Review by Joel Yager, M.D.Review Date: 2002-05-22
Dr. Tom Holbrook's account of his own struggle with anorexia nervosa is a highlight of the book. This remarkably candid, self-revelatory story of an astute psychiatrist whose struggles permeated his medical and psychiatric training and subsequent practice is probably matchless in the annals of wounded healers.
The last sections concern recovery, dealing with topics from basic nutritional information designed to foster realistic dietary and meal planning for gaining (or losing) weight, to psychological, social and spiritual aspects of recovery.

Honesty is Rarely PopularReview Date: 2005-01-28
When an author puts out a book about gay life, one thing I pay attention to: Is this author being HONEST about what gay life style is like? I am proud and embarrassed to say that Orland Outland hits a lot of the misconceptions and frustrations of the gay dating game right on the head.
I think everyone has the romantically idealistic friend that needs to be smacked in the face with reality, or perhaps this book. They believe Mr. Right will find them. They believe no matter what they look like, Mr Right will see right through the fat and bad hair. They believe that one day, Juan will come up to them in a coffee house, and sweep them away to a fantastic tropical paradise, where cake has zero calories, sex with out a condom is ok, and love comes with out sacrifice.
I think every one of us WAS that person at one point in time. "The Principles" is written directly for that person.
Most of us reading "The Principles" will be nodding along with Mr Orland Outland's gentle scolding and witty pointers. Most of us will be laughing as Mr Outland discusses those around him and his own personal dating and sexual failures or mishaps. Then there will be a handful of readers who's for-head's will furrow in concentration, as they will be actually learning what it's like to play the game BY not playing any games.
Mr. Outland makes no attempt to hide that fact that this is the gay man's answer to the book for women "The Rules, Time Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr Right". Our author clearly states that these tactics might work for women, but they have no place in the competitive dating arena of men. I couldn't agree with him more.
Dating for the sake of dating. Sex for the sex of sex. Conversation for the sake of conversation. No strings. No tricks. No manipulations. (I promise, it's not complicated.)
I could see how this book would rub some people wrong. It's blunt. It's callous. It paints an ugly picture of gay dating...But what's important to me is that it is HONEST. Our culture and society has it's flaws. We cannot fault Mr. Outland for being honest about them.
Since it was written in 1998, most of the book is still rather relevant. A few bits here and there have already been deemed null and void by the advancement of time and technology. For instance, I've never had anyone online ask me, "Could you send me ur .GIF?" Right, let me get right on that.
Humerous, interesting, and educational, this book is perfect for the guy that needs to get a clue, or the guy that already has one. Either way, it's a solid digest on what dating life was like in the late `90's and what it IS like in the present time period.

Stoff writes from the perspective of one who personally treats prostate cancer patients in his medical practice. If this book has a weakness, it is that the reader is given so much information it may lead to some confusion.

Also note that in 2003 he lost his license to practice medicine in Arizona. Here is the quote, "With regard to Case No. 02-15, the executive director explained that the investigation was at complete. Assistant Attorney General, Harris explained that the Board may wish to consider a Letter of Concern or move forward with an administrative hearing based on the available information. President Shelton inquired about the status of Dr. Stoff's license following dismissal of the present case. Mr. Harris explained that the license would expire and Dr. Stoff would be unable to practice medicine in Arizona" (this is from the Jan 14, 2003 meeting of the Arizona Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners)

Unfortunately the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers last year to cease taking PC SPES because it contained undeclared prescription drug ingredients. The manufacturer of the product has since gone out of business.
Although THE PROSTATE MIRACLE includes much useful information, the apparent demise of PC SPES seems to greatly diminish the usefulness of this book.

I have been in the nutrition industry for 10 years now and am the Wellness Director and Nutriceutical Specialist for The Institute of Anti-Aging and Longevity, and this is the first time I have read a book that lists a balance of therapies, not a magic bullet, that will help the body heal itself if given the right nutrients and the elimination of stress and toxins. I am happy to see the the emphasis of PC SPES and AIDBCWE (or AiE10) as part of the therapy for prostate cancer. These little known substances have shown great promise in the treatment of cancer. We offer the AIDBCWE/AiE10 from Body Wise as mentioned in the book, and it definitely increases the activity of Natural Killer Cells designed to take out malignant cells.
The other unique thing about the book is that Dr. Stoff lists all the sources of where to get products and the laboratories he uses for diagnostics. This is a valuable asset.
My favorite Chapters are 6 and 7 because it relates to how the body can heal itself if the immune system is intact. Dr. Stoff's motto, "Learn how to get well and stay well" is what this book is all about. I highly recommend this book, his therapies and becoming a patient of Dr. Stoff if necessary. Dr. Stoff is one of God's miracles on the planet in helping people become well.
We host lectures with Dr. Stoff with our institution on a regular basis, if anyone would like to attend a live lecture or live educational conference call with Dr. Jesse Stoff, just email me.

The author clearly is knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, but I don't think that these attributes serve him particularly well in an introductory text of this type.

Best book for boys on pubertyReview Date: 2008-05-08
The text is bright and lively and the book flows in a way that let's a boy pick it up and find the information they need in order to address what they may be dealing with in their travels through puberty and daily life. It's cleverly packaged using the same trim size as a comic book -- which young boys relate to! This is the best book I've read that offers growing boys insights on dealing with bullies, family matters, sports, homework, and their ever changing bodies. It's a really terrific book!

Outlining many situations from his work as a clinical psychologist, Gardere helps remove the barriers and challenges most African-American men and women face today. Touching on topics that get down to the root of the problem, which he believes stemmed from slavery, he helps readers understand their thoughts and feelings, offering suggestions on how to heal, fix and maintain after the problems are resolved.
Who wouldn't want to stop the cycle? With light, sincere and honest feedback, this is great reading for women and men alike. This book may be the antidote that everyone has been searching for. Get in line for your prescription...

The foundation of the book uses slavery again as an ailment or crutch instead of a stepping stone. I say get a second opionion from a doctor that will state the cause and a cure to an ailment.

Additionally there is a degree of concern in the book's recommendations which could lead to an overexposure to soy in general. While certain very specific elements of soy (in quite moderate dosages) appear to positively affect prostate enlargement, the case history for "preventing" or "curing" prostate cancer appears less so and needs to be balanced out by concerns related to overconsumption of soy (considerable research as to soy's adverse effect on thyroid functioning for example).

Likewise, zinc oversupplementation apparently has surfaced as cause for concern:

"Zinc Supplements May Double Risk of Advanced Prostate Cancer"
Finally, I found that the book was inconsistent in other statements.
For example, on page 3 the book stated "suffice it to say, no prostate, no orgasm..." and yet on page 140 it states that one can have one's prostate completely removed and still have an orgasm. There is an obvious need to update and/or correct any future editions...
