I got this book hoping to read about the science behind grains and how our bodies process them. (I have been trying to eat healthier) This book advocates a lot of junk food surprisingly, and it geared entirely to celiac disease. I was under the impression that it would be good for anyone just thinking about giving up grains, but it was not. I only gave this 2 stars because I didn't like it, if you have celiac disease and do not want to eat a raw food diet, than you would like it more.

This is a vrey helpful book

My husband asked, "Another book about gluten free living. How many do you need"
This should have been the first book I bought. Is is very helpful with lots of detail without getting so technical I get lost. I now have a far better understanding of my disease and how to more successfully live with it.
I especially appreciate the parts intended to help me deal with the depression and feelings of isolation. And, the anger because so many just don't get how difficult it is to live this lifestyle. This diet is very labor and emotionally intensive that there are many times I just want to give up. Even the dietitian to whom I was referred knew less than I.

Read this book if you are especially newly diagnosed. It will help get your through some rough times.

What a plethora of information!

Danna has taken what can be an overwhelming process and broken it into a seamless set of sections that have served me as a reference to my four year old's allergy needs. Korn gives a lay manner of understanding celiac sprue, wheat-free, gluten free and other issues that manifest from these special diets. She gives personal examples and guides the reader into being a positive person with an outlook towards family changes in order to keep everyone balanced.

I thought I was buying a cookbook! This book does have many recipes in it but...Much to my suprise I bought this book and found out that I had Celiacs disease! I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and no one else knew either! This book explains allergy as well as the disease side of gluten. People with either will appreciate and benefit from this book tremendously! Thank you for the wake up call that changed my life!

I highly recommend this book to anybody looking to live the gluten free lifestyle. It's full of knowledgeable facts from a mother of a child with celiac disease. She knows her stuff!!! I read the book and use it often as a reference to foods I should/shouldn't eat. I also love the symptoms and useful advice about living gluten free. I feel much more knowledgeable about the subject after reading this book! I also love the recipes!! :)

This book is a dietary cornacopia of natural food information.Discussed are 101 major organic foods from almonds to yogurt, from soup to nuts, alpha to omega. At first,i assumed it was another cookbook on natural foods and processed foodstuffs added. It has some one hundred plus all natural recipes ,that are of optimal healthy choices and tasty sounding too.A fair amount of wise information on each food object. Each one has a historical note and the root meaning about it.Food lore and place of origin are discussed. What vitamins and their beneficial elements are provided . Also what aliments the foods can aid, prevent and remedy for you.Suggestional tips on selecting, storing, preparing and serving them. What i like most about the book,is that it's an excellent source of nutritional real food information, often overshadowed in our modern reprocessed consumer culture.

Finally a book that makes sense of all of the information out there about nutrition. This book was easy to reference, and best of all a common sense approach to foods we eat every day, that wasnt dry, too technical or too basic. As a nurse I recommend it as a practical way to utilize common sense nutrition. I would definitely recommend this anyone who has had to fish through the other volumes of nonsense that are out there.

Simplify your food shopping. This new book 101 Foods that could Save your Life cuts to the chase about which foods to purchase at your local grocery store and Farmers' Market along with providing recipes using each food that are beautiful, delicious, and (yes!) healthy, too. 101 Foods is well organized, easy (and FUN!) to read and then read again. It is chock-full of information about each food, ranging from where it is grown to how it helps to keep our bodies healthy. The information is beneficial to people focused on optimizing either cancer survivorship or cancer prevention as well as those who are trying to reduce the risk of or manage other conditions like heart disease and diabetes with good food and good nutrition. I'm going to enjoy making these delicious recipes throughout 2008 and for many years beyond, too.

Amazingly Simple Way To Add These Power Foods To Your Diet

I received 101 Foods about a month ago and would have written a review earlier, however my 13 year old daughter took such an interest in the book that I was not able to even look at it until about a week ago. As a family that does what they can to eat healthy foods, most of which come from Whole Foods, I never thought that I would be surprised by anything that this book could throw at me.....boy was I wrong. What you need to understand is this book is a cookbook, a cookbook that introduces the reader to specific foods, many of which you have probably never heard of, then outlines the health benefits and suggests a recipe to get them added to your meal planning!

So many books of this type are more about what not to eat, whereas this book is mainly attempting to educate the reader on some of these "healing" foods and figuring out an easy way to get you to try them. The honesty that Dave Grotto conveys in this book is fun and comical. It seems that even a health guru can fall victim to the same issues that we all face when we don't eat right or exercise. Dave's self admitted need to listen to his own advice reveals just how powerful some of these foods can be!

If your looking for ways to get more energy in your life, lower your cholesterol, balance your blood sugar, and even boost your immune system to fight off sickness, then adding some of these 101 Foods to your diet can help. Reading this book was an enjoyable journey as our family continues to add variety to our diets, especially the variety that can save your life.

I guess I'll have to give the book back to my 13 year old so she can get her requests on the weekly grocery list!

I am happy to see the Gokhale method available in print.
I have been fortunate to have been taught by Esther Gokhale. The simple ways to correct posture, while walking, standing, sitting or sleeping, have helped me tremendously. I no longer sleep with a pillow tucked under my belly, and maintaning the right posture while sitting in my car or at my easle has enabled me to go for many hours without feeling the stress in my upper shoulders. Gokhle mehtod has been easy to incorporate into the daily routine, making tedious chores painless and giving my image an overall boost. I truly believe that this method should be encouraged in every family along side with "eat your veggies"!

I highly recommend this book for mother's, teens and for anyone who would like to stand taller and gain an elegant posture.

This is a wonderful book for anyone with back/neck pain, or who wants to improve his/her posture. I'd also recommend it for health professionals who are not satisfied with the status quo explanations that people just must have structural pain.

Gokhale's explanations just make *so* much sense. The set of evidence she puts together is overwhelming and a reasonable departure of the conventional wisdom (which says for you to tuck your back, for example).

However, don't have the illusion that you are going to read the book and magically solve your problems. I mean, you are going to intellectually appreciate and agree with it. But it is going to take commitment and effort to reteach your body a better posture. I don't rate this as a book deficiency though. I guess it is pretty much unavoidable.

If you don't have back pain, you should still read this book

Don't let the title mislead you. I don't have back pain (or neck, shoulder, hip, knee, foot pain), but this book was still very useful to me.

Sitting:
This book helps me sit more comfortably at work for longer periods of time. My back feels great because my spine is getting a nice stretch out of sitting. Learning how to elongate my neck and release tension in my neck muscles makes it feel a lot better too, whereas before, I would feel tight and cramped in my neck after working on my computer for a while. Also, sitting on a stool, on the floor, or any place that doesn't have a backrest, is easy to do now. I no longer have to force my body to "sit up straight". I can sit tall with my muscles completely relaxed-- so much so that when I breathe, my back feels like it's getting a massage!

Sleeping:
After following the directions for Stretchlying in the book, I've found that I sleep more deeply, don't wake up in the middle of the night, wake up in the morning in the same position I went to sleep in, and feel so much more refreshed. I had no idea that my posture played such an important role in the quality of my sleep . . .

Running:
I've been surprised at the ways the techniques in this book benefit my running. I'm able to run more comfortably, longer without getting as tired, and faster. Amazing.

A better back for better riding

Review Date: 2008-04-14
After years of coping with a tender back following my almost daily horseback riding, Esther Gokhale's program has been a boon. I find my posture in the saddle has improved--no longer unintentionally leaning to one side or the other. My legs more easily wrap around my horse giving me more security when jumping fences.Engaging my "inner corset", as explained in the book in great detail, has helped prevent the jarring of the lower back when landing after a fence.
Since I plan to continue to ride for many more years, protecting my back is of great importance. Esther's class and book give me the tools to do this comfortably.

I read an interview with the author in Mothering Magazine that I really enjoyed and decided to look for the book. I was especially hoping for some more information about starting solid foods and using formula until 18 months in children weaned before then that the author spoke about in the interview. However, I found this book to be more of an academic explanation of attachment parenting. It actually seemed more geared towards medical professionals (ironic considering the title, I know) than parents. Well written and from the attachment parenting perspective I sought--just a bit too hefty for me.

MY PARENTING BIBLE!

Review Date: 2007-11-06
This has become my parenting bible. When nothing worked to cure my baby of his colic and his reduced nursing, pulling at the breast and coming off constantly while screaming and crying, this book helped me get to the ROOT of the problem and not just cover up the symptoms. It CURED his colic! My doctor once told me if I gave her the cure for colic, she'd be a millionaire and if I had a million dollars, I would have given it up for the information contained in this book!

Not only did it contain information that I had never read in any of the other great AP books that I have, but it pointed me in the direction of other under-recognized topics and a glossary of AMAZING books that opened my eyes to the world.

I actually purchased a bunch of these books out of my own pocket, and I'm on social assistance, and gave them away to women whom I saw had children with colic and other symptoms of food allergies. I also gave some away to parents who were letting their newborns cry their poor little hearts out in strollers and car seats while shopping at the mall.

I know this book will help anyone who has enough sense to read it!

E. Prago's unstated assumption from July 28, 2006
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-14
Apparently E. Prago believes that only people with a specific type of degree or "license" know how to read and interpret research. If we apply this principle elsewhere, only "licensed" plumbers know anything about plumbing...only "licensed" beauticians know anything about beauty, etc.

The medical establishment--by which I mean to refer to the conventional practice of "medicine" in the allopathic hospitals and doctors' offices of the Western world--kills more people each year due to negligence, misdiagnosis, and sheer incompetence, than all car accidents and other accidents combined (google for the statistics on this, if you are inclined to doubt).

Surely we could at least open our minds to the *possibility* that there are intelligent people outside the good-ol-boys'-club (AMA) who can evaluate research data, draw informed conclusions, and pass along the relevant information, whilst citing their sources so any interested parties can review the original research themselves, and form their own conclusions.

All of which Dr. Palmer does admirably.

After all, it is just SO easy to mount an 'ad hominem' attack. You just say that 'so-and-so isn't "expert" enough' to suit you....and, Voila!

But you can say this about *anyone*, whether they have an M.D. or not. When people who DO have an M.D. say *exactly* the same things, it is oh-so-easy to dismiss their equally-reasonable conclusions, by perfunctorily labeling them as "quacks".

Read the book. Make up your own mind.

This is an interesting and informative book for husbands whose wives have been diagnosed with cancer. A lot of the book is common sense but it has informative passages that help with the awkward social situations that come up in conversations and with friends. It helps take some of the stigma sting out of answering stupid questions that people ask. I liked this book a lot and recommend it for reading.

I think it is a bit overly long but a good weekend with a 6 pk. of cold Bud Lite will easily get you through the entire book.

This was the most helpful book I read after my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Everyone is different and reacts differently to treatment. Instead of this book saying "here is how I survived" it covers how quite a few different people dealt with important issues. The book helped me anticipate some of the problems we might have during chemo and radiation. And more importantly, it gave me a lot of ideas to try and many of them worked for us. My wife just had her 2 year checkup and scan and is cancer free. Keep a positive attitude - you can get through this and this book can help.

The book offers numerous tips on coping, both from the author's own experience and from other husbands. My only complaint is that the title is too limiting. This is a valuable resource for family members, friends, significant others, etc.

Havne't tried the cheesecake, but I know that the sloppy joes are one of my family's favorites. In fact, most of our favorite recipes are in this cookbook. I never used a recipe for chili before buying this book. Now I use Susan's recipe. Ok, I deviate from it a little, but we love the black beans in our chili now. My only complaint is that my copy doesn't have an alphabetized index in the back. This makes it kind of a pain to look up favorites. I hope this is fixed in later editions.

I just bought my second copy of The Complete Medicinal Herbal (my first was lost) and am so happy to have it back again!

Ms. Ody certainly knows her herb uses and she shares that knowledge in a straightforward, understandable manner. The images are plentiful and make plant identification easy. Luckily, while this book is currently out of print, it can often be found used, for an affordable price.

Be you an armchair herbalist, a writer in need of common sense reference or just curious, this book is well worth the having.

I thought this book was the most complete herbal book I have ever seen. Why? The A-Z listings with the pictures were great. She breaks down the several ways each herb can be used and for what along with making it easy to understand. She includes dried herbs, oil, tincture etc. She shows a picture of each, what to do with each and how to do it. With illustrations she shows how to harvest and dry, how to make herbal remedies, (again with picture instructions) Tinctures, infused oils, along with and creams and ointments. I thought it was extremely detailed and designed for the beginner. I am a true believer in natural medicine and the use of essential oils and herbs but I don't want to take classes or do a huge study to know what or how to use them. This is the answer. Simple, good pictures, complete as I will ever need and for the beginner and advanced alike. This book is a must have!

A must have book! If looking for an exhaustive herbal, you might try the German monographs, and others (although I've yet to see an all exhaustive on herbology), but for home or professional use, this is an awesome book! Has some projects, and many uses for the herbs that are in this wonderful book.

A library wouldn't be complete without it!

A little frustrating

The book is lovely as far as pictures goes, but she leaves out some basic stuff that a beginner wants to know. I managed to figure it out, but it wasn't easy. For instance, she tells you to use a simple, but then doesn't explain the term.

I bought the book specifically to make eucalypus oil and a cough syrup, but she really doesn't tell you which method, hot or cold. With the herb Comfrey, she tells you it's a hot infusion and with Marigold she tells you it's a cold infusion. Being a beginner, I didn't know the difference between an infused oil and an essential oil, which caused alot of frustration. If she had devoted a couple of sentences under the infused oil section explaining that essential oils are very different and need specialized equipment, it would have saved me some frustration and less disappointment of the book. I had to find this out by searching on the internet.

She is from the United Kingdom and all her recipes are in european measures, so they all have to be converted, and I really had a hard time with that, maybe you won't. Although she does give you a conversion table for dosages. I did manage to make a cough syrup but I had doubts about my calculations. My husband is still alive, by the way.

She mentions Cherry bark as one of the remedies for coughs but doesn't have Cherry bark in the visual directory, which means there is no information on it at all.

After having said all of that, the descriptions and pictures of each plant is wonderful. Also, she lists combinations that are good together, like for coughs. There are 85 herbs listed in the book. It makes a good reference, but I will definately need another book to supplement it.

Cool Stuff they should teach in school is a guide to jobs, people skills, goals, and money for young adults written by two normal teenagers. This book covers everything from trying to figure out what you want to do with your life and how your attitude actually determine how successful you'll be through how to make a good impression and what not to do during a job interview to how to manage your money and how to make your savings work for you.

I loved the conversational style of this book as well as the straightforward no punches pulled advice. I also liked the colourful Cool Stuff quotes and 2K tips. This is the advice your best friend would give you if he could. Cool Stuff they should teach in school will make a really great gift for any teenager or young adult needing just a little bit of nudge to start their future on the right track.

From the standpoint of intent, scope & substance, this wonderful book is exactly similar to 'The Power of Focus for College Students' by Andrew Hewitt & Luc D'Adabie. I have reviewed this latter book earlier.

The 'Cool Stuff' book is apparently targetted at high school students (& graduates). The 'Power of Focus' book is targetted at high school graduates & college students, even though the delineation is really not an issue. The earlier book is written by two brothers during their late teen years, in 2004. The latter book, which has been published one year later, is written by two university graduates in their early twenties. This book is also an extension of the earlier 'The Power of Focus' by Les Hewitt, Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen, which is obviously targeted at adult professionals.

Essentially, the 'Cool Stuff' book is designed to help students GET REAL...to help them face a multitude of challenges as they grow from teens to young adults & while they move into the real world. The abundant information in this book are packed into bite-sized nuggets, illustrated with zany graphics.

Whereas, the 'Power of Focus' book is more sober of the two books, with abundant information, as well as inspiring stories, packed into nine focusing strategies. Tactically, it has been designed to help high school graduates & college freshmen in finding fulfilling career pathways.

While the 'Cool Stuff'book has a more light-hearted approach, both books generally help to answer these critical questions:

- why 70% of graduates are unhappy & disillusioned within five years of leaving college?
- what 3% of Yale students do that lead them to become wealthier than the other 97% combined?

One interesting point: The entrepreneurial flair of the authors of both books is exemplified by their own respective websites: namely ccolstuffmedia & focusedstudent, which continue to promote their books, seminars & workshops & other stuff.

One last point: The 'Power of Focus' book has a seemingly subtle & yet direct slant towards 'GET RICH' partly because of its association with Donald Trump...so it's also designed to help you build the financial future you so desire.

To sum up my review, both books are really great stuff! If you are a high school student or college freshman, I strongly urge you to go & get a copy to read & to learn how to maximise your high school - & college - experience & also how to deal with a rapdily changing world out there!

I picked up this book this week-end TO "BROWSE" and found myself into the book one hour later, still reading. WOW!!! I sure wish there would have been a book like this for my age group. But, I'm learning a thing or two even now with reading Kent and Kyle's book. This book is a must for any family with teens, pre-teens or adults still wanting to grow. I'm going to buy a copy for our church library, too. What an inspiration this book is-----for everyone! Thanks for writing it.

These guys rock

I am 17, and this book was so inspirational. I feel like I am ahead of the game, and that I will be able to face challenges in life no matter what they are. This is also a great book because it was written by guys about my age, so I totally understand what they are talking about, because they went through the same stuff I am. This book is awesome.
