I have bought this book at the begining of my pathology residency. Decision proved to be wise. It is concisely writen, language is plain and easy to understand. Photomicrographs are clear, subtitles are informative. But of course this book alone shall not make you master of the craft. The real value is shown, when using the book as the companion to daily practice. For novice path residents, combined with sound knowledge of general pathology it should make "pimping behind the scope" bearable.

Practical, well written and easy to read.

I enjoyed reading this edition of this book. As a pathologist in practice, I occasionally buy new editions of books as a review. Much better than going to a meeting for CME. The material in this book is particularily "real world" and directly applicable to everyday practice. Highly recommended also to new pathologist or those in training.

This is a concise and easy-to-understand overview of the topic. Unlike a lot of textbooks, this one can be read cover-to-cover without too much effort. Once you've read it, you're equipped to handle endometrial currettage specimens in your daily pathology practice. The only down-side is that many of the pictures are in black-and-white. But there are color photos as well. Overall, this is a wonderful book!

Great reference for EMBs!

I ordered this book when I needed to master the diagnostic criteria for a wide ranger of endometrial pathology commonly seen in biopsies. I was amazed by how easy a read it is, as well as how informative and useful the book has been. A little pricey, but definitely worth purchasing.

"The Patient in Room Nine Say's He's God" is an amusing and emotional roller-coaster from beginning to end. Dr. Profeta shares with the reader multiple accounts and short stories from his career as a seasoned Emergency Medicine Physician. He has a wonderful way of conveying meaningful messages that he has learned through these experiences that will leave you feeling enriched and enlightened. I highly recommend reading this book if you want to remember what is truly important in life.

As an Emergency doc as well, i know where he is coming from. I think its a good read for anyone-MD, RN, RT, EMT, Mr., Ms...
In a time where it is getting harder and less satisfying and less rewarding and less respected to be an MD, I think it's nice that at least one book shows how we really do and deeply care for those we treat.

I have been a fireman/paramedic for 10 years. It is really refreshing, energizing, and just freaking awesome to find someone who knows what we feel when going through situations, taking care of critical patients, and just life in general. Doc Profetta has truly become my hero. He may not know it but he really is. There are days I wonder why I do what I do, who am I, and what do I stand for. He truly exemplefies what a patient advocate, caretaker and most of all human being is and should be. Thank you, Louis from the bottom of my heart for this book. I am very honored to share in your life and journeys. Take care and looking forward to seeing you again in th ER and expanding my horizons with some Blatz. Troy

As an E.R. doc of more than a few years experience I found Doctor Profeta's book to be "right on the mark". His perceptions of emergency medicine and life in general shine with intelligence and compassion and are an extraordinarily intimate and incisive account of the realities of life and work in the E.R.

This is one of those books, that having read it once you can't forget it and it changes the way you see the world. Naessens life and theories are fascinating. Having read "World Without Cancer" I was not surprised by his being punished for curing cancer rather than getting a hero's welcome. It makes you wonder just how many cures are out there, being suppressed because it contradicts the powerful people's views of what can and cannot exist or how things work.

Just for the curious, there is a microscope out there now, the Ergonom 400 that comes close to what Naessen's did and will show the somatids that he saw.

The fact that that this is not available in print says a lot. It is extremely enlightening regarding the intellectual ignorance of our medical profession. The concept of increasing the ability of the immune system to heal the body should be number one on every medical checklist for every patient. Jason Winter's herbal tea contains numerous blood purifiers that purport to work toward the same end; blood purification to increase the ability of the immune system to heal the bodily malfunction. This is a total change in disease paradigm which could possibly put a lot of our medical profession on welfare, in addition to saving individuals from the cut, burn and poison paradigm.

Of all the important investigation that Christopher Bird performed during his career, The Life and Trials of Gaston Naessens is probably his most important work. I first became aware of Bird's book in 1990, and I have bought numerous copies over the years to give them to cancer and AIDS patients. His book is not a monumental piece of scholarship, but it tells one more story about what happens to medical pioneers. I have taken Bird's work much further, and I write at length about Naessens and the professional lineage that he is a marvelous part of. The story of Naessens work is probably the most important one in medicine today.

I have read "The Cancer Cure That Worked" by Barry Lymes which is the story of Dr. Royal R. Rife's work. Barry was assisted by Dr. Rife's partner, John Crane of San Diego. I spent a couple of afternoons with Mr. Crane in 1990, before he pased away. Because Mr. Crane was acting as a co-author the book is very accurate as to the actual truth and history of the events. Dr. Rife did have a technology that worked and was verified by the Medical Staff at University of Southern California, L.A. Dr. Milburn Johnson, the then Chief of the USC Medical Staff and President of the Los Angeles Medical Association rented the Scripps Ranch at La Jolla, California, where they were successful in curing, within 70 days, 18 terminally ill cancer patients - 100% cure rate! All with no side effects! They were then able to build approximately 20 "Rife Ray Beam" machines and Drs. were using them very succesfully, in fact, too successfully, until the persecution of Rife and his associates quashed the project and technology for a while. THIS BOOK IS ONE EVERY HUMAN ON THE PLANET SHOULD READ BECAUSE THE TECNOLOGY CURED NOT ONLY THE CANCER BUT OTHER PROBLEMS THE PATIENTS HAD. ANOTHER BOOK THAT IS A MUST is "The Secret of Life" by Georges Lakovsky, who used the same technology, but a different design of a machine he called "The Multiwave Oscillator" He also experienced very simalar successes as Dr. Rife. Mr. Lakovsky's book contains "before" and "after" photos. He was from Russia and did his work in France. Mr. Lakovsky was merely murdered, when he came to New York, to squash his technology. However, both technologies are available via the underground and I have personally used Rife's and witnessed it to cure cancer, epstien barr, clogging of the heart arteries, to correct eyesight, toothache and other ailments. A similar technology is explained in Hulda Clark's book "Curing All Diseases" I'm sure Mr. Bird's Book about Mr. Naessens should also be on the "must" list. ALL OF THESE BOOKS ARE A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT CURING SO CALLED "TERMINAL DISEASES."

I bought this book years ago when it was published in Canada under the title of THE GALILEO OF THE MICROSCOPE. I have met the late Chris Bird several times. This recreation of the trial of Gaston Naessens for Murder One is absolutely fascinating and a great read. I have a video of what Naessens sees in the live blood under his darkfield microscope. I have lent it a number of times to people with terminal illness who eventually contacted Naessens and now are completely healthy. This is a very important book about a living legend.---Phil Ratte' 61 going on 36

this book is about personal experiences that the author has had. she makes her experiences humerous. those that have experienced these symtoms know it isnt easy but you have to accept what you have. Its easy to identify with her and to see alot of your own symptoms or mine anyways. my husband is reading this book now so he can better understand me. I didnt think Id like this book but loved it. I reccomend this book to anyone with ms, their family and close friends. It is a good example of cognitive issues.

This book is very honest and funny! I have so enjoyed reading this as well as her other "coffee in the cereal". This book was funny, if a book about MS can be funny. I received my own diagnosis 18 yrs ago (when there really weren't any treatments available). I wish there'd been a book like this around then, because it shows that life goes on, and life is still good, and yet it doesn't pull any punches about how hard some of these symptoms are. The only question I have is whether all of Ms. Moorehead's cognitive challenges really are MS -- I was personally fine cognitively until I had kids, at which point my brain became overloaded with kid minutiae and quit functioning quite as well as it had before! This may or may not be MS, but I feel obliged to question it, because I don't want newly diagnosed patients to feel that all of these symptoms, particularly the cognitive symptoms, are inevitable. Having said this, I applaud Ms. Moorehead for sharing with us as she has. God bless her for the chapter on exercise. I thank her for her courage and her candor!

Just as "Coffee in my Cereal", was an honest open expression of being newly diagnosed, this look into the ongoing saga of living with a disease without a roadmap was a delight to read. Lorna has such a way of sharing that touches people in so many ways with humor and insight. It makes others with the disease say I am not alone.

I had the opportunity to meet John Fox, and I bought his two books then. I have since given them away and had to buy new copies. I found Poetic Medicine particularly useful when I taught high school English. The exercises helped my students deal with grief (that chapter is the best) and depression, and when I've used it, I have felt much better afterwards.

I think this should be a required book in every English teacher's personal library.

Review of Poetic Medicine-- an English teacher's view

As a literature student, I stayed as far away from poetry as I could. It wasn't just that I preferred fiction Poetry made me feel "less than". I didn't get it, and all the terms were confusing.

Now, as an English teacher in a community college, I get a similar response from my own students, most of whom haven't read much poetry, find it difficult or overwhelming, and don't really see the point.

Even sadder, neither of us have believed we can write poetry. Instead, we have believed that poetry is something only a chosen few can do, something that requires mastering a certain form or stanzaic structure or tapping into the Muse at some deeper level of creativity than most of us are capable of.

It's too bad that only recently have we had John Fox's book Poetic Medicine to show us what poetry really is or can be, a means not only of discovery or creative expression, but also of deep emotional and spiritual healing.

As Rachel Naomi Remen points out in the Preface, "Poetry is simply speaking the truth...and one of the best kept secrets in this technologically oriented culture is that simply speaking the truth heals."

Fox helps us get at our truth and thus heal, via a range of exercises that explore such territory as personal relationships, loss, illness, our connection to the earth, love and pain between parent and child, and the use of traditional poetic tools to merge the spiritual and creative.

These exercises are hugged on either side by text which combines Fox's personal insights and experience, both as a poet and poetry therapist, with concrete examples from his own life and those of former workshop participants. Poems from friends and students, as well as pertinent quotes from other writers, complement and enrich Fox's words.

But these words are not just for those of us who already fancy ourselves poets or writers. One of the great characteristics of this and Fox's other book, Finding What You Didn't Lose, is that Fox, like Natalie Goldberg in Writing Down the Bones and Susan Woolridge in Poemcrazy, give us permission to use writing to discover our own selves.

As in his workshops, Fox's kindness, spiritual depth, and true belief that poetry can help us express the inexpressible come through loud and clear in his tone. He is someone who listens deeply, pays attention to his inner world, and by example, helps us do the same.

There are many exercises in the book to inspire your poetry and many inspirational quotes. I've read it twice and intend to read again, as each time I read it different exercises and examples appeal to me. There is an exercise where you write down all the words that appeal to you in poems, to remind you to use them in your own works.

John Fox's POETIC MEDICINE: The Healing Art of Poem-Making is a user friendly book. You will find yourself circling phrases, underlining sentences, writing in the margins, completing the expertly crafted exercises and drifting in thought and reflection over poetry that touches your soul. The format also includes a wonderful collection of side bars with poetry and quotes by a wide variety of poets, writers and philosophers.

John's choice of chapter titles are in themselves poetic: "The Fragile Bond" -- expressing poems of pain and love between parent and child, "Landscapes of Relationships -- reflecting on intimacy, marriage and longing, "When God Sighs" -- making poems about loss, illness and death.

As an instructor of a poetry course for seniors, I used many of the exercises in POETIC MEDICINE. Participants who often came hesitantly to the class, were delighted when they discovered they were able to express themselves in poetic form. We also worked with some of the tools and basic elements of poetry which are nicely presented in the book.

POETIC MEDICINE is a book one could choose to use individually too. Expressing personal sorrow and love, poem-making to heal societal wounds, or celebrating earth and nature are all avenues one can explore within its pages.

Rachel Naomi Remen, MD says in the Preface, "Poetry is simply speaking truth", and John's unique book helps us to find truth and to create poems from the heart. It is good medicine for, as Dr. Remen says, "simply speaking truth heals."

A tragedy that such a brilliant interviewing and interrogation method cannot be used in Australia & the UK

I have twenty years of investigation experience in both law enforcement and the private sector. Never have I seen such a well written and insightful book on the art of investigative interviewing. Drawing on sound psychological theory and good old fashion practical nous; this book fully explains and provides an investigator with a solid foundation to work with, but the flexibility to move in any type of interview or interrogation setting. Sadly, Australian courts and those in the UK would render any confessions (criminal prosecutions) using this technique inadmissible, due to what some critics say is psychological thuggery. However, the technique has seen an increasing use in the private sector with excellent results, especially in the investigation of insurance fraud. Much like the Reid Technique, but more open and flowing - learn this excellent interviewing system and benefit from reading this investigative masterpiece.

I found this book to be very informative. A big part of my job is interview and interrogation. This book was able to put into context what I have already been doing for a number of years. I found that I was referencing the book in my head as I watched the people I was speaking with and knew by their actions how truthful or untruthful they were being. If this is the type of work you do the book is a very good read.

As a practitioner in the field of investigations, it has been my experience that there are two excellent choices for investigators when deciding on what type of style they will employ. W-Z (Wicklander Zulawski) and Reid. I "grew up" in the W-Z system and employed it with great success. I found it to be flexible and able to approach a wide variety of scenarios thanks to the variety of interview styles it employs. Unfortunately, I also noticed that the variety of interview styles it employs generates a steep learning curve, and an expert at one style may wander into an interview that needs to turn an unfamiliar direction and find themselves drowning as they try to keep up with the change in style. I recently attended the Reid seminar and joined their association immediately. Reid and W-Z differ in a distinct area. Reid interviews and interrogations are always the same, only the *theme* changes, whereas the entire interview or interrogation changes under W-Z. Under both systems, a mistake can be fatal, but the consistency of the Reid technique introduces fewer areas to make mistakes in, and allows quick mastery of the styles needed to successfully interview. Both systems provide good (but not perfect) methods of detecting dishonesty and between the two systems, W-Z is slightly more flexible. That said, if you want to become very good, very fast, Reid is a better choice. Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation is a good book, and serves as a great reference for those who have already attended a W-Z seminar. If you are looking to get into investigations, are newly hired into an investigations position or just want to know more about what to expect if you're ever investigated, this book is not a good choice for you. You should be familiar with phases of an investigation, interview and know the difference between an interview and an interrogation before you pick up this book or you could be easily confused. That said, if you are familiar with investigations, this is a good resource to have on hand for both review and pre-interview or interrogation preparation. 4/5 stars because Reid's Investigator Anthology provides easier to read and more concrete, repeatable insight and experience.

I really recommend this book to all women thinking about getting pregnant a bit later in life, you don't have to wait to 35. I had my daughter at age 33 two years ago and found it the most challenging thing I've ever done! I've just recommended the book to two friends going through the same thing. There are hundreds of pregnancy books but in this there's lots of really useful information about antenatal testing and how to choose a birth plan that I would have liked to have had before Maddy was born, and the authors talk to you in a very positive way. I give it five stars.JAYNE(and RICHARD)

I am a 39-year-old single woman with a 5-year-old son, and I desperately want another child in my life. Unlike so many books that focus on couples, and/or first-time moms, this book covers many, many scenarios (including my own) thoroughly, professionally, and with wonderful sensitivity.
The practical information is complete and accessible. It addresses most if not all of the potential complications and outcomes of an AMA pregnancy, while short vignettes about other women's experiences interspersed throughout the volume keep the reading very easy and interesting.

Gifted writers, Drs. Moore and de Costa draw upon their extensive medical training and the experiences of real women to provide older moms-to-be with valuable information. They focus on discussing the many issues and challenges older women may face when having a baby. While expecting my first at 37, I could not put this book down! It proved to be a great resource and easy to understand. It also helped me feel much more confident about making decisions surrounding my own pregnancy. I highly recommend it to anyone expecting or considering a baby ...a little later in life!

Mature motherhood and Parenting.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-16
The world of motherhood, most especially in developed countries, has undergone profound changes in the latter half of the 20th century. For the first time in history, many women elected to delay starting a family until they completed their education, had secured their professional path, found the right partner and/or had the financial means to nurture and educate a child. Many of us including myself know women who waited until after thirty or later to have their first baby and possibly some who continued having children into their forties. My mother was thirty-four when I was born and thirty-six when she gave birth to my younger brother. My maternal grandmother who lived in rural Texas continued having children until well into her forties and a first cousin remarried in her late thirties and found herself a mother at the age of thirty-seven and later, at thirty-nine.

In addition to massive social changes that have stopped, at least in some quarters, the finger-pointing at women who postponed motherhood until they were ready, advancements in the world of gynecology have made profound changes for women who were previously infertile. There are now myriad options including in vitro fertilization and egg implantation that allow women to give birth in their fifties and sixties and I'm sure a seventy-year-old mom may be just a few years away!

The doctors, Michele C. Moore, M.D. and Caroline M. de Costa, M.D., have added a fascinating new book to their "Mid Life, New Life" series. "Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five" is a must have for any mature woman considering giving birth or adopting an infant, a non-judgmental, beautifully written work by two medical professionals who have experienced late pregnancies themselves. Dr. Moore gave birth to her son at thirty-five while Dr. de Costa, after having already having five children, found herself changing the diapers of two very healthy and vibrant children in her early forties.

Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five looks at every aspect of mature parenting including available testing for the health of the mother, options for assistance with conception, adoption and a major concern for mature mothers-to-be, screening for chromosomal abnormalities. They also look at multiple births, a common occurrence with the increased use of fertility drugs to assist in motherhood. The book is written in clear but concise language that breaks down complicated medical procedures and statistical information into advice that any layman and most importantly, laywoman, can both comprehend and use. Doctors Moore and de Costa also give multiple scenarios based on their own case histories and personal experiences as mature moms. This book is a must-have for anyone contemplating parenting an infant after thirty-five whether through birth or adoption and will be just as useful for expectant fathers as it is for hopeful mothers.

This book is a life line to those of us who are concerned about developing dementia as we age. I think everyone should read it but especially if you have a loved one with dementia. The book outlines specific things you can do to delay the onset of dementia for years even to the point where you never develop significant symptoms in your life time. I feel like I can do something to stop memory problems and AD is not hopeless. Thanks Docs!!

If you are frightened by AD, read this book.

If you are interested in this book, you are probably over 50 and have a relative or friend who suffered from Alzheimer's disease (AD). You are probably frightened by even the faintest possibility of sharing such a fate. And, you want to inform yourself to do everything you can to prevent AD for yourself and loved ones.

This is a timely book for you to read. It is written by two medical experts. This book goes into greater detail in explaining the specific functions associated with the different lobes of the brain going much beyond the vapid left brain vs right brain concept. They also define all the different types of Dementia related to AD. They explain the four main neuronal causes of AD. They outline underlying medical conditions (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, etc..) that can ultimately affect the brain and cause AD. They clearly outline the genetic component of AD. If you carry one or more of the Apolipoprotein E4 or Presenilin genes, your risk of getting AD is up to 7.5 times greater than normal. But, the greatest risk of all is advanced age. On the very first page, the authors state that if you are 85, there is a 50% chance you will develop AD. I have read this statistic so often that it must be true. If you know otherwise let me know.

The authors' strategy on how to prevent AD is "prevention through delay." By taking fairly simple diagnostic and preventive measures one can reduce its risk of AD dramatically and can also defer the debilitating symptoms of AD by an average of 6 years per their own clinical observations. Those measures include taking annual memory tests with a neurologist by the time you are 50, taking fairly large doses of Vit. C & E, a small daily dose of Ibuprofen, and ginkgo biloba supplement. This is in addition to exercising 30 minutes a day, and following a diet with plenty of fish, fruits and vegetables.

In their view, the key is to catch any symptoms leading to AD early. For them AD is just like diabetes. It is extremely challenging to treat diabetes once you suffer kidney failure. Similarly, if you wait until you are in a nursing home to treat AD, it will be tough to do much. On the other hand, just like diabetes if one recognizes potential early symptoms AD can be prevented and deferred more successfully.

Armed with this information, this book should give you hope that one can actively take simple steps to reduce their risk of AD and defer the debilitating symptoms of advanced AD. Also, taking such steps will not only reduce your risk of AD but also your risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer (the two leading killers).

Essential reading for everyone over 50!

I have been waiting for 3 years for this book to come out and it meets and surpasses my expectations. Dr. Shankle treated my mother for Alzheimer's and is treating my father for other neurological problems. Concerned about getting Alzheimer's myself, this book is both reassuring and informative, offering concrete steps we can all take now to reduce our risk of dementia and suggesting memory screening annually for everyone over 50. The essential message of this book is that dementia, like any serious illness, is best treated through prevention and early intervention. The book includes a web site for free memory screening and other easy tests to do at home and includes a chapter on current research. There are valuable ideas on finding a good doctor and web sites to go to for more information.

What an excellent book. I am a RN have atteneded many seminars, read many books on aging and Alzheimers, work in psychiatry and gero psychiatry. However, I learned many things new reading this book. I am taking notes and plan to read it again to make sure I do not miss anything. What would happen to the Alzheimer's epidemic if we all followed the suggestions in this book.

I used the first ed. of this book to study for my MR registry exam & found it most helpful in understanding pulse sequences & MRI physics. The author(s) answer the questions in concise, easy to understand jargon that won't confuse the student, yet is technical enough for experienced technologist's to benefit. The second ed. is a continuation of this tried & true method of teaching & I most certainly would recommend this book, especially for anyone that is just learning MRI or getting ready to sit for the registry exam.

This book explains the beginnings and history of Reiki and gives examples of how to use the energy not only for healing the body, but getting rid of old guilts and fears, helping your plants grow, and much more. Such dramatic results have been seen with this method that more and more hospitals in the U.S. are having a Reiki Master on call to help in aiding the healing process of their patients. Even though the symbols are not shown, this book gives the author's tested examples of the results achieved using this universal energy that is available to all of us. I highly recommend this book.

Thank you Frank Arjava Petter for being daring and brave to bring the 'real' version of Dr. Usui's Reiki to the west. I had from the beginning a little difficulty to accept everything which was said about the 'grand-masters' and their likes. And in the past very little facts were given about Dr. Usui and mainly in a kind of fairy story tale. Now I can accept Reiki as I believe Reiki should be: free from major money making and available for all people who truly wish to heal themselves, others and the world. God and Reiki bless us all. B. I have studied Reiki and am a Reiki Master. I give this book to all of my Reiki students because it explains Reiki so simply and well. I especially like that it is informative without giving the impression that only the author's opinion of Reiki is important, and also that it sites Reiki's founder, Dr. Mikao Usui. It is clearly a tool to help one further one's understanding of Reiki.
