more than just another book on herbal medicine

I waited several months after this book came out before I bought it. Now I am devouring it like I would a good novel, and wonder why I waited so long to get myself a copy. Ellen Kamhi brings to the book all her knowledge that only a microbiologist would have (besides her knowledge as a clinical healer for several decades). Dr. Zampieron brings to the book his years of treating people in his clinic of naturopathic medicine. As an example of the quality of the information: a friend and I wanted to get the real truth about using ephedra. In all other literature we only ran in to warnings to stay away from ephedra. This book gave a history of benefits of ephedra and guidelines for using it safely. The information is researched in great detail, and the authors continually cite refereed journal articles to show the reader what science has done up to now to validate these traditionally-used herbal remedies. You also get detailed instructions on how to make tinctures, poutices, castor oil packs, etc. Bottom line, with this book you are on your way to health and wellness with the gifts the planet has given us, in the form of plants.

A well rounded reference guide on the history, properties, description and applications of healing herbs used in natural pharmacopoeic prevention and treatment. This book offers a comprehensive, easy to read and practical overview of the most popular medicinal herbs and healing foods. The authors provide somatic-based analysis and recommendations on preparing do-it-yourself natural medicines, including infusions, tinctures and salves to name a few. The book is replete with detailed explanations, photographic descriptions and a handy reference index on each herb to make it a valuable source for both novice and experienced naturopath alike. The Natural Medicine Chest is an excellent introduction into the myriad world of natural medicines and home remedies - of great value, not to be missed.

Historical and Current Uses for Herbs by World Cultures

I found this book to be extremely interesting. First, it contains the wonderful photos you would expect from National Geographic. Second, it portrays cultures from around the world who rely solely on herbal remedies and some that combine the whole person with many types of healing, not just prescription drugs that healthcare providers rely on so heavily here in America. The natives of these countries have extensive knowledge regarding solutions to health problems. The book gives not only information but hope that there are many natural solutions yet to be discovered. The book explores the many successful applications by native people worldwide who have taken control of their healthcare for centuries. I found this book extremely interesting and hard to put down. We have much to learn about herbal remedies and this book is the best place to start in my opinion.

More than I expected.

From the title of this book, I expected just a list of plants that could be used medicinally. However, this book offers much more, as suggested by the subtitle of this book: "A chronicle of mankind's search for healing plants through the ages." The plant list is really only an appendix with the bulk of the book focussing on the historical development of naturopathy.

This book serves three functions: with the glorious photos, it could be simply a coffee-table book. The historical content is sufficient to stand alone. And the plant uses list (with 102 plants profiled) is detailed and informative. The art work accompanying the plants is simple, yet effective, coloured artists' sketches.

This is an excellent book for anyone who is suffering from arthritis. I personally know from relatives who suffer from arthritis that the alternative treatments in this book actually work! And I am not a fan of alternative medicine.

Pantothenic Acid works!

In her book Phyllis Eisenstein says she first read about pantothenic acid in Adelle Davis's book "Let's Get Well." I read Adelle Davis's book over 10 years ago and tried the pantothenic acid (500 mg. twice a day) with food and it absolutely works for me. It took about a month for me, but the pain and swelling in my hands miraculously subsided. I've realized that I'll have to take this the rest of my life because when I quit taking it the pain, swelling and burning of my hands and joints returns.

An iconic mark of civilized society
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-06
Ever since the first tea leaves were brought from Asia into Europe, tea drinking has been an iconic mark of civilized society. In "Passion For Tea", Beverly Rorem brings to bear her enthusiasm for tea in a compendium of information on the history of tea from its history in China, to its cultural impact on Japan, India, Russia, Turkey and the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. These historical overviews are capped off with a concluding chapter on what scientific research has revealed about the therapeutic benefits of tea for everything from alcohol damage to liver and brain, to arthritis, cholesterol, bacterial infections, cancer, skin care, and more. Deftly written and knowledgeably presented, "Passion For Tea" is very highly recommended reading for anyone who has every enjoyed a cup of tea in good company.

Rare Combination: A Brew of Fun, Careful Research, Practical Health Tips, and Even Travel Ideas!

The slightly naughty but nice cover attracted me when I first saw the book.
When I opened Beverly Rorem's new book, "Passion for Tea," I thought I would just take a tentative sip. But there I sat, drinking the entire book in, just like a delicious cup of tea. Much more than a simple overview of types of teas which is what I had expected, Bev has done her homework. Even though the book is a fun and easy read, it contains an amazing amount of scholarly research: history, international scope, specific medical and health references, and even travel suggestions in various countries including off the beaten track tea salons and tips on French waiters.
Having just visited an exhibition of Mary Cassatt's paintings, including the two that Bev references: "The Cup of Tea," and "Five O'Clock Tea," I know I will view these works with more understanding the next time I see them!
Being a tea drinker, I am familiar with a couple of the earlier books on tea, but none of them are as well written, researched, or have the scope of this new contribution to Tea Literature!
I've purchased a couple for friends and recommend you pick up a copy. Enjoy it with of course a cup of tea.

A useful field book.

Not the best field-guide ever, but a very competent, useful, well-compiled book overall. Drawings are useful, though could use more detail or photos in some cases. Descriptions are useful in identification.

The shining point of this book is in the details after the plant information. Uses, both local and western are given with information that would point you in the direction of further inquiries. Common and binomial names are given, making it even more useful for cross-referencing these plants.

An excellent ethnobotanic book.

Being a student of rainforest medicinal plants myself, I found this book one of the best, published or unpublished, to-date. The drawings are excellent, making field identification easy. The presentation of both the common and scientific names of plants is invaluable. I found it interesting that the Carribean people of Belize and the Carribean people of Costa Rica (where I am) use the same names and uses for many of the medicinal plants. This book is a wealth of information for such a small price, not to mention, motivation for further inquiry. Thank You!

After reading several books and articles on menopause, this is the first book that provided detailed information backed by research. The case studies were very enlightening. This book gave me the information necessary to advocate intelligently on my behalf with my doctors. Information about hormonal fluctuations and depletions in females is important to all women of any age.

You'll be amazed and furious when you realize that this NATURAL sweetener has been used in other parts of the world for years and yet the FDA has tried to keep it away from Americans. Guess we should "follow the money" and find out why.

All you want and need to know about Stevia

Review Date: 2000-11-26
I have done extensive research on the history and uses of Stevia. The most common roadblocks I have come across are 1. Scare tactics by artificial sweetner companies that warn of the *dangers* of this natural alternative 2. Companies that are selling Stevia themselves that write glowing fluff that, although may be true, don't provide any facts about what Stevia is or where it's history lies.

Then I found this book. Mr. Richard brings an his extensive research and knowledge to the pages and introduces the reader to Stevia from every angle. Taking the time to include growing tips, history and even recipes, this author has done an outstanding job of showing the benefits of Stevia and how easily it can and is used in the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in incorporating this healthful plant into their life and for anyone who wonders what all the hype is about.

Review Date: 1999-11-08
Explains well the many ways to use this incredible natural remedy. A frined follwoed the books instructions and it healed the fungal infection on his foot. As the book recommended, I told a girlfriend to massage some onto her scalp and add some to her shampoo, to get rid of her itching scalp and dandruff that she had unsuccessfully tried many dandruff shampoos on, it worked. I used it for my eczema, like the book said and finally have something safe and easy to use for my skin problem. tea tree and this book are staples I wwould not want to be without - they are great!

A must have for the safe & effective use of tea tree oil.

It's a user friendly book, that has help me save money. It is very well cross referenced in the main section and in the index. I was surprised to find out the hundreds of ways as well as health and other uses tea tree oil is good for. It helped my teenage daughter clear-up her acne. Discovered tea tree is great for disinfecting and cleaning uses. Best idea was how to use tea tree oil with my regular toothpaste to get rid of plaque. The dentists hygenist asked me if I'd recently had my teeth cleaned, sincew there was so little plaque. That tip alone, made the book worth it.

Whether you've been going to an acupuncturist for years or are just now considering traditional Chinese medicine as a cure for your ills, Heidi Nye's primer is for you. In just a few pages, she discusses all you need to know about the theory and application of this 5,000-year-old system of health and healing. Nye includes sections on how the Five Element Theory can be used to pinpoint personality types and how ancient Chinese sexual practices can increase pleasure and longevity.

It's about time!

It's about time somebody wrote a book about traditional Chinese medicine that is well-formated and easy-to-follow! With our growing displeasure of chemical treatments that appear to often be worse than the disease itself, the time has come for this fresh and informational book. Nye's book not only challenges our beliefs about healing and prevention of disease, but offers a cornucopia of ways to clarify our beliefs through the wisdom of our ancestors. Having recently lost my 50-year-old husband to cancer, I can attest to the vain and misguided attempts by the medical profession to treat him. Their "treatments" made his last few months a nightmare, not only for him but for all who loved him. Unsuccessful and dangerous in their treatments, yet they lead more lambs to slaughter daily with their ignorance of natural health and preventive care. If I were diagnosed with a serious illness today, I would first turn to Nye's book before I considered any other alternatives. Kudos to a fine book and a fine writer! The book is a MUST for any home library!
