The fun thing about this book is that it has everthing you learned (or should have learned) getting your Engineering degree. It's all there! It usually takes some time to sort thru what all the vaiables mean, and often you have to flip between look up tables, but it is so charming to find EVERYTHING in one spot in a book so small you can carry it in your front pocket.

Well-written, smart, and insightful! I'm not a teen but was captivated. The easy writing style makes it a fast read, and the issues of religion and finding one's identity are relevant to all ages. This is a must read.

This book will be of interest to adults as well as teens. The intelligent design/evolution debate is a relevant topic in our society, and this book presents some interesting thoughts about the controversy. It's quick, easy, and definitely worth reading.

Mena knew her first day of High school would be bad. But who could predict this? Being shunned by all of her former friends, her church, and even her own parents. Why, you ask? Because her church community was just sued for millions of dollars. And all because Mena wanted to do the right thing. Now the only person that will talk to her is her incredibly brilliant (and surprisingly cute) lab partner, Casey. Along with her new science teacher Ms. Sheperd, who everyone thinks is crazy. When Ms. Sheperd begins the new unit on Evolution, and Darwin's theory, the spotlight is soon off of Mena and onto the school. Mena's entire class full of "churchmates" turns on Ms. Sheperd and her ignorance towards religion. They'll do anything to take her down, including dragging in the community pastor, and getting him to preach to the class. The only person on Ms. Sheperd and Mena's side is Casey, and Mena soon realizes that she feels a lot more than friendship for him. I definitely recommend this book for young adults and middle school age kids. If you don't believe in the theory of evolution, it's still worth the old college try. Robin Brande certainly has a slightly controversial, but amazingly written book on the trials and tribulations of surviving the evolutionary jungle we call high school.

finally, a YA book i can recommend to teens!

yes! a fantastic book about and for teenagers that i can actually recommend to teenagers!

a bit like the movie "saved" in some ways, the narrator has just (as the book begins) been excommunicated from her church and youth group for being the whistle-blower over her church and youth group's campaign against a gay kid in her school. her whistle-blowing, in the form of an apology letter to the boy after his attempted suicide, has resulted in lawsuits against the church and pastor.

in the midst of this lonely ostracism (coupled with a massive silent treatment from her parents), the narrator struggles to redefine her faith. at the same time, she's getting caught up in a new polarizing campaign against evolution being taught in her biology class.

this would be a wonderful book to read with a group of christian teenagers. all kinds of great discussion could result: loneliness, love, articulated faith, the gospel, evolution and faith. a great read for teenagers and adults who care about them.

Important, importand book.

If you love your children, and you love Science, and maybe you love God, then rush out and buy this book. Other people have mentioned what its about, but what its really about is finding that perfect balance between scientific knowledge and spiriruality.

It's also about love, respect and honesty.

And its a little about freedom of speech and integrity.

If any of these things bother you, don't read it. Or read it, because it might rub off on you.

Give this book to your children.

Maybe it's not the first of the civ building type games, but it's the first rule set for those games. Played between H.G. Wells' kids, with him as moderator, this nation versus nation in combat and comerce game is still fun to play. It's very family oriented and a good way to bond with parents and kids. Since everything is physical there is no ambiguous rules to be misinterpreted, this helps belay blow ups between siblings. A fun fun game for all!

If you haven't read H. G. Wells's "Floor Games" (and the later but better known "Little Wars") you owe it to yourself to check them out. They're funny, creative, insightful, and elegantly written--a century-old testament to Wells's genius. Kudos to Varhola and Skirmisher Publishing for rescuing these classics from obscurity.

I must admit I had not heard of "Floor Wars" prior to reading "Little Wars". The book predates "Little Wars" but is often considered a companion to the other book. It focuses more on the collecting and building of settings than actual wargaming. The books compliment each other well. "Floor Wars" sparked my imagination even more...taking me back to the little countries and armies that I used to think up in my youth. It was amusing listening to Wells go on about how good figures for certain periods and ranges were not available. I guess nothing really changes after all!

My son started showing an interest in Geography in the 3rd grade so we bought him several books & this was one of them!! He is now a walking text book! watch out!! He has won several Geography bees & this is one of the books he has studied from!! Plus he just loves reading the information & sponging up the information!! This book had a lot of great tips about what to expect at & from a Geography bee. Tips for kids & for parents (which I felt helpful.) We recognized several of the study questions were used in the bee to... not his questions :) - But it was enjoyable as a parent too to learn the facts from this book! Enjoy!

This WHOLE series of books is a BIG hit with kid's between 9 and 13 years of age. It has EVERYTHING a child of that age loves to talk about. The stories are entertaining and very topical for kid's in that age group.

I was able to meet Henry Winkler at a book signing and he is a wonderful individual. He suffers from Dislexia and incorporates his difficulties with Dislexia during his childhood in a way that makes children understand that even though someone may be different, they still are important. But don't think these books are all about dislexia, they're not. They deal with issues that kids of the 9-13 age bracket face every day.

So far, I like the book about the Enchilada and my second favorite is the newer one about family trips. I can relate, my Sister ALWAYS threw up in the car.

Anyone who has a child with Dislexia should be buying these books. If your child does not suffer from Dislexia, these books are still very awesome, your kid's will LOVE them!

I self studied the ap psych exam and got a 5, all thanks to this book. However, it has a few striking contradictions with the princeton review books of similar publication date.
It is somewhat minor, but still alarming.
This book has all the information, and then some. it covers all the bases. if you study this book, you will get a on the ap exam.

This book is the only reason that I got a 5 on the exam. The psych teacher that taught us that year absolutely sucked - gave us no prep for the exam at all. I took my time to memorize the whole book and the multiple choice part was all very easy to answer. This book even covered information that I didn't know from the class - and they appeared in the exam. Great book, absolutely recommend it.

I took the AP back in 2002/2003 and my AP psych teacher wasn't up to par. This book is fairly thin but don't be fooled. I read this book from cover to cover and came out with a 5 on the AP. My friend went into the AP with what the teacher taught (nothing) and came out with a 2.

This study guide was very helpful in studying for the AP test and also studying for class tests and discussions. There was some material in there that we did not cover in class and it provided a more in-depth coverage on the themes. I will probably use this book in the future for a reference for future studies that may not be in the class book. Well written, organized, and over all prepared me for the test and all the other tests in the class. It was also very helpful to be able to write notes and etc in the book, until in the text book in class.

This is a great book and I recommend EVERYONE should read it. Parents, grandparents, and even teens! Too often adults feel they are too old to learn. Children should be taught from an early age to love learning and that learning doesn't just happen 5 days a week from 8 - 3. This book is awesome and I wish my parents had read and followed it when I was a child.

Still, something about how John Holt writes about children and how they learn and the little things that can make it or break it... captures my attention, makes me laugh, and continues to enlighten me. I wish there were more passionate people in the world like him.

I bought this book for my 13 year old who has always stuggled academically and socially. However, now that she's in middle school it bothers her more and more.

One of the issues I've noticed is that she doesn't have a good understanding of what she reads or hears. Miscommunication, social mis-steps and frustration typify the way she interacts with the world.

One of the techniques described in the book teaches kids how to use a dictionary AND find mass for each word. You can see her "lights come on" when she does this. Kinda like, "Oh, that's what it is!" It's funny...she hates reading. But she'll read this book. And when I bought her a picture dictionary she wouldn't put it down! It was as if a whole new world opened up. She walked around reading definitions out loud.

Her grades in English have gone from a D to an A in one school term. So we'll likely use more of LRH's study material.

A "Must- Have" Book For Everyone!

This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to learn. With the recent lowering of scholastic aptitude tests, over 45% drop-out rate in high school, the wrongful labeling of kids with invented "learning disorders", this is the only book that contains the solution to these problems in our society. This book goes back to the 1950's standards when people were literate and read for entertainment. I've used this book as a former homeschool teacher and currently as a life improvement coach. For over two decades I've followed the children and adults whom I've helped with this book, living the lives they choose to live because they have the tools to learn anything! Learning does not have to be complicated. On the contrary, this book breaks learning down to the simplicities of how to learn by giving one: (1) the ability to recognize what the barriers to study are, and (2) the amazingly simple tools to remove the barriers. This is a "must-have" book for everyone!

A Fairytale Classic For The 21st Century
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-11
"Lonely Werewolf Girl" is a modern-day fairytale, destined to become a twenty-first century classic. Like the fables from the Brothers Grimm, Martin's story is a mixture of mysterious characters, improbable situations...laced with underlying social issues prevalent to current times. Unlike previous enchanted myths and legends, Martin interlaces his tale with his signature abundance of tongue-in-cheek humor.

Set in present day Great Britain, the story revolves around an angst ridden teenage werewolf, her werewolf family, two misfit humans, a large supporting cast of mythological beings, oh and a bevy of the inevitable evil bad-guys. There is murder, espionage, mayhem and bedlam, slapstick absurdity, and of course the expected guest appearance of Martin's fairies (after all, it wouldn't be a Martin Millar classic without the inclusion of the mischievous winged creatures).

Under all the fun and frivolity, Martin touches upon serious psychological and emotional issues that plague contemporary teens. Issues such as eating disorders, addiction, peer pressure, abuse, abandonment, heartache, and self-mutilation. Martin handles the inclusion of these serious issues with a nonchalant, non-preachy manner.

As with all of Martin's novels, "Lonely Werewolf Girl" features a cast of hundreds (ok, I am not sure of the exact character count, it could possibly be closer to thousands). Along with a robust cast of characters, the main storyline mingles with a plethora of subplots. This is the true genius behind all of Martin's works, his ability to effectively weave a multitude of characters and subplots into a coherent and plausible story. As always, he makes the reader believe in the unbelievable.

At 560 pages, "Lonely Werewolf Girl" is the most prolific of Martin's novels. Despite its length, the novel is a quick read, and evokes the "can't put it down" syndrome. The last chapter gives hint of a sequel...I know that I will be the first in line to read the further adventures of the "Lonely Werewolf Girl."

Good Writing, Bad Editing
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-29
This is one of the best books I've read this year. It's also the book with the worst editing I have ever seen.

The plot is wild and funny. The daughter of a werewolf Thane is being hunted by both her family (she tried to kill her father and quite nearly succeeded) and a guild of werewolf hunters. Worse, she battles her anxiety. Lonely Werewolf Girl has many, many characters. Sometimes it's difficult to keep track of them all. I enjoyed this book on many levels. I didn't finish this book quickly, not because it wasn't good, but the short chapters which jumped from character and place and did all sorts of funny acrobats which taxed my poor concentration. This was a good thing. I dragged the pleasure on for three days as opposed to finishing it in one swallow.

Millar, being at least as talented as Gaiman and Pratchett, would do himself well to find another editor. Or maybe the editor would do him or herself well by hiring a high school student to proof read the final draft before sending it to print. Obviously no human read the final draft, and any reasonably literary high schooler could do better than Microsoft Word at spelling and grammar. The sloppy editing did this writing wrong.

Regardless, I give this book a five. Reviews are generally seen as a reflection of the writer and not the editor. The writing was excellent.

I bought this book at my local bookstore.I was looking for a new book and the cover jumped out at me.It turned out to be one of the best books I have ever read. While it is not a dark horor story, there are great battles, fantastic characterization, and rivalry and back stabbing among werewolf clans.
Kalix is the main character of the story. She is an outcast from her werewolf clan for past crimes against her king. Now she is a skinny, homeless, malnourished werewolf girl living on the streets. She is being hunted by her clan who have orders to bring her back to face trial. She is both hated and feared by her clan because she is a fierce fighter when she is overcome by her battle lust. She trusts no one but her self, but grudgingly is befriended by a couple of roommates who take her in and help her.
One of her sisters is a werewolf fashion designer who has a friend that is an other-worldly-fire-elemental-warrior queen with a fashion fetish.

There are twin werewolf sisters who aspire to be rock stars, but in reality are slackers who lie around and just get drunk all the time, living off the clans money.

There is so much more to this book than what is written above. You will truely not want to put it down once you start reading it.This book ended up making the rounds at work and everyone who read it loved it.Some kept it awhile,so their family members could read it.

My review title says it all...READ THIS BOOK!!!

I really enjoyed this book. There is something refreshing about how seamlessly the mundane, the fantastical, and the absurd all blend together. There were a lot of characters to juggle, but with deft skill on the part if the author, I found that I could keep up (Except tracing back the family tree of the werewolves etc.)
The character of Malveria in particular was a lot of fun. So overall well written, fun, and I will definitely look into more by this author.

An exhilarating experience

Martin Millar has created a world that is so ordinary and extraordinary at the same time - it's so easy to immerse in it and enjoy every bit of fun, almost forgetting to leave.

I loved it.
