I just found out that my grandson is allergic to peanuts. This book was FULL of great information- although a little scary. It's fairly short and very easy to understand. Written for the non-medical person.

Got this book on reccomendation from my Childs Allergist. It is a very informative and easy to understand book. My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy at 12 months just from my aunt kissing him after eating peanuts so we were shocked at the reaction to peanuts he has. This really helped us to understand and relax somewhat.

Great for a new parent

My son was recently found to have peanut and fin fish allergies. This book was great for both my husband and I. Easy to read and very informative. Every parent who has a child with peanut allergies must read it!

It's the best "Peanut Allergy" book out there!

This is a great little book. It's a fast and easy read, but some how it manages to pack a ton of accurate material in there anyway. I bought a copy to give to my peanut allergic sons' teachers - and they actually read it. That tells me that it truly is an easy read - and that isn't a slam on teachers - it's just that they usually don't have time to read any of the info I bring them on peanut allergy.

It isn't hysterical - it doesn't call for peanut bans in school - but it does take it very seriously and gives the reader the information necessary for them to make their own decisions about how to deal with the allergy.

Very thorough and easy to read. Informative

This is the most thorough book I've read on peanut allergies. You probably won't find this information on the internet, because most of the answers are substantiated with trials performed by experts.

The book is set up in a question and answer form. All the questions are listed in the contents with pages showing where to find the answers. It is also easy to read, so you won't be stumbling over annoying medical jargon.

My wife and I found this book informative and inspirational. Cheryl's book has created much discussion between my wife and I about what we eat, how we eat and how we live. We have become more pro-active in our own health because of "Positively Ageless". This book is a gift to ourselves and we want to thank Cheryl for sharing this wonderful gift with us. And how about those great delicious recipes! Thank you Cheryl!

She lets you know what and how to eat to stay healthy, vital, vigorous, --and ageless. This is a great reference book for women of all ages; shop with it and cook with it!

That's what I want to be --'positively ageless'. Thanks.

Finally! A book by someone who's knowledgeable about the subject of antiaging nutrition. I saw her on television and she really knows her stuff.
I've read a few popular antiaging books and I liked Positively Ageless better because it is written from the perspective of a nutritionist who is also a professional chef. She makes the subject easy and logical to understand. Her recipes sound and taste great. I even made two of them myself so far which is a first for me.

My daughter was born at 27 weeks and this book explained everything from the heart surgery to the best way to build a good relationship with the nurses. The information is layed out in a way that makes it easy to read here and there. Everything is described in simple comprehendable terms. This is one of the best books I read while looking to learn more about my premature son and his experience in NICU. During such a stressful time, I believe this book was a manageable resource to quickly educate myself on what to expect. I was on bedrest prior to delivery and began reading it then. I finished reading it during my son's NICU stay, but still go back to review topics/issues related to raising a premature baby (particularly the breastfeeding information). I HIGHLY recommend this book for parents and loved ones of premature babies.

THE History of Omega-3's

This book provides an excellent historical perspective on the discovery of and current understanding of Omega-3 and -6 Fatty Acids. I think it is extremely valuable for anyone interested in why diseases of the heart and diabetes are so rampant today.

Unfortunately, it could have done better at helping us understand "what we can do to replace them". The American public needs better resources on how to make changes rather than understanding so much of the "why" behind them.

Definitely worth the read, unless you seeking avenues for changing your diet to improve your intake of Omega-3's.

Fascinating reading, couldn't put it down. A well documented history of the research on omega 3's,6's,&9's with an index. I've read many articles on the omega fats, this filled in the gaps & explained much that I didn't understand before. From a diabetic's point of view, this is an important read. Don't be intimidated by the chemistry in this book, the author explains it very well. Glad I own it!

The evolution of a fascinating idea

Review Date: 2008-04-13
Susan Allport is neither a physician nor a nutritionist, but a journalist by profession. As she points out, this may make her less biased and able to take a broader perspective in recounting the development of, and explaining in lay terms, a dietary concept with far-reaching health implications: that an imbalance of certain essential fatty acids in our diet is a fundamental factor in the development of many chronic diseases, particularly coronary heart disease.
Michael Pollan, also a journalist, cites and summarizes her book in his better-selling review of modern nutrition, In Defense of Food. This is what led me to purchase Allport's book. Unfortunately, she does not have Pollan's gift for prose, but by examining in greater depth what he refers to as a possible "unifying hypothesis" of the effects of diet on modern disease, she makes up in content for whatever she lacks in style. Even if omega-3 fatty acids do not ultimately prove to be as critical to human health as she suggests, her book is worth reading as a fascinating account of how new insights into the role of nutrition in health are still being worked out, and the time and research it takes to overcome existing dogma. For practical application of these ideas, with less emphasis on their historical evolution, I would recommend Artemis Simopoulos' The Omega Diet.
I particularly liked the way she told the story from the point of view of the maverick researchers involved, showing how much patience and dedication it takes to not just discover new ideas, but have them heard and accepted. Many interesting facts are sprinkled along the way, from the rarity of diabetes among Eskimos, to the differences in cell membranes between emus and hummingbirds, and why we should care. Bravo to the people who ask these questions and to Susan Allport for informing us of the answers!

My wife speaks English as a second language. I bought this book in English based on references from several friends who are first time child bearers. They spoke highly of it for good reason. It has everything you could ask for about childbirth in an easy to read format, plus the index allows you to hunt for items of interest without reading the entire book. I would recommend it to you regardless of the language you prefer.

Qué Se Puede Esperar Cuando Se Está Esperando: (What to Expect When You're Expecting, 3rd Edition)

This book is a must for the future parents, especially the mother, and it is in both English and Spanish; my wife has been reading the Spanish version and she has been learning and preparing herself for her pregnancy with confidence, since she reads one week ahead of what her situation is going to be and what challenges she has to prepare as the weeks keep adding up and the baby keeps growing.

I will recommend this book to both the future parents, the father can understand all the symptoms that the future mother will go thru week after week and also, he can aleviate her situation by assisting and by providing moral support.

"The Raw Revolution Diet" markets itself as a weight loss diet, which in some ways is a shame because the second half of the book is one of the best raw foods "cookbooks" on the market. If you're looking for a 5-star raw foods cookbook of mostly beginner and intermediate level recipes, then do not hesitate to buy this book! However, most people who come to Living Light (Cherie Soria's raw foods school) and need to lose weight, do lose weight on a raw foods diet.

The first half of the book is what I consider to be a 4-star book on vegan raw foods nutrition, weight loss and lifestyle. While I definitely recommend this book for raw foods nutrition and weight loss, the truth is that the very intelligent and knowledgeable vegan dietitians, Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina are capable of doing a more thorough job than presented in this book. Although they no doubt did many hours of research and discuss many studies on the advantages of a raw foods diet, the book references none of them! Without so much as a footnote or even author name, the reader is unable to evaluate these studies for her/himself.

As with their other books on vegan (and vegetarian) nutrition, Brenda and Vesanto cover macro (fat, protein and carbohydrates), and selected micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) of interest to vegans. Unfortunately, while their level of coverage may have sufficed about 10 years ago, there are a few gaps for the 2009 reader:

*Vitamin B12 - While otherwise extensive coverage, not a word is mentioned about which form to buy as a supplement. Health food stores commonly sell the better absorbed/shorter shelf-life methylcobalamin, as well as the less expensive cyanocobalamin. As a vegan, I'd be interested to know if the authors recommend only the methyl form, or if they also find the cyano acceptable.

*Vitamin D - The authors mention that vitamin D supports bone density, and that a lack may be linked with depression, certain types of cancer, and multiple sclerosis. However, despite there being extensive research and anecdotal evidence of vitamin D preventing colds and influenza (more than a year prior to publication), there is no mention of this. Also, they mention the "vitamin D winter" when it's difficult to obtain enough sunlight to produce vitamin D, but don't give specific information on this. The information is available as what months constitute vitamin D winter for various latitudes and exactly how much vitamin D supplementation and skin exposure is recommended for both light and dark skin in these latitudes.

Curiously, in a book about raw foods nutrition, there is no discussion of any benefit a raw foods diet may convey due to the dietary enzymes not being destroyed in the cooking process.

Despite my quibbles with the nutrition section, I find it otherwise complete and helpful. I especially like the tables, listings of raw foods highest in calcium, and iron. There's a helpful 4-page table giving, among other things, the number of calories, and protein grams in many raw foods, but curiously the number of fat grams are missing. (Although they do give you the number of calories from fat.) Most importantly, they provide sensible and specific guidelines for eating a raw foods diet that keeps people from making the mistake of gorging on nuts and seeds while considering cooked food to be "poison" and thus always foregoing steamed vegetables and cooked legumes.

I would have given this book 5 stars for the fabulous recipes and the mostly complete nutrition section, but they do not give caloric nor any nutritional information in the recipes! Occasionally they will mention in the comment section that a dish packs in certain nutrients, but it is not presented on a recipe-by-recipe basis. In a book touting itself as a weight loss program, I find that inexcusable.

Going back to the recipes, IMO that is the number one reason to buy this book. As a graduate of her raw foods school, I can tell you Cherie Soria is both a genius and perfectionist when it comes to her recipes.
I've made some of the recipes at home and others as a student at the school, and with a bit of toning down of Cherie's generous amounts of onions and peppers, love every one I've tried! This includes the Not Tuna Salad, Onion Rings, Zoom Burgers, Zucchini Hummus, Garden Blend Soup and more. (Note to Cherie - The Basic Nut Cheese is delicious, but it calls for probiotic powder, which most people are not familiar with. If there's a second edition, I think you should mention what this is and suggest a brand.) I want to give special mention to the Creamy Kale-Apple Soup and the Bananas I-Scream. Both recipes are amazingly simple and amazingly delicious.

Not just good, but amazing recipes!

This is an excellent book. The recipes are so delicious my taste buds were going crazy over every dish I made from this book. Seriously! Also, it gives some great information about a raw diet. I particularly appreciated the menu plan to get started. It was a nice way to plan out a few days to help get in the groove of going raw. ALSO the recipes are all pretty simple, so you don't have to go buy wacky ingredients. Once you've modified your grocery list, you can easily make everything in this book.

Since I am an experienced therapist and core energetics international instructor, we are also using the method with large groups of students with wonderful results. I believe your are correct that trauma can provide a necessary shock that serves our evolving consciousness if there is understanding and support for the body processes as well as the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of recovery. You have written a concise book helping to define the meaning of trauma, a compassionate look at it's impact and a way for everyone to make meaning from their experience and to begin the process of restoring balance.

Dear David

I got your books on the recommendation of Dr. Margaret Paul. I facilitate the Inner Bonding process ([...]) that she created and she recommended the exercises for someone with a severe trauma history whom I am helping. Since I am dealing with chronic pain and spasm associated with severe arthritis of the hips and spinal stenoisis, I was eager to try them myself. I have to say that I had experience with tremoring in bioenergetics and got very little out of that. I am LOVING the exercises though and cannot wait to find out what will happen next. ! I realized something last night though that I thought you might find entertaining which is why I wrote. I was flopping around on the floor and it reminded me of how it felt to have sex, bounced around so to speak. It has been over 3 years since my marriage ended so I have not done any of that. Anyway, I realized that sex does serve some of the same function, not just the orgasm, but the physical activity itself-tuning up the same sort of mechanism.

Also, my client is totally thrilled with the exercises. I do phone sessions with her, but she has a local therapist and she did her first trauma release session with her. Her therapist too is planning to use it with other clients.

Blessings to you. I am telling everyone about your work!

For myself and adopted child

Review Date: 2008-12-10
I am using these exercises to relieve my own stress and "soft trauma" of adopting a child from Russia. I also am adapting these exercises for my son who is 6 years old.

I have done the TREs about 10 times for myself now and wow, can't believe the relief I feel. It's like an after massage "glow" that last for a couple of days until I do the next exercise. This is helping me be a better person and calmer parent.

I believe that my son also carries within his body the trauma of his early beginnings of being separated from his birthmother and being in an orphanage for 6 months. I am adapting the exercises to keep my son's
attention. I am trying some creative ways to do this:
- naming the exercises "swaying tree", "flamingo" "waterfall"
- adding tempo by counting by the days of the week/months, singing twinkle,twinkle, little star, reciting a bible verse;
-using 6 beads and a bowl to count down the exercises.
-using a visual timer on the last two (longest) exercises so he knows how much longer the exercise will be.

The first time I did these with my son, it was a bit chaotic because he didn't know what to expect. The second time, he did start to tremor (we call it wiggling) a bit and said "wow, that feels really good."

It wasn't until the 3rd time that it all came together for him. His
tremors were very slight, but after about 10 minutes, he said "Mom, I
feel really tired." That night he fell asleep in 10 minutes---usually takes him 45 minutes because of overarousal, and he slept through the whole night! He told me in the morning that he had a really happy dream during the night.

The fourth time I did the exercises, at the very end when he put his feet forward to finish the tremors, he fell asleep for 5 minutes. He was totally relaxed. We have done many therapies, but I have never seen that kind of result.

For about 24-36 hours after the exercises I can tell that he is much calmer and not as anxious or angry. We are doing the exercises every other day and I am hopefull that they will systematically heal the past and the affects will be long lasting. I am sure it will take some time and we will be doing tune ups after the more intense beginning phase.

When you think about trauma, it comes in so many forms that I believe these exercises have great potential of being adapted for adoptive parents and children.

This book contains some good stories about OCD experiences. However, reading a book that a therapist who also happens to be a recovering sufferer wrote was much more comprehensive. Different types of symptoms are elaborated upon and more treatment and self-help techniques are discussed in The Boy Who Finally Stopped Washing. I really enjoyed this book; it was very humorous and informative.

Jeff Bell uses the metaphor of a tape player to describe his struggle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in his harrowing memoir, "Rewind, Replay, Repeat." Bell has been a successful radio personality for many years, which makes his willingness to come clean about his illness all the more remarkable. He is a doubter, who states, "I have all five of my senses, but tend not to trust any of them." Because he does not believe what he perceives, Bell mentally replays entire sequences of his life over and over again. He also revisits places to check that he has not harmed anyone or failed to do something essential. He calls his story "a tale of fear and torment and agony and shame."

After experiencing a few OCD symptoms as a child, Bell enjoys a normal adolescence, goes on to college, earns an MBA, marries his college sweetheart, and starts a career in commercial radio. He and his wife, Samantha, have a little girl, Nicole. Everything is going wonderfully. Unfortunately, the peace of mind that he enjoyed for so many years is shattered when his OCD returns with a vengeance. He begins to obsess about a near-collision that occurs while he is piloting his father's boat. He spends hours worrying about some minor damage that he may have inflicted on someone else's cabin cruiser. Not only does he think about this event constantly, but he also visits the marina over and over to look for physical clues. This fixation on an unimportant incident takes over his life to such an extent that it begins to affect his marriage and his ability to concentrate at work. He stays up all night worrying, and his sleeplessness makes him groggy during the day. Rather than owning up to his condition, Bell makes a valiant effort to hide the truth from his colleagues, friends, and loved ones. He is living a double life and it is destroying him emotionally.

Even after he reluctantly shares his secret with his family and agrees to seek help, the first therapist that Bell consults has no useful answers for him. Although his devoted wife is steadfast in her support of her beleaguered husband, she finds his behavior increasingly unsettling. After sixteen months of "pent-up rage," Bell curls up on the bathroom floor of his house and bawls like a baby. He is deteriorating and he has no idea what to do to make things better.

"Rewind, Replay, Repeat" illuminates the agonizing world of doubters and checkers--those unfortunate souls who cannot leave well enough alone. OCD sufferers include: the woman who must unlock her front door repeatedly to check the stove; the driver who feels compelled to circle the block to make sure that he didn't run over a pedestrian; the terrified child who keeps asking his mother the same question a thousand times and is never satisfied with the answer; the washers who scrub their hands dozens of times a day until their skin is raw and painful; and the savers who hoard objects of no value until their homes resemble garbage dumps. Medical science has yet to pinpoint exactly what causes the brains of OCD patients to misfire.

This is an intensely personal, painfully honest, and extremely detailed look at one man's journey into the abyss and back. After he learns that he has OCD, an incurable condition, Bell struggles for years to get his life under control with a combination of spiritual awakening, a support group, cognitive behavioral therapy, and drug treatment. "Rewind, Replay, Repeat" is an informative, touching, and vividly written first-person account that will give hope and comfort to OCD sufferers and their families. It is a welcome addition to other excellent non-fiction works on this subject that include the classic "The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing" by Judith Rappaport and "Brain Lock" by Jeffrey Schwartz.

I originally picked this gem up thinking it would be interesting to read from a psychological point of view. Once I started into it, though, I began to recognize certain elements of my own behavior. Though I would not say I am a full-blown OC, I do sometimes have obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors (probably as most people do at some time in their life). Just the title and him referring to the tapes that keep replaying in his brain was enough for me to squash my own destructive thoughts. Whenever I start wasting time on obsessive thoughts, I just think of his analogy of the tapes that keep playing, then rewinding and replaying. I then choose to shut the tape player off. Very freeing! A courageous and interesting story. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Bell.!

Can there be any truth to the concepts expressed in this book originaly published in the early 1900"s? I read it a while back and still find myself thinking about the alternative theories expressed in the book ... and recycled in a thousand and one personal motivation books since.

Don't be fooled, this book is difficult to read and comprehend. However, for those willing to tread the waters of early 1900s writing styles, the message in this book is wonderful and can potentially change your life.

If you are interested in the money aspect of the law of attraction, you may also want to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth" by Phillip Collinsworth.

Wattles' philosopy is New Thought, popular at the turn of the 19th century. It is really just wishful thinking or magical thinking. It doesn't work. Just because you think something doesn't make it come true, and you should be glad, because some people think very unpleasant things. You aren't Harry Potter, and magical thinking won't get you what you want in life. As for Monism or the theory that God is in everything, that would mean that God also exists in evil things, which would mean that God is not all good, so Monism cannot be true. This is just an early self-help book that seeks to empower people who feel powerless by telling them they can get anything they want if they just think about it hard enough and long enough. It's a waste of your time. Wattles wrote the same thing about health, and he died at about age 51. If he had lived to be 100 in good health and been a multimillionaire himself, he theories would be more credible. In fact, one of the people Wattles criticized as being "competitive", John D. Rockefeller, did live to be 98 and was a multmillionaire, so who are you going to believe?

The "Thinking Stuff" which Wallace Wattles declares, permeates the universe really caught my attention. The noted theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg refers to this "Thinking Stuff" as the Divine Wisdom in the book Divine Love and Wisdom, (published in Amsterdam in 1763).

I agree with the premise of Wattles book and as I reflect upon my life I can see where the Lord has indeed blessed me in ways I had desired.

It's ironic that a book entitled "Settle for Excellence (Stop Chasing Perfection)" is actually the closest self-development book to perfection I've ever read (and I've read nearly five hundred). It becomes clear very early on that this is a piece of work far beyond the level of excellent.

Topher's style is friendly and easy, and will be easily understood by all readers no matter what their level or previous exposure to self-development. There is no doubt that while reading this book you will be inspired to take positive action.

I would like to thank Topher for this great book and I highly recommend it to everyone who has an interest in being all that they can be.

This book is awesome. Read it.

After completing "Settle for Excellence" you will be inspired to "Seize the Day". I found it to be an excellent guide to self introspection. It will leave one feeling inspired and motivated to pursue overcoming the ever present barriers that seem to hold some of us back from obtaining various desired outcomes. This easy to read easy to follow book will help you understand certain behavior patterns, use tools you already have, and alter those behaviors allowing you to reach the goals you once thought unattainable. The best part about this process is things don't have to be perfect. A conclusion of stating this work is "Excellent" would be an understatement....It is "Perfect"!

Terrific book.

The true stories from the author's life are very powerful persuasive teaching stories which deeply affect you on a conscious and unconscious level. Originality and truth working together are often hard to find in self-help books. Highly recommended.
