Not for cancer recovery

This book was a huge disappointment to someone trying to take care of a cancer patient. It is, in essence, a re-hash of the familiar food pyramid guidelines that advise low-fat, low-protein and high-carbohydrate diets, organized around specific cancers. The scientific basis, if there is one, relates to epidemiologic studies of cancer risk. It might be helpful to someone who is trying to reduce their risk of various cancers by altering their dietary habits, but I doubt if this book has much more to offer than most of what has been published on that topic over the past several years. It has no scientific grounding for those who already have cancer, and may in fact suggest dietary patterns that would undermine the nutritional needs of those who are already in treatment, when fats and proteins may be friends. For someone undergoing cancer treatment, or in recovery from that ordeal, it has very little to offer that the hand-outs in your doctor's office don't already tell you.

This is an excellent book. It allows cancer patients and their caregivers to understand why certain foods and eating styles may help or hurt. It also provides sample recipes to start the patient along in modifying his/her diet.

I found this book so very helpful. I have a couple of health issues that can be controlled with dietary monotoring, but sometimes we wonder, is this ok or not, should I have this food, or not, and this book tells me what I needed to know, and it is written in a very frank way, leaving no doubt as to what you are being told. Of course no book can take the place of seeing your Dr., but this book answers so many questions.

This book has been instrumental in bringing relief to several personal aches and pains over the years. Whether instantly calming two Colicky crying babies, by simply following this book's advice of turning on a vacuum cleaner, I suggest handheld, or extremely helpful information about relieving Gout. These remedies have been right-on-the-mark. For sufferers of all ailments, what have you got to lose?

Try a few of these helpful suggestions.

We have all heard of various wives tales, and home remedies, and most likely tried one or two when we have had an ailment. This book is compiled by Prevention magazines. Compiling approximately 140 various ailments that we all have. Each topic is given several pages of suggestions. Since its Prevention magazine they do seem to be plausible, and not harmful in anyway. Often the text is accompanied by text doctors have written on their suggestions. Book covers topics for men, women, children, and even your pets. I found the book education, and the suggestions very helpful.

This book is interesting. It gives you an array of suggestions broken down by topic. It covers your entire family and pets. There are notes from doctors covering the suggestions on the topics and I thought it got out of hand a bit there. But it gives you something to think about and go from there.

The third updated edition of a classic book on diabetes meal planning is a 'must' in any home diabetic's cookbook collection, as well as for public lending libraries. From understanding portions and label information to menu planning, it holds everything needed to understand and modify a diet.

This book isn't just for diabetics; it's for anyone who wants to learn how to put together a nutritionally sound diet.

You'll come away understanding the Food Pyramid, daily requirements (for starches, carbs, protein, fats; with a explanation of difference between carbs and starches), calorie requirements, glycemix index & load, supplements, reading labels, portion sizes and simple ways to incorporate all this information into your daily life.

I don't understand why this isn't a dieting or nutrition bestseller. Absolutely outstanding

There are also 100 wonderful recipes and a week's worth of menus. The recipes are easy and taste great. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to eat right without spending lots of $$$.

I cannot say how much the content of this book has changed our lives. The diet is simple and very nutritious, but what are amazing are the statistics, the lives it has improved and/or saved. Amongst those this diet has saved, is my father who religiously has followed it and blesses Dr. Moerman. A definite recommendation not just to those with the monster disease, but to all who would like to improve their chances of not getting it.

A very effective diet and simple to follow.

This book does a very good job of providing anyone with cancer a highly effective, but very simple diet to build the immune system and effectively fight the disease. Dr. Moerman has over 60 years of results with animals and humans with this diet. In addition to the easy to follow diet, his recommendations on nutritional supplements are concise, simple, and again based on years of research and hundreds of patients. I highly recommend this diet for people who are sick as well as those who just want to stay healthy. Dr. Brian Bussanich

Review Date: 2000-08-31
The weakest part of the book is the mixed units given on page 74 for the supplements. These range from tablespoons through milligrams to international units. How are all these related? What are the equivalents? In particular the doses for Iodine, Iron and Sulfur on page 50 do not make sense in the UK. Pharmasists can supply Iron Sulphate but Iodene and Sulfur are not available. This rather spoils an otherwise excellent book.

Essentials of Human Diseases and Conditions looks and reads much like my college anatomy and physiology text with a good glossary and many colorful illustrations. It does not have pre- or post- tests, or chapter objectives or reviews. The book is easy on the eyes and easy to browse; not formatted as a crowded exhaustive reference.

The book is a well organized and indexed study of the most common human diseases (Cushings syndrome is represented, pheochromocytoma is not.) The text is arranged by the human body systems. The diseases of each system are presented first with discussion of symptoms and indications, then origin and cause, then methods of diagnosis, and finally treatment

The book's preface indicates it was written for "students of clinical medicine in the fields of medical assisting, medical transcription, insurance coding and other allied health programs who have had an introduction to basic anatomy and physiology of the human body and to medical terminology". I do agree there are prerequisites to the text; it is not a "home and family" reference. I am a degreed medical radiological technologist with some years of experience and wanted a quick reference to review the disease processes of some of the patients I do CTs on. The book is useful but not as complete as I would like. I will need to supplement it with an extensive, harder on the eyes and harder to browse reference.

This book is a great first book for gluten-free initiates. I've been eating a gluten-free diet for about a year now--reading tons of literature on the subject--so most of this book was a review for me. However, there were some gems about certain nutrients that I may lack and creative ways to add them to my diet. The recipes were also helpful and quick to make, unlike many other gluten-free recipe books where you have to have custom flour blends on hand to make anything.

Being new to gluten-free eating, I wanted a book focusing on good nutrition without gluten grains. This nutrition book on gluten-free eating is just wonderful.

The author has a very pleasant, user-friendly way of writing. She gives great tips on the science of gluten free eating, plus her own opinions on the more controversial topics of gluten free eating such as oats, wheat protein, etc. She is very clear on science vs. opinion, which I appreciate very much, since there is so much misinformation out there on gluten free eating.

A very pleasant surprise were the recipes. They are absolutely scrumptious and include some very creative recipes for breads, pizzas, etc. In fact I am so impressed with the recipes I only hope the author's next venture is a gluten-free cookbook.

I highly recommend this book to those concerned with gluten free nutrition and eating. I only hope it gets the attention it deserves. Great book!

Great Ideas for Healthy Eating
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-29
The Healthy Carb Diabetes Cookbook is aimed at people who want to eat more healthily while explicitly avoiding high sugar and high starch meals. I certainly laud that mission! However, be aware that many of these pages come down to being eating ideas rather than actual recipes. For some cooks this is great! For others it might be a bit frustrating.

Pretty much every recipe is a single page. You get recipes broken out into breakfast, lunch, dinner, sides / appetizers and desserts. As with any recipe book, there are going to be recipes you adore and others you just aren't personally fond of. Some of us love scallops, some of us hate scallops. It's not a bad thing, it's a nice thing that we all have different taste buds.

So in that sense, we went more for a general style sense on the cookbook rather than praising or disliking specific recipes.

So first, many of the recipes are on the vague side. They include things like "get some frozen waffles and put berries on top". Or perhaps "get some frozen fish fillets - cook them according to the package - and put them on hamburger buns". Yes, other of the recipes are more complete, but sticking with the one-page theme they tend to have brief descriptions.

Because of these situations, we were extremely curious how the nutritional information was calculated. After all, if you use different pre-made frozen waffles, they can vary wildly as to their nutritional content. The same is true for tortillas, mentioned in another recipe. One recipe said the salt was optional - but was the salt included in the nutritional value, or not?

Now, that all being said, we really like a lot of the ideas presented here. It's not as much that they give you a "real recipe" to follow as much as they give you a cool idea. Mexican tuna salad? That sounds rather delicious! I don't need to follow their exact recipe - I can use their cool starting point and go from there. Cheesy cauliflower mash? I can easily do that, but not use their fat-free half-and-half.

However, I didn't really need their ice cream sandwich idea of "take a scoop of ice cream - put it between two low carb cookies" :) To me that doesn't deserve a full page of it's own. How about including several ice cream ideas all together, to make it a little more complete?

So, if you get stuck for ideas, then definitely use this book to help you get some new ones! Eating healthy is a VERY delicious way to live and you can eat delicious new things every day. If you already have a number of low carb cookbooks and have a variety of recipe ideas, then you probably can grab this at your library and just skim it for another idea or two.

i learned things i didn't know, even after trying to educate myself more about cholesterol for the past 5 years. i was already near my desired weight, but by applying the advice and tracking my daily consumption for a few months, my overall count dropped 20 points (258 to 238) and my LDL dropped 10. my doctor and i agreed to keep at it for another 4 months and see if trend continues.
now my wife and kids are picking recipes from the back for us to try at home, so i think there's a good chance i'll see more improvement.

I purchased this book at the suggestion of a friend while I was recovering from Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery..(a triple bypass). I was in need of information that would help me recover and take me forward to avoid needing surgery in the future, to bring me back to a state of good health and to find ways to do it with little disruption. I had a few other books given to me, or suggested. I have found that The New Living Heart Diet is an amazingly complete "how to" manual for someone with heart disease or is trying to prevent it. I would reccommend it to a friend.
