This is a very well illustrated introductory guide to yoga mainly for beginners. The poses and sequences are clearly explained and variations are provided for different levels of ability. A minor criticism is that the author asserts that the poses will stimulate internal organs such as the thyroid or spleen. To do what exactly? This is silly and detracts from the work. She should edit those comments out on any future edition. Otherwise this is highly recommended.

Love this book. First saw it at a spa I visited. I like the layout and pictures which show you the correct forms. The part I like the best are the "sequence of asanas" at the back with suggested asanas for morning, evening, gentle and strong sequence. Well done.

I have always enjoyed Victoria magazine, and have several of their books. Again they've made one that is beautifully done AND has practical tips and how tos. There are even some recipes to make simple toners, bath oils and other such beauty items.

It's a great gift book for someone who hasn't quite learned to slow down and take care of herself. And if that someone is you... It's so much better! :-)

The book is broken down into the seasonal needs of the skin. With tips and secrets to keep your skin looking its beautiful best with the different weather conditions. Not only that, but there are some very nice ideals in making your bathroom more "you" friendly, even if it's not as big as your bedroom... Enjoy!

This book is special not only because it tells the story of modern day miracles and the perseverance of love but because Carol is a very real and loving person. As her neice, I have been blessed by having her in my life. Hers is a simple story of the tremendous journey she underwent as a patient with GBS. The book is easy to read and will leave you feeling inspired to face each new day with heightened hope in the future.

Once again, Laurie Knowlton has given us a stunning picture book that both informs and inspires. For every family who knows someone with dementia, or every child who loves Grandma, this book is a must!

A simple story about a young boy and his coming to grips with his grandmother who has Alzheimer's disease.

As I read this story I thought of the movie The Notebook that I thoroughly enjoy. Both this book and The Notebook deal with coping with Alzheimer's disease. Both will allow their audiences to get emotionally wrapped up in the subject. This book is 14 scenes (2 pages each) and I liked it. The illustrations were not my cup of tea, and I think the text could have been somewhat better. I suspect this book will be popular with kids who have a loved one in their family who has Alzheimer's disease. And the book will be used more as a teaching tool rather than a fun book to learn how to read or follow a story line.

The story is about a young boy whose grandmother can't remember him or the fun things the two of them did together when they were younger. The grandmother now lives in a nursing home and the boy wonders why they still visit his mother's mother. By the end of the story he figures out the answer. Very touching.

I would have liked the book better if the pictures had been done differently. The paintings made me feel like I was reading a dream rather than a real-life story. 4 stars!

This book was not really marketed as a low carb cookbook, so I missed it at first, and came across it by luck! I've been low carb for years, and this is really the way I like to eat, but sometimes you gotta have a few carbs, too, and this book has recipes that have half the pasta, but all of the flavor! As with most of her books, there are a large variety of items with fish, meat and just veggies. I found at least thirty winning recipes in this book, which make it a winner for me! The Spinach and Meatball "no-sangna" was an absolute smash hit in my house!

I taught myself to knit with this book fairly quickly. Getting started was a little confusing, though and I had to do an internet search to find a video to watch about it. Some things are very clear and others I had a lot of trouble with (although I'm assuming it's just because I was learning).

I've not worked my way through all of this book, but I would say that it's a good way to get started knitting. =)

I ordered this for a friend who wanted to learn how to knit. I have used Dummies books for lots of other subjects, and in general, have found them very helpful and clear. Not this one.

I understood "for dummies" to mean for people who know absolutely nothing about the topic but want to learn. I don't know if the authors are so experienced that they don't remember what it was like to be a beginner, or if it's just really bad editing, but this book jumps all over the place and even talks about designing your own sweaters in the first few pages, as if a beginner would understand what that means. Knitting lingo that only experienced knitters would know appear way too early as well.

The first couple of lessons, just casting on and knitting, are too complicated and have errors. The diagrams don't go with the text or are on the next page from the text (?!) so you can't refer to both at the same time. The material is presented in a bizarre order and the ugly format using cheap newsprint with the color pictures in a clump in the center just doesn't do it for a knitting book. I'm so glad I shipped it to myself so that I could send it back in exchange for the Teach Yourself to Knit Visually book, which is superb, packed with color pictures, and costs only a couple dollars moreTeach Yourself Visually Knitting (Teach Yourself Visually). From now on, I will go to the bookstore to review a Dummies book in person before purchasing! A real disappointment.

Helped with allergies and blood pressure
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-15
I am starting week 3 of the Ultrasimple diet - with some walnuts and seeds added for variety. I've only lost a couple of pounds (thanks to those walnuts and seeds) but after the first 3 days, I did not have my usual allergies, headaches and stuffy nose symptoms I've been living with for a number of years. It was great to know that my allergies weren't just related to cedar and mold. I did find I had more energy by the end of the first week. Like another reviewer I chose to buy my vegetable broth and tried a few different brands. With a little added hot sauce they were all very good.
The smoothies are easy to make and change up with tofu and soy milk or rice protein as the base. I always add the almond butter and 1/2 banana to the shakes for extra flavor. I stuck with salmon from Costco's and chicken mostly throughout the diet which was easy to make - add some steamed veggies, a sweet potato or brown rice and it's a quick meal.
It is hard to remember which supplements to take when and I finally typed out the basic program and leave it in my kitchen to refer to each day. My only problem is that I bought the book for my Kindle so it makes it more difficult to read and skip around in the book. I also am a little put out by all of the emails to get me to purchase the food - quite expensive. I think it cheapens the message.
Lastly, I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and have always had pretty high blood pressure. I am now in the normal range.
Bottom line, it is worth trying -

Great "program" not diet. This is not a simple plan. It takes lots of time, planning, and dedication. But the results are outstanding and well worth it, if you can "stay with it". Great philosophy to live life by -- free of all things that make you toxic: not just food, but behaviors, people, jobs, etc. The guidance provided is simple and it is easy to read.

TOXINS + INFLAMMATION => FAT => SICK
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-18
The author explains that the key to losing weight is getting healthy, and that what makes people sick also makes them fat. He also explains that being fat creates sickness and disease. These diseases include heart disease, cancer, arthritis, dementia, and diabetes. He further explains that toxicity and inflammation are key issues for weight control, and that they cause a state of fluid retention. This is all so true! The Ultrasimple Diet is presented as a fast, simple way to drop 10 pounds. It includes a 7-day weight loss "quick-start" plan specifying what to eat, including supplements, recipes, and stress reduction tips.

Before beginning the 7-day plan there is a pre-detox week that eliminates many of the offending foods and ingredients. The plan is designed to eliminate sources of toxins and inflammation by avoiding allergens, flour products, coffee, sugar, alcohol, processed food, fast food, junk food, trans fats, unhealthy fats, and high-fructose corn syrup. After the initial detox week you go on the detailed and regimented 7-day program and eat whole, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory foods, including vegetables, fruits, healthy dishes, "UltraShakes", and a special "UltraBroth". The recipes require special ingredients and a time commitment. The author hopes that by following the plan for a week you will see the power of making positive changes in your life and want to continue. Exercise is added later.

This highly qualified author presents a healthy eating plan which would be very helpful for those who do best while following a controlled, structured plan that tells them exactly what to do. If you follow this program, you will be motivated to continue a more healthy and toxic-free lifestyle. I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams as well as The 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective

The good doctor fills half his pages with "case studies" (sorry, these are only "anecdotes")- He starts every unit with half of the story, then he repeats the WHOLE story with a half page chart detailing the person's measurements. Then he spends several MORE pages whining about how he just didn't have room to include what you need to know to use the diet, so you have to go to his website to download it. Then while you're there trying to get the information to download (and it's more of the same cluttered nonsense) he comes on a movie to explain that he didn't really want to sell anything but so many of us begged so hard that for $[...] a week we can just buy the diet and the supplements. If we want to buy just the supplements, we have to call (yes, by phone, however there is a toll-free number.)
And as far as I can tell which could be wrong though I've read the book twice, it never gives clear instructions about what supplements to use. ("Liver support supplements," "probiotics" At least the book purchase comes with free snake oil.)
Each day on the diet takes about 7 pages of instructions, and they are EXACTLY THE SAME!
I'd bet good money I could get all the information needed for this diet on 5, 3x5 index cards. One for the schedule, one for shopping list, 2 for recipes, and the fifth one will have Our Father on one side and the Kaddish other.

I consider myself very informed on the various chemicals and toxins that infultrate our daily lives. I was given this book as a gift with the giver stating that they thought I would just like to use it as a reference since I would likely be aware of most of the information shared in the text. On the contrary...I learned more than I could have ever imagined. Imus does a fantastic job of making us aware of just how toxic our cleaning products are by going through extensive research on each chemical contained in popular cleaning products. My eyes were opened - wide! I finished the book and the following day boxed up all of my chemical supplies and gave them away. I plan on giving this book to everyone I love. I believe that the changes she advocates will make my newborn have a much cleaner and healthier life. This is a must read for any health conscious individual.

Good, but sometimes vague

Review Date: 2008-05-24
To start off, this is a good book and I am impressed with what Deirdre is doing. I am sure her efforts to help hospitals and other companies go green is one of the most important jobs out there.

Her style is readable and she has some great ideas for all types of cleaning. However I sometimes found the information vague. For example in the laundry section she mentions stain and spot removal alternatives, and says that hydrogen peroxide can be used on whites to remove stains. She then adds "Just make sure that you dilute the hydrogen peroxide thoroughly." But there is never information on what is thoroughly. Is that a 1:1 (water to hydrogen peroxide) ratio or a 5:1? This seems to happen various times.

Also, just so you know, she mentions in the very beginning that she isn't going to give you recipes because you are probably a busy person who doesn't have time for that. However, I did like that she shared what products and brands are safe and effective. I was hoping for a book with more specific recipes and stuff, so it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Also, just a side note, she tends to recommend her own line quite often. Which makes sense, since she is trying to make a living, but it kind of bugged me. To be fair though, she did thoroughly praise Biokleen as one of her favorite lines that she would use if she didn't have her own.

No recipes; just talk and suggestions

I picked this book up today at my local supermarket. I was disappointed because I was expecting recipes for creating your own cleaning products. Instead, there were only suggestions, such as "add essential oil to your wash cycle." Yes, but how much. There were absolutely NO recipes for creating anything to clean with, and references were made to buy Premade cleaning products that are Green. I think there are better books that provide the same introduction to Green cleaning AND they provide the recipes to make the products yourself. I think this book was a plug for her IMUS cleaning products (although she does list other companies in her Resources Section). Instead of buying the book, just donate your money to The Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer (which the proceeds of this book benefits). If she was trying to find a way to earn money for this cause, then writing this book was a smart idea. The downfall is that it's not useful, cause there are no recipes. I'll be buying another book.

I bought "Textured Tresses" today and love it. There is a lot of celebrity name dropping but who cares. It is well written and provides product names, numerous illustrations, detailed how-to's and a salon directory. Also there is a section on picking the right stylist and salon that I found helpful. I enjoyed this book very much. This is a reference book and a book of facts and useful imformation. The writing style is dry. I get a little nuts when I buy a book about home preparedness and there are chapter's about making arrowheads and how to skin a rabbit and how to make a fire by rubbing two sticks together. If things every get this bad, I don't want to live anyway. However, in Mr. Sprigarelli's book, you won't find nutty stuff like making arrowheads. It's smart stuff and to the point. It's worth the money. Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.

Overall, the book is informative. However it devotes too much time to growing food and not enough to being able to survive if you and your family are stuck at home for an extended period of time, such as during a flu pandemic, or loss of electricity for a few weeks. More "retreat home" info would be useful. I would suggest purchasing this book for its overall informative value. But, if you live in NYC or another urban sprawl, most of this book would not apply since growing food and raising animals would not work.

I have a personal copy of this book and thought so highly of it that I tried to buy one for my son. Amazon was temporarily out of stock so I made an online purchase directly from the authors. Guess what, that was in December and it is April now and the book was never sent. The authors have responded to email inquiries and promised to send the book. However they have never followed through and also have never bothered to send a refund. Maybe they are having a crisis of their own, in which case maybe they aren't all that well prepared after all. If you must have it, buy from Amazon or another credible source.

Are you ready for a major crisis?

Most people are not. They have no more than a few days supply of food and no idea what to do in the event of a real long term emergency. After all, you can just run down to the local grocery and get whatever you want, 24 hours a day, right?

Hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards and other natural disasters happen everywhere in the world and they are relatively easy to prepare for, though most people expect "The Government" to take care of them when the inevitable happens. Those who lived through Katrina, the LA riots, etc. know better -- when you dial 911 and there's no answer, you'll have to take care of your family yourself. If you go to the supermarket to stock up...the shelves will be bare and lines of scared people 20 deep at the cash register buying anything in a can and exchanging stories of rioting will snap you into a new reality. I personally experienced this after the LA riots -- it really happened and it WILL happen again.

When disaster strikes, you won't be able to get gasoline, food, clothing or any of the necessities of life -- the store owners will be home protecting their families. Their store may be looted by angry mobs roaming the streets. Believe me, you'll want to avoid all that unpleasantness by preparing now.

It's impossible to prepare for absolutely everything unless you live a self sufficient life off the grid, but this book covers most everything you need to know as an ordinary "civilian". Food, water, shelter, clothing, security, power, etc. -- it's all in here. I especially liked the food section, which does a good job reviewing different types of long term food storage and listing resources for supplies. A year's supply of food is something everyone should have around and this takes a little planning and management that the book does an excellent job of laying out for you. It doesn't have to cost a fortune, either, if you can spare $5-10 per week, in a couple of years, you'll have your year's supply of food in your closet.

I liked the author's philosophy; you're better off having the things you'll need than a pile of gold coins. Being prepared with canned foods, shovels, a garden, a way to make water and power -- these are far more valuable than a few gold discs (though it would probably be good to have a little gold, too). At the height of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, an ounce of gold bought two cans of tuna. Today, it's a lot cheaper to buy two cans of tuna than an ounce of gold, and that's the point of this book.

If you don't think this can happen here in the U.S. or anywhere else in the world -- think again -- it can happen anywhere! This book is a very good overview of everything you will need to survive a major crisis. Even if you don't buy this book, you owe it to yourself to be prepared.
