Women Need To Read This BookReview Date: 2008-04-27
I loved this book!Review Date: 2008-04-14
Many thanks to Susan Wicklund for telling the world how her life was effected by her work.
A couageous womanReview Date: 2008-03-29
Well-written, poignant memoirReview Date: 2008-04-18
Dr. Wicklund focuses her memoir on herself, but also on her patients. The many, many women that she has served over the years play a huge role in this book. However, what was most interesting and eye-opening to me was her recounting of various tactics used by anti-choice protesters, and what she had to do to keep herself safe and to keep working. I had heard of doctors being killed, but I truly had no clue about the everyday lengths to which the "antis" would go in their self-righteousness.
Dr. Wicklund, I don't know if you read your book reviews on Amazon.com, but thank you. Thank you for writing this book, and for doing what you have done and what you do. Thank you for never giving up. You are an inspiration, as is your daughter, and everyone who supported you.
Why? For Whom?Review Date: 2008-03-19
Dr. Wicklund has a right to produce a book, especially after decades of work in the area. However, the book is poorly planned. It is a sequence of personal recollections, a number of anecdotes put together, end to end. If the anecdotes were connected better by a common theme, it could be more revealing. As it is, it recounts the personal emotional excursions of a number of different people. There is no doubt that the emotions are real. They are relevant to an extent, but they aren't some sort of telling argument. Neither side of this particular debate has ever been plagued or inconvenienced by any excessive exercise of sanity.
I have tried over many years to understand the views of the opposition, those who are pro-abortion and prefer to spin it as "pro-choice." To me, it has always seemed that the core argument of their position is convenience. It is convenient to be very sexually active and even to be sexually promiscuous, and abortion is a somewhat unpleasant but very practical version of birth control. So, it has seemed to me---perhaps incorrectly---that abortion is needed mainly as a practical convenience. Even Dr. Wicklund's own original experience was caused basically because she found it convenient or useful to live together with a man who was not her husband at a time of their lives when they had not established a reasonable economic basis. Was it necessary? They thought so. Maybe it was...maybe not.
Is my view wrong? Undoubtedly it is simplistic. Undoubtedly the world itself has shades of gray that I am overlooking or too blind to see. The fact is that this book is written sufficiently badly that it gives me no more clue of the opposite view than I had before. I read the book because I was clueless, and I remain clueless afterward.
People do have a choice, and it is often good to exercise the choice by using a zipper.

This book is about this girl named Hannah that gets separated from her parents and has to move to her Aunts house in West Boston. After she got there she started working in a store to help her Aunt with food & clothes.
Weeks later she got the flu and got real sick. The flu had killed ten thousand people so far. After she gets her energy back. Tanta Rose and her went to try to get her family together. After month of hard work she got her family together.
I didn't like this book because it was boring. It barley had any action. If you are boring and like boring things you should you should read this book.

Amazing, engaging, imaginative ... must read!Review Date: 2003-11-12
The story line, taking place during the influenza pandemic of 1917-18, is grippingly realistic -- entire neighborhoods are nearly wiped out by the dreaded disease, and panic-stricken residents don't really know how to deal with the enormous problem. Meanwhile, Hannah and her two younger sisters are left in Boston with an aunt, since her mother is trapped in WWI Russia caring for relatives and her father is off fighting in the war -- and neither have been heard from.
When influenza tears Hannah's family apart, circumstances take her far away where she ends up in the care of a gruff old farmer who has been isolated from other townsfolk because of his German heritage. The relationship that forms between the two of them is sweet and tender, and Hesse crafts it beautifully.
Truly, Hesse's characterizations and descriptions make this book nearly magical to read. She weaves in bits and pieces of Jewish culture, American history, and wonderful mystical interludes with an angel who saves Hannah's life more than once.
Boring? Don't believe it. This is a book you shouldn't miss!

From another cat lover - leeomahoneyReview Date: 2008-03-16
My three cats are benefiting greatly from the info on nutrition and gentle holistic means for treating illness and disease. I'm also benefiting by saving a fortune on vet visits and expensive drugs that often just treat the symptom, not the cause. I feel so much more empowered knowing that I can treat common ailments myself, using items readily available from most health food stores. The book also explains when I should go to the vet without delay. The book is thoroughly researched using the latest information available. For this reason, it's far more useful than older books on the subject.
Without this book, I wouldn't have the confidence to make my animals' food myself. This book has all the information I need to know that the food I'm giving them is not only enjoyable for them to eat, but is nutritionally balanced, based on the latest research in cat nutrition. Given the tragic pet food contamination that killed thousands of cats and dogs, I can sleep at night knowing that my guys won't be the victims of less-than-optimum quality control and cat-inappropriate `filler' ingredients that are in so many commercial pet foods.
I particularly love the `mix and match' table which shows you how to nutritionally balance various types of meat with the other things cats' need.
For those who don't want to make their cats' meals, the book includes details on what to look for in commercial cat food, and what to avoid.
The book covers a whole raft of issues including diet, first aid, treating minor ailments, behavioural issues, reducing stress during vet visits, cat-toxic plants, how to introduce cats to each other to minimise hissing, spitting and flying fur, solving toilet troubles and how to resolve conflict in multi-cat households. There's even a recipe for safe, cat-appropriate tooth paste to maintain good teeth and gum health (I'm psyching myself up to try that out) and a gentle tummy soother.
The book is very easy to read, with lots of gorgeous photos, side bars, graphs and tables and interesting facts and figures. An absolute winner. I've given copies of this book to others and it's also in my public library.
My cats are healthy, lean, purring machines and they have this book and the author's extensive knowledge to thank for that. Every purrson should have a copy.

This is a great bookReview Date: 2006-06-19
Not only does Dr. Berkson come across as a very competent and compassionate physician, especially in regards to lipoic acid, on which he is America's leading expert, he is also an outspoken critic of what he correctly sees as problems in modern American medicine. In the first chapter, he describes how he almost ended his career when he saved the life of a dying patient against the wishes of his boss, and how he would do it again. No insurance policy and few doctor's visits can provide the benefits of his invaluable candor, which serves to immunize his readers with a large and healthy level of cynicism about medicine as it is practiced in the United States today.
One thing that this book does not contain is advice on what dosage of lipoic acid to ingest. This may be a sign of great wisdom; in Germany, where Dr. Berkson worked at the Max Planck Institute, and where lipoic acid has been on the market for decades, neurologists who exclude a potential heavy metal poisoning in their patients are not regarded with the sort of wonderment that mermaids and unicorns otherwise garner. Those with a heavy metal problem can suffer some extremely unwelcome and perhaps permanent side-effects if they take the sort of dosages that others easily tolerate. By not giving any advice on this subject, Dr. Berkson certainly isn't giving any bad advice on this subject.
I heartily recommend this book.

A Must Read! Life-ChangingReview Date: 2007-11-26
My personal view is that all too often - Christians grow up with little understanding of their sexuality and in almost total denial of how God made them! This denial comes at a high cost - both in divorce rates - and - leading dull lethargic lives (as compared with accepting how God lovingly and with purpose and intention - designed us). I firmly believe our God was far more careful and with intent and purpose - as He lovingly crafted our emotional and sexual makeup - and in balance and understanding - this is a source of great strength, drive and power not to mention strength and intimacy for a committed couple. Yet so many seem wired to live steeped in denial as if it was Godly and our expected sacrifice - when in fact - we are denying the wonderment and power of how he not only made us - but intentionally equipped us! Yes - intentionally equipped us!
For me, this denial is tantamount rejecting His finest and most careful creation - that was fashioned in His image! On the other hand - to break down the icy walls of this denial - and candidly acknowledge Him in all your ways (your sexuality included) and give Him the credit and glory begins an amazing journey that is forever life-changing and family-strengthening.
Simply put - unbridled - run-away sexuality leads to destruction of personal lives - and - families. So does denial.
Without a doubt - The sexual and intimacy aspects - are extremely wonderful, tender and alone are well worth the effort. Absolutely! But this book does much more than that.

After talking with him, he gave me a plan and his book. I began reading his book and I couldn't stop until I was finished. (It was just that interesting) As I read and followed his plan, I learned so much from a physical, mental, and spitritual point of view. As time went on, I ate as he told me, took testosterone, growth hormone and armour thyroid (as I was low in all of these) and began to walk three miles a day.
I had never been consistent with exercise until I heard Dr Runels explain it the way he did. It turned a light on for me and I have been consistent ever since.
Now, with a weight loss of over 90 pounds and walking 3 miles a day, I have never felt better in my life. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Runels for changing my life and I thank God for him and the knowlege he shares in his book.
Dr. Runels has changed many lives which I have had the privilege to witness first hand. I now work with him and am blessed to see many people come from a place of pain and hopelessness, to a place in their lives where they are vibrant and alive again. It is so refreshing to see a physician with such passion and compassion use his knoweldge outside the box to change many lives.
