This book is great to read if you are contemplating a mastectomy and reconstruction. Its info was great to know before consulting with plastic surgeons and choosing the right one for me. The practical suggestions of preparations and after surgery suggestions make me feel more confident about what is ahead.
The most complete guide to reconstruction.

Anyone who has to deal with breast cancer and reconstruction should read this comprehensive book written easy to understand and with empathy. It's so important to be informed before going through this major impact on your life. I've been dealing with recurrent breast cancer but this is the first time for reconstruction. Breast cancer decisions are very personal but we can make more educated decisions and this book helps immeasurably.

I haven't compared this to other books about the subject, but from my research on-line, this seemed to cover all the bases in a very complete and easy-to-understand way. If you're facing decisions regarding breast reconstruction, I highly recommend this book. This is an excellent companion book to "Dr Susan Love's Breast Book", which covers all aspects of breast cancer.

This is a great resource for the newly-diagnosed, and a well-written, gripping bio - but it is far more than that. ... What an moving reliance on the power of prayer! What an awesome testimony of faith! I loved the anecdote about the 'pennies from Heaven'!

A BIG 'thank you' to this author!I am confident that there are few people who will not profit by the information contained in this book. Especially in view of the so-called 'Pandemic which is looming over all of us, I feel that it is imperative for everyone to know how dangerous it is to be 'overloaded' with iron - which, to bacteria, fungi and viruses, is like 'fertilizer' to plants! This riveting, well-written, 'first-person' account alerts readers to the perils of iron accumulation in the body.

More than just about a disease!.
On another website, I saw this book described as the 'definitive book about Hemochromatosis', and I agree. However,a prominent researcher has written that it is the story of a remarkable man and an extraordinary relationship. He was right. - It's more than a layman's reference to genetic disorder. It's a consummate love story. Love at first sight...the enduring adoration of a teenager for a young man; which would lead her, in time, along an thorny path and against all odds, to a fight against ignorance of a disease. That fight has culminated in the saving of lives around the world.

CANCER ON $5 A DAY: HOW HUMOR GOT ME THROUGH THE TOUGHEST JOURNEY OF MY LIFE comes from a stand-up comedian who discusses her how humor got him through his battle with cancer. From his banter with nurses to his search for alternative options, CANCER ON $5 A DAY doesn't detract from cancer's seriousness - but it does offer a refreshing alternative to approaching it. Any health collection or general lending library needs this.

As an oncology nurse, I would like to thank Robert Schimmel for this book. Just because you have cancer doesn't mean you have to lose your sense of humor. Humor is the best coping mechanism. A lot of "humor and cancer" books are just not funny...very lame and "joke oriented". This is more situational and great for anyone with a "dry", "twisted" or "offbeat" sense of humor (you all know who you are). Robert says what a lot of my patients have been saying all of these years. And...believe it or not, I shared a similar conversation about "merkens" with one of my patients who was a 65 year old woman, and we both howled until we cried.
I enjoyed Schimmel on Stern in the past, but wasn't a huge fan. I am now a huge fan. This book is funny, extremely poignant and his lessons about cancer and life are right on target. This book is not for everyone, as some would consider it "off color". But it is very real and anyone who has gone through chemotherapy will get some good laughs out of it, as well as hope. I was extremely touched by his relationship with his MD, and loved his comments about oncology nurses and his fellow patients. I was weeping when he described his father's reaction when he felt like "giving up". A quick read, but a good one. I am buying this second copy to share with some of my patients (carefully selected patients). I loved everything about this book. I wish Mr. Schimmel many more years of good health and will definitely buy a ticket to see him when he comes to Boston.

"Cancer on $5.00 a Day" is great, especially if you have just come off five months of therapy for Chronic Lymphomocytic Leukemia (CLL). It expresses the feelings of most cancer patients upon diagnosis and during watch and wait. You always have the sword of death in your future.
I am immpresed with his cander with his oncologist. I have the same relationship to my oncologist. It is the only way to go as far as I am concerned
You will laugh till you cry at some of the passages as you go through the book. It is a quick read as I am an slow reader and finished it in a few hours.

I heard this book recommended on the radio as a "must read" for anyone struggling to deal with cancer. I did not find the book to be invaluable and was very put off with all the profanity and crude humor. It was going to be a Mother's Day gift for my mom who's battling cancer, but I think I'll have to find something else. I am glad I decided to read it myself before giving it to her as a gift. I would have been completely embarrassed.

Beth Witrogen McLeod's book Caregiving The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss, and Renewal is a must read for any person taking care of an ill loved one, whether they are a child, spouse and/or aging parent. My interview with Beth revealed a strong woman with a fierce detrmination to help other caregivers make the most of a very painful situation. Beth includes her own personal journey along with the stories of hundreds of people she has met online in her chat groups or in person during her many public appearances in her incredible book. As the creator and editor of HotFlash! a woman's online perimenopause/menopause magazine and online support group, I have found women in the same place as Beth. She has described so well in her book the guilt, the pain, the sorrow and yes, at times, the joy of taking care of a sick loved one. In attempting to find hope and love in a truly difficult situation, Beth guides us to make good decisions not only for the person needing care but for the person herself. She pulls back the curtain on this often overlooked yet important topic.
This is a must read for anyone taking care of a loved one and for the rest of us who will one day be in these extraordinary shoes.

In an ideal world, we'd all have parents who we would want to help in old age, and it would be our honor to help them in their old age as they have helped us in our youth.
However, for the children of substance abuse parents and/or mentally ill patients the answers do not come easy. Things are much more complicated than simply finding a place to live, and deciding how much time you can spend with said loved one.
I'm not trying to over simplify, because all decisions dealing with older loved ones are difficult, but I was kind of hoping it would have given me more direction as to when its important to protect yourself as well. Its easy to get caught up in the caretaker role, feeling like a matyr without thinking about wheither or not this is the best desicion for you and your immediate family. Especially, if its puts you at risk for other health issues.

If you are the type of over-anxious mom I am, you will want to have all your child's medical records in one place. This journal is a great tool for organizing and recording your child's doctor visits, illnesses, etc. It is small enough to put in your diaper bag and take to the dr's office where you can then pepper the dr. with all the questions you've written down in the journal. And it's got a cute cover to boot!

Although "The Doggy Bone Cookbook" is small, it is jam-packed with quick, easy to make recipes for natural dog biscuits that are sure to please even the most fussiest canine palettes! It even comes with a cute plastic doggy bone cookie cutter. I have already made four surefire hits from this book - Cinnabone, Pea-mutt Butter, Garlicky and Cheese, and Bark-B-Que, and my one-year-old Keeshond gobbles them right up. The ten recipes are easy and quick to assemble (making them quite appropriate for children to make!) and require minimal healthy ingredients for maximum taste. The book also includes helpful tips such as how to cook the biscuits to just the right consistency (something I had had problems with in the past). If you enjoying cooking, and care about feeding your dog foods and treats that contain natural ingredients (with no chemicals, food dyes or preservants), then this book is perfect for you!

I really enjoy making the recipes in this book and my dog really enjoys eating them (as do the dogs in his obedience class). I have only two issues with the book. First, I don't think that the batch sizes were changed from the original book to accomodate the smaller bone cookie cutter size, because I always end up with many more treats than it says I should have (not that my dog is complaining). Also, there are no recipes for dogs who have corn and wheat allergies as all call for either corn or wheat flour although I'm sure with a little work you could substitute oat or rice flour. All in all a fun and creative book!

In reading "The End of Diets", I found it so refreshing that someone had written about eating from a personal voice that really spoke to me. I have read countless books on eating and dieting and they all say the same thing, but this one actually explains WHY we eat and what tools are at our disposal to finally, finally, finally eradicate the behavior for life.
I have read "The End of Diets" several times and each time I get something new from it, it has literally changed my life. Because of its insight I have been doing yoga for over a year now and have not been on a "diet" for the first time since I was 12 years old. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is on that roller coaster of dieting and constantly looking for that book that is going to "be the one" that is going to help them.

I got a lot from de la Altagracia's heartfelt guide to healing emotional eating, both as a professional counselor and on a personal level. It is a shame that this book suffers from a lack of editing with grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout.
Some of the author's suggestions are familiar and one could dismiss this book as nothing new, however de la Altagracia brings a deeply felt commitment to her process of healing the pattern of "eating through emotions". She succeeds in engaging the reader on a personal, not just intellectual level.
I appreciate the integration of body-awareness and body work into the book's program. The author's approach synthesizes cognitive, emotional, and body-centered methods into a multi-modal strategy. She also provides a simplified explanation of the myriad of diet options currently vying for attention.
De la Altagracia emphasizes the life-long nature of the healing journey, instilling hope and realism.

when i first started to read this book i felt it was going to be someone's success story and that if you did this and that it would work. luckily i kept going past my judgement and allowed myself to hear my excuses and my fears and my past wanting me to stay fat, that has allowed me to stop dieting and just start being, not doing anything but slowly allowing myself to just sit with myself and learn about myself that i wasn't willing to look at and love before. i don't think i will lose weight quickly, but i think i will finally be able to have a balanced control over food.

This spring I read a number of books on emotional eating and thought this book dealt well with the problem, but less so with solution. Then I found The truth about addiction and recovery, by Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky in my local library and bingo! It helped me both to understand the problem, the triggers and to design solutions. In other words, it enabled me to custom tailor my life in a way of which I can be proud. Most of all, it was illuminating to get away from the "disease" (think Alcoholics Anonymous) model of addiction. A very hopeful book and I recommend it highly.
I loved this book!

This book is highly recommended for anyone struggling with any type of eating disorder, whether it be anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating or whatever. I read this book and re-read it again because it was so wonderful. There are no 'magic cures' offered in the book. Instead, it offers hope for those of us who are emotional eaters. Reason why we 'emotionally eat' are discussed, as are many different types of dealing with emotional hunger. There are a lot of books available that discuss eating disorders and emotional eating, but this is one of the best. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Overall, I really like this cookbook. I was looking for new, exciting dishes that didn't pile on the calories. This certainly delivers. I've only made a handful of recipes but have yet to be disappointed.
This Cookbook is ESSENTIAL to healthy eating!

If you are looking for a myriad of tasty meals: appetizers, soups, salads, sides, main entrees and holiday menus that guests will rave about and ALL of the recipies are healthy, this is the cookbook for you. I have purchased several copies and given them away as gifts as my friends have complimented me on my dishes. My secret was this cookbook. Many of the meals are easy although there are some that are moderate or more complicated. Regardless of your cooking level, take the chance and learn to eat and cook well -- Bon appetite!

This is a great cookbook. It breaks down the recipes, tells you how much time they each take and gives an indication of how difficult it will be to make. The recipes I've made so far have all been great. I highly recommend this for people needing to find diet recipes.

It is not always easy to find healthy-eating cookbooks with delicious tasting recipes. However, this cookbook is the exception. The recipes are tasty, the instructions clear and easy to follow, and all the nutritional information is listed. I have been on Weight Watchers and it was no problem calculating the points of each recipe, and finding some new, exciting and delicious dish to cook for supper. What I have done is share this cookbook with "the gals as work", and they have been just as enthusiastic about the recipes as I am. This cookbook was well worth the money!

My husband and I spent almost an entire summer eating out of this cookbook. The recipes are fantastic, especially if you aren't used to cooking with things like whole-wheat flour or dark, leafy greens. After buying this book, making homemade pizza with whole-wheat crust became a weekly event. What's really cool is that it inspired us to be more creative with healthy ingredients as well. We've done countless, healthy variations on the abovementioned recipe, and the Basic Chicken Saute recipe is one of the easiest, quickest, and most versatile recipes ever. All you really need is chicken and whatever healthy things you've got in the pantry or fridge. I also really enjoyed the vegetarian section. I'm not a vegetarian, but I enjoy having a couple meat-free meals per week. These were creative, flavorful recipes without a lot of that fake stuff that's supposed to make you feel like you're eating meat. In fact, all the recipes use real, honest ingredients; nothing spooky. Highly recommended.

I recently read this book, and I can't honestly say that I liked it. I too have been diagnosed with MS. I'm happy that Mr. Lander can find humor in his condition, however I find nothing he had to say not in the least bit funny.
MS is a terrible diease that affects the Central Nervous System and there's nothing funny about that. Even the title of the book is seriously upsetting(How Squiggy caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn't Tell Nobody). You can't catch MS, and to put that in print is misleading.
I take my MS, the treatment for it, and all the symptoms very seriously. I have no desire to joke about them.
Some of the information in his book were very informative and very much worth reading, however I believe his approach is less than ideal.

When my father finally told me he had MS (like David Lander, he kept it a secret), he suggested I read this book. The insight it gave me was priceless. Everyone will find their own path, but I can tell you that by sharing his experiences, Mr. Lander has helped me to be the best son (and friend) that I can be.
David Lander has a great story!

I just loved this book. It is a very quick read and very upbeat. For someone with MS or caring for someone with MS it is a story you can relate to. My husband was recently diagnosed with MS and has been very reluctant to read anything about the disease. I am going to have him read this book because while I whink it might confirm some of his fears, at the same time it does so in a positive manner.

The book is a quick read. Sometimes you feel very alone with MS. This book will help you feel better. And, it explains some of the MS symptoms that you are experiencing better than a medical text. It will put some words on your feelings.
