Very good, thorough, non-technical book, written in a conversational style that's easy to understand yet explains everything carefully without condescending to the reader. This book is much more up-to-date than many others of its type because it addresses the current fads (oops, newly popular lifestyles) of tattoos, piercing, and other types of body modification and has a frank and unbiased discussion of various sexual practices and a good unhysterical overview of the various drugs popular in the gay community. This is the book that "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask" (ugh! what an offensive piece of garbage even in its revised edition!) should have been.

Should be on every gay man's bookshelf!

Living Well does an excellent job of covering nearly everything imaginable related to gay health. From HIV to STDs to piercings to drugs Peter explains the facts (including recent new findings), his experience and those of his patients. Everything is presented in a very open, and objective way. He's amazingly non-judgmental but not afraid to speak out against the establishment (i.e. health insurance and the pharmaceutical companies) in a few areas.

I think it's rare that someone with so much real world experience in gay male healthcare takes the time to share his vast knowledge with the rest of the world. It's even better that he's done so in such a friendly, open, easy-to-read manner. This book is a must have for gay men!

The first easy-to-read and to understand book on men's health. A woman could pick up a tip ot two as well. The best word-to-the-wise advice book around.

You'd never expect a book titled "The Man's HealthSourcebook" to be entertaining, but surprisingly it is. With wit, clarity, and style, Dr Dashe educates the reader and answers the myriad questions you might have, whether about problems as trivial as athlete's foot or as serious as angina. Each chapter discusses a different body system, how it works and what to do when it doesn't.There are countless valuable tidbits concerning medicines, health maintenance, and common sense philosophy. Best of all, Dr. Dashe's personal anecdotes make this book a great read, one you can turn to in sickness or in health.

I've come to relate to this little book and its 'sayings'. It shrinks the basic ideas we all think about down to size in a few choice words.

This book is a gem. Martin's epigrams are true and authenticfor him -- and when I read it, I see the similarities not only for myown lifetime, but the subtle victories and sometimes crushing defeat and pain that invariably comes when any of us attempt to live a unique life without guarantees of the outcome. One of my favorite Martin epigrams: "Not one of us is less delicate than the other; we simply shatter in different places."

This is a great book, and fun to read...you can open it anywhere for a fresh point of view on a variety of topics of interest to men, and to women who like men. Many leaders of the men's movement, including Robert Bly and Gersham Kaufman, contributed chapters, making this book, though expensive, worth having

Good advice on how to look and feel better
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-08
I was a little leery about purchasing this book. So many of the diet or fitness books that are available are either full of "fluff" and contain little valuable information or they are filled with trendy, speculative, and untested recommendations. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. This program is filled with solid advice on a variety of topics including exercise, diet, relaxation, and supplements. It even has sections that deal with hair care, skin care, grooming, and clothing styles.

The basic premise of this book is that if you exercise, eat well, and feel good about yourself, you will live a longer and happier life. The book is divided into 12 weeks, with each week focusing on a certain topic (e.g. eating healthy). Each day of the week, you are given an "assignment" to do. An assignment may be to do some upper body exercises or buy some grooming products. In theory, you are supposed to follow this routine by reading and completing each day's assignment on that day, then read and complete the next assignment tomorrow, and so on. In reality, most people will probably do what I did and read this like any other book, over a couple of days.

The recommendations in this book seem to be based on reputable scientific research. It is apparent that they authors have done their homework and they often provide quotes from various experts or research studies. I was also please to learn that their recommendation seemed to be very current. Even research that was published within the last year or so is quoted in this book.

It is apparent that several authors wrote this book and I found a couple of instances where the book contradicts itself. Example: In one chapter they warn against running with hand weights because it alters your natural stride and this can cause problems. In a later chapter, hand weights are recommended as way to slow yourself down if you run faster than your running partner. None of these contradictions are material though and this is a minor criticism.

This is a review of the unabridged AUDIBLE.COM (downloadable audio) version of this book. The only problem with this format, for this type of book, is that this book often list items (e.g. foods you should buy). Unless you have paper handy, and can write fast, you'll miss these. The book also describes various exercise or stretching techniques. The verbal descriptions are OK, but without a drawing or photo to show you how to perform the maneuvers, it is often difficult to translate the words into actions.

Overall I was very pleased with this purchase. If you want to improve the way you look and feel, I'd highly recommend this book.

Great all around advise...

Fathers and sons are celebrated in Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli's latest, joining with graphic designer Seymour Chwast to celebrate the time of day when Daddy comes home to be with his kids. Dogs are the characters representing father and son in this whimsical survey which arrived too late for Father's Day mention, but which deserves a place on any school or community library picturebook shelf.

Good summary of current therapy

A good summary of current therapy. The author has chosen to emphasize adopting a healthier diet and life style to help combat the disease, although he has also undergone main-line medical therapy. He also presents a number of case histories of amateur athletes and the therapies they chose. He is careful to accompany each suggested nutritional or exercise change with caveats concerning the lack of double-blind research in these areas.

A must read for cancer patients

Alan Drew's thoughtful commentary on his diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer is essential reading for men over 50. This dread disease may be treated, watched and cured if only cancer patients have the tenacity and the forethought to carefully consider all the issues: treatment methods, exercise, nutrition and meditation. Alan has explored the many avenues toward health and healing and will guide you through the process in his journal style entries. This book is critical for anyone facing prostate cancer or for the loved ones who care. I am recommending it to my doctor as well. Resources and research studies are appended.

I bought this for my 10 year old son but as a mother who had only sisters I read it, too. This book was very readable, good pictures with just the right amount of information for a pre-teen. My son read the whole book in one sitting. The timing was right for him. He then asked a few questions and it provoked some thoughtful discussion. I would highly recommend this book.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Grow!: A "What's Happening to My Body?" Book for Younger Boys (What's Happening to My Body?)I purchased this for my godson. He is starting to wonder what will happen to his body next and his mother was concerned because he was trying to look it up on the internet. She is a single parent since his father passed away and she didn't know how to help him learn about his own body. She is very pleased with this book because it provided plenty of information without being too graphic like the books meant for older boys. They have many healthy discussions based around what he has read and they read together also. He is turning 10 this month and is well on his way to understanding his "stage" of development and what is to come.

I found this book to be a wonderful read. It's not just humorous and wise, but I found that I could re-read it six months later and see new things as my own children grew older. The author has a warm way of communicating that makes this book one you'll want to keep for a long, long time.

Is a father's role essential?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-07
In an interview with Bodywise, Dr. Murphy said "We are at the most powerful and critical point of human history as the traditional roles of men and women are changing. For the first time in human history, we have a choice... Fathers are no longer necessary to the biological creation of a child; the result is a change in the constitution of the family as never before." Dr. Murphy goes on to say that "Studies show that many children in the US will have lost their father by a child's eighteenth birthday. What does this mean to our society's future? And is a father's role essential to the healthy development of a child and if so how? Research shows that children perceive their fathers as a mixture of love and fear. That fear is translated into a sense of safety against risks in the world. So as the child grows into adulthood, he has a postive sense of himself via a role model and can feel safe. Studies have shown that this feeling of security is directly to violence in adulthood". This title is for all fathers who devote and give of themselves to their children. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life between career and modern life's demands, it's easy to lose focus or maintain a sense of humor on what raising a child is truly all about; reading Popsicle Fish will certainly change that even for but a few peaceful moments. Dr. Murphy, a father to 3 children: his own child, a step-child, and an adopted son - he takes us out of 'our reality' and shows us how to look at life and its many events through the eyes and heart of a child. Don't even think about reading this title in one sitting - indulge yourself and read the 3 page chapters whenever you need a "reality check" on how vital your contribution as a father really means to your child and how it the powerful impact that will last a lifetime.
