A must-read for parents and siblings of children with disabilities

As a retired special needs teacher, I worked with many families with children with disabilities and was able to observe how siblings interacted. "What About Me?" hits the nail right on the head. Siegel describes several patterns siblings may fall into, including the 'parentified child,' the 'overachieving child,' the 'acting-out child,' and the 'withdrawn child,' among others. She points out characteristics parents can watch for, and ways to help children in each classification to better cope with the stresses of growing up with a sibling with a disability. Adult siblings will gain insights into their 'growing-up years' from reading this book, too.

Important read for anyone who is a sibling of disabled.

At my local bookstore, this book literally fell off the shelf at my feet and I knelt down and picked it up. I knew instantly that I had to buy it. I cried when I read it because it reminded me of what it was like being a younger sister of a disabled sibling. Although it brought back a lot of memories and misplaced guilt that I have tried to overcome, the book gives good explanations as to some of the outcomes of growing up in this type of family and the dysfunctions that can occur. I would highly recommend this book and thank the authors for their contribution.

What child doesn't go through some sort of trauma in their lives? Many are traumatized by witnessing friends or families in crisis.

Do you have any idea where to begin to help heal the hurt? Neither did I. Do you feel like you'll say the wrong thing or not support them the way they need it?

Karen Dockrey opened my eyes to the pain and healing solutions, through her experience.

I now feel much better equipped to guide my three children through the daily and lifelong difficulties in life. I was immediately able to implement Karen's words and tools and truly be there for my children and my loved ones.

I passed this book along to the public school mental health expert, who deals with children each day.

I honestly believe the way we cope with our problems effects the lives all around us. Karen shows us the way God intended for us to love and guide his little lambs.

This book would make an excellent and heartfelt gift to a teacher, parent, or anyone who works with or lives with children. I think foster and adoptive parents could help heal the trauma of their children using these methods.

Carry this with you to the hospital!

This is an incredible, "must have" book for helping a child cope with a serious, chronic, or terminal illness. It is written by Christian youth minister, Karen Dockrey, who shares the wisdom gained through one daughter's bout with leukemia, and another daughter's life with hearing loss.

Ms. Dockrey gives specific "plans of action" for dealing with your grief and anger, letting friends help with household and parenting chores, parenting your ill child, dealing with your child's school, and very importantly, how to deal with the numerous hospital stays and procedures (including how to help your child deal with chemotherapy and/or other pain and suffering). She also advises those who wish to help a family in need, such as how and where to offer help.

This book is definitely Christian in nature, filled with scripture references to support every facet of one's struggle with an "uncommon" child. I especially cherish the chapter "Walk on Through Anger." Ms. Dockrey offers very concrete frameworks for coping with the crippling emotions of grief, anger, and jealousy. She gives the reader tender assurances of God's love and presence in the midst of tragedy. There are also the words to help a child come to terms with his or her own death; which later helped my children cope with the sudden death of their 13-year-old cousin.

This book had fallen out-of-print, and was returned in this newer edition because of popular demand by readers like myself. My own copy of this book is four years old, well-loved, and filled with yellow highlighting and a list of scripture references in the end papers. It is in my bag whenever my daughter and I are at the hospital, for the procedures she needs for congenital kidney problems. The wisdom in this book has sustained all of our family through many difficult times.

If you have, or are near to, a child with a chronic or terminal illness, I promise this book will ease your life in some way.

Dr. Hagag has written an important and timely book. Recently the options for cancer treatments have become so vast and diversified that it can be overwhelming for the family and the lay person and aggravate an already stressful situation. This book helps the reader sift through their emotions and feelings and helps them know that they are not alone and that there is help and guidance out there for them. It also provides a valuable tool in understanding the disease and its stages in a thoughtful and simplistic manner that is easily understood. Dr. Hagag carefully guides the reader through the various phases of stress related issues and presents a comprehensive list of information and resources. His material is based on his extesnive experience dealing with cancer patients and their caregivers. All of us in the medical community who diagnose and treat oncology patients appreciate the task that Dr. Hagag took on himself to write this book. This is a great achievement. I recommend the book highly and have alrady recommended it to our medical community and suggested that they acquire several copies of this book so that they are available for the families of patients. I hope that Dr. Hagag continues his research and updates this book, of very important information, that is so relevant to our times, every couple of years.

When I first read this book I was so happy to have something that answered many questions on what it is like to be faced with a loved one with cancer and how to navigate these rough waters. This book gave me the meaning to new words, what is oncology? (study of tumors) and where do I get help i.e., drugs I can't afford. It was like reading a Dr. Spock handbook for me in dealing with cancer in my family. I felt relieved that such a wonderful book arrived on the market. Dr. Hagag comes across as a compassionate person who understands the guilt, insecurity and bewilderment of families faced with this grim disease.

I am a nursing home social worker and was given this book to read for Christmas to know what it is like for my clients and their families. Everything Doug Manning says is SO true and helpful. I wish that I could order them by the hundreds to give out to my families! It is such a quick and easy little reader.

This is the best book I've found on the adult child's dilemma when a family elder's care requires nursing facility placement. It covers a breadth of feelings and responses of both the adult child and the elder, and gives sensitive guidance.

Some readers will agree with Doctor Wood's underlying economic assumptions and others will want to debate them, but the wealth of information in this book, the keen insider's look into our HMO catastrophe and related managed health care issues, is nonpareil. Yes things really ARE as bad as you suspected, and Dr. Wood will accurately document statistics, cases, and legislation that led to the problem. This is an important book, well-written and professionally researched.

I read the new book "Who Will Take Care Of Me When I Am Sick"
and am very impressed with it. It is a sober, direct, and
well-researched account of the subject of today's problems in
medicine. It is neither labored nor contentious. The book does
not address any particular constituency, but it does address
people who might want to learn about a problem of concern to
us all.

I would recommend this book to every parent, especially parents of Austism, ADHD, and ADD children. It truly educates us on everyday items we use in our houses we are not aware of, that are not only toxic to our children but ourselves as well.

A Powerful Story that makes you think, and offers solutions

I was really impressed with Amilya's book. I had heard the story of Ms. Antonetti on Oprah and in various publications like People and Time but never gave it much attention but after I read the book everything she is saying made real life sense. I never realized how the products in my home could kill me and I took it for grated that the products I always considered safe could actually be the cause of my allergies and so many other ailments. The best thing about the book is Ms. Antonetti doesn't just tell a sob story or simply tell us everything in our homes is bad, she actually spells out in detail practical solutions you can implement immediately to make your life safer. A great read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Informative book for women!

In this world of ever-increasing dangers against women, women need to gather as much information as we can in order to keep safe. There are dangerous places; dangerous situations; and dangerous people...how can women live their lives without being in fear all the time?

The book, "The Woman's Safety Handbook," by Marie Turner, aims to help women understand dangerous situations, places, and people. Armed with this information, women can make better judgements in their daily lives. The author also discusses how to avoid certain dangers and how to react to dangerous situations. This knowledge will enable women to make the right choices regarding their safety.

MyParenTime.com recommends "The Woman's Safety Handbook" - besides learning to be more aware of their surroundings, to always show confidence, and to always be in control...women will learn which dangers to avoid, why they're dangerous, and how to remove themselves from possible harm. There will always be more to learn about keeping ourselves safe.

Marie Turner has compiled an excellent resource for the woman who wants to live safely and be only minimally concerned about her safety. Since this book gives in-depth counsel on protecting yourself within interpersonal relationships, every woman should buy one for the women they love and for whom they have fear.

The Woman's Safety Handbook is not a "how to" book as much as it is a definition and clarification of human behaviours that must be circumvented or stopped. My daughter gets one for her birthday!

A proudly post-post-modern academic 'Sexpert', Kath Albury totally relishes the irony of her pop-media job-description and loves her subject to bits. This original, impressively researched book is really smart and really funny -- totally fascinating fun from cover to cover. It's kinda "discourse with laughs" (wait'll you learn about "the Whipple Spot"), but way smarter than just that. Albury leaves no stone unturned in this smooth-reading and sparkling argument for a truly liberated female sexuality in the post-feminist age, and backs it up with some eye-opening research from some of the more exotic corners of pop culture, a solid knowledge of feminist history, and a sprinkling of anecdotal evidence as well. If you don't hail from academia yourself (I don't), fret not! Albury is an earthy, life-loving young populist and makes her material deliciously accessible. Not afraid to take a healthy tilt at some of the icons of feminism's past generations, she busts the female (AND the human) spirit free of a whole lot of obsolete "thou shalt nots" -- her logic is delicious by the way -- in a gutsily optimistic journey round the sexual subway. I found "Yes Means Yes" to be just what its title suggests -- a truly liberating book by a truly liberated woman. It's our choice: why shouldn't life feel good? This book sure made this reader feel that way. And I loved the Mills & Boon cover artwork too.

Yes!

Review Date: 2003-01-09
This is a witty, smooth-reading and brilliantly researched post-feminist argument in favour of guilt-free moral, spiritual and above all sexual freedom in its most optimistic sense. Never has the noble pursuit of corporeal contentment in all its intriguing permutations been expounded in a more erudite, down-to-earth and lighthearted form. That's not to say the subject lacks solemnity: what should take greater priority than freedom? Full of fabulous facts, anecdotal evidence and incisive argument, this book makes a canny academic discourse not only accessible but entertaining for everybody of either (any) gender. It's really funny and really fascinating. The author, a committed and apparently lifeloving feminist, doesn't let the cause itself stand in the way of her occasional arguments against various restrictive theories of previous generations. She takes educated tilts at many of the movement's most famous exponents with calm and occasionally hilariously incisive logic. It's highly educational and engaging, and to me points an articulate way forward for anyone interested in casting off the shackles of sexual dogma. No stone, incidentally, seems to have been left unturned. Intellectual hedonism at its best -- I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Not only did this book help me understand my thyroid and what it does, it helped my primary care giver diagnos my disorder. The book lists all the tests that should be done and what the normal levels should be and it has a great resource listing. It also tells how to trace thyroid problems in families. I finally have a handy resource book at home when I need it!

YOUR THYROID is the single most comprehensive and accessible reference on thyroid problems I have seen. It includes summaries of recent studies that other books lack, it treats the cluster of thyroid problems in a unified way, and raises issues of treatment with the same level of integration. Of particular help to women seeking in-depth information on thyroid issues.
