The Healthy Heart Cookbook

Of my hundreds of cookbooks, this is absolutely my favorite. The cookbook begins with a section called "Living a Healthy Lifestyle", which is a tremendously helpful guide to making the right choices and eating for a healthier heart. Each recipe is easy to follow, simple to make, and doesn't require an all-day-affair to eat healthy choices. All of the recipes are delicious, and best of all healthy. Each recipe lists the grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates, along with the cholesterol and sodium. All of the resipes fall well below the recommended 200 mg cholesterol per day. There are even beautiful color photos of many of the recipes. I am a certified registered nurse anesthetist who firmly believes that no one can afford to pass this cookbook up! This is a must have for anyone with high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and for those who don't want to join the ranks of those who do.

Thank you for writing such an informative book. The reason I bought your book was that I have Crohn's disease and you write about it in your book. I have told family about the book and the product Moducare, which I have also started using. I hope that a lot of people can benefit from the concise information that you have brought to our attention. Thanks a million.

Excellent for traveling with food allergies or sensitivities

This is the first multi-lingual allergy guide I have ever come across. The authors have done an excellent job. Though dialects may vary, and certain regions may have their own ways of describing a food, this is a very helpful little resource.

It is literally the size of a passport, and thus perfect for travel. It is English based with translations for French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The phrases address various situations (from conversing with waiters to describing symptoms to a doctor) and the food translations cover the "top eight" food allergens (milk, wheat, eggs, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts) plus gluten and corn. I highly recommend this phrase book for anyone who is traveling with food allergies, intolerances, or a special diet.

Living Gluten Free Answer Book

Review Date: 2008-09-12
My doctor recently made a case for me to try a gluten free diet. I tested negative for celiac but she thinks I have a gluten sensitivity nonetheless. The idea of changing to gluten free seemed daunting and I resisted the attempt until I started reading this excellent book by Susanne Bowland. Bowland has thoroughly researched the topic of gluten free living and presents a wide variety of indpeth information in a well organized easy to read book. She cites resources galore and the index is extremely helpful as well. Bowland makes an effective and convincing case that, going gluten free is about the abundance of new foods (as well as medicines & cosmetics) to try rather than about denial. Like many things in life, success is predicated on attitude. My own experience validates Bowland's statement that if you feel much better, then sticking to a gluten free diet is not very difficult to do - especially with the help of this book! Beyond opening the reader's horizons to new taste treats, Bowland also provides useful nutritional information as well as hints on successful food preparation, baking, and dining out. This book is a FANTASTIC resource, a kind of "bible" for gluten free living. Bowland knows what she is talking about.

Reverse and Prevent Heart Disease. Stop the Pain.
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 32 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-10
What's the number one killer in America? AIDS? Diabetes? Cancer? America's big killer is heart disease. In the United States, over 1.25 million heart attacks occur each year. To make matters worse many of those who suffer such attacks die before they reach a hospital. According to McDougall, "The cause of the most common form of heart disease is blockage of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The blockages, results of the condition known as atherosclerosis, are caused by plaques forming along the internal walls of the arteries. Eating rich foods loaded with cholesterol and fats leads to the formation of these plaques. Heredity is also a factor, but should not be over emphasized because at least half the American population is susceptible. Besides, you can do nothing about changing your heredity."

But there is a lot you can change--and McDougall shows you what and how.

He answers all your questions, and most importantly, he backs up his statements with a stack of references to the medical literature. And unlike angioplasty and bypass surgery which are temporary, short-term relief measures (at best), McDougall provides long-terms solutions that remove the cause allowing your body to reverse blockages, and for those without blockages--how to prevent them. His primary emphasis is on a zero cholesterol, very low fat, plant based diet.

The book is fairly complete, includes answers to all your frequently asked questions, includes an abundance of tasty recipes, and explains many things your doctor hasn't told you (in most cases because he does not know). As a former professor in Internal Medicine at Univ. Hawaii Medical School Dr. McDougall does.

If Americans followed the advice in this book there would be little or no heart disease in this country. Best of all if you follow McDougall's advice and follow his dietary advice you will find that the "drugs that were intended to reduce chest pain should be decreased gradually in dosage and then discontinued entirely as soon as possible." This of course should ONLY be done under the supervision of a doctor.

I would buy three copies of this book. One for yourself, one for your loved one, and one for your doctor.

What your doctor does not know may kill you--and many cardiologists sadly are ignorant of the information provided in this book--though thanks in part to the efforts of doctors like McDougall, Ornish, Fuhrman ..., and others, many of them are learning.

Medical Mysteries is fascinating and informative not only for the target audience but for older readers as well. Adoiescent boys will enjoy the photographs of whole brains and brain segments dispersed throughout the book. The book is nicely organized with six main categories: Medical Science, Pathology, Genetics, Heredity, Classification, and Physiology.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter dealing with morgellons disease, a baffling condition about which relatively little is written.
Those with an interest with the odd and mysterious will enjoy this fast moving book, a book made even better with fabulous photographs and excellent graphics.

Complete review about the health benefits of fiber
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-14
Most Americans consume 8-12 grams per day of fiber because we prefer foods containing "fat, sugar, and salt." By increasing our fiber intake up to 25-30 grams per day, we can decrease our chances of heart disease, cancer, and stroke considerably. These are the three main causes of death in America. Increased fiber intake has many other health benefits that are reviewed here. Betty Kamen has taken an otherwise boring subject - "fiber" and made her text interesting, informative, and highly documented with medical literature. Everyone can benefit from the concepts presented here - everyone who wants to live longer and healthier. Armed with this knowledge and by taking a fiber supplement (Bios Life 2 by Rexall), I have personally lost 29 lbs. in 10 weeks, lowered my cholesterol from 228 down to 170 in the first 23 days, and lowered my blood pressure from 130/90 to 118/70. The facts presented here are truly life changing. I'm a physician, and I personally recommend this book to many people with health care concerns that fiber either prevents or potentially cures. "Fiber" - how could something so simple escape the modern medical world? Betty Kamen's book reminds us of our past dietary habits before the fast food industry and the processed foods came on the scene.
