Don't get a vasectomy!

Vasectomy can cause chronic pain. The percentage of men known to suffer from this problem varies in the available post-vasectomy studies (2-30%). Many man suffer in silence. In one large study I read, 10% of men regretted the decision to have the procedure done. Many are not told of this prior to the procedure. Some men pursue a reversal which is costly and painful. Don't do it unless you are willing to take a lifelong risk with your sexual functioning and are aware of the substantial risk of chronic pain.

Mandatory reading for anyone considering vasectomy.

I am a dentist. I was impressed by the credentials of the author. I was planning on getting a vasectomy until I read this book. The author quotes numerous articles that discuss medical problems after vasectomy. These include cancer, atherosclerosis, autoimmune diseases, allergies, etc. I personally verified several of the reference articles on Medline. The book is written so it can be understood by the layperson and it includes a medical glossary. I highly recommend it.

I found this to be very informative and backed up some of the references to specific illnesses I had found on line from first hand accounts of complications. It is frighteneing the lack of "informed consent" that is evident with the long term effects of this often dismissed as "minor surgery". Generally, bruising, soreness and swelling are all the complications mentioned. I would highly reccomend this be read by every male and female spouse contemplating this life changing surgery being performed in reality to prevent a temporary fertility issue. Don't schedule an appointment without reading this first.

Finally an M.D. that unmasks the Vasectomy Conspiracy!

Men;Do yourself a favor make a small investment, by this book before its too late. Dr. Roberts pulls no punches, he tells you what very, very few Drs. with admit to. Yes, there are many complications, and the complications, if you are in the 2-15% that ends up with a problem, your LIFE will NEVER be the same.I wish I would have known now, about this book in 1989 or I never would have done it. Dr. Roberts has the balls to tell the truth, which will probable anger all the Urologists and other Drs.for letting the cat out of the bag. This procedure is a cash cow for for many a Dr. And if you go back to your Dr. with problems they LIE about what's wrong.Unfortunately, the cure for most of the problems is very expensive micro-surgery. I know because I've been there.

I read constantly and have dozens and dozens of books waiting for me to read-but when this one arrived I read it right away. I had to know all about beards. I LOVE facial hair on men though I don't particularly like beards. Make sense??? What I'm saying is that I like sideburns, goatees, soul patches, goatees without moustache, etc. Just seeing a man with a heavy shadow and the proverbial 5 o'clock shadow. ALL very sexy!! I would have liked more present day photos, but I liked it all. I wish someone would write a book about men's hairy legs. One thousand sets of hairy legs. Then I would really go crazy!!

Beard? Weird!

I, for one, find body hair of any description totally abhorrent, so I found this book one of the most difficult and challenging reads of my life. Peterkin's description of hair follicles, for example, borders, at times, on the pornographic.
I had to skip the chapter where he waxes lyrical about the curl-to-density ratio of pubic hair because I became too nauseous to carry on reading.

History, meaning, and how-to

Psychiatrist and writer Allan Peterkin has a playful and curious mind, and an obvious love of research. His past wanderings have taken him into the vagaries and varieties of the language of erotics, which he tackled enthusiastically - with a thesaurus, no less. The subject of beards is one that he admits he had never given much thought until one morning a few years ago.

His interest was piqued, he says in his introduction to this delightful book, in "one of those perverse moments of inspiration." Walking to work in downtown Toronto, "rather than indulging my own thoughts as usual," he started noticing faces, and he then noticed that more than a third of the males were in some fashion bearded, soul patched, sideburned, mustachioed - and so it began. He wanted to uncover the meanings of facial hair, the "unconscious reasons" that men grew and tended beards, and even the "ritualistic symbolism of shaving." He wondered what women thought about beards. His survey expanded to his colleagues, his psychotherapy patients, and strap-hangers on the Toronto subway. (You might guess that he asked his friends, too.) He was off and running.

This marvelous and generously-illustrated book is the result of his considerable ability to tackle his subject with energy, brainpower, humor and a sense of fun. It's a documentary, a history, a survey, an appreciation, and a catalogue. There are hundreds of black and white illustrations, and topical quotations from famous and not so famous beard-wearers. Chapter 6 deals with the (usually) unwanted thing: "The Feminine Beard." The compulsory beard (the Taliban being a recent and dramatic example of mandatory beardedness) is examined, too - in a chapter on religious beards. There's a "Timeline of Queer Facial Hair" among other remarkable bits of information in the chapter "The Gay Beard."

Facial hair's inevitable products and labors (shaving cream, razors, clippers, trimmers, and more) are included. Chapter 13, "The Personal Beard: Grooming Strategies" is a sort of owner's manual. If Great-grand-dad is no longer around to show you how to strop a razor, you can use Peterkin's instructions.

There are a lot of useful addresses and websites listed at this book's end (even "Where to Order False Facial Hair" should you need some), an extensive bibliography but, unfortunately, no index. Nonetheless this is a delightful book that is comprehensive and smart - and also a lot of fun. I know that I won't look at or think about facial hair in quite the same way ever again.

I found this book moderately amusing when I first came across it but that was before I discovered Fashions in Hair (2001-9th edition) by Richard Corson, certainly the ultimate, definitive source on the history of facial hair. This is sort of the cliff notes version of that book...lightweight, whimsical, jokey, brief, lacking the almost overwhelming detail, historical illustrations and info of the Corson book (first published in the 60's and updated numerous times since). The Corson book is the way to go if you're a beard afficianado.

I don't have a beard myself, but I know a lot of people who do, and this is a fascinating account of the history of facial hair that provides some interesting factoids and insight into the meaning of why some of us choose to wear hair on our faces. I gave this book to some of my bearded friends, and they loved it. It's a real winner.

Dr. Pilgrim has put together an excellent guide to the various treatments for prostate cancer. With chapters written by doctors, specialists in this field, it will help patients and those who are interested in the care of a loved one find the right treatment.

I highly recommend this book for the newly diagnosed. Dr. Pilgrim has a style of writing that makes it easy for the layman to understand. His gentle, caring sense of humor removes some of the fears associated with being told you have prostate cancer.

A Misleading Title

If you have prostate cancer and are looking for a listing of conservative and perhaps dated ways of understanding it and dealing with it, then you might find this book useful. If you are looking for leading edge information about the disease, methods of preventing it and dealing with it, I strongly suggest you do not look at this book. There is nothing revolutionary or even vaguely adverturous about what is offered here. Since this book was published in 1998, a great deal of new and useful information has emerged from many souces of investigation. Some of this information started out from "alternative" sources and is now in clinical trials at major research centers, like Columbia University. In the meantime, many of the established methods of diagnosis and treatment listed in this book are under attack by memebers of the medical profession as well as alternative practitioners for being babaric and for lack of proof that any of it extends life while it certainly diminshes the quality of life. So if you are, in fact, looking for an enlightened approach to planning your approach to this issue, I suggest that you look elsewhere. There are a multitude of sources of information available with new material being added continually which can be reasearced on the Internet.

An Essential Guide for the Prostate Cancer Patient

I found the first edition of this book to be my most valuable reference in introducing me to the subject of prostate cancer. Not only is it a compendium of useful material, it shows how to use the internet to gain access to the most current thinking by a group of true experts and to benefit from the experiences of others who have undergone various treatments. The new edition is more compact and has an index, both significant advantages over the original. Several chapters were co-written by physicians who are recognized as leaders in their disciplines. I give the highest recommendation to this book for the newly diagnosed man. All of the jargon is defined here; a few hours spent with this book will make it much easier to digest other less user-friendly but important material. Two minor complaints could easily be remedied in future editions- a more detailed index and a list of references would be helpful.

Important book in any battle against prostate cancer

Review Date: 2003-09-04
A revolutionary Approach to Prostate Cancer by Dr. Aubrey Pilgrim and Dr. E. David Crawford is an important resource for getting questions answered. Dr. Pilgrim is a prostate cancer survivor and advocate, while Dr. Crawford is a recognized expert in Prostate cancer.

When a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer questions he never thought about before need to be answered in language he can understand. He and his support team actually need to know what questions to ask of his physician. For example ... "What exactly is prostate cancer? How is it staged?" He wants to make the best use of the time he has with his doctor so what should he ask? With this book, the reader will have excellent information at his finger tips. Pretreatment tests are explained. Treatments are discussed as well as why one treatment might be preferred over another depending on personal staging circumstances. Then, after treatment, what can I/we expect?

Graphs, illustrations and photos clearly guide the reader through the maze of new information that he/she is learning.
This is an honest and factual book which incorporates the expertise and experiences of many physicians as well as prostate cancer survivers. There are also stories from a few who left us too soon but made a remarkable contribution to the battle which most men with prostate cancer are now winning. Winning doesn't always come easy...it takes strategy and tools. You will find that here. Even after initial treatment, this book continues to be a resource for the man who wisely monitors his health.

I thought the book was very helpful in understanding our black men. Understanding and knowing what black men and women want and expect from each other is very important along with communication. Dr. Mulligan didn't put much effort into writing this book. She relied on surveys and excerts (quotes) from other authors. If anything, the quotes were more interesting than Dr. Mullligan's limited writing in the book. You better off buying the books by the other authors she quoted. Additionally, Dr. Mulligan did not give the complete results to the survey questions.

Given the back of the book, it is easy to assume this a how-to book, another guide for the customer from Itiel. But this is really more of an autobiographical account of his own lifestyle choice to focus on the use of hustlers or male prostitutes. A solid definition of "virtual boyfriend" isn't even offered and the "how-to" parts are very few and far between. If you read his first book and thought he was an interesting man, you might like this. If you want to know how to get a virtual boyfriend, you mostly need to figure that out for yourself.

Unpleasant at best

It is astonishing to me that this book was published at all. Much less by a scholarly small press. In Mr Itiel's defence it must be acknowledged that his writings will be of some value as source material for students of gay men and class dynamics. What makes this volume as revealing as it is disturbing are the insights offered unwittingly. Mr Itiel exhibits boundless pride in confiding his expert technique for scoring more sex for less dollars. In one memorable entry he shares tips on how best to train boys not to expect gifts - blithefully unconscious of any parallel to guidebooks on training spaniels. Almost in the same breath he asks we take special note that some of his rent boys grow into friends of a sort - even `virtual boyfriends'. He urges us to follow his example.

So fevered is the author's earnestness some readers may not consider that his voiceless young men friends might have very different `insights' to offer. In the seemingly improbable event any of them will ever be afforded opportunity to author how-to books.

Mr Itiel candidly portrays himself as a financially successful middle-aged white man with a preference for dark-skinned youths typically from lower income backgrounds (but always of `legal' age, he carefully emphasizes - rather conveniently ignoring the fact that his books endorse activities which are illegal in his native California and are harshly punished in every state in the US). Some would see his sexual predilection as inherently exploitive. That is not my viewpoint. What does alarm me is that Mr Itiel appears so far beyond even contemplating the ethics of older men of means bartering with boys from the barrio for pleasures of the flesh.

Readers with a conscience should take note of several earlier books by Mr Itiel. PHILIPPINE DIARY : A GAY GUIDE TO THE PHILIPPINES offers tips on how to win over the parents of an island `call boy'. As for PURA VIDA! : GAY AND LESBIAN COSTA RICA the two reader reviews posted here on Amazon.com are a character reference which the publisher of this book should have heeded.

This is an absolutely wonderful book!!! And definitely a must read for clients as well as sex workers. I myself am a sex worker in San Francisco and I really applaud Mr. Itiel for writing this book. The very title is what caught my eye to begin with. As a sex worker, I have always strived to create the same type of "sex plus" relationships with my clients that Mr. itiel has created with his sex workers. So I am delighted to finally see a book that emphasizes what the client/sex worker relationship is really all about - a mutual respect for one another as well as a caring friendship, besides the obvious good fun! The book contains many interesting stories about Mr. Itiel's experiences over the years with various sex workers. I really only found 1 area in which I strongly disagreed with Mr. Itiel - he feels that, in general, sex workers charge too much for their services. While I feel that what a responsible sex worker can offer to his client certainly justifies the cost, I can also understand that, as the client, Mr. Itiel would like to be able to find sex workers as inexpensively as possible. And he has managed to do this quite successfully, proving there is a market for all of us.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a greater understanding of the dynamics behind the sex worker/client relationship. I think both sex workers and clients will benefit from reading this book - and both will benefit from enhancing their relationships with one another.

A Boyfriend of a Different Sort!

Review Date: 2002-03-27
A fascinating, informative, and valuable in depth study about the interactions between a sex worker (formerly called Hustler) and a client that establishes the rules & requirements necessary to become "virtual boyfriends", and the positive results you can expect from this different sort of boyfriend relationship. This book is an indispensable aid for anyone seeking the services of a sex worker. Additionally, it is a valuable resource for sex workers who want to have a more meaningful and closer relationship with their clients. Joseph Itiel has amassed over four decades of experience with sex workers, and he relates his mostly positive experiences with a refreshing openness & honesty. Joseph believes meaningful relationships between a sex worker and client can be possible with considerable effort and that love need not be involved in the relationship. The personal stories he tells of his own and others' experiences with many sex workers are truly captivating reading.

In Chapter Two he explains the differences between hiring someone from an agency and on the internet, and the advantages & disadvantages of advance bookings. Chapter Six deals with sex plus relationships and how the relationship between client and sex worker can be more than an exchange of money for sex. It can be an intellectual pursuit, a spiritual practice, and a time of shared social activities. It may even become a nonsexual friendship beneficial to both parties. I thought Chapter 13 was extremely useful and important with it's seven guidelines to make the working relationship with a sex worker a more friendly, emotional and positive experience. All of the chapters are filled with constructive information that you can use. This book is complete with an appendix of sex worker's web sites to help you get started.

I guarantee you will not be able to put this book down once you start it, so plan ahead and keep a few hours open. This book is perfect for anyone considering a virtual relationship with a sex worker or as a helpful guide for an experienced client. Be sure and read Joseph Itiel's first book "A Consumer's Guide to Male Hustlers", another ground-breaking study and a primer for this book. Either book can be read independently, but make sure you read both for the complete picture. Highly recommended!

As a former sex worker, I want to praise the author of "Sex Workers as Virtual Boyfriends" for his insightfulness into hustlers' lives. For two difficult years I put myself through college as a parking valet. The work was hard, the pay miserable, and I breathed in a lot of polluted air. Then I started escorting. The job was easy for the most part, the pay excellent, and my health was not in jeopardy. Like the author says, a few clients did also become good friends. ... Of course, it is older dudes paying for the services of the younger guys. They get paid *because* they are younger and nobody is being exploited. We, young escorts know exactly what we are doing, and the older clients spend their money to fulfill their needs. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to understand the life of sex workers.

As a woman in a long-term relationship, I found this book to be very helpful. Some of the problems that you may not have realized are very common and treatable, but were not comfortable discussing with friends are discussed in a conversational and common-sense fashion. It was a comfort to read of other women in relationships who were having similar problems. In that respect the book was helpful. I was able to understand some problems from the male viewpoint. I did not find the author's tone condescending or patronizing, but conversational. (However, if I were a man I might feel differently. My husband refused to look at it.) However, while helpful in addressing and explaining certain problems and possible reasons, I cannot imagine my husband (or any man that I know) to be willing to try any of the exercises. Read this book if you are encountering sexual problems and want to understand where they're coming from. That doesn't necessarily mean you will have a magical solution, but you might feel better, as I did, to know you're not alone in experiencing them and that it is not necessarily your fault.

I was one of Eva's patients...

I had the opportunity to work with Eva and her staff in the beginning of 1999 at her New York office. The practices described in this book are consistent with the exercises given by Dr. Margolies in her practice.

I came to see Eva for problems with sexual inexperience, premature ejaculation, and lack of sensation focus. Since I did not have a romantic partner at the time, I opted to do these exercises with her surrogates.

When I went to see Eva, I had not conquered a lot of anxiety and self-esteem issues. These issues came up during therapy, but had to be sidetracked, so that I could accomplish the exercises. If it weren't for the caring staff, I wouldn't have opened up and made as much progress as I did. However, after therapy, I was not ready emotionally to put my new skills into use. I lapsed into old patterns.

It is very important for the man and his partner, about to perform these exercises, to understand that without prerequisite work on possible general anxiety and abuse issues, these exercises have the potential to backfire and worsen conditions. The partner also needs to make sure none of the issues in "Chapter 11: When He's Not Getting Better" do not exist before beginning the exercises. I know that if I did these exercises with people who had issues, I would not have progressed at all.

The only issue I have is that, in her practice, Eva tends to rely on this book as a bible. For example, I couldn't convince her that I went to a massage parlour for intercourse, and not for a hand job (p.13 First Edition). I hope that she updates her views in new editions, when she encounters people who refute her beliefs in the book.

Overall, I think that this book is valuable. After having worked on underlying issues, I now feel ready to put these skills in motion when I hit the dating scene at age 25.

This book is an excellent source if you are plagued by inhibited male orgasm. It's the first source I've found which links shyness, social anxieties, late male virginity and mastubatory history to the problem. I'm a male suffering from the problem and the material is to the point an very insightful for the problem. Other sources discuss the treatment but don't give it meaning. The passages which are relevant to me were not harshly negative towards men. I found only one remark mildly distressing, namely advising women not to get into a relationship with a man who has orgasmic inhibitory problems unless properly treated (p.119 "Should you write him off?"). It seems to me that a compassionate working on the problem with an interested new partner is taken out of the picture or at least not encouraged. I'm willing to overlook that for the many added insights.

I found the book lacking and somewhat hostile towards men.

I'm not sure what Eva Margolies' credentials are, as they are not listed in the book (may/94). But I found her analysis light-weight, amateurish, and full of her own male stereotypes.

I was particularly offended at the suggestion that women should "disengage" from a relationship with a man that she believes has a sexual addiction because treating it might be a "lengthy and difficult" process. If this is her best advice perhaps no one need buy her book.

Many of the "cases" she reports sound to me to be contrived for the book and she never fails slip in her own judgements about the characters and their failings or their motivations.

Most of the men in the book are presented as either idiots who do not have any idea how their bodies work or downright obnoxious jerks who care more about their own problems than their partners.

As a man reading this book (for a female friend) I found her tone condescending and even hostile at times. I'm sure that some of the generic techniques and information presented in the book will be helpful to some people, however I'd suggest getting them from a better book.

Overall an interesting read, I found Mothers & Sons to have an inordinate number of references to Freudian psychology and Oedipal situations. The book bases it's conclusions on actual psychological case studies and sometimes reads more like a doctoral thesis than a guide to raising a loving child. While definitely insightful it doesn't contain as much practical advice as I'd hoped beyond the obvious. On the other hand there is some commentary on what makes adult men tick that was very interesting.

While some might object to the overarching psychoanalytic tone, there is a lot to learn and enjoy here as the author incorporates personal experience, anecdotes, research and mythology into her account of the relationship between mothers and sons. I liked her early statement that having a son had moved her from a rigidly feminist position toward one that is more flexible and humanistic. The first section discusses the traits that are uniquely male, and contains chapters on male energy, male role models, male separation and love & sex. I thought this was particularly informative. The second section deals with various special relationships -- shared parenting, single mothers, stepmothers and gay sons. Final chapters deal with the mature relationship between mothers and sons.

The author writes from experience and with compassion, and this is a worthwhile book for mothers (and sons) to read.

As the mother of 3 sons, I found this book particularly insightful in exploring the unique role both parents play in their sons' lives. Fascinating interpretation of standard boy's fairy tales/stories -- such as Jack & the Bean Stalk & Bambi -- and the impact such tales have on a boy's coming of age.

As a teenager aching to learn practical knowledge of basic (okay, exceptional) grooming habits, this book offered me soup to nuts advice and suggestions on a grooming regimen. It did not offer occasional use "salon" tricks, but informed the reader in establishing good habits and an ongoing routine for above average grooming. It was very readable, and had lots of good photographic illustrations (some of it for "show," perhaps to inspire the reader -- "You too can look great like these professional models"). I'm sure some of the products and fashion beliefs are now dated, but ... I wish I still had my copy. Much of its text was timeless. Example: for shaving, he recommended that anyone considering using a straight razor invest in some lessons from a local, professional barber. Above all, Hix' writing style was never pedantic. It was no-nonsense, and let the reader decide what and what not to do, daily, monthly, and for life. I still practice some of the routines I learned from LOOKING GOOD. What does that tell you?

This book is very precious, and, this will sound bitchy, but if you look at the author's photo, he is in fact a goofy-looking guy who few men would want to look like. So his own appearance belies his own advice.

I first saw a copy of Looking Good back in the late 70's when I was a skinny, pimple-faced, lost pre-teen. One look at this book, and while flipping through it, I finally discovered what I was looking for. Thru its simple step by step guidance, I started to gain self confidence, and started to be less critical of myself and more accepting of my looks. The book stresses that you can do the best with what you have. And I truly believe that if everyone accept their looks, and just do the best they can with it, they will succeed. This book had a tremendous impact on me as a pre-teen, and I still have my copy on my bookshelf that once in a while a flip through, and really measure how far I've come since the day when I was a skinny, pimple faced teenager

Though it is written from a womans view, the author did a pretty good job. I bought the book for my father because my mother just passed away... he hasn't gone through the book yet so I started reading it. A lot of the things in the book don't pretain to him and he isn't going through what others in the book have gone through. But the book is pretty good.

I found this book vitally helpful in understanding the unexpected differences in the ways men grieve a loss--myself, as an example--but it also helped me powerfully in dealing with grieving male friends. It comes in chapters that allow selective reading. But it's very well written, and once you start, you'll want to go on. I strongly recommend this book.

If you liked this book, also try "The Healing Journey Through Grief" by Phil Rich. There is also a Clinician's Guide available. This book is one in a series of self help journaling books designed to help people through life issues, and breaks the process into clear cut stages with information and journaling exercises throughout to help people understand, write about, and work through their issues and difficulties. The other books in the series, all by Phil Rich and other co-authors)include a book on journaling for individuals (The Healing Journey) and one on journaling for couples("The Healing Journey for Couples") and others ("The Healing Journey Through...") on divorce, menopause, job loss, retirement, and addiction.

I saw this book online, and thought, who are they writing for. I then read it and felt entirely left out. The authors barely suggest that gay men exist on this planet and many of them have prostate cancer. Thank goodness for other books and [...]for helping out of a pickle. At best, this book uses the word love, but does not seem to include me.

I was asked to read this book by the Prostate Cancer Charity in UK and on first sight my heart sank. Full of dry medical information - how wrong I was! My husband had a radical prostatectomy in 1997 and has recovered well but I still found encouraging material - especially about managing impotence. The book covers all aspects of prostate cancer - from diagnosis to living with the results of treatment. It deals with the medical terms and emotional effects of each stage in a down to earth manner. I also really valued the fact that it was written to me - the woman. It made me feel understood in a way that much of literature doesn't as it all male orientated. Enjoy reading it as you approach stage by stage and keep dipping into for knowledgeable reassurrance. My one regret was that all the helpful contact numbers and addresses were all American.
