My hometown yoga instructor had to have her own copy after viewing mine. She said the book contained 20 years of wealth of knowledge, without sorting thru many volumes of books.

Very specific and very well thought out. Not just for a teacher, for anyone developing a personal practice.

Teaching Yoga: The Big Picture
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-19
This book is a great overview for yoga teachers, especially those just getting started -- from ethics to class sequencing, basic (70) poses to know, 120 common ailments and recommended practices & contraindications, muscles you need to know, and business considerations (how to charge, how to market, & how to protect yourself).

She offers a wonderful appendix which includes sample liability releases, student questionaires, and expense & record keeping forms. Also, there is an abbreviated Sanskrit glossary of some of the most common poses/phrases & terminology. All of this in the light of integrity, adherence to the yamas & niyamas in your personal and professional life.

If a teacher training course had to use only have one book, this one would come pretty close to fitting the bill. At 238 pages, nothing super in depth obviously, but wow, what a great overview! A definite must for any new (or aspiring) yoga teacher.

This is a fantastic book - very comprehensive and inspiring though I was surprised to hear that yoga teacher training in europe takes 5 years!. In the U.K. you can do a distance learning course in 6 months and there is no professional body to regulate teaching standards etc as far as I know. (Also I do think it is possible to be a good yoga teacher without spending a year studying anatomy as long as you know your asanas and your limits and respect your students). This book is a real asset to anyone who is a new teacher and has re-awakened my interest in yoga as a way of life.

Considering that caregiving responsibilities will impact every single person at some point in their life, this is the resource guide to own!! It truly is a "Caregiver's Companion" and a must-have for every caregiver. When the baby-boomers become aged (and it's starting to happen), a huge percentage of the population will require caregiving. This book gives resources and checklists, along with anecdotal stories from the people in the trenches. What a great book. I highly recommend this as a gift for you, your family, your friends - ANYONE who has to deal with the complexities of caregiving. Bravo!

Excellent guide for family caregivers

This book is a complete reference for family caregivers. Editor, Beth Witrogen McLeod, founder of the National Family Caregivers Association, presents an excellent guide for family caregivers. Rosalynn Carter has written a forward highly recommending the book to "family caregivers and those who support them".
McLeod includes clues for realizing when parents and older relatives need help and how to go about helping in a sensitive, understanding way. She provides checklists for all the many facets of caregiving such as gauging the skills of a patient, questions to ask the medical professionals, ways to arrange the household for easier access and whether the caregiver is taking care of herself.

There is an extensive list of other resources at the back of the book.

Now that I'm on my second go-round as a caregiver for a parent, I thought I knew the ropes fairly well. So I wasn't expecting much new information from this book.

I was wrong.

There's plenty of up-to-date help in this volume -- from assistance with legal affairs through taking care of the caregiver -- especially when that caregiver is you. While it does not cover any particular topic in great depth, it is a well-thought-out overview of the caregiving process.

If you're just getting started as a caregiver, this book can give you plenty of solid help!

This book is absolutely necessary when the time comes to think about your parents, and their aging, and what to do just in case.
How do I approach this w/ my parents? or , what child will be responsible for the arrangements?, or, why me?

This book takes you thru the difficult questions, situations (especially w/ other siblings) and any thing else one WILL come across when deciding elder=care and how it applies to YOUR PARENTS. Don't forget the video companion. Beatiful ...

state of the art book for all anesthesiology residents for every day life and board exams, one of the best books i have read, concise, pertinent, easy to read and to the date.
not a book to start with in anesthesiology, but it contains answers to the questions you can't find the answer, and a very good last read before clinical exams.

Finally the book that I have been waiting for. Two years after graduation for CRNA school I have been looking for a book to sort of "light my fire" again and Yao and Artusio's did it. Not only is this book filled with a great amount of knowledge, but also it is an inspiration to those of us who want to excel in anesthesia beyond the banality of induction and wake-ups. In the workforce, we as anesthesia providers, can become repetitive doers based on what work for us on a daily basis, but this book provides the key reasoning about why doing this versus doing that. The reading flows very well and after each chapter you are filled with a knowledge wandering how come no one explained it to you like that before. This book is a most for the serious anesthesia provider who wants to excel.

I do agree that this textbook is a very well-done, well written book with a lot of value for anesthesiologists. However, as a tool for oral board study it is actually a bit too comprehensive and inclusive. Take my word for it, during your oral board exam you are not going to be asked about histologic changes in the bronchial mucosa of the asthmatic or the synthetic pathway of catecholamines. The person studying for the oral anesthesiology board doesn't have time to waste learning material that he or she doesn't need to know. I recommend instead Clinical Cases in Anesthesia by Reed. Same format, much more focused on the material that the anesthesiologist must know for the oral exam.

A Must fot the Oral Boards

You've passed the written boards - Congratulations! Now that you're sober again it's time to start thinking about the orals and this puppy is a big part of the solution. It's set up in an oral board question and answer style. Simply read the question -without looking at their answer- and then answer it out loud like you would if the examiner were sitting there in front of you. I know it's weird but it really does help to also practice in front of a mirror to eliminate all of the bizarre facial tics you never knew you had. Now look at the answer. Were you right or even close? Good! Keep going, you'll hone your style to a razor's edge. This technique, along with some good mock oral practice with those attendings who know how to give them, will have you spraying champagne over your friends and family like you've won the Grand Prix of Monaco the night after!

For the last five nights in a row since we got this book from the library, my little girl requests this book by saying "book! key!" or "bear!" before her naps and night time sleep. And when we get to the last page, she says "key!" and we go back to the beginning. Plenty of things to look for in the wonderful pictures.

This was my daughter's favorite book from about 6 mos until 12 mos. At 16 she prefers longer, more involved books, but still picks the bear books several times a week. She really likes to find the cat on each page. We also love Bear's Busy Family and Bear in Sunshine. I don't feel Bear in a Square is nearly as good.

One of the cute "bear" series, in a sturdy board book. Perfect for the pre-reading child, we tour bear's brightly colored home, rhyming as we go. The floorplan at the end is cute, and it's fun to watch your child puzzle out which room is which--after all, we're looking at the rooms from above. A great, reasonably priced gift for the pre-reading child.

Bear's home is a bright, whimsical dream cottage. It is full of cheerful Tricia-Guild-type decor (purple floors, red-and-white checkered floors, green walls, fuchsia stair railings), loyal family (Bear's cat is always with him), and all the traditional trappings of "cozy" -- flower boxes, umbrella stands, tea cups, toys, a big squishy sofa, books, family photos, a bubblebath, a teddy bear, and glowing candles. Bear himself always has a little smile on his face. The floor plans at the end of the book are charming. One of my family's favorites.

"Bear at Home" is a very colorful and satisfying book for preschoolers. Basically it involves a tour of bear's house (he lives like a human does, and his pet cat also appears on every page) and his activities in each room, told in rhyming couplets. "This is the hallway where bear climbs the stairs... and this is the library with big, cozy chairs." The book's beginning invites us to "open the door, and what do you see?" which makes for great one-on-one sharing with toddlers, who will be glad to point out the various objects found in the house. The art work is simple, appealing, and very colorful, right down to the endpapers. Best of all, there is a map of bear's house at the end of the book showing all the rooms we have visited. (I would have loved that as a kid, and would have wanted to draw a map of my own house!) A good book for kids ages 1-3.

All things black and slimy. I loved your book Dr. Money. Lets add the nasty Chaetomium next time also neurogenic fungus.
How about the politics of the wood industry and Dr.Jeff Morrell who appears to be teaching that "mold and mildew do not cause wood rot". Is this related to the wood industry and building industry not wanting mold reported in inspections and promptly forgetting about soft rots while endangering occupant health? I have this in print from the State of Washington Department of Agriculture- what fun we could have with them.

Review Date: 2004-06-21
If Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) were reincarnated as a mycologist, he would have written this book. Dr. Money's liberal dose of irreverent humor makes his very detailed, erudite book on toxic mold easy and enjoyable to read.

In the preface, Dr. Money says, "Widespread fears about black-mold toxins are a product of the new millennium and deserve a critical, balanced, scientific inquirty. Though I cannot promise anything that boring, I do hope I can dispel some of the media myths about these microorganisms while identifying the real threat that can be posed by a few of these fungi."

Stachybotrys plays a key role in this book. In Chapter 5, Dr. Money discusses the 1993 outbreak of pulmonary hemmorraging (bleeding lungs) in poor children living in Cleveland. When Dr. Money began his book, he first thought that stachybotrys might be an innocent victim of media hype. However, he discovered that stachybotrys chrtarum can produce highly toxic spores. Along with the Cleveland outbreak, he discusses an outbreak of stachybotryotoxicosis in the Soviet Union in the 1940's, and illnesses linked to Stachybotrys among horticulture workers in Europe. Dr. Money also talks about the science used to evaluate the links between Stachybotrys and illnesses, and some of the political issues at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that caused the CDC to soft-pedal Stachybotrys.

This book has a thorough, although daunting, discussion of how allergic reactions are triggered in individuals. The body's allergic reaction is, as Dr. Money points out in Chapter 3 -- Carpet Monsters, an intricate mechanism. Until I read this book, I didn't realize that four types of cells primarily respond to allergens - dendritic cells, T lymphocytes (T cells). B lymphocytes (B cells) and mast cells. Dr. Money talks about each cell type's responses to allergens, and the creation of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies.

"Your Verdict, Please" (Chapter 6) is an overview of mold litigation. It has a very thorough discussion of what happened to Melinda Ballard's home, the resulting litigation, and a breakdown of what the jury awarded Ms. Ballard - and why. Dr. Money also discusses the reduction of the $32 million award to $4 million. This chapter also has a good discussion of how the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Daubert affected the Ballard case.

Dr. Money also discusses mycological warfare -- and he is not using the term as an analogy to what happens in a house with mold. He is discussing the development of mycotoxins as a weapon in armed conflicts.

A Great Book!

Nicholas Money is an amazing writer who manages to entertain and instruct at all times. I found myself learning and laughing from cover to cover. "Carpet Monsters and Killer Spores" is a book for everyone. Not only does it provide a wonderful introduction to the study of fungi; it explores the way our lives and destinies are inextricably linked to those of the fungi. Homeowners, attorneys, and people in the insurance industry will find much to enjoy (and fear!) in this book, as will biology enthusiasts, naturalists, and readers of all persuasions.

As Money explores the "black molds" that have received so much attention in our news media, he also explores the cultural event surrounding their reception. The book is fascinating not only as a biological work, but also as a sociological study. Thorough research and diligent attention to detail provide Money with a unique, scientifically grounded perspective, and his quirky humor will have you laughing out-loud all the way through.

Importantly, Money does not provide any easy answers to the pressing questions raised by black molds. Instead, responsibly, he shows us what science knows and what it does not know, giving us a sound, factual basis for interpretation of the many wild claims we see in the media. The only negative factor involved with this book is the fact that readers everywhere have had to spend many hours (and dollars) cleaning their bathrooms like maniacs and replacing moldy shower curtains after reading it!

Sally Hughes Smith's first-person narrative walks us along a path of joy, loss, love, and acceptance. "The Circle" is a soul-searching blend of romantisim and pragmatism in which she shares with us the compassionate plan of action that she and her family implemented to cope with what is becoming a crisis for more and more families. As a practicing psychotherapist I have recommended her book to many of my collegues working with families who have loved ones diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. This book is destined to become a useful tool for most, if not all of us.

A warm, positive, honest account of the emotional journey of dealing with a parent who is aging with memory loss. Sally wrote this as a diary and friends suggested she publish it. Everyone has something to learn from this book as we are all aging. I recommend that health professionals read this , esp medical students but really it applies to all families as we will all have to deal with the loss of a parent at some stage. A very worthwhile book, and it makes a great gift.

I read Sally's book and immediately passed it on to my mother. Aside from enjoying the family bits, it prompted her to make sure certain aspects of her will were in place. Sally's gifts as a writer are apparent in her anecdotal treatment of her response along with her family's to her mother's disease. She brings light to the dark and in the end alerts us to our final responsibility as a parent.

Sally Hughes Smith has done a service for all of us who have aging parents as she tackles hard issues with robust honesty, vivacity, humor, and a beautiful grace. I love the freshness of her journal writing as it allows the reader into the immediacy of her wonder and dismay as events unfold, as it reveals the ache of a long love for her mother, and as she reveals a slow awakening within herself. The fact that all of the proceeds of this book go to medical research for Alzheimer's reflects a generosity already palpable in this book. It is rare to find something so genuine, unedited, eruptive, and real.

Ok, so my kid (6 yrs old) asked me if he could read this book instead of playing with Legos. Yeah, I'm still reeling from that. If that's not a glowing recommendation, I don't know what is. This book is like a field guide with all the boring stuff stripped out. It dives right into the information that kids really need -- all the things that will make you itch, swell up or scream mommy! And how to identify them, avoid them or treat them if your curiosity makes you "forget" the first two things. And the cartoons scattered throughout? Brilliantly twisted - in a kid appropriate manner of course!

Wonderful book, that removes fat , and leaves you smiling!

What a great book, I loved all my favorite recipes, slimmed down-and they still manage to taste great! I would recommend it to anyone. I love the veggie pizza recipe, the teriakyi beef, the stroganoff...wonderful!!!! Thanks Dawn!!!!!

I have owned this cookbook for at least 10 years and use it often. I have yet to make something from this cookbook that was not great! Some of my favorites; Chopped Tomato Salad, The Rocky Mountain BBQ Sauce, Cheese Blitzes, Old Country Quiche, Cinnamon Rolls, New York Cheesecake, Ruthie's Apple Pie, the pie crust...I could go on and on! A great variety of recipes for casual cooking to more impressive entertaining dishes. It's my go to cookbook always!

This item has recipes without all the fancy stuff. So it has things I actually cook. After seeing a friend of mines' book I bought a couple of copies and give them to other friends.

I love this cookbook for its detailed directions and even more for the delicious recipes. But I also love browsing it for the "sidebar" asides giving the history of some of the dishes or the regions where they originated. Beautifully illustrated, as well. Very comprehensive, with lots of entrees, sides, appetizers, desserts, etc. The ease of preparation varies, with plenty for novice and experienced cooks alike.

Terrific!

Alright, I'm biased. I worked on this book as the computer consultant and as a contributor of a couple of recipes. It was the bext job I ever had. Not only did I get paid to help with the design, formatting and creation of the book. I also got to eat. And eat. And eat. Terrific recipes from all over the country and most of the recipes are adapted for healthier eating. But where necessary, the old "full o' fat and sodium" recipe is given. It's pretty much the only cookbook I use these days.

I'm not sure, but I'll bet this is one of the few cookbooks where you can find everything from the sandwiches served at high tea at the Plaza Hotel in NYC to gut-burning Texas Chili straight from the Lone Star State.

damn good cook book

I am extremely selective of any cookbook. This book has a wonderful variety of recipes and ALL are very quick and easy, which is great for us busy parents who believe in a well-rounded, balanced and wholesome meal. That's hard to do these days AND in this economy. I'm not a "chef" by any means but try to put out very "taste-bud" pleasing meals. This cookbook allows great meals on a budget w/very little cooking time or mess. You will love the extra bonus info that comes with the book. Little short bits that explain the origin of some of the recipes, cooking tips (very helpful:),and such a variety of recipes in each catagory of food. **Great taste w/clear & easy instructions**
