This is an old book that my Mom had. I'm in my 40s and hurt my shoulders in a bad fall. I was visiting my mom and started
these simple, time-tested exercises. They start out slow and build with a focus on the core and posture. I find I stand
up straighter and am much more toned after just a few weeks. I suppose any exercise program does this for you...it's just
that these are so deceptively easy, you don't hurt yourself and get great results. Of course, we've learned a lot about fitness
over the last 40 years so I do modify some exercises or add a stability ball, but the basics are the basics and this book
does an excellent job of training and tuning your body in 30 minutes/day. Finally, Miss Craig was a Physical Therapists for
people with bad backs, so she's very knowledgeable.

I wasn't real sure of the book from the title. But having bought the book some years ago, I have sent it to several friends.
It is a great tool to simply talk about how to invest in clothing and yourself to provide the best possible look.
It also has recipes for cologne and other goods men use daily. It provides an easier and simpler way to focus on a healthier and more professional looking self.

I have a web page about tubal sterilization, and because of all the feedback I've been receiving from my visitors, I have
been searching for any information I can find about tubal sterilization. This book was an amazing find for me. It answers
my questions and concerns in great detail. It is written for the educated layperson. Unlike far too many other resources,
it does NOT omit valuable information in the misguided attempt to simplify the facts. I recommend this book to everyone interested
in reproductive health and contraception.

"Nobody Knows What My Dreams Are" is set in Dublin of the 1960s. The narrator, Pat, a man in his 20s, still lives at home
in an uneasy relationship with his parents, works unenthusiastically at a middle-of-the-road insurance office, and is generally
uninspired by life. He has neither contentment, nor the motivation to seek it out. The course of his life is abruptly altered
outside a cinema one Winter afternoon, when 11 year old Andrew - needing an adult to gain entry to the cinema - approaches
Pat and asks him to assist. It transpires that Andrew's father died while Andrew was young, and his life is sullen, solitary
and joyless. The two develop a symbiotic relationship whose impact upon each of their lives is incalculable.
The novel charts the course of this highly emotional, and at times volatile, relationship over a one year period, with particular focus upon the possibilities it raises for Pat to find a meaningful existence. Although the author's idealism is somewhat strained on occasion, the intensity which engulfs each chapter maintains the novel's compelling pace, and the air of anticipation keeps the pages turning. The vision of a Platonic 'ideal love' that emerges is beautifully captured - if, (perhaps inevitably?) the studied absence of Eros detracts from the relationship's authenticity. The 1960s setting is a significant choice in generating the atmosphere of optimism, cleverly providing a stark and desolate contrast to the joy that neither Andrew nor Pat would have the opportunity to experience today.
Poignant and thought-provoking, "Nobody Knows What My Dreams Are" deserves a widespread readership. The multi-layered thematic messages imbue the novel with broad relevance, regardless of the reader's age or gender, while ensuring that its appeal can be paradoxically specific. It will be fascinating to read more from Patrick Clerkin. Recommended.

Older Men (Down Under)

This book has nothing to do with commerce; it's about numerous issues that older men face. It's written in a chatty style
that won't intimidate readers, including those with deteriorating vision. The author recites personal stories and stories
from others to give the book a user-friendly feel. He breaks down medical points in accessible language.
The book has cute cartoons at the end of each chapter. He doesn't treat older men as a monolithic group. He shows a photo of an Asian man and speaks about immigrants. He includes the story of a man who came out in his later years. He includes helpful hints to older men. For example, he suggests that they give advice, not orders, to younger people. He tells the lonely and depressed that they must make the first move to address their burdens.
This book is Australian, and I think some things won't apply to older, American men. First, here we write "aging," while the author spells it "ageing." Second, I think Australia may have far more safety nets and social programs than the US. Remember, 41 million Americans don't have health insurance, including many older men. The author minimizes crime against the elderly, but I'd say this is a real issue for older Americans.
This book is not sexist. It speaks of when gender plays a role in difference, but in no way does it say men have it worse than women. The book includes anecdotes from women speaking of their husbands. One men's studies scholar wrote that women read men's studies much more than men do. So I could imagine many wives and daughters enjoying this book and asking if it describes the older men in their lives.

The Epilogue

Review Date: 2002-01-05
After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in my mid 50s and at least in the near-term saddled with erectile dysfunction after
surgery, I am interested in learning more about the male sexuality as it relates to this experience. Handy's book published
in 1996 leads the reader through several hundred pages of ruminations about his waning sexual vitality. Males, I learned,
are preoccupied with their erections. Handy is no exception. He shares his thoughts, feelings and insights about his medical
condition sprinkled with some factual data. There, are, however, other books that tackle the biotechnical aspects of this
condition more completely and more currently. It is Handy's rumination that is the focus of the book. One might experience
the subtext as his effort to heal himself. The ruminative and erection centered content of the book led me to speed through
it and almost put it down before reading the epilogue that fortunately his editor requested. The epilogue is of a nature
that the reader might not think that the author actually wrote it. It is authentic and reflective. It provides the reader
the answer of what it is like to suffer from erectile dysfunction. There is a real sense of intimacy and eloquence in the
epilogue that is not present in the balance of the book. He effectively articulates the confusion and loss of self and personal
direction that I am sure many others experience. In particular his discussion of his relationships and marriage provide insight
and will perhaps make readers feel less alone. I strongly recommend the epilogue as a good piece of literature.

The most important lesson from this book is that there is no such thing as "privacy" for gay sex.A few chapters are mystifying
(Hollister's and Lane') but there are fascinating chapters on cruising in Hanoi (Aaronson), straight-identified men's wider
conception of "private" than gay men's (Leap), historical explorations of 19th-century Netherlands (van der Meer)and 1950s
Montrel (Higgins), and -- far and away the most graphic -- Stephen Murray's demonstration that gay men differ in their responses
to and valuations of being observed having sex.
