I am a big proponent of alternative and natural medicine. I think that every body possesses the ability to heal itself and it is only to up to each individual to discover and tap into that ability. Western medicine is necessary in emergency situations, but it seems that it is only in its infancy when in comes to chronic diseases and disorders. It's about time individuals like Rachel started sharing their gifts and abilities. Rachel's book gives us a unique insight into the mind and techniques of a healer, knowledge very important for physical, mental, and spiritual health, but especially in those chronic, incurable (by western medicine's standards) disorders and diseases.
Great book for those eager to learn and those ready to create their destiny.

"Create Your Own Destiny! Spiritual Path to Success" is a unique work
This book acts as an enlightening experience that the reader can use in his quest for the truth. No individual can truly heal until he has learned how to live with natural laws.
This book has extremely helpful information and guides readers to action. The author shares with the reader her secret knowledge, unveiling all details of her craft, calling for cooperation. The book depicts her trust and deep sympathy for people. She has the most sincere desire to help and - like a child - opens her soul, not just depth of her skill and art, confident her trust is not misplaced. .
"Create Your Own Destiny!" encourages readers to reconstruct their lives by reconsidering and changing their outlook. The author gives practical advice that is easy to follow that will help any person who wishes to be cleared spiritually and physically to live life to its fullest.
Through her techniques she helped me to empower myself.
I was fascinated by this book and this book should be on the desk of everyone for guidance and assistance.
I highly recommend this book!

I love this book. It brings the wisdom into everyday life. Simple, nondogmatic, loving, and practical.
This is one of the single best books I've seen for mind, body and spirit. Clear and concise, it exudes kindness, gentleness, and love. And it has greatly helped me and many people I know in dealing with every aspect of life.

I was fascinated by Rachel's personal accounts of her past healings. I never realized all that is involved in spiritual healing and how Rachel's experiences have taught her so much knowledge of the body, spirit, mind and the entire medical field. She is truly a professional in this field.
I've read a couple other books about spiritual healing and they have similar techniques and outcomes which relieved skepticism I had towards the spirtual healing practice. Futhermore, I recently attended a presentation by Rachel and I volunteered for a brief body scan. I was amazed at the energy I felt by her simply placing her palms near to my body. I was a skeptic before, but no longer.
I was also impressed by all the different spiritual techniques she covers from acupuncture to reading of the palms. Her illustrations and descriptions are easy to follow and understand and will make for a good reference.

It is VERY nice book. Especially for medical students and residents.
You can understand from detail to basic of diseases. With this book, you know how to approach and make your list of differential diagnosis.
I worked for infectious disease patients for a while, and this book was very useful because you can get the general knowledge not only about infectious diseases but also general internal medicine, skin lesions, bone diseases, and so on. I especially recommend the chart of antibiotics(Chart 37). I like this book because we can also get the update etiology of diseases. So nice.

I really appreciate the fact that this book is research based and advocates complementary medicine. I feel it really helped me sort through treatment options and show me how I could help my mother after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She's currently doing cyberknife therapy, and now I know which supplements can help her with radiation therapy, and what I need to give her now (I chose curcumin or quecertin, vitamins, Ip6 and Maitake mushrooms, and am a Reiki practicioner so I do Reiki on her every night. Even Reiki is mentioned in the book!).
If you're trying to figure out what to do, get this book first. It's also approved by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, which practice allopathic along with naturopathic medicine in treating cancer.

Joshua Rosenthal's book "Integrative Nutrition" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to explore and discover the truth about giant food corporations and pharmaceutical companies and how they affect the American diet; the strengths and weaknesses of the popular diets in the market; the reasons why we should listen to our body when we crave for certain foods, the Mind Body Spirit connection, healthy recipes and much, much more. Integrative nutrition was recommended to me by my nutritionist who attended the integrative nutrition schooling up in NY. The book compares all diet trends - shows you the good and bad in all...as well as supports the reader lovingly in their journey for overall good health of mind/body and spirit. This is no quick fix diet book. This is for those who want it all!

If you are a doctor, physical therapist, massage or bodywork therapist of any kind with an appetite for in depth analysis and understanding of the human response to touch, this book is a MUST HAVE for you. It's technical and detailed, and it is also ground breaking, eye-opening and very exciting.
Juhan covers the topic of the human response to touch from the micro-cellular level through to system responses all the way to the origins of the body/mind split in western philosphy and the consequences of pharmaceutical dominance in health care on touch therapies. He introduces many new perspectives that bring a rich vitality to anatomy. He shows the interactivity - the interconnectedness - the interdependence of all aspects of the human body, mind and being. He presents some of the latest theories about how the body mind are integrated and communicate - Candace Pert's molecules of emotion.
Not only is Juhan's research fascinating and valuable to body workers, but also his method of inquiry, the questions he asks, and how he asks and seeks to answer them, are also very educational - modeling ways we can pursue the investigation ourselves.
Here are a few examples of the kind of insight that Juhan offers in the Third Edition:
Page 17
"This personal, sensory engagement with the self does not spring from a rebellion against scientific authority, but rather from a realization of the present inadequacy of that authority's conception of reality, a realization that is not contrived for the purpose of debate, but which is forced upon [us] by [our] own painful circumstances."
"When the conceptions of reality that we maintain do not square with the things we are experiencing, it is not because we are flawed or because our experiences are wrong, but because our conceptions cannot contain all of the facts as we perceive them. And there is no constructive way out of this crisis but to enlarge our sense of reality to include our actual experiences."
Page 142
"The goal of bodywork should not be to impose universalized standards of posture and movement upon an individual, but rather to help the individual to cultivate the mental awareness and the physical flexibility to continually adapt to the changing needs of the moment."
Page 184
"Muscles that have fallen into disuse and flaccidity just don't provide enough pumping action for these intercellular fluids to adequately feed and bathe the nerve cells, and so the general strength of their functions is diminished."
Page 412
"Subjective and objective are not two distinct ways I have of viewing reality; they are two sides of a continuous feedback loop which together make up that reality. How completely I sense my body and how I feel about it has everything to do with the particular course of events going on within it."

In the field of mental health there are so many research-based, self-help, anectdotal, and other types of books to assist therapists in improving their skills. This book is different and delightfully so as it is written in a diary-form but with warm guidance. Pipher's understanding of the healing power of therapy and how connecting with clients is essential is well-written. This book is from Pipher's role as a mentor to a blossoming therapist, but even experienced therapists will enjoy the way she conceptualizes clients' concerns. Pipher clearly sees therapy as one way to make positive changes in the world and that is inspiring to all of us who do this work.

A Wonderful Historical & Emotional Memoir

Review Date: 2007-11-12
This is a beautifully written and often moving memoir of a woman whose life and career spans several continents, intersects with history at many points, and settles in the profession of medicine in the Midwest, especially the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She was born in pre-Communist China to a foreign service officer in the national government of Chiang Kaishek; grew up in several Chinese cities and spent four childhood years in Cuba; barely escaped the Japanese invasion of Nanjing; and ended up attending college at Mount Holyoke, and medical school at the University of Michigan. After major stops in Detroit, Dublin, and Minneapolis, she landed at the Mayo Clinic, as a staff physician in rheumatology. The book is finely observed and carefully written from first to last, with detailed evocations especially of her childhood in China and Cuba, and as a teenager at the Blackstone School for Girls in Blackstone, Virginia in the segregated South in the early 1940's. (Once she was told by a bus driver to sit in the back of the bus. "But I'm not black, I'm Chinese," she said. After scrutinizing her, the bus driver relented and let her sit in the front.) Interwoven through these travels is the emotional biography of an exile finding a home in place after place, trying to make sense of new customs, new ideas, and new people each step of the way. Describing her studies of Christianity, Buddhism, Tai Chi and Yoga in book's last chapters, the author shows how adventurous travel can cross not only geographical but spiritual boundaries.

It is the charming account of a girl, born and raised in a landlord family, who, after immigrating to the United States, sought and achieved excellence in clinical medicine.

What a find! Nearly the whole history of twentieth century relations between China and the USA encapsulated in the story of the life of a Chinese-American woman doctor at the matchless Mayo Clinic. Her fine character pays homage to the efforts of the Protestant missionaries who were so active in China before the Communists took over. Her earnest goodness shines through her writing as she meets struggle and tragedy and ultimate mastery of life. Her devotion to medicine is an inspiration. Highly recommended.

I learned about this book after reading about Dr Castaldo's son's accident in Catholic Digest. I ordered the book and once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. A must read book. I'm passing it on to my daughter who is going into the medical field. It renews one's faith in doctors who really do care. Lorraine Schoedler, Allentown, PA

I bought this book after reading an excerpt of the story about David in Catholic Digest. This is a very enjoyable book and definitely should be read by health care providers.

I must caution readers that this review may be biased - Dr. John Castaldo has been a close personal friend for over 20 years.
To me the book is more than stories of love, faith and healing. It's the story of two human beings who, as they become more skilled as physicians, struggle to become more human, in a profession that is simultaneously life-and-death, and often dehumanizing.
I visited John daily while his son David was in the hospital. I remember the hundreds of cuts on David's body, and the grief expressed by John and his family. But I also remember his determination that David would recover.
This is not a superstar ("look at all the great things I did") type of book. There are successes mixed with sadness, and perhaps failures. But that is the human drama of life. The book is worth buying and reading.

In this book, two neurologists recall memorable cases in their practices and events in their personal lives where their patients taught them valuable lessons about life. The stories reveal very human and humorous aspects of these eminent physicians' personalities. Some of the accounts are sad, others almost incredible, and still others will have you chuckling and shaking your head. In many chapters, the spotlight shines on the patients - not on the doctors. This is a unique book with stories you will want to share with family and friends.

The Garretts pull from their experieces from the "real world," as well as their healings and practical experience with the Cherokee to give us excellent starting points in helping ourselves and others. For such a thin book, there is a lot of advice hidden in the stories and accounts, if you know what to look for.

My attention to the book brought not the title but the introduction of the author intrigued me to it. Began to read, I penetrated into each chapter with the big interest because understood, that the book is written by the person having an enormous life experience and knowledge, not speaking about authors gift. I absolutely felt, that the author knows, about what she writes, and that she transfers to mankind knowledge with open heart and love. Each one chapter is a source of eternal wisdom.
Expression and the title of the book: "Create Your Own Destiny!" are not simple words, but they giving a significant offer: Everyone born with the right of freedom of a choice to create own destiny.
I was glad I bought this book.
