of the health issues associated with too much protein?). Protein shouldn't be the focus, it should be healthy eating with no sugar. I was very disappointed overall with the whole thing and it was rather a waste of time reading it.

Amazing! Life changing!

This book has been a Godsend to us. My 13 year old daughter is a high performing athlete who has apparently been a sugar addict for many years without our knowing it. I wish I had figured this out years ago! Apparently, she is not only a sugar addict, but one step further: reactive hypoglycemic. Which means that during all her sporting events, pumping her with sports drinks is the exact opposite of what she needs. She caught on to the fact that she was feeling better and performing better within a week or two and is now quite conscious of of her need to eat protein when she has sugar, and is cutting back on the excess sugar, saving it for when she wants a treat. Thank you Kathleen!!!

A life-saver!

THIS BOOK IS GREAT! IF YOU HAVE A CHILD THAT IS HYPERACTIVE, IT IS MOST PROBABLY THE SUGAR! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND TRYING WHAT THIS BOOK SUGGESTS BEFORE GIVING ANY CHILD MEDICATION. MY DAUGHTER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD AND SHE IS ON THIS DIET NOW AND IS COMPLETELY FINE! MAJOR ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT....IT REALLY WAS THE SUGAR!

....HAPPY MOM

The program that Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons designed for children in her book Little Sugar Addicts is wonderful. The book describes the program is simple, plain language. Dr. DesMaisons has dedicated her life to helping people heal and her compassion, warmth and sensitivity comes out in her latest book, Little Sugar Addicts. I read this book and started doing the program with my kids and I have seem miraculous changes in them. It has been such a blessing. This book is very easy to read and the program is very easy to do. I highly recomend it to all parents.
