following this for many years but now I have Dr. Peter D'Adamo

My family has a history of type 2 diabetes, so I wanted to know how to avoid becoming a diabetic. This book in addition to the other books especially Live Right 4 Your Type have been excellent resources to help me understand my genetic hertitage. I am an O blood type, secretor. I am amazed at how much more energetic and powerful I feel now that I have been utilizing the diet for a year now. I rarely feel fatigued now. I have increased muscle mass. Best of all, now that I have eliminated wheat products, dairy and corn from my diet, I do not have anymore cramping/pain in my colon.

I know that avoiding the 'avoid foods' is difficult. It was for me too; I had been eating a goblet of ice cream every night before going to bed and I loved OREO cookies. As we get older (I'm 40 now) however we need to leave such childish eating behavior behind us if we want to be healthy and this book is the best resource I have read to date. If you are overweight and/or diabetic and you want take eating action to solve your health condition this book is a start. I also would highly recomend working with a doctor who is IjHI (Institute for Human Individuality) Certified. These doctors specialize in treating diabetes and other preventable health conditions with this diet. These doctors are not cheap but worth every penny if you value your health. Doctors not certified are simply unaware of treatments that can solve someones diabetic condition, so they prescribe what they know short term solutions (drugs).

I love being in control of my health, my kids do too. It's not easy or cheap, but it's worth it. If you solve the problem, you live life with joy; If treat the symptoms only, you live life with agony.

I bought this book as a naive, newly-diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic last December. My experience with it has been significantly negative. The basic dietary premise that a diabetic should consume 50-60 percent of their daily diet from carbohydrates, just doesn't pass a sanity test. The very idea that I'm supposed to control my blood glucose by eating mostly foods that seriously elevate blood glucose is not eating away diabetes; it is eating your way into higher blood glucose. I had to abandon this eating plan early on, and have found a better solution.
Look carefully at the glowing reviews; many were written by other "professionals."

the book was easy reading with some interesting facts.
But...the recipes were not very palatable. I gave the muffins I baked to the birds because they tasted like bird food and the rest of the dishes I tried to feed to the dog.
I do not recommend this book. There are more out there with more information about diabetes and better recipes.

Type 2 diabetes is a national epidemic. Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, are necessary to prevent complications (heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, blindness) in those with Type 2 diabetes and prevent the disease from occurring in those at high risk. Medical advice regarding diet often leaves patients confused and therefore unable to follow their advice. Kristine Napier defines Type II diabetes and the steps needed to control this disease in a way that is easy to understand. She provides advice and examples to help the reader incorporate her guidelines into their everyday life. Her 28 day guide of menus will help those get started and as always, Kris's recipes are easy to follow and delicious. Last, but not least of importance, is that all of Kris's advice is based on scientific evidence and conforms to national guidelines.

Highly recommended for EVERYONE desiring good health!

Eat Away Diabetes is extremely well researched and superbly written! Taking complex subject matter, the author uses practical explanations and analogies, thereby making diabetes much easier to understand. The information is current and extremely useful for people with Type 2 diabetes and those working to prevent this potentially devastating (but preventable) disease. Numerous charts and sidebars are used throughout which serve as excellent references in my practice as a registered dietitian. The author emphasizes the importance of exercise at length and explains the roles of fiber, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamin/mineral supplementation, and herbs. Ms. Napier also provides 28 days of menus and their accompanying recipes (which are healthy, creative, and tasty). This book will remain a useful resource in my professional practice and daily life! Thank you, Kristine Napier!

Kristine Napier is obviously an authority on diabetes as well as a nutritionist-- and we could probably cure a national epidemic (Type 2 diabetes) if we would all follow the advice in this book. But this isn't like one of those health books that preaches all kinds of impossible advice. It's filled with really simple recipes. The ones I've tried are easy to make, and taste delicious. It's food for kids as well as adults. At last, we've got a book on the kitchen shelf that we can trust completely.

In 1992, my doctor told me that I would have to endure another 'set' of Silver Nitrate treatments for my bladder problem. (It was not cancer.) The first 'set' of six treatments and the second 'set' of eight treatments had not worked. My bladder condition was getting worse. These treatments were very painful, so I refused to have any more done. My stepmother suggested I go to a health food store to see if they had any ideas on what I could do naturally to cure my bladder problems. They suggested I read The Grape Cure. After reading it, I sent it to my stepmother. She advised that I carefully wash the grapes and not stay on the diet for too long, but since I did not have diabetes there shouldn't be anything in grapes that would harm me for a short period even though they are high in sugar. I followed the instructions in the book, peeling the grapes in the beginning and never eating over a certain amount. For nearly 3 months, I ate nothing but grapes. I have never had trouble with my bladder since. I felt great and even lost 40 pounds. Although I know this book isn't for everyone, I do know that it worked for me. Eating nothing but grapes for so long may not be a good idea for everyone, but it did cure me. I wonder if the doctor that so vehemently criticized this book has actually tried it.

This book/diet DEFINITELY has merit. I say this from personal experience. I know, I know...you are just some allopathic "doctor" who loves to collect money for prescribing drugs. The m and the d behind your name doesn't mean you always know what you are talking about. The word "doctor" USED to mean "teacher". Boy, have things changed. Did this book take away some of your insurance money? Did it actually keep some of your patients from coming to see you? That's a shame, huh? Oh, darn...that Mercedes payment is just going to have to come from sending someone to collections for not paying their co-pay.

-Actual- science is a rarity. What is promoted as science in society is often deception: Research is conducted by supposed scientific groups that are actually owned by the product's manufacturer. Government organisations named to sound like protection offices,(Department of Agriculture), are actually in place to promote business. Results are simply not released when the results don't go the 'right' way, so what the public sees as proof may be the one time out of ten that insures the "scientist's" job security. Conclusions are often drawn that contradict the obviously real conclusions, with the understanding that most of us won't wade through the technical jargon. My point is that "anecdotal evidence" , so maligned by the supposed scientists, is a whole different matter when it's YOUR anecdote. I'm witnesss to benign skin tumors dissolving,(for lack of a better word), on diets similar to the Grape Cure. Yes, going too long would be a mistake, but a couple of weeks on fruits only, during the warmer months, is certainly less harmful than ANY alternative offered by the 'proven' methods of the medical community. If you want be a 'Quackwatcher', the first thing you need to 'watch' is the 'Quackwatchers' themselves, where hidden motives abound.

I believe Grapes is another one of God's great healing foods. I read the book many years ago and have always thought about what I read. Now once again the book is making a come back. Drugs don't heal, only alleviate symptoms. I know you need drugs in emergencies, but then study what's natural and try to heal your body that way. I believe grapes can clean out the toxins inside the body, but you must do a wholistic program for the grapes to be effective.
I say don't close your ears to the benefits of Grape Juice and just start incorporating it in your diet.

I ordered this book for a friend, who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She loved it so much that I ordered one for myself (and I'm not diabetic) and she ordered another copy for her brother! Since many older adults deal with diabetes and many of them cook for just one person, this book helps to make a significant life change easier to manage. Older people often have many reasons not to cook for themselves, relying on fast foods when they need to change old habits and eat more healthfully. The recipes are easy and tempting making this guide truly useful for seniors and others who live alone...diabetic or not. Change can be fun and tasty too!

Not enough helpful hints for coping
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-16
The person with lupus must struggle with strong and conflicting emotions while trying to maintain as normal a life as possible despite pain, disability, and changes in personal relationships. This book attempts to offer ideas for dealing with these problems.

Unfortunately, this book sometimes glosses over the difficulties the person with lupus faces. There are some helpful hints in it; but often, the author spends far more space describing a problem than offering solutions for solving it. For example, here is the complete advice for people worried about no longer being able to work: "Talk to people. Speak to others with lupus who cannot work. Find out what they are doing to cope. Maybe you'll get some ideas that will help you conquer this fear."

When the author does provide hints for coping, he often doesn't go into much detail. For example, the section on using relaxation techniques to combat pain contains just four sentences. It mentions meditation, autogenic training, hypnosis, and deep breathing, but it does not even define them, let alone give instructions for any of them or tell you where to find out more information.

There are no easy answers for the obstacles people with lupus face each day; still, the reader would have been better served if the author had spent less time "feeling the reader's pain" and more time helping her solve it.

This book is repetitive and very poorly edited. The author states the same approach to cooking meat and chicken in different chapters. However, the chapters are almost identical, except for the words "chicken" or "meat". The science in the book is based on an "unpublished paper" by the author. Funding for the book was provided by a grant from a company for which she is the CEO/founder. This book is useless.

I bought this book almost immediately when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. It (along with general info from with web) got me acquainted with how I should eat with my diabetes, and made me feel more comfortable with my ability to cope with my condition.

This book stands out from others because goes beyond just telling you WHAT to do to manage your diabetes, it also tells you the WHY. By helping you understand the reasoning behind dietary and exercise guidelines, the author gives you the knowledge you need to make intelligent decisions when presented with situations not covered by guidelines alone. She seems to understand that everything isn't always black and white in life, and you have to make choices based on many factors.

I'm newly diagnosed. Since I'm not on any medications (and hope to keep it that way for as long as possible), the two tools I have to manage my diabetes are exercise and diet. This book addresses the diet aspect very well, while touching on the importance of exercise. It's not a scientific text, so it doesn't go into excruciating detail. It's an easy read. She helps you understand how the body works without diabetes, and then explains what happens differently when you have diabetes. You'll come to understand how different foods affect your blood glucose level - and WHY. Which allows you to understand and develop your own meal plan if you don't have access to a nutritionist. If you do, you'll better understand why your nutritionist makes the recommendations she does, and you will have the knowledge to discuss various options with her.

This may not be the first thing you want to read if you've just discovered you need to live in a way that manages your blood glucose levels. There are higher level overview books; educational websites run by the Joslin Center or American Diabetes Association; or better yet, diabetes management programs taught by diabetes educators and nutritionists at most local hospital that will give you a solid foundation. Ask your doctor about local programs if he hasn't recommended it to you already.

With that knowledge under your belt, this is an excellent book to take you down to the next level of detail.

I got this book along with many others in order to learn more about my renal disease. I read this one first, and was impressed by the clarity of the explanations. However, after reading more about renal diets I became aware that the nutritional information given in the book for specific foods was grossly incorrect.

I DO NOT reccommend using this book as a guide to meal planning and preparation. It is far too basic, leaves out too many foods, and furthermore it gives dangerously incorrect content levels of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus for specific foods. Upon reading other renal diet books it is clear that the levels of some foods are 3 to 4 times higher than stated in this book. Please be careful with your health and double check.

Try the online publication found here: publications.gc.ca. Search for H58-28-1999E

Also, this book is very misleading, in that it refuses to allow for vegetarian or low meat-protein diets. Many studies have been done that show that vegetarian diets are FINE for those with renal disease. Again, double check for the sake of your health.

Review Date: 2008-01-31

I am sitting here drinking lemon slices squeezed into my water, and I just have to tell you: this is the best health advice book I have ever read. I am still reading it, but this book WILL change your life.

I have lost about 7 pounds in a few weeks by adding lemon water, juicing my carrots, apples, fruits - eating oranges and more salads and a LOT less of the processed foods I used to eat.

In truth, I used to drink a quart of orange juice a day and eat mostly salads. But that was before kids. Things got very busy and I had a bad accident, which hampered my energy for a few years. So then the poor eating habits started.

But man, I will tell you, I really appreciate having my great eating habits back.

People have told me for years that I look way younger than my chronological years. Great skin, for one.

I used to exercise a lot but that has fallen a bit. But back to the book.

European eating habits have been following this for years. This is not a newcomer idea according to the way I grew up.

What is this pH stuff and what is 'balance your body chemistry'?

You may remember pH and acid/base - acid/alkaline from Chemistry class perhaps.

Michelle Schoffro Cook tells us that our bodies function best when the pH is on the alkaline side - that our blood is more alkaline than acid. That would mean a pH or litmus reading of about 7.0- to 7.364 or slightly higher. Sounds easy?

Well, most people in the Western industrialized world eat foods that are processed as acid in our body, Michelle tells us. Our beloved dairy, meat, chicken, fish, eggs and even grains are all processed as acids, leaving us often with acid-blood levels rather than alkaline blood levels.

Add to that all the stuff we eat that is not actually food but a food product: Mickey D, other fast food and many other foods we eat are all processed with preservatives added and nutrients that have been removed or rendered inactive by Pasteurization and other processing. The enzymes in food are all rendered inactive by Pasteurization or any heating above 118 degrees Fahrenheit.

Meat processing is full of antibiotics as well as bacteria. So our beloved meat is not as healthy as it was for our grandparents, when cattle and poultry roamed free and were not given antibiotics or growth hormone, or had water or other agents injected into them to make the product more appealing.

So what is happening?

Michelle tells us that meat, dairy and grains are largely acidic in our blood. The countries that consume the most dairy products ALSO have the greatest amount of osteoporosis. How can that be? We've been told from time immemorial to drink our milk for strong bones and teeth.

Our diets are acidic - acid diets cause the elimination of calcium in our bones.

So how do we make our bones strong?

By changing our diets from acidic to alkaline.

Are there other benefits to having an alkaline diet?

You bet, Michelle tells us.

Research Michelle quotes reveals some potential links between acidic diets and cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, Alzheimers, asthma, allergies, arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia and a host of other disorders and illnesses.

Not that diet alone can necessarily prevent or cure everything. But it cannot hurt. And can go a long way toward helping you feel better.

The corollary is also true: Research reveals that an alkaline diet can help prevent these diseases and may improve these diseases when they are already in place, Michelle tells us.

The countries with the lowest incidence of osteoporosis do not consume vast quantities of animal protein. These countries eat fresh fruits and vegetables and legumes. Legumes, unlike grains, are alkaline and are highly beneficial to our diets, according to Michelle.

Is it difficult to change from an acid diet to an alkaline one?

Michelle provides many easy tips for doing this.

!. Do not drink Soda or Diet Soda. Not only are these highly acidic in our blood, it takes many cups of alkaline-based water to neutralize these effects.

2. Squeeze fresh lemon into your tap water. Lemon in water turns the water alkaline. All our cells need fresh water - not soda, not commercial lemonade or commercial juices, coffees or tea - but plain water to function. By having several cups of lemon water daily, you are on your way to neutralizing some of the harmful effects of the acids in our diet.

3. Keep coffee and tea to a minimum, as these are acidic in the body.

4. Eating fresh citrus fruits are alkaline in our body. Even though citrus fruits and tomatoes are acidic as we eat them, they turn alkaline in our body and are very beneficial.

(In the last three weeks, I have been eating 3 oranges a day at break or with lunch and drinking lemon water. I bought a ring two months ago that fit snugly on my finger. In the last three weeks, since adding lemon water and oranges to my diet, my ring is now loose on my finger. That means I am processing water more effectively; my body is operating much more efficiently than before I drank lemon water and ate oranges.)

Michelle provides some excellent recipes such as Sweet Potato Fries (a great alkaline substitute for acidic white potato French Fries) and Chocolate Mousse with Avocado - avocados are loaded with alkaline properties.

Kidney beans, chickpeas, black beans are all alkaline.

The avoidance of white sugar and white flour is important for reasons I never actually understood. White sugar is a sugar of course; bacteria and other microbes FEED off of sugar. White flour is also a sugar in our bodies, as is Alcohol. Not only are these acidic in our bodies but they are the PARTY HARDY DISCOTHEQUES for bacteria and other illnesses that weaken our bodies.

If you are ill or in pain, do not despair. It is never too late.

Michelle has numerous stories of clients who came to her with illness and/or pain; after making some easy changes in diet, the clients returned a few weeks later with great improvement in their symptoms.

People think that 'drinking their fruit' as it says on the front of some commercial juices is great. But there is really no benefit to drinking these kinds of juices. Not only do they not have any pulp of the fruit, they are laden with corn syrup, sweeteners and artificial flavors or preservatives, and the original enzymes in whatever amount of fruit juice these concoctions originally contained has been killed or rendered inactive by the required heating process of Pasteurization.

So how do you get your recommended fruit and vegetables?

A good Caesar salad, side of fruit or fresh veggie, lemon water, citrus fruits, blueberries, tomatoes, avocados, legumes, bean or alfalfa sprouts. Many others.

Eating some alkaline foods to balance the acid-based foods we eat can go a long way to preventing or restoring our health.

Food processing removes so many nutrients that we need.

(I have a little story to tell you. About 15 years ago, I had an injury and was in chronic pain for years. I had a juicer - a juice extractor. I began to make carrot juice. I was in a LOT less pain just from drinking the carrot juice than I had been before drinking it.)

How is this possible? Juice extracted from fresh fruits and vegetables is a highly concentrated way of getting nutrients. Make your own V-8 - it will be much healthier.

These extracted juices have phytochemicals that are so essential to health.

We have now begun to juice our carrots and other fruits and vegetables again.

Do not worry if you think you cannot be perfect; except for people who are Vegan (no consumption of animal products), it is not possible to be perfect. Just making positive steps in the direction of alkaline diets will help you.

Michelle has a lot of terrific recipes and ways to tests one's saliva or urine for alkalinity/acidity - as markers on the road to better health.

For the many who do not feel up to par or who do not feel well, this book WILL change your life. I'm buying several for people I know.

People at my work have ALREADY bought this book because they saw the results on me within a week.

A MUST READ.

This is an outstanding book both in content and in readability. It is practical, many of the books out there on acid-alkaline are over the top extreme, recommending all vegan or only raw foods - this book has a plan I can actually implement in my life.

Also, she includes a bibliography in the back of the book (references - yeah!) which I find reassuring as there are too many health and alternative medicine books out there that make many a statement and claim, but you have to wonder if they have a foot to stand on. A section of recipes is included also, every one that I have tried has turned out well, tasting great and surprisingly satisfying.

I think this will be a life changing book for many. I should add that those who have read a great deal of alternative medicine/health books may not like this book, as it is with out all the hype and salesmanship type motivational talk (but that is what I like about this particular book).

I read the book clear through. It confirms everything I know about appropriate health principles but doesn't add anything that is not better written in other books. If you need to read a book that covers the health principles that the mainstream doesn't understand, this is your book. If you want to know why these things are true try a different book because this one didn't answer the why for me, just the what.
