This book is an informative guide to almost everything anyone would want to know about Parkinson's Disease. It has in depth information about diagnosis, meds, and a great amount of information on ways to manage this disease. The book was bought for a patient, but the nurses I work with all wanted a copy. In my opinion, the text is at a college reading level--it is not simplified, and readers not familiar with medical terms would want to keep a medical dictionary handy. It would make a very good resource for the patient with a high reading level and for members of the medical team who are looking for resources for patient education on Parkinson's Disease.

Comprehensive, up-to-date, practical guide.

Dr. Duvoisin and Dr. Sage have compiled an excellent guide that takes the reader from the basics of what Parkinson's disease is to the latest theories of the mechanisms of Parkinson's. It also goes ino great detail on the diffrent types of medications for the treatment of the disease. Included are exercise recomendations for the various stages and dietary considerations. This book is not just another Parkinson's disease book - it is a must for Care-giver and patient alike.

security, Richard Watson and Lifetime Guides offer a compact yet
comprehensive resource for crisis preparation. "Peace of Mind" is a
step-by-step guide to being prepared, staying safe, and protecting
valuables in the event of an emergency.
Shortly after the tragedy of 9/11, Watson conceived the idea for a book
that could be used as a personal safety and security guide, helping
readers achieve the peace of mind that comes from planning ahead. The
philosophy behind this book is that "in helping yourself... you are
helping your loved ones" and your community.
Information is power, and Watson's book is a powerful tool that should

information which make it easy to read. Subheads, icons, and bulleted
lists highlight the most important topics discussed in each chapter.
"Complete" icons identify questionnaires that help you collect

alert readers to critical facts.
"Peace of Mind" is a valuable and effective resource; it is a must-have
for every household.

The events and tragedies of 9/11 created a sense of urgency in his life
and a passion for this project. The information in this book reflects
not only his personal life experience and wisdom, but is the outcome of
extensive research and consultation with professionals in a variety of
fields, including medicine, firefighting, and law.

I picked up a copy of this book from www.lifetimeguides.com and have not put it down. This is exactly what my husband and I need to get our life in order. I recommend this guide to everyone - especially if you have young kids. It is informative and easy to use and will help you start doing the things that you have always known that you should do to keep you and your family safe.

Solid information for every family.

Peace of Mind is one of those books everyone should not only read, but go through with the entire family. It is a workbook to organize your life. Completely. We're so laid back about organizing our records, credit cards, insurance policies, car records, leases, etc. Yet there is no way of knowing when we or our family members need to have easy access to those records. It could be as simple as not having a legal will -- a friend paid over seventy-thousand in unnecessary taxes when his father passed. The book goes through a lot of "life-organizing" information that we all should go through. It's a must have, must read, and must fill out the forms, AND tell your spouse, kids, relatives, where the information is stored and how to get access to it. Highly recommend. Also download the forms from them. It is a step in the right direction for every parent.

Snappy, straight answers about kids' ills, and fun to read

Midway through Pediatric Home Companion the author sticks her neck out and answers the question: "What do you do when your [the author's] kids have colds?"

"At bedtime," she writes, "I frequently drug them with Benadryl. . . . (Sometimes I take it instead!") Dr. Wiseman gives straight answers to the big questions about childhood health problems. That's what makes this book easily understood. It's snappy and fun to read too.

I was lucky rearing my three kids. Neither their mother nor I knew a lot about taking care of children (There weren't any good books on the subject then.) So, we worried a lot! But they grew up healthy, smart and sometimes smart-elecky! Lisa, the only girl, went to medical school. I was very proud. Now she has three fantastic children of her own, but she was too modest to put their picture on the cover of her book, PEDIATRIC HOME COMPANION!

Truly oustanding - well written - where else can you get information on the nutrition value of twinkies?Loved the humour mixed with the message - this is one book that all parents should read cover to cover. One problem with the book though is that it challenges some of the "old wives tales" and threats my Mom used on me - good thing I didn't have it when I was young - Read it - you'll love it.

Written w/humor necessary for (sane) & successful parenting

Dr. Wiseman offers a no holds barred approach to her philosophies on taking care of children. It's easy to panic when your kids get sick; this book helps you know when it's legitimate to panic and when it's not. Dr. Wiseman reminds us that kids are pretty hardy souls, and that taking care of their health and well being with commonsense and love usually are pretty much all they need (even when we screw up sometimes). You'll enjoy getting the information in a readable format, as well as the humor with which the book was written.

That's what it should be called. This book is packed with pilates exercises that can be done in one's home. My fiancee and I practice pilates together using the details found in this book.

What I like especially is the way the author provides more challenging and similarly less challenging variations to suit the fitness and flexibility level of the user.

I highly recommend this book...over 300 pages, dozens of exercises, plenty of photos, easy to follow. It's also value priced...in this day I am glad to a useful book priced reasonably.

After searching for books in this subject, I was very pleased to finally find a book that went into the depth of not only restoring, but plane and other tool usage. This book was intended for the antique tool collector who chooses to use their tools not place them on a display shelf and accept them "as is." If you are looking for old tools needing repair for many more years of use, then this is the book for you. Michael Dunbar has done an excellent job putting his knowledge on paper for the reader's benefit.

Ideal for experts or beginners alike.

I only recieved this book this morning, I began reading and can now thouroughly recommend this book to anyone who, for example has ever seen Norm Abram at work and thought 'Hey that's not fair. He's got $10,000 worth of power tools at least' Well this has to be the guide for those who wish to find, restore, and use old tools. I grew up with quality handtools around me and can tell this guy knows what he's talking about. The majority of this book is dedicated to planes - but I never realised just how many kinds there are! A must for anyone you know who heads for the 'rusty tool box' at flea markets and yard sales. I'd love to know what you think about this book too. Happy reading!

Dunbar's book is one of the best when it comes to repairing just about any antique tool. He patiently and thoroughly describes how to repair most any hand tools you'll come across. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn how to restore antique hand tools. It should be noted that Dunbar now uses a different method to sharpen plane and chisel irons, etc. However, this is widely available in magazines. Highly recommended.

This book, A Safe Haven? is a must have for anyone who is looking into buying, building or owns a home. It not only defines in a understandale manner different types concerns to be aware of (such as asbestos, radon, lead and underground tanks), but it guides the reader to questions that should be asked to the original owner of the house as well. It definitely informed me about many things that I was not aware of, and would not even think to be concerned about, yet are very critical to know. I read this book before closing on my house, and it made my husband and I forewarned about certain potential situations rather than forearmed with lots of unexpected work and bills!

This unique book blends personal experience with research and case histories to address common concerns about home safety and environmental safety. From radon and asbestos to risk assessments, hazardous waste and poor water, and health risks of community problems, A Safe Haven? provides a general homeowner's guide to assessing hazards.

A Must-Have Book for Homeowners!

Review Date: 2001-02-24
This book not only brought to my attention the many hidden and common hazards associated with owning a home, but it was written in a clear and concise way for the layperson to understand. With the environmental dangers increasing in our world today, the topic is one we can no longer ignore or depend on others to take responsibility for. The health and safety of our families is always one of our greatest concerns and "A Safe Haven" thankfully points out ways in which we can eliminate or at least reduce the possibility of harm to those we live with and love. By educating yourself for a minimal cost, you can avoid much larger expenses in the long-term. Also a necessity for anyone associated with the house building process.

If you have ever searched for a tender God in the teeth of an angry God, you will find the tender God in this book by Congregational minister Craig Rennebaum who often walks the streets of Seattle searching for anyone who seems to be lost. The rest of us fuss over homelessness as a civic or sociological or psychological or moral problem that is inconvenient and should be swept away for our sake. But Craig Rennebaum sees the homeless person as someone he may be able to help if he plays his cards right. Each homeless person is a story he wants to read. His stories of reaching the unreachable are my favorite parts of this book which also serves as a factual answer to the whys of homelessness today.

Chapllain Rennebohm is first of all a great story teller. Through these stories and his reflections we come to know and care for persons who experience a mental illness. In Craig's patience with those whom he meets on the street, we learn the value of patience in our lives also. As he reports the working of the Spirit, we can find the Spirit at work in our lives as well. An engaging and inspiring account.

dr. bongar's work is especially helpful for mental health professionals to help them understand and appreciate the experience through which the prospectively suicidal patient finds him or herself. like most books published by the apa, it is fairly exhaustive on research (although this review is written 4 years after publication and i acknowledge that a current revision would be welcome in a couple years), perhaps a bit theoretical, and does not provide succinctly written summaries for a busy professionals. it outlines clinical considerations and potential courses or action. it examines legal issues relevant to clinical intervention and failed intervention. the recommendations dr. bongar makes are excellent. this is not, in my opinion, a book for families or patients. i highly recommend this book for academicians and clinicians who wish to better understand and want to more effectively manage potentially suicidal situations. at $33, i think that the information i learned more than justified the purchase.

Essential reading for all practicing clinicians
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-16
The Suicidal Patient by Bruce Bongar provides a much-needed manual for all practicing clinicians. Why do I say all? Well, if you are a clinician the odds are that at some point in your career you will encounter a suicidal patient. In fact, according to Bongar, even "student therapists have a one in three chance of experiencing a patient suicide or suicide attempt during their training years."

By taking a few simple precautions you can greatly minimize your chance of being sued. But, I believe, even more importantly, Bongar champions the idea that if you provide high quality care the odds of you being able to prevent a suicide dramatically increase. According to Bongar, high quality care happens when you have a real understanding of both clinical and legal issues and you apply this knowledge and tailor your approach to each individual.

Obviously you're a therapist, and not a fortuneteller, and so mistakes will happen. Why not learn the basics ahead of time so that you don't make stupid mistakes?

If you effectively deal with a suicidal patient, and he or she improves, then you may have just helped someone save his or her own life. I can't think of a better feeling than that, which is why Bongar provides you with a manual to effectively deal with the suicidal patient. Take responsibility for your practice and prepare for the worst because by doing so you may achieve the best outcome of all.

With that said, I want to be clear about the format of this book. It is written for clinicians. If you are looking for a self-help book this is definitely not for you. Bongar is a therapy researcher and so like much therapy research the book is somewhat dry. This is to be expected since the list of citations alone span thirty-eight pages. The fact that all this voluminous literature has been synthesized into one book is impressive indeed and one only need consider how dry it would be to read all the primary sources to realize the service that this book provides.

Specifically the book provides:
1. A history of suicide research and current theories and research in the field.
2. A comprehensive section on the legal issues involved in treating suicidal patients.
3. Many methods to assess patient risk including assessment protocols and case histories.
4. Best practices for treatment in both inpatient and outpatient settings
5. A section on risk management that includes suggestions for unfortunate event that the patient carries out a suicidal act.
