This is a beautifully, compassionately written little book on learning to honor your body, respect your needs, and take care of yourself. Berry teaches self-nurturance in one of the best ways that it can be fully experienced: on a moment-to-moment, daily basis. She encourages readers to take good care of their bodies through regular physicals, nutrition, exercise, massage, hot baths, and more. Included are delightfully sensual and joyous ideas for self-nurturance, and many little quizzes to see where you are in the process of self-nurturance. Extremely valuable for those who have become disconnected from their bodies, as well as for women who have experienced childhood trauma. A wonderful gift for a close friend or a sister. Most of all--for yourself! Highly recommended.

This book helped me de-program all those messages that make women think they have little value unless they are thin, firm and young. This book opened my eyes. Short, daily meditations teach us to enjoy and respect our miraculous bodies.

I have been to several libraries, and have brought every book home to read. After which I purchased this book. It has been my BIBLE! I would not part with it. I have used many recipes with great sucess. My Mother had been to a specialist for a fungal infection on her finger. Six months of prescription medicine and it had not healed. Tea tree did the job in 3 weeks. I could go on! Great book!

This little book has helped me so often! From carpal tunnel to migrain headaches, Angela has done her homework. She give a balanced report - including conventional therapies as well as herbal, nutritional, and acupressure when appropriate. I find this book very user friendly.

Excellent resource book!!

I have found this book to be invaluable. If you want to consider alternatives to conventional medicine, but at the same time, be aware of those treatments as well, this is the book for you. The author addresses up to 22 alternatives to what she calls "orthodox" or Western medicine for each ailment listed. And she covers the gamut, from foot odor to high blood pressure.

The book concentrates on the area where Western medicine seems least able to cope - chronic illness. If you are troubled by chronic health problems, buy this book.

As a college senior, health education major, I found this book to be reliable, as well as informative. The book cited very credible sources such as the National Institute of Health, which leads me to believe that the information is not bogus. I would recommend this book to any other health educator, or the average consumer.

There's a grim kind of realism in the depiction of how life can end cruelly
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-07
"Conversations At The Nursing Home: A Mother, A Daughter, And Alzheimer's" is a unique work in which author Deanna Shapiro divides the first have of her book to telling stories about her childhood, her mother, and her immigrant Jewish relatives - in a free verse format. In the second half, Shapiro relates the intimately personal story of her Alzheimer afflicted mother's residence in a nursing home, along with their mother/daughter conversations, as well as Deanna's observations of conditions ranging from birds at a feeder, to patients sometimes alarming behavior with each other. There's a grim kind of realism in the depiction of how life can end cruelly for a parent despite all that a loving daughter can do. "Conversations At The Nursing Home" is a welcome and recommended addition to the growing library of personal memoirs with respect to Alzheimer's and the growing concern regarding assisted living and nursing home care in this country.

Journal villed with wisdom

"Conversations at the Nursing Home" is a journal filled with wisdom in the form of poetry and thoughts about the visits to her mother. Deanna Shapiro's mother was a victim of Alzheimer's. She spent the last fourteen months of her life in a nursing home. Ms. Shapiro shares with her readers the conversations she had with her mother during those visits. I found "How It Came About" especially touching.

From the moment I picked up this book I knew it was written for me. Only someone else who has experience Alzheimer's firsthand can truly understand the pain and that the whole family is the victim. Ms. Shapiro points out something that I also learned, we must find humor to be compassionate. My dad is one of seven children; four have the diagnosis of this dreaded disease. At this point, I see no signs in my father. I am the Health Care Surrogate of my Aunt Libby; on her next birthday she will be 89. She has been in a nursing home approximately 10 years, and her mind has outlived her body. This book speaks poignantly to the situation many of us find ourselves in.

Ms Shapiro is an excellent writer and speaks to the heart of the situation. I commend her for sharing her story. My heart aches for her loss and rejoices that she has the strength and spirit to serve her mother. "Conversations at the Nursing Home" is well written. This should be required reading for doctors, nurses and all who have aging parents or who will have someday. I highly recommend it to all.

This Encylopedia is understandable, informative, beautifully written, focused layout making it easy to find your topic of interest, contains rare diseases not easily found for the laymen to purchase in local store i.e. papillademi, and well priced for all the medical research contained. ... An essential book for your family, friends, social, and business associates. The perfect gift for the person you love and want to see stay healthy or become healthier. Instead of unhealthy cookies and cakes to bring your Host and then consumed in minutes, I recommend this "healthy gift of Life", an everlasting colorful book (not costing much more than the baked cookies) and this will really show you CARE about your loved ones more than about your own talents in the kitchen. Think about it.

This Book is written by Cornell-NY Presbyterian Hospital physicians, #1 hospital in the country with the most TOP DOCTORS named by a landslide that any other top hospital. This new report was just published and for the second time this hospital has won this honor and recognized worldwide for it. Forget about larks out there commercializing with their books and TV lectures as they all have many products to "push". What you read in this book is based on world famous Medical PROFESSORS engaged in heavy research and patients. They keep abreast of the newest technology and studies working in the worlds #1 most prestigous hospital/medical university and are medical PROFESSORS in addition to being doctors. They are right there in the hospital in round table meetings with other physicians and in OR and in the classroom...all the time. A big difference from other authors!

Regarding the Library Journal Editorial Review above:

1. First you mention it is a comprehensive encyclopedia and then you state that they covered the subjects more briefly than other books. The fact is that it covers the widest range of topics. Should a reader be interested in that topic, he/she can then read other books devoted just to that particular heading. The whole purpose of this encyclopedia I believe is to introduce the widest range of health topics, to define and describe, illustrate so that the reader is informed and then again can go out and buy a comprehensive book by Cornell doctors regarding Heart Disease specifically if that the case. ..or the reader can call upon the doctors in this book practicing at Cornell Medical Center, part of NY Presbyterian Hospital for medical care and further reading recommendations. How wonderful to have all these topics in one book to educate.

2. Unnecessarily obtuse? I feel the book is very sharp and clean with a one sentence definition in blue. One sentence or the "bottom line" is all that readers have time for when researching unless of course they then decide to buy a book about one subject.

3. You said book written as 12th grade reading level that is high for this type of work. Have not a clue as to what you mean and I feel 12th grade reading level and people with no reading level entitled to books on HEALTH. This book is for everyone whether health care people or nonclinical people and it accomplished that well.

4. First Aid should be in the front? Then it would look like a regular first aid book which it is not. Wait for emergency and then read a book to see what to do? Is that what you would do? I read the first-aid portion already so when I have emergency I will already know what to do because I read it. And because I read it I will also know that first aid listing is in back of book which is just fine. It is a reference and people should read this book so they are prepared when emergency arises and to not wait until you are bitten by a horse to then look for the first aid page to see what to do then. Good that it is "wordy" as you put it to help people understand what to do in emergency procedures as an "overview" BEFORE the emergency occurs and of course during an emergency they can refer to it again just to be sure they treated the injury correctly.

5. I found the photographs to be just right in size and color and for those I wanted to see more vividly, I used a magnify glass so it was perfect and this way more space for everything these doctors/medical professors included. People should always have magnifying glasses in bathroom and kitchen to read expiration dates and first aid clearly. So having magnifying glass around should be no problem for anyone at home or business as business cards often tiny print when reading emails. Just something we all have to live with.

I feel this encyclopedia is EXCELLENT, could not have been better! Besides its shortcomings as you stated, there are NONE.
Respectfully, Barbara T.

I think this is one of the greatest books I've ever read. We've had dogs all of my life, and this book has some wonderful tips on everything you could ever want to know.

Kudos to Kim Campbell Thortnon and Dr. Fortney! Our dog is 2 and is a beautiful Husky, however he really likes to put our hands in his mouth. We've had some awful advice from trainers - even AKC trainers that I wouldn't even consider. This book has helped immensely!

Joanne Parrent, in her COURAGE TO CARE, gives hope to anyone with an elderly parent or other loved one. ... Parrent's carefully thought through, detailed discussion of what to expect and how to handle each eventuality made my own life much easier and less guilt-ridden. I could be in the moment with my mother and stop worrying about whether she would remember what we'd done the minute before. Parrent also made me feel better about employing skilled home workers who lovingly, not only cared for my mother, but also sat with her, talking and playing music. I learned from Parrent's book that we had to live each minute at a time. ...THE COURAGE TO CARE was invaluable to me, as I know it will be for everyone who reads it. In fact, I wish I'd read this important book sooner so that I could have prepared myself for the inevitable. The crash course of reading the book, nonetheless, worked for me, as I know it will for others with loved ones who are losing their mental faculties. Parrent deserves a huge commendation for getting all this material into one book and making it readable, indeed engrossing.

Thumbing through this book with my mother, I felt like a child again. All the desserts I grew up on were pictured here.Seeing the names of the towns where the recipe came from, felt like that person made the treat just for me. I have tried many of the recipes and my family and friends rave of my culinary skills. (thanks to the wonderful recipes) This is a book that has to be tried. It will become a favorite in your home like it has in mine.
