I wish I had this book over 20 years ago when my son was diagnosed with autism. Giving medications that alter the brain's chemistry to young children is as unthinkable now as it was then. I see this often as parents agonize over this dilemma in my psychology practice. I recommend this book wholeheartedly. It provides a balanced and scientific perspective that often the busy doctor doesn't have the time to do. Dr. Wilens expertise, simply and intelligently stated, provides the information that parents need to make informed decisions. This book can be a friend in a time of need. I am glad we have this book now.

The most important about this book is that specified the medication for the specific diagnosis, also give you all the information about it and what other symptons can you see with your primary diagnostic, to know if the kid need an extra medication or not.

Plenty of facts and figures

Obesity in America is of epidemic proportions. This fact is easily affirmed with a quick look on a crowded street. Research shows not only are more people overweight or obese, the overweight keep piling on the pounds. Sadly, this phenomenon is not just an adult problem. In the book SuperSized Kids How To Rescue Your Child From The Obesity Threat, Walt Larimore, M.D., and Sherri Flynt explore the medical consequences of obesity in today's youth and offer their medical experiences, both personal and clinical, as they attempt to tackle this worldwide crisis. Obesity does not discriminate. In fact, as this book so adeptly explains, obesity affects all persons, individually and as a society. The negative health impact is globally catastrophic in addition to financially devastating. Larimore and Flynt, with the use of reality-based case in points, attempt to explain the ravages this disease presents while offering thier medical expertise to assure us this trend can be reversed. With simple medical terminology and easy to follow lifestyle changes, these dedicated professionals make eradicating childhood obesity seem like a real possibility. While exposing probable causes of obesity, the authors are quick to point out modern luxuries and conveniences as the likeliest culprits. Except, instead of assigning blame to society and culture alone, they lay the responsibility and recovery at the feet of the individual. If the purpose of this book is to explain what obesity is, what it does, and how to prevent it, that goal was certainly attained. Larimore and Flynt give the reader every reason to be concerned and become proactive with the weight, current and future health of our next generation.

SuperSized Kids How To Rescue Your Child From The Obesity Threat is one of many books tackling the issue of childhood obesity available today. Written to appeal to parents and caregivers, it sometimes uses over the top scare tactics to get the reader's attention. Although easy to read, the layout is a bit distracting with the pages having sidebars of Recipe For Success, Fifty Ways to SuperSize Your Kids, and/or Food For Thought. Using real life stories to emphasize the subject matter is usually a positive tool used by authors. This book employs too many. Parents who have children struggling with weight want answers and solutions, not necessarily a support group of unknowns. They already know they belong to an ever growing population and if they are reading this book, they are making strides to escape from it. From a clinical viewpoint, this books supplies plenty of facts and figures. What it doesn't do, is make them interesting. With so many other books available with the same subject matter, I suggest looking for another.

This book has been an extremely useful resource for my family. "Food for Thought" and "Recipe for Success" highlight boxes made this book very easy reading to skim through and eye-opening stories about real people made it a book I read from cover to cover. I refer to the corresponding web site regularly. It is a real asset for my family's use of the book's eight-week plan to reduce our weight.

I was able to read this book before it came out to the public and do the program layed out in the back. I have to say, it is OUTSTANDING! This book was my last resort before giving up all together. My husband, son and I are all way overwieght and have been on the diet rollercoaster for years. I really was scared for my son, being only 6 years old, I felt it was up to me to get things under control. This book is not like anything you will ever read when it comes to diets. It dosent tell you to stop everything and eat just grass! It is laid out to where you do things a little at a time, like the first week all you just reduce the the amount of fast food you would normaly get, along with switching from a large plates to a small one. I am proud to say that by the end of the 8 week, we as a family lost 28 pounds, dont eat red meat, or drink caffeine at all, and have reduced our TV time,weeat as a family and we are much more active! If you want to save your childs life, and the heart ache of being overwieght or you want to improve your own life through better habits, All I can Say is GET THIS BOOK!! It will make a world of difference.

I love this book! I bought this book while I was pregnant with my first child and have found it indispensible. I find that it answers all of my questions and concerns, and the dosing guides for medication are really handy. Having it around has made me a more confident parent, and I'm not bothering the pediatrician with phone calls. I always give this book as a baby shower gift, and it is always much appreciated.

My wife is the Board President of a Pennsylvania adoption support group and she has recommended this book to all of the member families. It is especially relevant to those families that will travel abroad to adopt. Part 1 chapter 18 deals with exactly that topic and gives very sound tips to make traveling easier for all concerned. There is also a list of items both medical and non-medical to bring along-which is enormously helpful! Also, the royalties from the sale of this book go to a children's home in South Africa - what an admirable thing to do! This book is an excellent medical reference tool to anyone with children and an all-around winner!

Excellent resource for a variety of situations

This is an excellent, well-organized book for a variety of family situations. It is great for both run-of-the-mill parental concerns (from fever and flu to a knocked-out tooth), and it is equally informative for parents who are planning to travel with their children (whether out of town or out of the country). The section on international travel includes travel by immigrants to their country of origin as well as tourists. This is an exceptional resource for every family. There are also special notes for children who have chronic diseases or illnesses, such as those with diabetes or those in a wheelchair. Without being alarmist, the author highlights health concerns and how to address them. I found the book very thorough and informative.

We now buy this for every new parent we know as a baby gift. Its an excellent book.

As a mother of four (ages 14 to 8 months) and having no medical background, I have found this book to be a must. We travel a lot and I can carry this book in my purse or diaper bag. When at home, I keep it handy in the kitchen. The book is easy to use and easy to understand. It tells you how to prevent and treat illnesses as well as when to seek medical attention. The dosing tables for various medications can be used for all my kids. I have given several of these books as gifts.

Ananda's description of Sacred Bodywork is beautifully illustrated,explained and documented. She has captured the essence of this art and science.I can attest to this as I was with her in Thailand one of the many years that she studied with Pichest Boonhumme. She gathers in this book her years of studying, practicing and teaching Thai Yoga Massage. She combines her deep spiritual awareness with a detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology in a way that elucidates the therapeutic value of her craft. Its usefulness is enhanced when used with the video tapes although one could learn without the visual aide. I do use this book in my own teaching and practice and am appreciative of its authentic,detailed methodology.I highly recommend it.

Before I began my journey with Thai Yoga massage I looked at a number of books on the market. When I found this book I knew it was the right one for me. The text is easy to read and understand and the illustrations are clear. Miss. Apfelbaum is someone who is able to articulate a bodywork treatment that is complex, beautiful and above all healing. I would advise anyone who wishes to learn Thai Yoga massage to use this book as a tool. She also has a website, a video (that is great for when practicing at home) and does workshops.

This is a must have for every practitioner of Thai Massage. Ananda is a gifted master of Thai Massage and has done a great service sharing her vast knowledge of this healing art. The photographs showing the wide variety of moves unique to this modality are easy to understand. The accompanying text is well written with precise descriptions of the techniques, the anatomy and how it is affected, and valuable information about the Sen lines I have not found elsewhere. It is meticulous. I love this book and often use it for reference. Along with Asokananda's books, this is the best Thai Massage book available.

(I currently have the German version of this book, but I assume that the English one includes the same info.) I have just finished a course in Thai massage, and the traditional technique, as taught by Asokananda (aka Harald Brust), the man who brought Thai massage to the Western world, does NOT begin in the sitting position. Asokananda teaches the importance of beginning a massage at the feet, and then working upwards. From what I understand, this is important because Thai massage balances the energy in a body and the flow must go upwards through the chakras to the head. That said, this book includes some excellent photographs and the rest of its content is extremely helpful to anyone learning Thai massage. I think that Asokananda's book should still be the starting point for everyone, though.

Mary Manhein's "Trail of Bones" is a wonderful book that offers practical insight into the lives of real people in law enforcement, victims, evidence and everything in between. Mary does not have to be overly descriptive in her accounts because the importance relies on the the truth and not some sensationalized version of truth. I like to think that captivating people are writing their own stories. She seems to care a great deal about the effect her work has on others. She does not try to impress us with terminology that is purely mechanical. I think this creates greater credibility to her work. She is someone who really inspires others like me in law enforement to never stop caring about the victims.

I love the type of work that she does. She gives credit where credit is due and inspires her helpers to the highest level, while expecting them to perform there. I hope she will write more books with such compassion. An Avid Reader.

Very well written, concise and to the point. Gives an excellent idea of what to expect when you start looking for a job after residency. Explains the common scenarios and pitfalls to look out for. Definitely helped me ask better questions during interviews and assess the job opportunities in a much more objective manner; rather than going in wide eyed, the big hike in salary clouding your judgement.

The last section on physician recruitment agreement was particularly helpful for me as I didn't know they existed. Nobody talks about these things during residency training.Thanks partly to this book, I probably will be starting my own practice, based on a physician recruiting agreement.

The surprisingly good "The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Right Job after Residency" written by Koushik Shaw was published in late 2005. It is probably the most useful book for the physician job search that I have come across so far. It is short, concise, to the point (sometimes a bit too short), but it covers absolutely everything that is relevant from getting to know your personal preferences in your work life to determining where exactly you want to live and work, how to find a job, how to interview, and - kudos for this section - how to analyze a practice you are looking at, what questions to ask a potential employer to uncover risks and possible mismatches early. The author goes into details of analyzing benefits offered by an employer and negotiating a contract. He even goes into the basics of opening your own practice.

Overall very well written, in good style, very easy and quick to read and extremely informative. One smart book everybody should read at least once and at least one year before graduation.

The doctor looking for a job must solve five main problems:
1) Define practice matching criteria - avoid regretting a wrong choice;
2) Define a good practice - avoid joining a second-tier practice;
3) Plan the interview process - make sure you ask the key questions;
4) Understand necessary legalese - what must be covered in your contract and what should be skipped;
5) Negotiate your compensation and benefits.

Keep this book next to you during your job search - it helps solving all of your job search problems.

This book is roughly 135 pages. It covers a wide range of relatively complex ideas presented in a clear, well organized manner. Ever notice that when someone really understands something they don't need 300 pages to explain it?

This book challenged many of my ideas about my relationships with parents, my ex-wife, and my life choices (since childhood... I'm 36). I recommend it to anyone who is in this field or just on their own personal journey to have a greater understanding of men and their wounds / healing...

I am total James Hollis fan. I have now read four of his books and have found them liberating. Visit his website for a clue for why he is so effective - he is not 30 years of age with limited life experience. He commenced his training only after he completed another successful career in academia. Most would have been content to have lived the life he already had. He has the life skills and experience to help us all illuminate our lives.

The book concerns the burden of being a man, exposing some of the constricting myths that have made manhood so painful. It is a book about men but not necessarily only for men - my wife read it too and found it very moving. It is enriched by the signficant store of Hollis reading in poetry and literature. It is not an easy fix and like anything worthwhile requires your concentrated attention. Further, it is only a beginning rather than an end. Hollis says it himself when he quotes somewhere Jung's description of the psychoanalytical endeavour - it can provide insight but then there must come endurance and courage. You can have a vision of what you would like to be but then comes the fidelity to make that vision a reality.

I would recommend this book highly.

The sincere/passionate message of service and human accountability to help your fellow man, whether that man(or woman) is homeless or simply has not had the gifts that you may have may have recieved in life, is found throughout this wonderful and inspirational book. I have read it more than once, whenever I need some "perspective". I have asked my teenage children to also read this book as well. My daughter read and analyzed this book in her ninth-grade english class and I would applaud any teacher (high-school or college) to do the same. I guarantee teachers will get a reaction and hopefully that seed of conscience toward human accountability for service will be nourished. I am lucky to know Dr. Greer and the sincerity and integrity that he carries out his calling in life is real and can be validated by anyone who has met him.

I feel that he is an asset to the medical profession and writing profession and would sincerely like to see more work by him in literature. I would like to stresss here that I have read this book 4 times and still pickup different things while reading this text. The book was exellent. It made me really see what goes on with the homeless. Dr. Greer has struggled with giving the homeless medical service, as well as becoming their friend. The same way Dr. Greer has learned from the homeless, we all should learn from him and help him in this.

WHEN I PURCHASED THIS INSPIRATIONAL BOOK ON THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE, I NEVER SAW THE DAY WHEN I WOULD BE READING AND RE READING A BOOK FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. BOOK HAS IMPACT ON ANYONE INTERESTED IN SOCIETY AND IT'S ENHANCEMENT AND IMPROVEMENT. THERE SHOULD BE MORE OF DR. GREER'S KIND OF LITERATURE AND FEELINGS EXRESSED IN WRITING. THE TEXT IN GENERAL IS NOT HEAVY READING BUT HAS CONSIDERABLE EMOTION AND GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF AN INDIVIDUAL WITH A WHITE COAT SERVING HIS COMMUNITY ESPECIALLY WITH THE ENDORSEMENT OF HIS WIFE AND FAMILY. THE DOCTOR IS ALSO TRAINING DOCTORS HOW TO BECOME SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE MEDICAL PROFESSION SHOULD BE USING THIS TYPE OF BOOK AS A METHOD OF TEACHING AND EDUCATING OTHER DOCTORS WITHIN THEIR HALLS OF ACADEMIA. AS AM INSTRUCTOR AT AREA COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN BUSINESS, I WILL INCLUDE THIS BOOK ON MY SUGGESTED READ LIST FOR ETHICS IN BUSINESS AND AREAS WHERE THEY ARE DEALING WITH PEOPLE.

This book is so much more than the title led me to believe. This is not a book on infertility, although the lessons taught can certainly be applied to any area of a woman's life/health. It was easy to understand, and the way it is presented should be easily followed , even for a novice such as myself. I read this book cover to cover in one day. I could not put it down. Thank you to the author for finally giving us a book written at a level that can be heard and absorbed by all who pick up this gem.

An excellent survey of women's psychic and physical health issues.

Women can use diagnostic questionnaires, qi gong exercises, and guided meditations to help how elements of nature express themselves in mind and spirit in THE WAY OF THE FERTILE SOUL: TEN ANCIENT CHINESE SECRETS TO TAP INTO A WOMAN'S CREATIVE POTENTIAL, which provides tools for women on how to identify imbalances, reduce stress and uncover creativity. Chapters are packed with analysis of underlying energies and spirit sources and make for an excellent survey of women's psychic and physical health issues.

not what I was expecting

I bought this book after having read "the infertility cure" and I was expecting the same style: a practical, compassionate, infertility related book. "The way of the fertile soul", however, is a very "out there" kind of book, focused on the theory of ancient chinese medicine and no practical information. For example, it tells you that you have to stop having negative thoughts, but never bothers with practical advice on how to stop your brain from producing them.
I thought it was a good book to read if you want to expand your horizons and learn about something completely new (at least for us westerners), but it is by no means an instruction book on how to accomplish the things she is talking about. Most importantly it IS NOT A FERTILITY BOOK, at least not in the narrow sense of fertility as creating a baby.
For women like me, who want to buy it to expand the information they got from her other book (the infertility cure), I would say don't bother, it has nothing to offer you...

I love that she is both a medical doctor and has "crossed the pond" to embrace the ancient Chinese Secrets and Holistic lifestyle approach to living a healthy well rounded life!
She has a fresh and unique approach to getting the knowledge out there in a laypersons voice! Finally a doctor we can relate to!
Loving it!
Thank-you Randine Lewis

I believe that every great teacher's job is to shine light, not give heat to a person seeking information. Dr. Randine Lewis does just that by sharing her vast wisdom and interpretation of ancient Chinese methodology. She helps us to remember what we've forgotten and connect with our great potential for living with passion, joy, strength and unlimited possibility.
