As a former law enforcement officer who served with a crime scene unit, an avid reader and contributing editor to a national law enforcement magazine, I am too frequently disappointed when a perfectly well told story falters over details of events, actions or other descriptions that are blatantly inaccurate. "Murder and Mayhem" is an excellenct source for writers who wish to avoid these mistakes.

Dr. Lyle not only provides answers to questions posed by writers accurately, his answers are presented in a manner that laymen (and espeically their prospective readers) can understand. The books added value is that the examples he uses are geared to specific literary situations.

This is a 'must have' addition to any mystery or cirme writer's reference shelf.

A writer's perspective, Dr. Lyle had a unique view of what is allowed and how to present it to a reader. This collection is composed of articles from a column first presented in Mystery Writers of America newsletter. It takes a little digging to unearth some specific detail and lacks an index.
When seeking specific information it is best to use what I've termed "the fingernail approach" -- run your finger down the page and soon or later you will find it. The book has some excellent line drawings for writers not versed in anatomy. A good place to start when searching for how to bump off your victim and confuse the investigation.
The style lends itself well to just taking it a chapter at a time to fill in gaps of knowledge before you go Net search. Remember in a investigation when confronting the killer, never ask a question you don't already know the answer to.

I have used this book numerous times since I purchased it new a year ago. If the answer I'm searching for isn't in this book, Lyle gives enough general information that I know what questions to ask my medical contacts when I touch base with them.

Definately worth full price, this book is packed with timely and detailed information mystery and crime writers need today.

As a medical professional, RN, I feel qualified to tell everyone that this book saved my life. After 12 years of Premarin, I had developed every side effect listed in this book. I thought I had a terrible disease process happening to my body. Then I asked myself " If a patient came to you with these symptoms, what would be the first thing you asked that patient." The answer was simple, "What medications are you taking?" The culprit was Premarin!!! And I now have a new lease on life. I take the Tri Est/ Progesterone discussed in this book and I feel 20 years younger, some say I look it too!

This is a MUST read book for every woman who is concerned about menopause and the decision to take hormones or not. We CAN have the best of both worlds: relief without the risk of cancer.

It should also be read by every doctor who writes HRT prescriptions for their patients.

I loved the book and found it to be very easy, exciting, informative reading, I was glued to every page.

Buy it, read it, and pass it on to all of your friends and doctors! I just ordered a second copy for my doctor as a gift.

I've read six books on menopause and "the Naturals" and I think it is the best. This book has the most information presented in the most concise format. There is much useful "hands on" information about diet, exercise and the use of natural progesterone. If I could buy only 1 book on the subject, this would be it.

I am a 53 year old woman who underwent menopause at 43, and since I still have my uterus, I struggled with Premarin and it's ugly sidekick Provera for almost 8 years. I even tried Dr. John Lee's Progesterone alternative, but to no avail. Then finally, a female friend suggested that I go see her naturopathic MD here in Scottsdale. She put me on the "naturals" and within a few months I was feeling better than I had in years. With just a couple more "tweaks" I was feeling great, and mentally I knew I was now free from all the looming fears of HRT induced breast or uterine cancer.

I have (and would) recommend this book to any woman who will listen to it's message. It is a thorough, direct and comprehensive alternative to horse pee and PMS (as we "natural women" refer to our previous regimen) and it is my belief that these are the hormone replacements of the future. And, thanks to Laux and Conrad, some of us have it now!

Another great book by James Scott Bell

Don't let the strange title throw you off, this is a great book by one of the best Christian thriller writers of today, James Scott Bell. Janice Ramsey is shopping in a grocery store when a man runs by and steals her purse. AFter briefly chasing after the man, she returns to find that her ten-year old daughter, Lauren, has been kidnapped. Janice is convinced her ex-husband, Sam, is behind it because they are involved in a custody battle.

A bounty hunter named Jed is searching for the killers of his brother Sterling Brown. Jed finds the man who killed Sterling and finds a connection to Sam on the killer's computer. Jed hooks up with Janice and they begin a trip to the East Coast to try and find the truth behind Laurnen's dissappearance and Sterling's killer.

That "thruth" is Bentley Davis, a Harvard Professor with designs on controlling the world through genetic engineering. Davis has designed a gene, the Nephelim seed, that can cause people to lose all emotional thought and to even doubt the existence of God.

The novel is basically a race agains time. Can Janice and Jed rescue Lauren before it is too late? While the plot was engaging, I found the characters to be what kept me turning the pages. Janice has faced the ultimate horror, having a child kidnapped. Lauren is the innocent child who constantly prays to God for guidance. Jed has fallen away from God after he felt God abandoned him in times of trouble. Bentley Davis hates God and thinks he has found the answer: an injection that takes away the need for God and emotion-based thought.

The religious message of the novel is hit and miss. Bell hints at spiritual warfare covered in his later novels. Characters also send mixed messages about why bad things happen. In one scene, when her father is threatening her, Lauren wonders "Why is God letting this happen?"

This is a fun novel full of riveting characters that have the depth needed to make this a page turner. Fans of Bell shouldn't hesitate to read this book.

The Nephilim Seed is one wild ride through Scott Bell's illustrious imagination. I gave it 5 stars because I couldn't think of anything I'd rather do than race to the finish line of The Nephilim Seed. I was hooked on the first page; swept into every scene by characters so well imagined I'll remember them forever. I wanted to protect Lauren, hunt down her father, encourage her mother and go to the police academy so I could personally arrest Davis and all those involved in UniGen. If this isn't a movie--I don't know what is. Man! James, where's the sequel? Facsinating! P.S. Circumstancial Evidence, Blind Justice are great reads too.

This was my first experience with James Scott Bell. If his other novels are as exciting and fast-paced as this one, then it will definitely not be my last.

As a former fan of James Byron Huggins who has been turned off by his recent nonsense which has been passed off as readable fiction, I was refreshed to read a Christian sci-fi thriller that was believable, enjoyable, and lacking in space wasting sentimental drivel.

The idea of the Nephilim has intrigued me ever since my first year Biblical Hebrew class when we studied Genesis 6 and the idea of the Nephilim. A friend and I in that class discussed a Christian sci-fi novel based upon the Nephilim, but not in the manner in which Bell did it here.

"The Nephilim Seed" touched moral themes which are ever encroaching on our post-modern society, and I believe that Bell addresses those issues in a laudable, conservative manner. As science and technology continue in their present course, Christian values and morals will likewise continue to be attacked as outdated.

Jim Bell has knocked one over the far fences with this one! The characters fairly leap off the pages and the plot is, as in all of Jim's books, relentless. His theme is torn right off today's headlines as he has explored areas new to Christian fiction. Can a movie treatment be far behind? Get the "Seed", and bring it home. But a caveat...prepare to lose sleep for a few nights; it's that good.
So move over, Grisham..."The Nephilim Seed" cooks!

I'm blown away. I just finished reading it seconds ago. I am completely blown away. "Christian Futuristic Mystery/Thriller" is how I'd classify it.

you know how you listen to a milestone of a music CD (something by Elvis, the Beetles, Led Zepplin, Iron Maiden, or Metallica - you know, something of that nature) and you wish you could give it about 10,000 stars on amazon? I wish I could do that with this book.

I'm not about to tell you about the story itself. I'll tell you that this author utilizes every word in the English language that he features in this book to perfection. The reader is left shocked countless times (ex. page 360 of the 375 page version - this shock is about as big as if... ... I really can't think of anything on that scale). I compare the first 90 or so pages to a "combination of My Cousin Vinny and Big Daddy." That'll give you a sense of what the plot is about. But the aforementioned page 360 is one of the biggest shocks I've ever seen in my life, turning a phrase said often throughout the book into... not what the ending deals with.

One surprise after another. Written to perfection. The last book I read was one a lot like this, so as I was on about page 40 of this book I was saying to myself "good move, moron - read the same kind of book back to back and automatically, the 2nd one sucks." based on what you've read thus far of this review, you think that's what happened?

Humor is intertwined in a way I've never seen it before. I never burst out laughing at the wrong times, though. In other words, if there's a gun in the current scene, expect dead seriousness. But if the characters are on a boat ride (something that actually DOESN'T happen in this book), expect to fall on the floor laughing.

Its a story for the emotional just as much as it is a story for one who's passion can drive them into dangerous situations (and I mean DANGEROUS), one who is interested in the everlasting battle between Christians and evolutionists, or someone who just wants a book to read. as long as you don't think you'd be offended by the Christianism (but you're not exactly going to feel a dying urge to become super-religious upon completion of the book, though such thoughts may appear suggested, particularly at the very (somehow and somewhat happy) ending.

bottom line: ask me if you think you should read this book and other than the hesitation with the whole Christian aspect, I will tell you: "Go read it." There's a lot more than just Christianness in this book.

This book is absolutely awesome! It begins by explaining what alternative medicine is, why pets get sick, and making the switch from allopathic to holistic medicine. It also describes, from A to Z, common ailments and how various vets treat them. There are snippets about how pets treat themselves for certain diseases, when to call the vet, and anecdotes pertaining to the ailment. It also has an extensive alternative healing resource guide.

I am in the process of learning about holistic health care for my 2 lhasa apsos and have recently purchased a few books on the subject. I started one book and set it aside to finish later. I picked up "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and couldn't put it down until I was finished! I was so impressed with the layout of such a large amount of information. This book is chock-full of great information and it is presented in a terrific format giving the read first the "The Signs" of the condition, then "The Cause" and the "The Solutions". The solutions can be numerous with the author offering different suggestions and not seeming to be biased towards any one particular holistic remedy. Directions are very clear, concise, and easily understood. Some choices mentioned are natural diet (which seems to be the first and obvious step towards better health care for an animal), natural supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, aroma-therapy, magnet therapy, accupressure with diagrams shown, and of course, recommendations to call your vet to assist in dosage. Although you feel there is alot to learn, the information is broken down so well, it is easy to retain alot of what you read in the first go around with this book. I am sure I will be picking it up time and time again while working to get my dogs in the best possible health. Also included are some behavior problems. I guarantee you will learn some new and valuable information!

A friend knew how my aging dog, Nina, was quite ill and that my family was not planning a second surgery, as she might not survive the operation and, besides, the mass on her liver had grown back in a year. She gave me a copy of this wonderful book, which gives options for health care. Impressed with the book, I ordered many copies and have given a copy to others who love their dogs and cats and want an option to drugs or surgery. Here it is! Nina's had extra time with her family and I have a new respect for natural healing, for pets and for people. You should buy several copies of "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats", so you may share the love.

I must say, I bought this because I thought it seemed like a fun gimmick and I liked the show, but the recipes are outstanding. I grew up in test kitchens and I can say that the lamb stew is the best I've ever had-- great borscht, too. Lightfeather Duncan's mashed potatoes are the hit of Thanksgiving... but heed their warning about not using the red horseradish, as pink potatoes clash with holiday decor. Eggs Florentine recipe is also noteworthy; love the pungency of the gruyere.

If you loved the show, this is a must. Allegedly written by Ruth-Anne Miller, Cicely's sage and owner of the general store, the book contains wry observations on the folks and life in Cicely, memories of the show and the food served and discussed on it. Surprisingly, the recipes are good - very good ... at least the ones I'd tried. I'm especially fond of the eggplant parmegian recipe. Guess I'll have to take better care of the book now that it's collectible!!

This cookbook is so much fun and a must for any northern exposure fan. All the recipes you heard mentioned from Adam and the zabaglione he whipped up for Eve on their first date to the Cassoulet Chris had at the monastery. It has a little intro to each recipe done in character by the character. There are simple funny recipes like Joel's Jell-O and Marilynn's potatoes and more detailed ones like Adam's and Maurice's. A fun read and walk down memory lane for any northern exposure fan.

Hillary Johnson's fascinating book, first touched upon in her article in Rolling Stone is a compelling read. The poor response by the CDC and the NIH to an epidemic that has now affected more lives than both AIDS and Lung Cancer is tragic. Ms. Johnson's beautifully woven story (though at times technical) would make for a very moving film in the tradition of And the Band Played On.

The author does an outstanding job of revealing how some of our most "respected" agencies in western medicine attempt to deal with what they can not define, despite what the patient says. Through constant shifts in focus, we are shown how several different groups deal with this syndrome. The writings illicit a tremendous amount of rage at the incompetence, pain at the ignorance, and confusion in the beurocratic anchors. This book reads like a mystery, and keeps you intrigued until the last page. It concludes like the reality of the search for this anomoly- with no 'pat' answers.

I read this book when it first came out. I would highly recommend it to any health care professional, any sufferer, or any relative of any sufferer. Society has come a long way over the years. Around 1990 I took a copy of one Dr. Jay Goldstein's books on chronic fatigue to a lecture on another subject. One of the other attendees picked it up, read the title, and disdainfully tossed in back on the table declaring, "Chronic fatigue? There is no such thing. It's only depression." On the other hand, myths are still all too common.

Back to this book. It leaves me dumbfounded how many of the issues clearly dealt with in this book are still reported incorrectly. Example: Epstein-Barr virus. It has widely been reported that since EB virus does not appear in clusters/epidemics, and that antibodies are present in a very high percent of the population, attributing chronic-fatigue to and EBV outbreak is, well, wrong. And that the doctor(s) should have known that.

However, in the book is it made clear that the doctors at Incline Village where an outbreak occured did know that. So when one of the doctors started seeing many of his patient's showing up with positive blood tests for EBV, he sent some samples to a researcher. The researcher found an antibody pattern that was not indicative of new infections, but rather of a recurrence or reactivation of a prior infection. This was a pattern the researcher had never seen before, and implied another cause, possible a weakening of the immune system. But not an epidemic of new EBV cases. By the way, that also argues against the assertion some have made that EBV is a possible cause, although it should be ruled out clinically.

The book is replete with many stories and issues, that differ remarkably from what is commonly reported about this issue.

One final chilling note. In the book dozens sufferers are introduced, some in depth, some obliquely. In an annex at the end of the book, the is a short follow up on many of the sufferers. What is chilling is how many have died.

Anyone new to the illness should have this book in their library, even if it is just used for references.

This book really gives you an understanding of how and why ME has been stigmatized, ridiculed and ignored as much as it has. It makes it very clear that it was not a mistake or an oversight at all but that it was in fact utterly deliberate. The pure stupidity and lack of basic human compassion involved is astounding. It's important to know how we've ended up in this mess so we can see how we might get ourselves out I think. It's also important that we not underestimate how low these people will go - its lower than you could even imagine.

A must read if you are well enough to tackle such a long non-fiction book, it'll just blow your mind and really fire you up about how badly we have all been treated historically and the...well you'd have to call them evil, people behind it all. A fantastic book to fire up your activism urges.

This book is not only beautiful to look at, but contains a terrific sampling of various techniques. Enough information is given to allow the reader to attempt different techniques and expand their skill set, or to cross a specific technique off their list for the present without a huge investment in time and materials.
Highly Recommended!

Enjoyed the artists comments as to their reasoning while they create and why they came to create as they do. Excellent photos demonstrate techniques. Thank you for a good reference book.

I would first recommend that you read her first book Asian Health Secrets. It is a different way of thinking but from my first hand experience - very healing. I also think that you should know that winghopfung.com has a weekly letter by Letha and has alot of the herbal products available that are mentioned in the book.

I read Asian Health Secrets, and then couldn't wait for her next book to come out--and I was not disappointed. This book dispells all the myths about the "normal" way to age, and instead, shows you a whole new way of looking at yourself. And if you need proof that these methods work, try it and see how you feel. And then take a look at how great Letha Hadady looks. She looks about 25 years old.

This is an excellent book for all critical care nurses. It is succinct and comprehensive at the same time. It explains things easily and lets you know what you need to know regarding issues such as DKA, etc. It even has a section on different drug calculations when hanging a drip (ie dobutamine), etc. A must have reference for every critical care nurse!

It's the best critical care quick reference available.

What can I say? The other reviewers have said it all. Anything that I wrote would be simply reiterating what has already been said. This book is thorough, concise, easy to read and reference, and covers all the body systems pertinent to critical care interventions. It should be considered a mandatory addition to any serious critical care nurse's library.
