Amazing book! I could not put it down and loved the honesty that these two women demonstrated!

This book brings forth the powerful message of denial...all family member who live in a fantasy world denying the inner voice that speaks of the sadness, anger, disconnect that we ignore because we are wanting life to be perfect. We need to get to hear more stories of the pain and agony the life of the addict and their family so we can stop the denial and begin the healing. This was a very hard book to read, and so worth every challenging moment.

I just finished this book and think that every teenage girl and woman should read this. Kristina and Constance's candor and self revealing story is unbelievably inspirational. Every family dealing with addiction should read this, but I think it is an important read for any home with a teenage home (siblings, parents, etc). This is a moving, at times, heart-breaking story. You will laugh, cry and hurt with both Constance and Kristina. I am so moved by this story! A MUST READ!

Thank God for this book. If you are a mother struggling with a teen-age daughter's addictions, this is the book for you. The book was written from the heart by a brillant young woman who pulled herself out of the "living hell" of drug and alcohol addiction and a brave mother who realized that the only way her child would recover was if she allowed her to do it on her own. It is a blessing and a miracle they both survived the ordeal to write the book. I am sure you will be inspired by Kristina's and Constance's compelling story. It offers great insight and hope for all of us.

This is a great book. It reads more like a story, but has a lot of good information in it. The daughter especially writes well. Her ability to describe her experiences is extremely well done. You feel her. The mom also is a good writer. The only thing I think she could have done better is explain how she went from one extreme to the other with her daughter. I think for the average mother out there they might find her approach rather harsh. I agree with her approach, but think maybe a little more details as to how she became so firm would be helpful for some mothers. But, overall I really liked this book and would highly recommend it. I think it is a very hopeful book, but not for a weak stomach because it is very graphic as to what a drug addict on the streets can and does go through. It is heart wrenching, but very real. Great job to both authors.

If you like romance novels then you'll love this on. It tells the story of April who is diagnoised with cancer, she falls in love with a young man named Mark.I won't give away the ending but it's a real tearjerker.

I picked up this book at my local bookstore because i absolutely adore Lurlene McDaniel's books. They are so heartwrenching and tug at your heart strings. This book was especially great. I read it in two days and could not put it down. i recently bought her 2nd part to the novel. This book is absolutely incredible and if youre into those heart-breaking-loving-romantic stories this is the book for you. Anyone can relate to this story no matter what. Not only is this a great read but its educational.i learned a lot about CF and how it effects people. PICK THIS BOOK UP TODAY!

I loved this book! I still do love this book! I am so happy that I chose this book randomly off the bookshelf at the book store, because if I hadn't then I wouldn't have gotten to read "Till Death Do Us Part".

April's trying not think of why she might really be in the hospital agian. She's 17, and hasn't been in the hospital since she was 5, and had a brain tumor. She's been having terrible headaches lately though, and she fainted in class. April is desperatly hoping that the headaches arne't related to the brian tumor she had 12 years ago. Her worst nightmare comes true though. The tumor's back. Only this time, they can't just surjically remove it. It's too close to her brain. Radiations her only hope.

April can't believe it. When she tell her popular soccer playing boyfriend, Chriss, he doesn't know how to handle it. Her best friend, Katie, is trying, but it's hard to know how to act.

The only good part abaout being in the hospital is Mark. Mark has CF, and has problems breathing. His illnes is terminal, and he will die. He falls in love with April though. At first April's afraid to date him, because he's sick, but her makes her feel more special than anyone in the world.

April begins to fall in love with Mark. He always knows how to cheer her up, and truly wants to be with her. She loves going to the track to watch him race cars, his hobby. It's bad for his CF, but April knows that it's one of the few ways he can control his life. She also loves going to their favorite Italian restaurant, and just being with him.

When Mark asks April to marry him, she says yes. She never dreamed that the wedding would never happen. How could she have known that there would be a racing car accident? Thar Mark would wind up in the hospital.

This book was so sad, and I just wanted to bawl my eyes out. I can only say one thing. DON'T READ THE SEQUEL. In my opinion, it absolutely ruins the wanderful story that Lurlene McDaniel has writen.

It was so sad that in the end i cried. I know what its like to loose someone close to my heart and it made i easier to relate to this book. The book kept me wanting to know what would happen to April and Mark. It showed me that it's just as hard fo other people to go through hard times.

As the widow of a man with cystic fibrosis I can relate to this book as if it was my own. I was amazed at the reality used in this book and how true it can be to the actual feelings that a person feels in this situation. When my husband asked me to marry him at age 23 (me being 19) I agreed thinking that we would have many happy years together. However after being married exactly one year to the date his CF worsened and he passed away after 1 year, 6 months of marriage. He left behind a wife and a beautiful son that he was never able to meet.

Beth's parents go to a picnic for her dad's work and they wanted to bring Beth, but she had the flu. Alison and Doug went though. On their way to the picnic they got in a car accident. The police came right to Beth's house to see if Beth was there. Beth heard a ring on te doorbell and saw the police there. Beth got the news from the police that her parents and her brother and sister were hurt real bad. Then Beth went to the hospital and nobody would tell her what had happened. Beth had to call her aunt who lived in Tampa to come up and see her and comfort her. After Beth's aunt came, the doctor told Beth and her aunt that Beth's family was D.O.A. dead on arrival. Beth went to her aunt's house to live. Terri her cousin didn't really like her though. Terri asked her to go to a party with her because she pretty much had to. They went to the party and Beth wanted to leave halfway through. Beth starts to go to school in Westwood and she gets a friend, Jared. This boy was the nicest boy in the school. He liked everyone. Beth also helps out this other girl who has a bad home life. Then she brings Sloane the girl with the bad home life to her house and she stays there for the weekend. Beth starts to be the popular one in the school. Terri and Beth start to be friends and they start to hang out together. At the end Terri and her mom bring Beth to her old house and she goes to the cementry to see her sister, her brother, her dad, and her mom's grave and they live happily ever after.

This book is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Beth. Beth was sick one day in the summer, her family was invited to cookout and she didn't go because she was sick. When her family was on their way to the cookout they got in a car accident, and the whole family was injured. The family was sent to the hospital. Beth was at her house when this accrued. The cops came to her house and brought her to the hospital. They called Beth's Aunt Camille and she got a fight to the hospital. She was Beth's only relative. Beth's parents, brother, and sister ended up passing away and Beth had to go live with her aunt and her family. Aunt Camille had a daughter Beth age and her name was Terri. You will have to read this book to find out if Beth likes her new school, makes new friends, or if her and Terri get along.

The things that I liked in this book were that Beth got along great with her family, she had best friends named Teddy and Marcie, and that her aunt and uncle treated Beth with respect and gave her a lot of support. My dislikes to this book were that Terri didn't get along with her parents or anyone, Beth didn't get to see or speak to Marcie before she left, and that people bought Beth's house and they didn't tell her who it was.

Over all I really liked this book. I could never put this book down. I would recommend The Girls Death Left Behind to a girl because it has a lot of sad and emotional parts in it. I also recommend this book to a girl because the main character is a girl. The events have great details, and I hope that those of you who haven't read this book to read it.

I am expecting my first baby in July and purchased this book because I plan to breast feed & am doing as much research as possible on everything long before baby comes home. So far, I have only read the introduction & first chapter, which is applicable to someone months away from giving birth.
I agree with other reviewers that the author is definitely biased towards breast-feeding, but, duh! Why would the "Nursing Mother's Companion" encourage bottle feeding formula, especially when it has been proven time & time again that nursing is best for baby AND mother?
I would recommend this book to any of my friends considering nursing.

Of all the nursing books out there, I am so glad that I picked (and I bought it because of the reviews!) this one. There is some really good advice for first time mothers and it was easy to read. I could read it quickly when I needed late night or early morning help. I am now going to buy this book for every baby shower that I go to!!

I purchased this book, because I heard that about 80% of women actually struggle at least a bit with breastfeeding. I wanted to make sure that I was ready for any complications and issues that might arise and was informed as to how to correct them ahead of time. There is a lot of fantastic information in this book. I would definitely recommend reading the book BEFORE you have the baby and have to suddenly breastfeed within an hour or so--especially if there are any issues. That way you'll be more prepared as to various things to try to solve any problems rather than becoming overly stressed and giving up too soon.

While this book provides useful tips and encouragements for nursing moms, I found the author quite single minded on what is the right way to feed the baby and not always clear on what's her personal opinion vs. what's well adopted or proven. My advice is that this is a book worth reading, but don't use it as the only guidance for feeding your child.

If you don't want a child who stays in your bed for a long long time or who grows up to believe crying is the way to get attention and whatever she wants whenever she wants it, and if you'd like to bring a happy kid into your life rather than turning yours upside down, go read other books and get second opinions elsewhere.

Small steps was an enjoyable book and i would definatley recommend it to all of my friends. During this story, a polio patient named Peg, changes, not facial or look wise but mentally. At first she would worry about winning first in something however when she gets diagnosed with polio those worries change. Now she worries about whether she'll make it or not, and she realizes how lucky she really was without the polio. One of my favorite things abobut peg is that she can always take a sad thing and make it better, such as whenshe needs a wheelchair, instead of outing she learns how to wheelie on it! there is one thing i would warn you about; there isnt a lto of dialoge. If you love dialoge and cant get enough of it, then you are just like me! I dont really like books without dialoge. however, when i read this book I realized it has enough dialoge to keep me coming back for more. Although i really like the way it was written too. When in saw that this was a biography, i hesitated to pick it up. But when i started to read, i realized that this wasnt one of the ordinary boring biographies, but a biography written in fictioin form! Also, if your looking for a book written by the author then that is anothter reasen for you to, go out and get this book. Small steps is written in frist person. The plpot of this book is very easy to follow now read carefully; a 12 year old girl named peg is diagnosed with polio, and is taken to many different hospitals. While she is being transfered, she is fighting with all of her gut to kick this polio out of her system. That is as far as i am going with that.
Wait there is more, if you are also not a fan of long expositions; this book is probably the best one or you. Tyeh exposition is npt long at all. It simply describes where Peg lives how old she is and what she like sto do, and then the action starts.

My daughter, age 9, was assigned to read this book as part of a Reading Olympics program in her school. I found it at the library and read the first chapter to her while we were still in the library. She did not want me to stop reading. We read it together every night after she had finished her homework. She was so fascinated with Peg Kehret's story that she would work hard to finish her homework in order to leave time for reading before bed. I highly recommend this book for older elementary and middle school age children. The author offers a very engaging glimpse of her experience as a child their age going through an enormously difficult and challenging ordeal. Her courage and humor in the face of her disease will give children insight into coping skills they can use someday.

This book is a must if you are looking for a book for your Mother/Daugther book club. We read it when our daughters were 10 yrs. old, but you could certainly be older. All the moms loved it.

I loved this book! It is about a girl named Peg who is stricken with Polio. My fav. part was when her temperature dropped by drinking the chocolate milkshake. I would recommend this book for anyone!

This book was certainly good but it sounded as if a child was telling. It really didn't describe things very well and it jumped to fast. It was a good story but it wasn't set up totally right. I liked it though and I think you will too. I was required to read this in 6th grade and I read it ahead of the class because I couldn't put the book down because the story was interesting and...touching. I wish it would have explained what she did when she went to school and what her friend's reaction were. I usually don't read books like this and actually like it though.

This is the most informative book I have found on this subject.
I was able to get specific,understandable details from what testing accomplishes to symtoms, all the way to how to live with thyroid disease.

I have hypothyroid and have found this book to be a helpful resource to which I refer frequently.

This is the most comprehensive book about thyroid diseases on the market. Hypo and hyperthyroidism and their treatments are covered in great details. The author pays particular attention to the mental aspects of these illnesses.

Arem Ridha is way ahead of his colleagues in his recognition of T3 as a crucial ingredient in hormone replacement. 20% of the thyroid made by a healthy thyroid gland is T3. Yet when it comes to thyroid hormone replacement T3 is not prescribed by most doctors. If you've been on Synthroid and not feeling well, talk to your doctor about either adding the missing T3 or using the natural thyroid that contains T3 and T4 in one pill. There's a reason why the T3 containing preparations work better. I admire the authors admittance of not being able to treat patients despite the normal blood tests and his willingness to search for the solution for his patients. T3 is the secret ingredient of the "Thyroid Solution" described in this book.

The only shortcomings are limited coverage of Hashimoto and adrenal insufficiency (which often goes hand in hand with the thyroid disease). The thyroid resistance (Hypothyroidism Type II) isn't covered either. The author seems to be on the fence with the TSH. Some parts of the book question whether TSH is the golden standard and whether its wide 'normal' range can be trusted; other parts of the book advise to go by TSH. Will see where the author stands with his next edition.

All in all, this is a wonderful and much needed book!

This book is really a great source of introductory information on Thyroid function, disorders, treatments, and risks and failures of some treatments. I would also recommend Elaine Moore's books on this subject, but this would be a good first read. It will prepare you for her more advanced introduction of information. One of the highlights of this book was the constant sharing of personal experience stories that you will definitely find useful. The frustration of not being diagnosed until the symptoms kick your physician in the knee is lessened somewhat when you read of all the other people who've had similar frustrating experiences. This book will also arm you with an understanding that will help you spot disorders in your friends and family, quite possibly sparing them the long term of frustation and confusion.

I would be the first to suggest that endocrinologists and doctors in general will not spend the time to help you find out the cause of your thyroid disorder. For instance, is it bad or is it under an autoimmune attack? If the latter is the case, killing the thyroid alone will not address the autoimmune attack on other organs in your body. You really want to know how to intelligently ask your doctor questions like, "What happens to the parathyroids when you irradiate my thyroid?" "Can you guarantee I will not know the difference between what my thyroid used to produce and what some synthetic drug will do on my mind and body?" etc.

I'm not saying that Radioactive Iodine is terrible or in some situations, it may even be the best solution-- it is just not the only solution to these illnesses and for some reason, in the USA, RAI is the first option they always discuss using. Once Radiated, your thyroid is gone forever.

If you want to understand your illness so you can be your own advocate, this book is a great fist step. It is also quite inexpensive, compared to most special interest books on this topic. Scotty/Sioux City

Do you like stories with friends that stick together forever? If you do you might like this book by Lurlene McDaniel. The story is about Ethan and Leah, are teenagers who are best friends. The story is about Ethan who is Amish goes and visits Leah who I an the hospital for nine days, diagnosed with bone cancer is the worst one week and two days for her especially for her because her mom an her husband are on a cruise out so she's all alone luckily she gets out the hospital Ethan's by her side. They have a strong love for each other is a very inspirational story about Leah and Ethan You will love this book I enjoyed it very much.

Lifted up by angels is a lovely book that explains life betweem Leah and the amish. It is and experiencing book for people to explore.

this book is a great book to read and it helps you to understand the hardships that some families have in their everyday life. i think it is really inspiriational and it can teach you things you may not have known.

As you can gather from the name, in my oppinion the second book was much better than the first book. In this novel, Leah goes to work during the summer near the Amish community. She meets up with Ethan and Charity, and though things seem to be going good at first, many conflicts spring up during her stay. The more she falls for Ethan, the more problems seem to occur. You should deffinately read this book.

This was a birthday gift for my son who is the T.B. epidemiologist at the Michigan State Health Department. He loved the gift and I loved the price!

First, buy copy of Harrison's and position on desk so that other physicians can see you are a Serious Doctor. Hope they don't notice the layer of dust it accumulates.

Second, buy this book. Hide it under papers at the other end of your desk. You will use it every day if you know what is good for your patients. It's cheap, buy a second copy and keep it on your bed stand and read it cover to cover.

With this edition, the Merck Manual returns to a more professionally oriented content from the disastrous previous edition. Don't let the reviews here that this is a good text for "lay people" put you off. It is not and only those people who think they can cram 12 years of medical education (not counting experience afterwards) into 30 minutes of on-line Googling will think so.

I am familiar with this book since 1981 and every ten years I buy the most recent edition ,by this I can keep myself updated in various aspects of medicne specaily those outside the scope of specialty.
I think that the Merck Manual is one of the most usefull medical books , for its comprehensive clinical knowledge, excellent and informative tables and diagrams.
I encourage all the doctors to have a copy of the Merck manual , knowing that this book is not a specialty limited text book .

This is a vast medical reference book, written in technical language for practicing clinicians. That, of course, does not mean that it can't be endlessly fascinating and useful for so-called "laypeople" as well.

Always wanted to be a doctor? Grades were never good enough? Couldn't afford it? Not to worry. This book is the wannabe physician's dream, and the hypochondriac's worst nightmare. It covers the entire range of human illness and injury, including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. No other medical reference book comes close to its exhaustive coverage and scientific excellence. Potential readers should keep in mind that this book is NOT a drug reference, but a manual for general clinical practice. If you want to know the infinite details about your favorite pills, you'll need the Physician's Desk Reference as well.

The book has thousands of tissue-paper thin pages, all filled with text. There are no photographs, few graphics of any kind, and only a few tables. It's a massive encyclopedia. For the curious and well-informed layperson, I recommend this book over the watered-down home version. It's not that the home version is "dumbed down." It isn't, but the real thing is far more scientifically penetrating in analysis, cause and treatment options. The technical language can be a bit daunting without a good medical dictionary (or an M.D. or D.O. degree), but once you learn a few recurring terms you'll find this book to be the best self-doctoring tool you've ever put your hands on. The only thing you won't be able to do is write your own prescriptions! Your doctor will just HATE you for it.

New editions of the Merck Manual come around every six years or so, and sometimes it takes as long as ten, so this edition will be current for at least another five years. I know it sounds perverted, but I bought this book because I enjoy the science behind it. I read it just to learn new fascinating things about the wonderful field of medicine, and you can too! If anything, you'll appreciate how brilliant your medical professionals are.

The Merck Manual has always been a medical gem. The information is timely, authoritative, and beautifully written and edited. It informs but does not overwhelm with esoteric medical-speak. I have been a physician (M.D.)for 47 years and have found The Manual a valuable companion on countless occasions. The section on personality disorders, for example, provides one of the finest explanations of the diagnosis and treatment of these complicated mental conditions I have ever read. The Merck Manual sets a very high standard for medical texts.

Louisa County High School recommends that you read Baby Alicia Is Dying. We all agree that if you read the book then you would think before you made a bad action like Alicia's mother did. Many of us cried in the end.

Well I want to tell you a little bit about what this book is about.It's about a girl named Desi who is hiv free and is trying to stop smoking and who wants a baby who is hiv positive and who wants to take care of that baby.In my opinion i think this book is exciting to me because it tells you the problems Desi is having and what she does And how she's gonna stop doing what she is doing.I recommend this book to people who like exciting books about drama and that tells you about people's lives.

I liked this book bacuase is told me about a little girl that was born with HIV. Also that seh was born HIV positive. I liked this book also becasue it has great details of what the young girl went through since she was born. I mostly liked this book bacaue of the was it decribes the characters are doing, and what is on in their mind at that time and place in the book. The sadest part was that when i read this book that I have felt the same pain as Alicia does in the book because my grandma Burger died of being HIV positive back in January of 2005.

Alicia was a unique and really nice baby. I didn't really think she should of got putt in the hospital because her mom didn't want her. The book teaches us that anyone can help the hospital and help little kids. It also teaches us that even though you got put in a hospital because your mom didn't want you, don't mean you're not a nice person. One example was when people started to tease a girl because she helped the hospital take care of kids.

Alicia was a great baby. She loved everybody. She knew what was wrong and what was right. Even though, she was only two.

This is a great book for ANYONE to read!

I for one grabbed this book because I heard Dr. Nick on "Focus on the family" in an interview and again on another radio interview and held him to be a Christian based diet author with personal experience and a wealth of knowledge about the medical side of getting thin. However, the book came across to me as an attempt to appeal to the masses and sort of put the credit to God on the back burner or off to the side or in the shadows and I can't be as inspired by that as a christian or for that matter, before my salvation. I did learn some great insights from Dr. Nick but I am a believer in the power of God to do everything and that just didn't come accross in this book. So with regret I say this book is a testament to Dr. Nicks' great triumph over the "Idolotry" of food as he said in his interview, but it just didn't get me to go along. I hope he will in the future let his faith be more prominent in his story telling and trust in our Lord for the results more than his publisher. If you would like a good hepful book as a compliment to this one may I suggest,Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

Interesting in how he lost weight. We all do not have the money to do as he did. But it had to be hard for him to hold to what he had started. same as any diet. The change first has to be in your mind and heart before it will become part of your outsides. Believe first see results later.

all are needed in abundance to lose weight. the more you are overweight the more you need them. constantly as your companions for the process of getting your body in good shape to do life.

It is not a diet book. it is not a how to do it book. it is a how i did it and why i did it fast paced, quick fun read.

being fat is sin. it stops you from being that good and faithful servant that the faith requires and God expects. the author leads the way, walks the path, is a real leader for this important insight.

This isn't a typical "diet" book, which I like. I've read enough diet books in my life to understand the basic concepts. Instead, this book chronicles one person's journey, including the heartache associated with being obese as well as the triumphs of losing signficant amounts of weight. It has been surprisingly motivational - I find myself thinking of the story throughout the day when I struggle with something, telling myself that if he did it, I can certainly do it too. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

I loved this book. I believe that I would have liked it even if I were not fighting weight problems. It is entertaining and educational in ways that few books are. Frankly, I generally do not believe that a book can be educational if it is not also entertaining. This is a difficult standard to meet, but Dr. Nick has done it.
Unfortunately, it will be hard to duplicate his method because few of us can take a year or so away from employment--even for life saving therapy.
I see that used copies are selling very cheap here at Amazon making the ultimate combination--education, entertainment, and value. Order several copies of this book to use as gifts.
