Perfect for a 3rd or 4th year neurology elective

This book was originally written as a clinical companion to Kandel, Schwartz, and Jessell's Principles of Neural Science, but it works quite well as a stand-alone for a neurology clerkship. It has the perfect balance of detailed neuroanatomy and clinical relevance. I strongly recommend it to anyone. It's about 300 pages, but it's an easy 300 pages. The first 100 give a detailed neurologic history and physical exam with relevant discussion of neuroanatomy. It's arranged so that during the first 100 pages there are references to specific cases in the last 200 pages so you're constantly flipping to the back for a clinical presentation of whatever pathology you're reading about. It's the perfect length for a 4-week elective. I paid $13 (including shipping) for my used but unmarked copy on Amazon Marketplace.

Intellectual and yet a fun and interesting introduction to the Neurological exam - and common Neurological disorders. Dr. Brust is a great teacher. This is evident in the way he conveys his approach to clinically relevant neural science.

This manual for surgery in Lesser Developed Countries would be invalualble for any physician contemplating working overseas in operating suites far less sophisticated than they would be used to here in the United States. It is full of specific descriptions and illustrations covering a comprehensive list of surgical procedures one may be asked to do while doing volunteer medical work. The little vignettes about actual situations at the end of each chapter add an excellent perspective. My associate,... has used this book extensively in Haiti for thirteen years, and finds it extremely useful.

This book enables you to do any kind of surgical operations, even if you are not able at all, even if you have never seen that operation done before. It is mainly focused on low technology operating techniques but shows also how to perform very complicated operations. It tells you all kinds of problems you can expect, all kinds of complication you may cause by your incapacity and how to solve them.
I used it a lot right before operations; it told me in advance the mistakes I would do and how to repair the damage.
Even if you work in a rich country you will find it great; in fact, even with high technology operating theatres, you can still use low technology to solve big problems.

Dr Phillip takes the reader on an anatomical journey, exploring all the ups, downs, rights and wrongs of surgery for the colon, rectum, and of course... the anus. This journey is not without it's share of danger, however Dr Phillip always reveals the perfect solution to the reader. I have no doubt that this story will continue to shock, intrigue, and amuse readers for years to come. I highly recommend this book, it is a fascinating read, and it contains frequent use of the word rectum!

"The Rally Board" is a wonderful book of support for families of kids with heart problems, but also for anyone with a loved one who is suffering from any ailment. Mr. Sasena teaches us how important it is to focus on the positive. Clearly his daughter's life was hanging in the balance, but by focusing on the positive I believe he changed the focus of the health care providers who were caring for her- which definitely is a good thing.

The family tradegy of watching your child suffer through a physical ailment is nearly unparalleled. Mr. Sasena's foresight to engage the oftentimes business practice of monitoring and measuring a projects progress with his 'rally board' was brilliant. Not only did it bolster the family and staff by daily marking every iota of progress, but proved to be a testimony of the importance of keeping focused on the positive no matter how small, because it's those positive baby steps that bring you to the goal line -- in this instance, recovery and good health. This little story will be a bright spot to anyone being challenged with similar events.

An excellent guide for preparing for surgery and the healing process after the event. I read it as part of my pre-surgery prep and incorporated many of the things in the book as well as applying things recommended post-surgically; I am convinced it was invaluable as an aid to my quick recovery. I would suggest this be mandatory reading for anyone having any type of surgery!

A must buy for trauma and orthopaedic surgeons!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-16
The authors are the masters of AO school about fracture management. The AO philosophy is well explained in the text. The section on the pelvis and acetabulum fractures are the essence of the whole book. The main disadvantages of this work are about fractures involving spine, wrist, and hand. The section on spinal trauma loses its focus. This book omits the management of the wrist and hand fractures, a sad thing. The management for proximal humerus fracture is quite old fashioned. The AO had developed many new implants recently but barely mentioned in this book. Many proofreading errors will be encoutered but they won't lessen the value of this great work. A great buy for clinician, and junior resident. This book is very easy to read and help yougrasp the essence of the AO phiolosophy in short time. Enjoy!

My Aunt just had her eyes done at Long Island Eye Care... her descision was totally influenced by reading this and two other books on eye surgeries. She ended up avoiding Lasik and going with Mike Sable, a master. No scaring or pain, on visible anything 24 hours after the procedure...no dry eye... go to the Jordan of Surgery in your area if you are messing with your eyes. Cut no corners and read and study to inform this most crittical of descisions.

This book gave me all the information that I needed in order to make an educated decision regarding which refractive surgery was right for me. It is written in terms that a regular person can comprehend, which in turn, enabled me to communicate with my own physician more clearly.

I highly recommend this book if you are considering refractive surgery of any kind. You'll be glad you did!
