I have to agree with the other 5 star writers. Pound for pound (makes a difference in your backpack) this book is hard to beat. I find it more complete than Secrets of Anesthesia, and more user friendly than Miller. If you want to learn 100 ways to not do something, and read conflicting studies then go for Miller, otherwise "M & M" is king. Besides, I challenge anyone to bring Barash or Miller into the OR with them for a quick reference...

Still a great resource

I just updated my older, well read copy recently. This is still my favorite anesthesia resource, the book I grab when I want to refresh my memory about this or that.
No, it's not as in depth as many, but it IS easy to read, and the major points are well covered.
Whether novice or experienced practitioner, this book has much to offer.

The best all-around book for residents and practitioners.

I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.

It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.

My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well.

This would be an optimal choice for most medical students with a special interest in anasthesia as well as for anaesthesia residents. It's extremely well-written, neither too detailed nor too simple. The authors write with authority, which is a good thing.

If I had to say something negative about this book, it would be the lack of colourful illustrations (this refers to edition elder to the 2005 edition). But then again, one knows what to expect when buying a Lange medical book. Still, this is a minor drawback, and means nothing in my eyes. I highly recommend this book!

If you are a medical student doing a derm rotation or plan on entering a primary care residency, this book is THE book to own. I wouldn't have minded having the online edition, but with not knowing when the new edition would come out (and subsequently when the online subscription would run out), it didn't seem to be worth the money.

I have owned or used the various editions of Habif's Clinical Dermatology for over ten years in our general internal medicine practice and return to it again and again. I have also used a variety of other Dermatology books brought in by staff - typically the $60 - $80 range books. They are typically o.k. but nothing stands up to Habif and I recommending spending the extra $ for it (in the $125 range). The pictures are big, clear and of typical presentations, the layout logical, the review of basics up front helpful and thoughtfully presented. You will find that this is the one you reach for when you need help.

Stillman Gone but the Diet Lives On

Folks, Dr. Stillman died of heart disease in the 1970s. He's been gone a while. However, this diet is still hands-down the best thing out there to drop the weight. I use Stillman intermittently with a carb-up carb-down approach to match my activity level, and I've been maintaining for 5 years. (In that time, I've run 9 marathons and done 5 triathlons.) My blood work is always excellent, and my doctor always says, "keep up the great work."

I'm currently training for a 50-mile race, so I'm carbier than usual these days, but I see runners all the time who have guts, paunches, and excess body fat. It's inevitable as you get older even if you exercise a lot. I credit the Stillman plan with keeping me lean all these years. I've got nice ab definition and great muscularity.

Couldn't have done it without Stillman as my baseline plan.

This is the most motivating and postive experance I've ever had with a diet. Lost 30 lbs in 8 weeks. In fact evertime you go to a scale, you find you have lost another one or two pounds! I love turkey breast, and cottage cheese, and I could drown in it, and still lose! The water is not so hard to drink. you just keep a water bottle with you, and take sips throughout the day. The only negative I had was my clothes started smothering me, and I had to buy new ones! This is the easiest diet, if you have alot of weight to get off. Anyone can do it!

Fast results, hunger free, basic foods, little prep=best diet ever.

Please reprint this wonderful book so that everyone can get a copy. I know that low carbing is "out" these days, but only a month on this program will show such great results in your body and energy level. It's basically a pure protien diet, with little to no fat or carbs, so you can imagine how blah the food choices are (eggs and lean meats). Also, I do think that this should be a short term program, followed no more than one month (all that protien is hard on the kidneys!). I had about 40 pounds to lose and lost 28 in one month. During that month I researched what healthy eating entails so that I could keep losing and not gain anything back. That worked fine for me. Will power is needed, the food choices are silm ang get old quick, but the fast track to health with ease makes it worth it. Please reprint this book so that every dieter can enjoy it!!

If you are TRUELY motivated and serious about losing weight,(and quickly to boot!),then this is the diet to do!I lost almost 30 lbs in a month..that's just insane!

The Stillman's diet is very easy to follow...low carbs, low fats like eggs, tuna, chicken, fish, spices, and tons of water!YES,the diet is severe and at first hard to follow..but after a few days, your hunger is gone COMPLETELY and you have to FORCE yourself to eat!

I agree with the other reviewers that there's a reason why people are still doing this diet after all these years...because it's the best and it works!

Not only does this diet help you to loose weight, it literally melts the fat off your body! it's amazing! I actually got the book at my local library so check your local library to see if they might carry it.

As author of Eldercare for Dummies, I would like to point you to a new film "The Savages" released in December 2007 staring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney. "Eldercare for Dummies" is actually reviewed in a scene in which a support group leader talks to her group members about the book endorsing it as "terrific." Great to see my book on the big screen, but more important, this is a film everyone needs to see -- especially children with elderly parents.

A Practical Guide for Families Searching for Eldercare

From the first page to the last, this guide offers practical, hands-on tips for navigating the maze of eldercare. As our population ages, more and more people find themselves thrust into the role of caregiver for aging relatives--often parents---usually with little or no background to prepare them for this role.

Eldercare for Dummies is easy-to-understand, engaging and witty, not overly technical or bogged down with research. Targeted directly to readers who face caring for an aging loved one, it guides them through assessing the current needs of the senior, choosing and arranging for appropriate care, ensuring safety, and helping to maintain happiness and quality of life.

I recently met Rachelle at a healthcare meeting and was fasinated after hearing she had written her book. As an owner of a "free" senior placement service, I was anxious to read it and see how else I could advise my clients on such tough matters as eldercare. The book is with me wherever I go. Over the holidays I found myself counseling my own family members on how to talk to their in-laws when they begin to notice the ever changing physical events in their lives. I've only started, so there is so much more to learn. In the meantime, I never open the book without a highlighter in hand. Many thanks Rachelle!

After reading this book, I can say without a doubt, that it is one of finest disaster works I have ever been exposed. It has taken complex issues and presented them in a real world method that makes comprehension and application quite easy. Frankly this is a must have reference for emergency service and management personnel in public and private sectors. Outstanding work!

The information in this book should be more available to everyone!!! Doctors should be telling people some of the information in this book during their visits. The nutrition section was extremely important to me.

I have a completely new life now after reading this book and Treating Epilepsy Naturally by Patricia A. Murphy. These two books have so changed my life that I can hardly believe it. I wish I would have had these books over 20 years ago. But now, I have them and am so grateful. After having a seizure every week I am almost beside myself now that it has been over 6 weeks. And I haven't even tried everything in these books. Just a few. I wish I could give a medal to the authors. I wish I could express my thanks properly. If you have epilepsy or know someone who does, you won't regret reading these books and applying their advice. They are an answered prayer.

A Classic "Must Read" for epilepsy patients, their families and friends and health care providers
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-26
In spite of no new edition for ten years, this book is still highly relevent. The information on medication is a bit dated but everything else seems to be timeless.

In a world full of medical miracles people often expect a simple solution to their medical problems; i.e., "take a pill and everything will be alright." With epilepsy that is often not the case. There is so much more to the condition than just seizures. There is so much more to treating the disease than just taking pills. Most physicians are so pressed for time because of managed care and too few specialty providers that they rarely have time during an appointment to discuss the many aspects of epilepsy let alone the finer points of treating it.

This book addresses the many facets of epilepsy and suggests ways that individuals can take control of their disease. Most of the ideas are backed up with anecdotal evidence, but the concepts are extremely cogent and intellectually appealing.

Rather than listing the contents of the book I think it is sufficient to say that the book advocates a holistic approach to the person with epilepsy. I heartily endorse that idea. It will be up to the individual and their family to make that happen. Physicians can help by directing people to resources outside of the traditional "just take your meds" approach. It is good to have a balanced approach to this condition.

I highly recommend this book. It is extremely well written and is a joy to read. Of all of the books I have read on epilepsy (so far), it more than any other paints a broad picture of the disease and advocates a balanced approach (between traditional medicine and alternative methods) to helping the person take control of their disease process.

As a mother of two very young children, this book was recommended to me as I began my research on grace based discipline. I was excited to find it addresses not only the parent-child relationship but the husband-wife relationship as well. I learned so much from this book. I couldn't put it down. I definitely think that it should be read more than once, as it has some heavier parts and it can't all be truly digested in one read. Highly recommended!

I liked the insight this book shared, but left wondering what I was supp

Like the approach but it ought to be fleshed out more with some less personal scenarios. Parenting is truly so personal.

I recommend this book to everyone. I wish I had read this book while I was single and before I had children. It would have saved me years of trial and error. The author gives a fresh perspective on what God intended for families. This book just made so much sense to me. I had been feeling like quite a failure as a parent. Oh sure, I'd been enforcing all of the "Christian" child-rearing standards, but somehow there was a lack of closeness with my strong willed 11 year old daughter. In public she was the picture of a well behaved, well mannered child. At home there was a constant friction and power struggle with her. I knew what we were doing wasn't working but just didn't know what else to do. While reading Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse, The, repack: Recognizing and Escaping Spiritual Manipulation and False Spiritual Authority Within the Church I began to see that some of the legalistic standards imposed on me were in turn being imposed on her. I decided to purchase this book by Jeff VanVonderen to get more answers. That's exactly what I got! Our relationship is 100% improved. The burdens are being lifted. This book is also very helpful in the marriage category. It helped me to see some things and improve on that as well. If you want a whole new perspective on family I highly recommend this book.

*****
This book is incredibly helpful because it helps you to learn practical methods for coping with depression. The subtitle is "50 Strategies for Keeping Your Life on Track", and each strategy is thoroughly explored. First it is explained, then there is a short exercise you can do to apply the strategy to your life. Next the strategy is illustrated in a story from someone's personal life. Lastly, the author shares a story about applying that strategy in her own life.

For example, one strategy I found very helpful is "Accept the Limitations Caused By Depression". I expect way, way too much of myself every day and then feel bad when I can't accomplish what I want to. This strategy (and the book in general) helped me to see that I will feel better and get more done in the long run if I don't beat myself up about what I can't do, and if I work the other strategies diligently to do what I can.

It really helped that the author is successful and accomplished despite her depression, and the stories show how many, many people work with their illness to make valuable contributions with their lives instead of just giving in to depression and using it as an excuse for failure. It truly made me feel like I wasn't alone---that many others feel this way, and that they organize their lives so that they can still succeed.

I have to say that it's the most practical book I've ever read for actually coping with depression.

Highly recommended.

Hope's Edge is a Must Read for Everyone! The book puts it all together in an easy-to-understand, personal and honest fashion: the connection between consumerism, 'brainwashing', oppression, global economy, poverty, exploitation etc. etc. The concepts presented in this book are sophisticated and have depth. I liked the personal tone of the book, the story telling. The book is very honest, the stories told utterly inspiring. Frances and Anna never 'whitewash' the porlbmes the projects they are describing are facing. This truth-telling makes the stories even more impressive, more credible. The very existence of these projects defy the global systems as we know them. The way they do 'business' defies the global system of exploitation and competition. This book makes us take an honest look at ourselves, our values, the daily choices we make, what we consume, how we live. This is not just 'about food' or poverty or world hunger, this is truly food for thought and inspiration of how to create a better world."

Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.

This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.

Good copy. Excellent vegetarian recipes. Explains why we need to eat lower on the food chain. If we do, we can feed the world's hungry people.

Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.

The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.

The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".

The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.

Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.

I've been part of Michelle's BUFFMOTHER Rally Room for over two years now. It's a place with an amazing positive force. I have applied much of what Michelle teaches into my workouts over the years and have seen some Great Results and I'm currently training with her personally and can't wait to see how I can change even more!! I knew she was writing her book over the years and couldn't wait for it to come out.
When it did, I was so impressed by the book that I bought 5 more as gifts for my daughters and girlfriends. To be able to understand and work with your hormones is SO valuable!! She has a way of writing that really helps you to understand the cycle and the reasons we feel the way we do at certain times of the month and then how to work with those times in our eating and workouts. Why not work WITH your Hormomes instead of Against them!! Also in the book she shares information to her Rallyroom, her supplements and how you can Build a Better Legacy for yourelf.

I have had the opportunity of training with Michelle in the past, and was amazed at my results!! This book is invaluable to women everywhere, as it contains ALL of the information she gives to her personal training clients (for $1200), yet it's in the palm of your hand.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone out there who is ready and willing to challenge themselves in order to see the person inside of them they've always known was there, yet haven't seen in a while or never had the opportunity to let shine through. Her results speak for themselves!!! 13 months after giving birth to her 3rd and 4th child (twins by c-section) she was in incredible shape. This book is a MUST READ!!!
