This amazing true story is about a violent 6-year old. You will be amazed by the details of how her teacher--Torey Hayden--reaches out to this child with special needs. This book is a must for teachers and parents.

I was required to get this book for my special education training that I need for my master's. This book was very interesting. It showed the good and bad things Torey Hayden did in the course of serving this one child, Sheila. I could not put it down.

This story gave me tears of sadness and tears of joy. While it is heartbreaking to learn of all the abuse Sheila has endured, it is
heartwarming to know that SOMEONE took the time and effort to encourage her and to reach out to her. This book is a wonderful testament to the power of love and the human spirit.

My second book by Torey Hayden, but definitely not my last.
ONE CHILD is the story of Sheila, a young girl who was abandoned on the side of a highway by her mother. Now the charge of her drunken father, Sheila is wild, sometimes crazy, and never cries.
What follows after her arrival in Ms. Hayden's classroom (following an incident that is truly chilling) is the relationship that grows, in a short period of time, between Sheila and Torey.
A very good but emotional read. I highly recommend it, and also recommend picking up a copy of The Tiger's Child, which is the continuation of Sheila's story.

This is the third edition I use. I am a psychiatrist but like to keep up with what happens in other fields of medicine. I use it to look up illnesses and symptoms my patients and friends com up with. I use it to get ideas about diagnoses. I believe this is a book to recommend to new doctors. Of course the articles about each somatic state are very short so they need to be followed up elsewhere. But this book is a real good starter. I recommend i warmly.

This is probably a redundant review since all the reviews are 5* reviews, but I'll give you my perspective. This is the third copy of this book I own, the other two being previous editions. If I could own only one medical book, this would be it. While it has grown ~ 500 pages since the last edition I own, it's all good. Every topic is covered both succinctly and authoritatively and kept up to date. The section on AIDS for instance was excellent, nonexistant from my previous edition. Same with Autism and countless other topics. Cross referencing this with other medical texts, time and again the information was accurate, current and on target. The editorial style between topics was consistent, highly readable and easy to absorb quickly. Sitting down to read a topic was always a pleasurable learning experience - loaded with information and to the point. Most importantly for a book of this nature the Index and Tables of contents for each chapter allow you to get to information quickly. This book makes highly effective use of your time investment in a topic.
This book ranks as THE essential book to have in any medical library, whether your library consists of one book or (as mine does), several walls of bookshelves full of books.

This book has been wonderful! I am thrilled to be able to use it on my journey through nursing school. This book is a pathophysiology life saver as well. The care plans listed here and the information that is in this little book make life much easier! If you are in the medical field, you should own this book. If you are someone that is interested in just learning more, you might want to try the family edition that isn't quite as technical.

Our youngest son was born 14wks premature and not knowing anything about extreme premature babies we saught out a good book to help be a resource. Our son was lucky to only have a cpap and appeared to be doing well, but soon we were on quite a ride. From NEC, intestinal surgery, Pulminary Hypertension, chronic lung disease and surgery to repair a hole in his heart, we weren't sure what he was going to be up against next. This book helped guide us in a factual way.
Today he is 13 months old and has overcome EVERYTHING! He is a healthy and happy little boy working on keeping up with his big brother. We feel incredibly blessed.

This product was extemely helpful in getting me ready for my twins. They were born 11 weeks eary and I was much more prepared for the NICU and what the care would involve for the hospital stay for my boys. I would suggest others with multiples or complications read it.

This was a very good book. It helped my daughter and I better understand what was going on in the NICU and with my grandson and why things are done a certain way. It lets you know the criteria that your baby needs to meet before he or she can come home. It also talked about Kangaroo Care, which the NICU my grandson was in, never metioned until we brought up the subject.
The down side was alot of the book also pretained problems with multiple births,so we could skip alot of pages that didn't pretain to us.
All in All I would recommend this book to preemie parents.

My baby is a micro-preemie that was born at 24 weeks and 1 day gestationally. He is now 28 weeks gestational age. The NICU loaned me a copy and I pretty much devoured it.
This book was wonderful in letting me know what to expect and where my preeemie was developement wise. He has had two surgeries (for a collapsed lung and PDA) and the book helped to calm my fears and inform me of the process. The book seems to cover every issue, even when the preemie goes home and what the future looks like for him/her.
I would recommend this to any parent with a preemie.

I am having my first child any day now, and read this book to prepare. The material is thorough and well presented, as well as arranged in a way that makes sense/is easy to read.
Both authors are parents and pediatricians, so give you the scoop from a parental perspective (they spaz out too) but with a professional's point of view.
Would definitely recommend for anyone with a new baby coming home soon!

I have been expecting to have a baby within two months. I bought this book to learn how to take care of newborn before giving birth. I read some reviews before getting it. A few people didn't seem to satisfy with it. But for me, it is so great. It has got detail of each chapter and easy to read and understand. I am going to have a first baby but this book has given me so much information. If you will have a first baby like me, I think this book is really good.

I have two children who have been 'diagnosed' with ADHD. The school also suspected that my son has Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning form of autism. I was desperate to avoid drugging my kids. Dr. Bock explained, in words that a parent could understand, what could be the cause and how I could help. I tried taking my kids off of milk products (not even a casein free diet)and what a difference! My son stayed focused enough to help clean out a garage for THREE hours without any prompting from either of us. My daughter didn't show as dramatic a change, although I can say that her flare-ups of temper and stubborness have decreased. I am sold. His book gives real case studies of children he's helped (and even if he exaggerated or outright lied, it did work for my son), resources for parents looking into helping their children, and other important information. This book sits on my desk, next to the dictionary and the PDR for meds. I would recommend this book WITHOUT hestitation to any parent who needed more information on allergies, asthma, ADHD, and autism. Caution: he doesn't promise a cure, and in fact, clearly states that even with diet modifications, de-toxifying the body and nutritional supplements, some children still require medications. But, if my choices are a casein-free diet and an ADHD med versus anti-anxiety/psychotic meds & ADHD meds, well, that's a no-brainer.
Excellent book!

I saw Dr. Bock speak at the 2008 Autism One conference in Chicago, and literally ran to the book store to get the book. I ended up having to order it online, and it was so worth the wait. This book will make you laugh, and it will make you cry, and more importantly, it will provide hope and tools to parents and health care providers who want to fight the new childhood epidemics. Amazingly well written. Thank you so much Dr. Bock - a true inspiration!

When my DS first developed food allergies, this was the book that was recommended to me. This book was a god-send to me when I was overwhelmed with what was going on. Almost three years later, I am still using this book. It is an allergy bible. Included in the book are sample restaurant cards, sample letters to write to your child's school, letters for medical personnel when you travel, tips on how to start a support group, how to read a label to recognize your specific allergen and much more! I have given this book to my DS's teachers and nurses, family members and friends. This is an absolute must have!

I ordered this book when my son was first diagnosed with his peanut allergy. This is a great book with really practicle day to day information on how to deal with real life events. She lays out different scenarios such as playdates, and birthday parties, and gives different suggestions on how to deal with them depending on your situation. Also being the mother of a food allergic child, this book really spoke to me on a more personal level, such as, "you are not crazy", "you can learn to live with this, and it will be ok", and "take some deep breaths.." She also has a great appendix in the back with all sorts of information, such as a script to use and leave at your house in case you need to call 911, and information on how to start a support group.

I would highly recommend this book to parents and guardians of girls with ADHD. I saw many of my daughter's behaviors and symptoms very clearly at each stage of her life - how I wish I had had this book when she was younger! We were fortunate to have a pre-school teacher who was experienced enough to point out to us the "red flags" she was observing with our daughter's behavior in the classroom and how she related to other children, and she was professional enough not to diagnose her, but referred us to neurologist who made the diagnosis, so we caught her ADHD early, which made a huge difference. This is an eye-opening book, and will help prepare you for what may be coming as your child progresses through school and life stages. It has given me the information that I needed to understand how I can help my daughter succeed and grow and how to relate to her effectively now and in the future. Now I know why she's so tired when she comes home from school and this book makes it so obvious! The real-life examples are riveting and heart-breaking and will make any good parent want to do anything they can to help their daughter avoid those pitfalls that these women experienced throughout their lives. Bravo to the authors for recognizing that research done on boys with ADHD can only provide a piece of the puzzle - we all know that boys and girls are different and as a result, present ADHD symptoms and behaviors in different ways, as you will see when you read this book. Don't hesitate to buy this book - you will be glad you did and your daughter will be too!

This is the best book on ADHD that I have read! Sometimes the scenarios were so right on that I felt like the author must live in our house. I feel like I have a much better understanding of my daughter since reading the book. I put into practice some of the tips right away and noticed results immediately. Before reading this, I was still questioning my daughter's diagnosis but not anymore. This book may have saved my daughter's self-esteem as I now feel confident with how to help her get through her hard times.

would have helped me understand my daughter, and myself, better. This book presents the research in a way any parent can understand. It also let me know what to expect for the future. Most of the books I've read ignore the differences between ADD in boys and girls-- not this one. This book should be handed to parents of ADD girls as soon as the diagnosis is made, if not sooner.

After being frustrated and watching my daughter start to fail I was finally able to convince teachers that she had a problem with add, just because your daughter is not bouncing off the walls doesn't meant there isn't a problem. This book help me to explain many painful experiences so that the staff was able to finally step in and help. My daughter is now in excelled classes, not on meds and yes we still have our interesting days but we are able to handle them better. Our social worker used this book to give an inservice during the summer. Teachers are often taught to identify boys who cause problems as add candidates. Girls who are day dreamers or chatty cathys are overlooked, and often highly intelligent children mimic add qualities, and are just 'hardwired' differenly, they can be seen as challenging authority and problems, too often used as tutors to their classmates, when they get home is when they have a melt down, but being people pleasers somehow hold it together all day at school and save it for mom. Get the book! It saved our family.

This book is good for children who are very verbal and can understand the content. I bought this book for me to do with my 9 year old daughter and she is doing very well with it. I do a little bit at a time and go over previously completed parts to refresh her memory before moving on. I would definitely recommend this to any parent who is trying to teach their child about their disorder.

This is a great book and helps in understanding what an Asperger person feels and how they tick. I gave it to my son's teacher and she thought it was excellent! I am purchasing one for each of his teachers next year!

I have been looking for a means by which to introduce to my son the fact that he has Asperger's Syndrome. This book is a hands-on and developmentally appropriate tool for that daunting task. His special education teacher recommended it, and I now see why. It will be an invaluable resource.

To any parent or care giver for a child with Autism/ Aspergers this is an excellent way to gain insight into what your child is coping with and what you need to do to understand and help them. We first saw a copy of this a year ago and since then I have bought one for ourselves to use and one for the teaching assistant that works with our autistic child.

This is an excellent book, one that was recommended by our school psychologist for my step-son, who has Asperger's. We have started doing a couple of pages of this book every school day in the evening as part of an "Asperger's Minute". I think it is very helpful, both for us and for him, to learn about Asperger's and how it affects his brain and behavior. We are hoping that we/he can learn to help him be more successful, and have better experiences, at home and at school. I highly recommend this book both for parents and for professionals to use in the school system.

A great help. Full of factual information and practical tips from parents who've "been there." It's a valuable resource for those of us who have a child who has been diagnosed with leukemia.

I was loaned the 2nd Edition in the hospital after our son was diagnosed with ALL. This book is so valuable to the family to help you learn and weather through all the processes you could face during this difficult time. I knew I had to have my own copy and bought a second copy of the 3rd edition to share with other families through the hospital. Many other members of our family intend to buy their own copies of the book as well.
If you are hungry for information, buy this book. It calmed my nerves and made me a better team member in my son's fight against cancer.

Our Son was diagnosed in April of 2006 with ALL Leukemia. Trying to understand all of the terms, meds and schedules is hard enough. This book is written by a Mom with the help of her Doctor's expertise. It puts very scary helpless feelings in laymen's terms. This Mom goes into detail on how to comfort and successfully treat your child. She gives you her experiences on what works and what doesn't and what to expect. It is also an up- to- date book, whereas many books were written years ago. As a Mom who has gone thru 7+ months of this diagnosis, I wish someone would have given me this book the moment our Son was diagnosed. It's great for the whole family to read as well.

As a grandparent of a recently diagnosed 3 year old with ALL leukemia I have found this book an important resource for me to understand the treatment for this terrible disease. The descriptions of the types of chemo used and its side-effects have been particulalry valuable during the early months since the diagnosis. The book is comprehensive with all aspects of the disease and is full of anecdotal and suggestions for coping with this disease at all phases of treatment. It also offers lists of available resources to be accessed. I highly recommend this book for parents, family members and caregivers.

I have been a survivor of ALL Leukemia for 23 years now, and really wish there were books like this then. But now is when all these books are coming out, I am trying to find a book or information on how long term survivors can cope with the long term issues we face.
Topics like planning for college, buying a home, saving for retirement. These are issues my mother addressed with me, and now it is too late to start addressing these issues for me. For others it is not to late. We are surviving longer, and this is a new arena for the doctors and social workers need to address.

I am a telephone triage nurse and this is one of the reference books that we use. All of our copies are beat to death because of how much we use them, it is a favorite of all the nurses. There is a wealth of reliable information in this book! Everything is layed out clearly with an easy to use index. I am buying one to keep at home for reference for my kids and giving them out as gifts at baby showers. This is one book that is a must for parents. I am convinced that using it will keep a lot of parents out of the ER and doctor's offices for things that can be mananged at home.

I looked through the book and some items were read. Very informative. This was a book that I would have liked to have when I had my child several years ago. I had purchased this book for my daughter in law to have for her child. She also looked through the book and said WOW! This is good. Yes, I would recommend this book to any new mother.

I received this book as a baby shower gift before my first child was born, and I have to say, it was the most helpful gift I got. There is so much real, helpful information, including detailed guides on when to worry (and how much). A guide like that can do wonders for new parents, especially if you tend to jump right into panic mode at the first sign of trouble. When my pediatrician gave handouts at the end of the well-baby checkups, and many of them were taken directly from this book, I knew it was a winner. My oldest is 11 and it's still my go-to reference. I buy it every time I'm invited to a baby shower - it really is the best gift.

I can't say enough about how great this book is. I give it to all of my expecting friends now. I really like how you can search by symptoms and most of all how it guides you on the seriousness of the symptoms.

This book has been very helpful as a reference book whenever I've had a question about my daughter's health. It is easy to find what you need and is very common sense about such things as fevers and how to treat them. It's a great companion to the "What to expect" book and I find myself turning to this one first now.
