The context of the book definately meets my expectations. The book provides a complete overview of PACs I am a bit concerned as to to quality of the book. The binding has already started to become loose in one section. the book has not been abused in any way. Carried in a briefcase and read at home. May be just this copy.

This book is a real piece of research, and deserves to be placed as a reference tool along with any social sceince collection.

Researchers will find paths for further study.

Students in LIS will find illustrations of content management in traditional social science libraries.

Internet librarians can improve this study to show India's place in the emerging information society.

What can Perl be used for in bioinformatics?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This is a brief introduction to some of the things that one can do in Perl; it lacks scope and has few useful examples, but gives a flavor for what is available. It needs some programming experience to get much out of it.

The book for the programming in bioinformatics...

If you are computer scince reseacher and very interested in BioInformation or Computational Biology, you can get very much useful things from this book.

At best, an extremely pricey handbook

Although the editorial review claims that Perl for Bioinformatics "introduces Perl to the bio/computer scientist interested in or working in bioinformatics," this is really a bit of a misnomer. While it does contain a decent quantity of useful, relevant reference information for a bioinformatics student, the (dollar) price tag is far too high. Furthermore, no real introduction to Perl is found in the book, save the preface in pp. 4-5--that is to say, some basic knowledge of Perl will be an absolute requirement. As a student, I would personally lean toward any of the excellent O'Reilly bioinformatics and/or Perl books myself; they are well written, contain much of the same relevant information with additional explanations, and at a much lower price per page. Bottom line: You may find Perl for Bioinformatics useful as a pocket reference guide, but it is probably not worth the astronomical price.

too short to be really useful

Look at other general intro books on Perl, and ask yourself: how much useful stuff can any human cram into a 43-page book for beginners? The answer is: not much. I see very little sense in investing in this tiny book.

The worst, most useless book EVER!

Do not buy this book. It was required for one of my courses and it is the most boring, useless piece of literature I have ever read in my life. It is poorly written and impossible to understand.

Easy to understand

I had recently joined the nursing informatics team. As a newbie with no qualification on this job whatsoever, this book had helped me in understanding the nature of this career. Good for beginners.

But I thought it was boring & not all that informative. I struggled through it because I was taking a class on CIS. Surely, there's something better out there.

Not worth the money

For a book titled Clinical Information Systems, you would think that would be the contents. Unfortunately it is not. Old re-hashed arguments about CPOE, a non-informative review of security, a little touch of imaging IT and that's about it. Nary a mention of clinical systems such as laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, clinical documentation, etc. A rather disappointing product. I have serious reservations about the rest of the texts from this publisher after reading this publication.

Very Superficial
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-06
This is a very simple introduction to computers in medicine geared to an undergraduate student who knows how to turn a computer on, and not much more. It does deal with information technology, but at such a superficial level as to be useless to anyone already in medicine. Indeed at a couple of points in the text it addresses the reader as "future healthcare professional". If you are a current healthcare professional trying to bring medicine into the 21st century, this book is not for you. It will not help you understand EHR's, e-prescribing, networks or true security concerns.

At best, a cursory exploration of the issue

Burke and Weill are correct that information technology is a highly pervasive and important issue that will change the face of health care in the next few years. It already has. As a health care professional in the technology area, I have seen great strides (and blunders) in the area of computers and health care.

It is hard, however, to understand Burke and Weill's intent of writing this book. It is thin and addresses the mere surface of each issue. I suppose it is for people who are entirely computer illiterate - I mean, it describes what a keyboard is, what a mouse does, and a brief definition of the Internet. If people don't already know about these then why explain health informatics and MRI scanners? More information could have been put in the book if more knowledge had been assumed; if the health professional does not have this knowledge, then they need to take some more basic courses. This book, in trying to start with the ultra-simple, then moving to the incredibly complex issue of digital imaging in just over 200 pages, it renders itself almost useless.

On a positive note, the chapter on computers in surgery was helpful and somewhat well done, given the meager space it was given. The best aspect of the book was the darkened "In the News" sections.

I would suggest books on Health Informatics and Medical Imaging (after getting a hold on computer basics) rather than purchase this book.

Out of date solutions.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-09
The networking solutions provided by these authors very clearly illustrate the public sector's misuse and misunderstanding of information production, delivery, and presentation technologies.

The focus of most contributors is on technologies and concepts that were even out of date at the time of publication. There is little or no mention of data driven, decision support using spatial analysis of community specific health needs, or data and information preparation for community health analysis. In short, the book takes a, largely, traditional public sector IT approach to community health networks, which does not usually focus answering the questions of -- what information is needed, how will the information be used, how and to whom should the information be delivered, how will data be organized (architected) so that community health assets can be compared, ... and so on.

Very Poor Book on the Field of Healthcare KM
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-28
I purchased this book with the hopes of shedding more insight into the field of healthcare KM since I serve as a clinical applications manager at a regional hospital. The book had several chapters that didn't even deal with KM. I finished several chapters believing I could have done just as well writing the chapter myself had I been tasked to conduct a high school or college research paper on that particular subject of the chapter.

Considering the fact that the book cost $70 made it even more of a disappointment. If you want more thorough background on healthcare KM and potential means of application in a healthcare environment, you're better off doing your own web research. If I had the opportunity, I'd request a full refund. Very poor book.
