I felt comfortable buying this book as I was familiar with the author prior to purchase. I have been a big fan of the author's web site for over a year. I have used his tool reviews to make purchases and enjoyed his writings on tool set up, use, and safety. Tom Hintz knows the subject and just as important, he can relate this knowledge to you in a friendly, fun, accessible manner. This woodworking book is filled with information, yet is an easy and enjoyable read. The author's sense of humor shows through just as his skill and concern to do it right. I enjoy woodworking and reading about the subject, and this is my new favorite in my book collection. The author utilizes hundreds of color photos, along with detailed drawings, tables, and examples to fully demonstrate his points. The author has a focus on accuracy and safety that really make these critical subjects integral to all the process and not as afterthoughts. The ten chapters have added bonuses worked in such as the numerous "Tips" or "New Tools" sections that expand on the subject being discussed. After reading this book you will be more productive with the tools you have and you will be a smarter consumer as you add to your shop. The information provided gives me the confidence to try new ways to make dadoes or try that half lap joint that I had been hesitant to attempt.

The ten chapters are as follows:
1) Setting up shop (32 pages)
2) Buying Tools (48 pages)
3) Tool setup, alignment, and maintenance (18 pages) - very good info, maximize the accuracy of your tools.
4) Working safely (14 pages)
5) Selecting wood (12 pages)
6) Preparing the wood (8 pages)
7) Adhesives and fasteners (16 pages)
8) Joining wood (30 pages)
9) Finishing (14 pages)
10) Skill building projects (54 pages) - Six projects. I really like this section in particular. The projects include a basic lidded box, tool box, bedside bookcase, shop wall cabinets, base cabinets, and a coffee table (I find this table design a little "clunky" but you could adapt it and there are several skill building steps involved). Tom walks you through the steps in a way where you can refine an existing skill or pick up a new skill or method.

Tom Hintz has an earnest, knowledgeable approach to woodworking. You feel and share in his enthusiasm for the projects. For me, this is a book that I am enjoying as a recent purchase, and I know that it will frequently be pulled from the shelf for reference in the future. I am a careful shopper but I am extremely pleased with this purchase. I am sure that this will be valued by anyone who enjoys woodworking.

If you are a graduate student or a researcher getting your feet wet in nitric oxide assays, this book is an excellent starting place. The complete step-by-step breakdown of assays is vital to graduate students honing their experimental technique, and the variety of assays will benefit any basic science researcher. This is a very impressive, concise compilation of most assays you will require in nitric oxide work.

A Practical Guide to Combustion
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-16
The North American Combustion Handbook is a very worthwhile investment. It is a real time saver, as it compiles useful, useable information relating to gas burner design and operation, stoichiometry, basic heat transfer and fluid flow. A real plus and value is the units conversion section in the back of the book. Virtually any conversion you can think of is tabularized there. Although geared to industrial applications in some sections, the presentation is general enough to be of value to assist in introduction to or refreshing oneself with the combustion concepts involved.

Number Wonder: A Teacher's Perspective
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-21
I am always pleased to find materials to use with my students that challenge their mathematical thinking, build problem solving techniques, and sharpen their reasoning skills. Koetke's "Number Wonder" is a great resource for teaching any strand of mathematics for students in grades 7-12. My students so enjoyed the Magnetic Numbers activity, exploring Sequences and Numberic Black Holes, and proving Goldbach's Conjecture is false. The teacher notes were very explicit and easy to use. Although some of the problems at first glance seem very difficult, Koetke's detailed explanation of the way the problems should be approached with students allowed all of my students, including some of those who are challenged in math, to achieve success. Number Wonder is also an excellent resource for those math teachers looking to incorporate more technology into their math program. I anticipate the next installment of the Real Mathematics series and so do my students.

A stereotype-smashing study.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-07
This book is an excellent source for anyone seeking insight into the crises in our central cities today. Nightingale shows how many of the problems associated with indigent minorities are actually problems with American culture in general--such as materialism. Poor people are as materialistic as everyone else, they just don't have the means to indulge it. Hence crime. So, which is the real problem; the incessant admonitions to buy, buy, buy, or minorities lacking in "character"? Nightingale also discusses how certain cultural characteristics, such as fist fighting to settle a dispute, have long traditions and are often misunderstood by outsiders and labeled as criminal. Nightingale, who is white, discovered some of these things firsthand--he lived in a black neighborhood while writing this book and had many of his own stereotypes exploded as he went along. All in all, a very good book.

Mavericks of black literature are the focus of these essays, considering such under-mentioned writers as J.A. Rogers, an early member of the Harlem Renaissance and pioneering journalist; and Vincent Carter, who lived as a voluntary expatriate writer in Europe. Out There is an intriguing and thoughtful account of a very unusual set of black writers.
