Functional tool for better health and peace of mind
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-03
Although there are many books on the market today intending to teach men how to take better care of the physical aspects of their hearts, this is the first book to provide that information as well as insights on how to care for the spiritual aspects of the heart. Written by a pastor and two cardiologists, the book shows the connectedness between the mind, heart, and soul in providing a balanced approach to good health.

Total Heart Health for Men has its strengths and weaknesses. Since it is written, obviously, for men, one of its strengths is that each chapter ends with a bulleted list of the key points that were covered; most men like to cut to the bottom line. Also, it has pragmatic information that can be put to immediate use: recipes that are easy to fix and nutritional; menus for planning a healthier eating fare; exercise routines for stamina and weight control; meditations and prayer plans for personal time with God; specific Scripture references for information on honoring the body as the temple of God; and stress-reducing suggestions for taking relief off a strained body system.

The book's key weakness is that the chapters often take too long to get to the point. There is too much back story. The illustrations drag out. The lessons about spiritual disciplines have a "sound" much like a sermon. Although the warnings against extramarital sex, improper business dealings, and other similar vices are valid, they come off too much like a lecture. Grown men prefer to have positive reinforcement, specific game plans for change, and concise and focused presentations. The book could have been trimmed substantially and benefited from a more rigorous editing.

Nevertheless, since the book's table of contents makes it obvious which chapters cover specific subjects, the reader can be selective and go directly to the material on exercising or nutrition or spiritual maturation. If read that way, it becomes a functional tool for better health and more peace of mind. -- Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, Christian Book Previews.com

Well-balanced and informative

Review Date: 1999-11-21
This is a very good book if you are looking for a well-balanced discussion of the male hormone testosterone. The author writes with a sound fact-base and strives to give clarity to a subject that is often clouded by hype, scandal or just plain misinformation. If the book has a fault, it tends to be repetitive in places, citing far too many examples of testosterone replacement therapy working miracles in the lives of men with testosterone deficiency. Otherwise, a very interesting read.

ESSENTIAL READING for health care providers and others

Review Date: 1999-11-25
This book is a must-read for all health care providers who "take pride in the philosophy that all persons receive equal treatment, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, religion, age, or ability to pay." it "uncovers the roots of these problems, explores how prejudices have become institutionalized, and offers viable solutions for real change." for members of the G/L/B/T community, much of this book is not going to come as a surprise, but it is still enlightening reading with a huge list of references, and draws both on hard data and narrative health care experiences from G/L/B/T folx. highly reccomended

When Opportunity Knocks

Review Date: 2008-05-12
Sounds like this King character is nothing more than an opportunist. I find it amazing 1) that he only decided to talk about this AFTER he had been caught/exposed; 2) that he does not condemn the behavior, and his only words of encouragement to those practicing such behavior is to "protect yourself". Even though his secret has been discovered, what says he has stopped this foolishness? Remember, he claims to have had these tendencies since he was a teen, and first acted on those tendencies when we was 19 years old! The message that he is sending is LOUD and CLEAR...He does not condemn the behavior and has no problem exploiting it for gain -- a book first, and now a "tour" with his ex-wife? Wake up PPL...He claims to be a God-fearing man, so what is Godly about the position and stand that he has made?...The Bible has a word that describes people like J. L. King;

2 Peter 2:12-15 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, 13 and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. 15 They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

This book was Okay. I commend J. L. King for bringing this subject to light, however sometimes I felt as if he were bragging about his activities. The down low is disgusting and nothing to brag about. When women discover their significant other is sleeping with men, it is very devastating. In additon to this book I recommend [[ASIN:0981544320 The Straight-Up Truth About The Down-Low: Women share their stories of betrayal, pain and survival]. "The Straight-Up Truth About the Down-Low", gives an honest portrayal of what really goes on in the down-low lifestyle. In addition it gives all of the warning signs and true stories told by women who experienced this betrayal. Any woman who wants the true story should get the book by Joy Marie.

I don't condone this lifestyle, but it is still going to exist, rather I like it or not. I am a happily married woman, but God forbid if something happens to my husband and I have to go back out here on the dating scene again. Thanks to J.L Kings book I will not be so easy to fall for men without investigating them first and picking up on signs. Even if I never have to worry about dating again , I can defintely educate my kids (both girls) about this topic. Don't try to keep topics like this from your kids thinking it wont affect them, because better you tell them, than they find out in a negative way and end up with Aids!

"How it works..."

Review Date: 2008-06-08
If you have/have had a problem with alcohol, this is the book to read. The AA program has "worked" for millions of people, since 1935, when other tried means did not. For the guy who said the chapter, "To the Wives," is a sexist piece of trash: Use your brains, buddy. It describes the alcoholic, whether male or female, and how their ("politically correct") significant others can cope. I'm a female recovering alcholic and didn't have trouble relating to the chapter nor saw it as offensive. AA saved my life and I will forever be grateful. And the text, "Alcoholics Anonymous," proved invaluable in my recovery journey. -- Debbie S., Andover, KS

I was 21 when I got sober. At the time, I thought the book was outdated and could never help me. Somebody suggested that I go to a meeting to study this book, I drug my heels all the way there--but, five years later I'm still sober and that book study meeting is my homegroup.

This book has worked for millions of alcoholics. It's not the only way to get sober, but it's what's worked for me--for that, I'm greatful.

I don't really understand the lengths I've seen people go to to discredit this book or the 12 steps in general. I am not a member of AA but I have a family member who was saved literally from the brink of death by NA. The changes in her and in her life have been nothing short of miraculous. If it was a 'cult' that brought about this change in her then I say Thank God for the 12-step cult, for it is truly a force of good.

I'm a recovering alcoholic. This book saved my life.

If you think you MIGHT have a drinking problem, buy this book and read the first 164 pages. If you identify with what you're reading, then you might want to consider hitting a few meetings.

You have to get beyond the prose of the author. It's very 1930's. Since he knew it would be saving a lot of lives, he wanted it to sound really important.

Many like me read this book, and found that in many cases, it seemed like the book someone stole a story out of our own experiences.

This book was actually recommended to me by my doctor! And after reading the reviews I decided I dont need a book that basically focuses EVEN MORE on the man and pretty much ignores women's needs! So, no thanks...I think I will find a book that is a little less male chauvinistic and a little more pro women's needs.

John Gray Should Not Be Giving Bedroom Advice

Review Date: 2008-04-28
In the words of my husband, "This guy [John Gray] has an agenda. You've got to feel bad for his wife."

After reading this book together, both my husband and I were very disappointed. My husband was really insulted that Gray made men out to be sex machines who require an orgasm in order to love and feel. I was upset that women were characterized as essentially sexless, needing our male counterparts to coax us into having intercourse. Even more annoying though, Gray devalues female orgasms almost completely, and at no time is it appropriate for a woman to decline sex. Of course women should make the attempt to pleasure their men (most will want to), but Gray has the idea that women should give it to their lovers anytime, anywhere. Seriously, I can picture Gray explaining that a woman in labor can just give her husband/boyfriend a quickie if he's feeling frisky and she's just not in the mood given that she's giving birth and all. On the other hand, according to Gray, it's hard for a man to say no to sex, so if he does, a woman should take care of things herself.

Gray's views on a loving sexual relationship were too one-sided and extreme for my husband and I. We really don't think Gray should be giving bedroom advice, nor does he seem qualified to be. (FYI: Google Gray's educational background. It's a joke. The school he received his PhD from no longer exists. Too bad I didn't realize this until we had already bought and read the book).

Memorable Sex

If you have been married for over ten years you may not find very many new ideas from this book. However, even one or two unique ideas can infuse your relationship with new passion. "Mars and Venus in the Bedroom" is perfect for newlyweds or anyone who wants an exciting refresher course in sexuality.

John Gray takes a realistic approach to sex as opposed to a romantic fantasy. He gives lots of practical ideas to enhance the sexual experience. It is helpful to know that this book has been written for couples in a committed monogamous relationship. The ideas are guaranteed to ignite or keep passion alive in a long-term relationship.

This book addresses the emotional and physical needs of both partners. I felt like I agreed with most of the book. I did seem to question one item that stood out to me as important. John Gray explains how if a woman doesn't want sex then she should be open to a quickie. On the other side of the story, if a man doesn't want sex then it is "written in stone." A section is then dedicated to ways a woman can ignite passion by what she wears to bed. There are also some ideas on how to write erotic letters although the example is from the male perspective. A letter written by a woman would have been equally as interesting.

In the section on romance John Gray states that potted plants are not romantic. Personally I prefer them to cut flowers since they last longer. So some of the advice won't always work and you have to personalize the romantic experience. Unfortunately I must say that all the potted plants my husband received from girlfriends in the past have had an untimely end.

John Gray is such a delightful man, with such a correct
insight into the sexual and emotional makeups, and needs of both
husbands and wives. When you think. . . "he won't cover
that subject", the next thing you know, he is completely covering it.
After listening to this, I felt excited and energized when
I thought of how more meaningful my marriage, in or out of the bedroom might be. I will write another review after I share this with my husband.
I am getting another copy for my daughter and my son-in-law.
THANK YOU JOHN GRAY!!!

Mars and Venus in the Bedroom: A Guide to Lasting Romance and Passion I purchased this audio to hear what Dr. Gray's take was on the subject of intimacy between a man and a woman. I was surprised to know that this man was previously "a man of the cloth" with an accent on "a man". I was very impress with his expertise on how to tap into each others emotions and bodies to fulfill the God given gift of sexuality. I must say that the material was sexually explicit and therefore was packaged as such. Dr. Gray spoke with much candor and experience in his field of counseling of men and women and have given me a insight on those relationships relating in marriages. I will be entering into marriage soon and will be taking this information to help me to make my marriage work.
