Useful information...to the point

Like the other reviewer, I found this book very helpful and easy to read. Although some may find some of the information to be 'common sense', there are tidbits and supplemental informtion that is not generally known.

Also, much of this information can be used for surviving natural disasters, e.g. hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

With the recent events at Virginia Tech, I found the information very interesting and helpful.

Highly recommended

I read "Attacks of Terror: Surviving the Unthinkable" in just two sittings. It moves along at a good clip and keeps the reader engaged at every point. The author's no-nonsense approach gave me confidence that I am now better prepared to survive a terror attack, regardless of the kind of attack it is.

I have read other books about surviving terror attacks, but many of them were too long or contained information that I would never need. This book cut out all of the filler (and the author says that he intends to do just that) and gets down to what I believe are the essential things that I'll need to know to save my life.

I would recommend "Attacks of Terror: Surviving the Unthinkable" to anyone who is interested in how to prepare for and respond to acts of terror, but it is also a good guide for many of the other things that can happen in emergencies. The recent power outage across my region is a good example... "Attacks of Terror" explained methods of finding transportation, clean drinking water, and what to do to prepare for power outages. Good stuff all the way through.

I give it 5 stars.

This is an excellent book. It goes into a great amount of detail on how to "baby proof" your home, particularly your kitchen and bathroom. All advice is explained simply and concisely, and drawings are included as well. The book also talks about child safety products a parent can buy and guidelines for purchasing infant items such as walkers, strollers, and toys. Information is also included about outdoor safety, holiday safety, and poison prevention. I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned about child safety.

I am three weeks from graduation, and did not have an understanding of pharmacology, but when I found this book in the store, I had to purchase it. Any book written by this series is worth having for an emerging practical nurse. The study guide is comprehensible as well. At least, I'll have a mastery of the drugs by the time I take the state boards!

Just what the doctor ordered

If you grew up in a healthy family where appropriate behaviors were naturally reinforced, and need to teach others who have been too, this book is not for you. But if your childhood family did not reinforce appropriate behavior and you are trying to figure out how to teach it to others, this book gets the essentials very plainly. It seems to me that 90% of all misbehavior can be dealt with calmly with just the first skill, Following Instructions: 1. look at the person, 2. say okay, 3. do what you've been asked, and 4. check back.
This specific instruction has been very useful for me so that when I am trying to get my children to behave, we all have the same definition of what it means to be behaving.
The list I have for following instructions also includes "keep calm in face, voice, and body." I had a great discussion with my children on keeping a calm voice; that it doesn't include yelling, laughing, or crying, or any sound like them. I don't see that item here, but nevertheless there is a good task analysis of each behavior.

Fantastic for my middle school students!

During my first year teaching 6th grade, I had no idea what to do with my students. My classroom management was a disaster and I didn't have a positive culture of respect and understanding. I purchased this book from advice from a good friend and it completely turned my classroom around. It took a while to teach each social skill, but it paid off. I HIGHLY recommend this book for any parent or teacher struggling to manage a child's behavior. It's all about TEACHING those basic skills that we sometimes take for granted.

Prepping for Important Decisions

I'm glad to see a consumer guide on assisted living and long-term care. These are big life decisions and we need to make informed choices. The book will help you sort out options from long-term care, at-home care, organized senior residences, nursing facilities, Medicare and Veterans' Benefits, Medicaid and asset protection, estate planning and long-term care insurance.
I found the information quite helpful. I'd never even heard of a Geriatric Care Manager before. I liked that the book advised checking the state inspection report on a nursing facility.
The Resource Directory at the end provides lots of leads on:
State Offices of Aging
Caregiver Support Groups
Home Care, Community Programs and Senior Residences
National Organizations
State Organizations
Insurance--Long-Term Care
State Departments of Insurance
Legal Assistance
Licensing and Certification
Agencies on Nursing Care Standards
Nursing Facility License and Certification Offices
Nursing Facility and Alternative Residence Organizations
Ombudsman Offices
Reverse Mortgage and Home Equity Conversion Assistance
Viatical Settlement Assistance

As librarian for a Patients' Library in a hospital, I watch for books that may help patients and their family and/or friends cope with debilitating illnesses. I was impressed by the thoughtful variety of activities proposed in this book--especially by the emphasis on maintaining dignity and independence for the patient. The projects described are creative and practical, the approach is empathic, and the love is inspiring. Peope looking for ways to help a seriously ill, confined, person will find gems here.

This is the most practical and informative book about caring for persons with Alzheimer's I have seen. It helped me see the person I am caring for as someone who is trying hard to cope with problems. Now that I can understand more clearly what he is dealing with, I am better able to help him instead of just doing things for him. It is informative, enjoyable and even made me laugh. I loved it and will keep refering to it often.

alzheimer's care--a practical guide

Excellent! I've worked professionally with persons with Alzheimer's disease and their families for almost 20 years and this is one of the most comprehensive and useful books to come along in recent years. Ms. Zgola has done it again! Her first book "Doing Things" set the standards for realistic and meaningful interaction with persons with dementia and her new book continues in the same ground breaking manner. Her insight and practical approaches to caregiving help both the personal and professional caregiver maximize the remaining abilities of the person with dementia. A "must read" for anyone who works with or knows someone with dementia.

Addresses the needs of the caregiver...
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-15
If someone close to you has become sick, disabled or aging is taking its toll, then the Visiting Nurse Association of America offers their advice on how to be a more effective caregiver. They realize that you also need support when providing care to others.

The first chapter explains how you can become a caregiver, the benefits of home care, how your relationship will change, how you should take time for yourself, how to understand how you are feeling and asks: "Are you coping?"

Home Hygiene, healthy eating, bed comfort, maintaining mobility, personal care, wound care, facing death, emergency care and communication is discussed in detail.

There are step-by-step photographs to show you how to change someone's position in bed or how to use a hair washing tray for those who are flat on their backs in bed. Since you will need to order supplies for home care, a complete section of useful addresses also includes Web site information.

There were a few items I had never thought of. If you are pushing someone in a wheelchair, you might want to lower the chair backwards down a stair as the occupant could fall out of the chair and even if you had tilted the chair backwards, it could become unstable. They also show how you can adapt a bathroom for someone who would otherwise need help and installing various items can help you save time.

There is a chart which explains the stages of grief. First you will go through denial, then anger and finally acceptance. Allowing yourself to go through these stages can be very healing and during the unsettling time of a death, you will take these steps, even as a caregiver. There are many sidebars with "case studies" which show how the advice can be used in real life.

A patients bill of rights is included. A glossary of medical conditions helps to explain a few main illnesses. Through reading this book you will gain more information on caregiving skills and how to administer emergency and calming care.

If you feel a bit of anxiety about caregiving, this book will give you many answers to your questions and put your mind at ease.
