I am glad I did not pay full price for this book. It is geared toward women who know little to nothing about beauty products and make up application. It did offer some good reference material and it could have shown more detailed "how to" illustrations in the chapters regarding make up application.

I have been extremely inpressed with In Style's large print, large volume, hard back books and this one does not disappoint.

I personally am not someone who wears a lot of makeup or spends a lot of time taking care of my looks but generally that is because I am of unsure of how to begin. I now have great notes to take with me when I go to the store the next time.

I was also pleased that the book did not simply serve as advertisements for overpriced prodcuts. They did mention exclusive salon type items but I also found that Clnque Turn Around Cream and Fructis Conditioner (which I already use) are perfect for me.

This is a great resource for such a wide variety of people but I think it would be a terrific gift for a young lady. I would have loved to have had more details then just how to apply blush when developing a daily "beauty" regiment. I think the sections on skin care would be essential for young teenagers who really need to take care of themselves for life.

I highly suggest this item as a great reference too for any woman.

Wow. I bought this book a few weeks ago and for the first time I'm disappointed with a purchase. Their other title, Instyle Secrets of Style: The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day, was very well done but this book is not. The pictures of famous actresses look like cut and paste and the graphic design and layout looks amateur.

This book doesn't inspire the reader to turn the page. It's dry and clinical and there is nothing unique that sets it apart from similar publications. Aveda Rituals and the Body Shop books like Body Shop Spa are gorgeous to look at, inspiring and make it feel as if you've stumbled upon a secret.

InStyle is a good magazine, not at the same level as Vogue but well done nonetheless. When I purchased this book sight unseen I thought it would take much from magazine, at least provide case studies. It offers none of that and surprisingly makes you feel that unless you want to sink a lot of income into chemicals and plastic surgery, then being beautiful is out of your reach.

I got this book for my sixteenth birthday from my BFF. At first I was like, well I'd never bother to buy this myself... but you should, it is SO helpful! I wouldn't say I was a beginner at beauty, but I can barely put eyeliner on straight. This book was perfect for me because the advice it gave was specific to an idividuals looks (ie, it has tips for different eye shapes, mouth shapes, face shapes, and how to pull it all together...) and it has TONS of helpful facts that I had no idea were true! Like, in the perfume section it talks about which kinds have been proven most sexy to men. Thats just one example, there are dozens more. I LOVE THIS BOOK! It has all the tips I can experiment with and wear for a daytime look, a night look, or a formal event... it is definitely worth it!

I was anxious to read this book because like the author, I spent a good part of my childhood life in Warm Springs. I truly enjoyed this memoir which brought back memories and feelings of my own childhood. I laughed and cried and relieved many of the author's experiences which were very similar to my own. The book is very well written and I have lent it out to friends that have not had any ties to polio, except knowing me. Everyone has enjoyed this light and entertaining reading.

Being a post-polio survivior myself, I took great interest in this true account of a young girl's memory of her years there. I was a little disappointed in the building up of Joey's "flying thru the air" to the actual account of his breaking of both his legs...and thats all that was said of that. I gathered she was forced to leave after that,
as the story seems to abruptly end right after that.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of Warm Springs and FDR's Splendid Deception. ( His bout with Polio at Warm Springs.)

Life among the Polios

When I was a boy we had this lady come into my creative writing class at school, and she read to us from one of her novels. Many of us fell in love with her at first sight, and especially when she began reading the pages of her book, for her voice as many now know, is low and enchanting, the sort of voice that could launch a thousand ships. She was born a little too early to get into the phone sex business but she could have cleaned up! Now comes the tragic story of her heartwarming travails back in the late 40 and early 50s, when she was one of the "polios," as they called themselves, installed among other children in the long hot hospital they called "Warm Springs."

in little Susan's day, the specter of Franklin Roosevelt, the most famous polio victim, was ever present. His photo was in the office of the main doctor, and the little children toasted to his memory (the President had died only five years before, keeping the extent of his paralysis a top state secret, but among the stricken, he was always eager to share).

She was a difficult child born to a wonderful mother who was a top chef and did everything perfectly. Stuck in Warm Springs, her fantasy life really took off and she was forced to be the roommate of sullen, disapproving Caroline, and also she found herself a little boyfriend called "Joey Buckley," which made living in the enforced conditions of Warm Springs a bit more bearable. Her mother sent her many clippings to read, but only one book, oddly enough it was Shirley Jackson's THE LOTTERY, which Susan didn't read but Caroline did.

She had a strange but understandable passion for Father James, the hospital padre, who could make any girl forget her vows. A charming man, James had what we would call today, "charisma." I enjoyed this book but came to feel that she, Susan, was spinning out tale after tale based on tiny scraps of memory, for no one could remember all that, but embroidery is what the novelist does best: we learned that long ago at Ms. Richards Shreve's knee back in the classroom at school.

This book was beautiful, honest and thoughtful. To remember what it was to be 11 or 16 or 25 and what was important to us then and to keep from judging our younger selves seems to be part of our job after middle age. After being parents ourselves we can be more forgiving to our own parents and having been children we can keep from judging our children. Susan Shreve takes her story and through her gaze helps me see what was important what is still important and how those things have changed. I will be thinking about this book for a long while.

There is not a whole lot out there, as far as recollections of the most recent polio years in the US. Having had the disease in 1954 myself, I found this to be a friendly book. It's a great story of how polio people never quit. We, as a group regardless of our various disabilities, have had successfully full lives. And those of us who are dealing with Post Polio Syndrome just keep on keeping on, as does the author of this book.

Hats off to Susan Richards Shreve. Thanks for a good read.

This book give practical advice on how to have a healthy weight family. With children being overweight at an increasing number each year this book should be read by all parents and the techniques put into practice. School administrators need to read it as well so they can understand why school's need to have a physical education program.

I'm about half way through the book and am really enjoying it. The advice is good and realistic. And, yes, I have learned a few new tips.

I wasn't really sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. The book is based on a new program being piloted now by Weight Watchers. The program, in limited areas now teaches parents on how to encourage a "Healthy Weight" home. What surprised me is how different this program is from the one designed by Weight Watchers for adults as part of their nationally available program. For one, they strongly discourage parents from placing all but the most obese of children on a diet and then only with the close supervision of a physician.

The book trains parents on the "5 Simple Rules."
1. Focus on wholesom, nutritious foods.
2. Include treats.
3. Aim to keep nonhomework screen time at two hours (or less) per day.
4. Try to be active an hour per day.
5. The Rules apply to everyone in the home.

While that should tell you all you need to know about the program there is so much more. My daughter 4, does not currently have a weight issue, however as an over obese person since childhood I watch her closely to attempt to prevent her from having the same weight issues I have. I was shocked to learn all of the things I am doing wrong. Everything from what snacks/treats I give her to forcing her to clean her plate, and at least a dozen other things.

One of the things I loved about this book it there was no encouragement to make drastic life altering adjustments to your life. In fact, the book encourages gentler simple steps your family can carry out. It doesn't tell you what order to complete the rules in, but to start with the ones you know you can do. The book offers real life concerns and solutions that even the most out of shape family can take to heart.

The book also discourages you from weighing your children more than when they are at the physician's office or even discussing weight in front of them. If anyone in your house struggles with their weight this book is a must have. I wish it had been available to my parents when I was young, I only hope I can learn enough from it to prevent the same mistakes in my children.

I do not remember the excrutiating pain I was apparently in when I had my brain aneurysm. Nor do I recall my months of recovery in hospitals and the nursing home. But I am very grateful that my friend and caregiver never gave up on using her emotion-based approach to brain rehab. I typed the manuscript for Brain, Heal Thyself. I also proofread it. I believe all caregivers and stroke patients (who can read) SHOULD read Brain, Heal Thyself. This caregiving method saved my life. I give this book seven stars!

Brain, Heal Thyself: A Caregiver's New Approach To Recovery From Stroke, Aneurysm, And Traumatic Brain Injuries is one of the most important self-help books on the market. The author's good friend experienced a near-fatal brain aneurysm and recovered: her title blends memoir and medical insights and will appeal to any caregiver who wants a blend of `how to' and biography.

Review Date: 2008-04-16
This book was interesting, but not particularly helpful in terms of information. I sincerely hope the caregiver has stopped smoking since this is one of the number one causes of stroke and I can't imagine smoking around a stroke victim. The degree of care provided to the stroke victim by the author is interesing as it certainly did not impress me as what would be provided by someone in a true caretaker role--no mention of attending PT sessions, meeting with physicians, etc. Also no real information on what was helpful and what wasn't in terms of care. There's a big deal made about the link between the author's experience in advertising and her ability to motivate/inspire the victim, but this was not evident to me at all in the actual text of the book.

a must read if you want to help someone recover

I am a caregiver for someone recovering from a stroke - so I read the second part of the book first, where Madonna takes Eve home and begins her common sense and using-everything-she-ever-learned-in-life approach to helping her friend recover. Every occupational therapist in America should be required to read this book. It's a great book, an easy read, by a wonderful, creative, funny, honest human being. Madonna will cause you to start thinking creatively about how you can help your loved one in your daily interactions with them. A must read for anyone helping someone recover emotionally and/or cognitively, because relating to them as if they are still a competent human being is vital for rebuilding their confidence to keep trying, and by continued trying they recover.(that's a bit of knowledge that our medical community has failed to pick up on)

Everyday people face serious risks such as automobile accidents, damage or complete destruction of their home, and even death from an illness or accident. Because of these risks, it is important to protect yourself from years of financial agony and devastation. Cheap Insurance For your Home, Automobile, Health & Life provides you with the insight to understand how insurance rates are calculated, the importance of homeowners and renters insurance, how to take advantage of premium reductions such as Multiple Line or Vehicle Safety, and when to make a switch to another insurance company to avoid cancellation fees. In this informative book you will discover how your driving record and credit score affect your automobile insurance, how to determine whether or not you are adequately covered, and how to obtain high risk insurance if you are considered uninsurable. Cheap Insurance For Your Home, Automobile, Health & Life details the types of health insurance available for individuals, families, self employed, government funded insurance, and extra insurance such as: accidental death or dismemberment or specific disease insurance. It also explores the difference between whole life insurance versus term life insurance, including information on policies that can build cash value such as universal life policies. Cheap Insurance for your Home, Automobile, Health and Life is very informative, offers you several ways to save on insurance premiums, and provides you with the confidence to ask the right questions to get the rates you deserve. I give this book a 4 out of 5 star rating.

Cheap Insurance, by Carla & Lee Rowley, is a terrific book! It has full, comprehensive explanations for a complicated subject matter, but it breaks information down so that it's easy to understand. The book gives scenarios and examples of insurance situations, gives Tips and overviews, and teaches you about necessary and unnecessary coverage.

The book is most helpful in providing a basis in which you can make informed comparisons, and understand your insurance company's obligations, and method of assessing your risk factors.

Especially helpful is the books' state -by- state auto insurance comparisons, which outline the state's auto and personal liability coverage requirements. Also, the online links provided, give you the option of further comparison shopping, and a place to do further study.

I found myself flipping back to take advantage of the insurance glossary, for an explanation of the terms & vocabulary. This is a great book to read before you sign on the dotted line of any insurance contract.

This is a must read for every adult or college student. I'm 28, and no one has ever explained to me about all the different insurance policies and how important having insurance is. The book was easy to read and I found it was also easy to understand.

There are so many aspects concerning insurance that this book deals with. One point that I found very interesting was how most home policies do no cover a home business. I thought home insurance covers everything in your home, but it doesn't.

After reading this I learned what discounts I can get, how to check to make sure that the coverage I'm paying for will actually cover me in a real crisis, and how to shop for the right policy. We always think, it can't happen to me, unfortunately bad things can happen and you should be prepared.

This book would make for a perfect class, and I think everyone should read it. This book tells you everything you need to know and gives you the tools you need to take care of yourself and your family in an emergency. I feel better knowing that I can go to an agent and make sure they aren't screwing me over, by knowing all the facts beforehand.

Finally, an insurance guide we can all use!

This is a terrific all-in-one resource for buying and managing personal insurance. It's clearly written, easy to read, and is a wealth of information. I thought I knew a lot about insurance already, but I definitely picked up some valuable tips from this book.

This book provides the reader with a thorough explanation of different types of insurance (car, homeowner's, health, and life), with a concise breakdown of different options within each type. There are clear examples on real-life cases that helped me understand that the cheapest policy isn't always the best. I also now know what discounts to ask for and how to shop more effectively for insurance.

What was most valuable to me, personally, was the section on health insurance. With an aging parent, I have to deal with Medicare and Medicaid, and this book helped me understand those services better. The appendixes in the back of the book are also excellent resources that I will keep to refer back to. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a handy all-in-one guide.

Cheap? Really?

Review Date: 2008-04-29
Despite a misleading title (no insurance is cheap!), this book discusses the most important types of insurance and available discount suggestions in thorough, easy-to-comprehend language. Using a solid, well-outlined approach, the authors have produced a manual that would make a perfect gift for a young person entering the world of adult decisions as well as a handy guide for people of any age. As we go through life, our needs change--and, as the authors point out, our insurance coverage needs change as well. Therefore, this book is a strong introduction to the aspects of startup insurance-shopping as well as a continuing-education reference tool for those already insured.

One of the book's better features, a state-by-state listing of vehicular insurance requirements, is found in Chapter 12. The information is presented in paragraph form that might have been neatly complemented with a table for quick and easy visual comparison, but is nonetheless helpful as shown. Just as vehicle insurance costs vary from state to state, so do the requirements, and this is just one of the areas to research when contemplating a potential relocation for one's home or business.

Along with describing and detailing various forms of insurance, the authors make a conscientious effort to anticipate the many "pitfalls" awaiting people who have little or no insurance knowledge. In the case of a flooded basement, for example, even the best flood insurance will not cover water damage that was caused by a drain backup; to the layman, a flood is a flood is a flood--but insurance companies do not agree. The time to know this, of course, is when the basement's still dry!

Anyone who has not studied insurance or been well-advised by a qualified insurance agent would do well to read this book, and even take it along while insurance shopping. No insurance is truly inexpensive, but Cheap Insurance shows the way to successfully insure yourself while ensuring that you buy the best policy for your specific needs.

This is the only book that I know of that dares to suggest that parents misapplying Christianity can be dangerous to their kids. Some parents go through life thinking they can do no wrong to their kids as long as they are (or pretend to be) Christian with good intentions.

The author respects Christianity. It has its place. But many parents take things to the extreme and misuse religion in the home. Also, this book helped me see my parent's mistakes and how to not repeat them in my own family. Highly Recommend.

I highly recommend this book to any Christian who aspires to raise (a) happy, healthy child(ren). Learn how to share your faith with your children in a way that gives them the best that your beliefs have to offer, rather than inadvertently instilling terror, self-hatred, anger, sadness and inhibition in your child.

This book is also useful for adults who grew up in homes where Christianity took a toxic form. It will help them to heal through understanding hurts inflicted in the name of religion, and will show a way to retain the positive aspects of Christianity while decrying its the misapplication.

I came from a strong, Evangelical Christian home. I wouldn't trade it for the world. My family wasn't perfect, but there was a lot of love and affection along with good, thorough learning of the Bible and what It really means, and most important, emphasis on the God of the Scriptures.

And except for not going to school dances, we didn't live with a lot of "do's and don'ts." To be honest, we had so many fish to fry with our church and Youth For Christ (Campus Life) activities, that I didn't miss dancing at all.

But unfortunately many of the Christian organizations I was exposed to were a totally different story. My father is an evangelist and we went to a lot of Bible Conferences as well many different churches and organizations, and there were times I thought I would never be able to keep up with the restrictions and artificial rules that some of these groups tried to promote as Biblical.

Donald Sloat, in his book THE DANGERS OF GROWING UP IN A CHRISTIAN HOME points this out accurately and well. Most of the examples show rules to live by that are either unbiblical or carried to an extreme that the Bible never intended. He is quick to show the extremes that people can go to, but he never once discredits real Christianity.

This book is guaranteed to make you think!

While I did learn several things about ergonomics, I finally put the book down when I got tired of the preaching. Many of the author's topics were not on subject and, instead, were rantings about the time we spend watching television or other pet peeves of the authors. It got really old. I was looking forward to learning how to design my home. I didn't need the nagging. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

This trade paperback is chock full of practical advice and downright wisdom. It tells us how to structure home and office to fit the human body, all its limitations and wondrous powers. Ergonomic Living follows its own advice such that form follows function and use.

The book has two major sections, home and office. There are eleven chapters: How to Enter Your Home, How to Relax, The Inner Circle. Each briefly introduces a series of concise, well-designed modules: The Deafening Kitchen, Wiring and Cables, Effective Ambient Lighting, Choosing the Right Pillow. The photos and illustrations are excellent. "You have a right to an ergonomic kitchen in which your personal needs, both physical and mental, come first." The authors show you how to exercise that right. Right on!

For many parents, the chapter on creating a child-friendly home will, by itself, be worth the price of the whole book.

My edition is a little out of date on some things, but the principles remain sound, the information useful. For example, someone ready to buy a DVD recorder will profit from the section on selecting a VCR. The summary still applies: "Difficult to memorize controls are never used. Remotes keyed to newspaper codes will be used frequently. Remotes keyed to instruction booklet diagrams will be ignored. Tactile well balanced [sic] remotes will remain near your hand. Slippery, flat remotes will end up on the floor. Basic controls should be immediately obvious."

_Ergonomic Living_ is a warm, pragmatic and, yes, wise book. It concludes, "Change, movement and grace. This is a friendly world; we built it, and now we have the tools to live in it on your own terms. We can choose to inhabit healthful, comfortable environments, amicable places that serve our needs. We can be the masters of our own possessions, the actors on a human-centered stage. We can feel good all day."

Whether you are new to the home office or a seasoned pro, this brilliant book can help you feel better all day.

As a registered interior designer and certified Feng Shui professional, I found this book to be an interesting read. It will help designers and architects, as well as homeowners, analyze space and make informed decisions as to build or remodel. The charts are easy to follow and right on point. This book is filled with illustrations that are wonderful in demonstrating the ideas being presented. The "forward thinking" floorplans at the end of the book show that these two authors understand the diversity of how people live today and how their homes could be better designed to meet their needs.

I found this book to be a "must read" if you are planning to build or remodel and it is easy to understand. My husband and I are building a home and we found this book to be a vital resource for our decision making. It helped us select the outside colors, wall colors, flooring, lighting, window coverings, as well as furniture placement. In our meeting to finalize the floor plan with the builder, his wife was so impressed with our feedback and rationale that she asked me to get her the book!

I am going to build muy custom house and I want to do it according to the Feng Shui. I was expecting to find many Feng Shui floor plans samples...well let me tell you that not, it has not many Feng Shui floor plans, such a few, and most of them do not match what the book says. I mean that most of the foor plans are not according to Feng Shui bagua grid (occidental), i.e.: bathroom is Wealth area, when it is known in all schools that bathroom can't be placed there.
I found just 1 floor plan, so it is not worthly to get this book if you are looking for Feng Shui floor plans.

The Best "Feng Shui" for ocidental people

The School of Pyramid Feng Shui is adapted to the ocidental people. No focus on directions belonging to an element or not. Is centered in the harmony of the nature cycles where all the elements of nature (colors, sounds, shapes, etc.)and people with their houses must achieved balance. Very good reading. With lots of questions and cases, thinking in all situations (a home for a familiy, for a couple, or just one person). If you liked, probably you'll buy (like me) the other book of Nancilee Wydra "Feng Shui goes to the office".

Very nice!

This is a great book! It is not based on the traditional feng shui, but ascribes to pyramid feng shui. So if you are looking for why everyone in the house experiences the same illness that cropped up when you moved in, this may not fit the bill. But it addresses the flow of chi and the balance of yin/yang in detail. It is a great read and opens you up to the different sounds, textures, smells and visual apects of your home that makes a home interesting and appealing to everyone that experiences it. It literally brings your awareness to the fact that your home is a live energy.

My 25 yo daughter was diagnosed was Type 1 diabetes in April of this year. I read everything I could find on the subject. This book by far was the most helpful and encouraging. It helped me realize my daughter can handle this new challenge and live a full, active life.

If Spike and Bo can do it I can do it too!

I gave a copy of Getting a Grip to a twelve year old neighbor boy...he read the book with his mom...they said Getting a Grip gave them a sense of well-being and that it answered so many of their questions. They especially liked the chapters on sports, and academics and out door school!

This book is easy to read. A newly diagnosed parent or child may enjoy this text because of it's simplicity.

As an avid reader of Books on Diabetes, I found it difficult to follow. The writers seemed disoriented and got off track often.

If there are only two books you buy for diabetes type 1 management this is one of the two (the other being "Real Life Parenting of Kids with Diabetes)" written by Spike and Bo's mother (Virgina Nasmyth Loy).
I really enjoyed reading about diabetes from the viewpoint of the person with the disease. Spike and Bo provide practical suggestions on how to integrate diabetes management in a variety of settings: school, surfing, eating out, traving the globe, driving, etc.

Useful basics for any professional whose work with patients requires cooperation. Health practitioners working to improve their ability to assess, motivate, and educate patients as partners for better health outcomes will want to read this honest, practical yet reflective book twice - and then again - while trying out its ideas, practicing, and growing into its approach to care. Useful both for persons in training and already in practice.

It's a bit unusual for me to agree with customer reviews that both praise and criticize a book, but in this case I do. On the one hand, Rollnick et al, have done an amazing job of applying motivational interviewing and stages of change theory to the short interchanges common with patients in a medical setting. For those readers already well-versed in stages of change, this is an excellent and thought-provoking approach. I believe many "counselors" of various stripes would benefit from the applications advocated in this book.

On the other hand, I found the theoretical foundation wholly inadequate. While I appreciated the attempts of the authors to carefully distinguish between evidence-based substantiation of their guidelines and the weaker suggestions based on clinical practice, I felt that there was a preponderance of the latter.

I was also overwhelmed by the repetition included in the three final "application" chapters. Surely there is a better way to present this material! Frankly, the final chapters are so tedious to read that I suspect the average medical professional tends to conclude this volume with a less-than-enthusiastic feeling regarding the guidance.

My advice is to read through chapter 5, at the most, and to consult chapters 6-8 only after encountering specific problems in applying the techniques provided.

not that great, not much "guide"ance

This book gave helpful perspectives regarding doctor-patient communication, but was not very enlightening. The problem might be that it was written from the perspective that the doctor is always correct, and the patient is always some poor sap who needs to be enlightened and trained as you would a child. I don't see this book awakening the human within some budding physician and transforming the physician into some effective communicator. The worst part was how many pages it took to convey helpful information.

This is surprising because the motivational interviewing video training from these authors is exemplary. Maybe the video approach did not transfer well to book.

I gave it more than one star because it does have good strategies in it, and I believe reading it would be better than reading nothing.

Rollnick et all rock!

Health Behavior Change dramatically simplifies and expands the Motivational Interviewing counseling style techniques underlined in Motivational Interviewing by Miller and Rollnick (1991). Health Behavior Change is very easy to read and provides a practical menu of "tools" that could assist individuals thinking and/or committed to behavioral change. Although the authors' targets are medical professionals, the book is a must for everyone involve in health care promotion and/or counseling (prevention workers, outreach workers, treatment advocates, drug and alcohol counselors, psychotherapists). It is also a great book to pass along to family members and anyone concerned in assisting others to move in the direction of change. The most important message: when we are moving in the direction of behavioral change, we need helpers who care, remain non-judgmental and help us tip the balance towards healthier behaviors. Assisting people to set their own realistic goals --however small, is crucial to facilitate meaningful, long lasting change. Love this book!!!!
