Authoritative on the science, art, beauty, and experience of PilatesReview Date: 2007-07-21
The author refrained from venturing into areas outside his domain of specialized expertise such as nutrition or unrelated topics, which added to his credibility and emphasized the depth of indulging in the art of Pilates. The extensive number, simple content, and logical sequence of the photographs, which are properly labeled and placed in each lesson, all makes the book an easy read and useful tool for learning. Above all, the author himself demonstrates his role as a model for the reader.
The book has a brief history of Pilates, its benefits, and its principles. Those are grouped under ten principles that address awareness, balance, breathing, concentration, body centering, gaining control, efficiency of motion, flow of energy, precision, and harmony. The main emphasis of Pilates practice is described in terms of regional anatomy that is brought under the control of the mind such that it serves the purpose of skillful mobility.
The book falls into twelve chapters that deal with enhancing the mind and body, alignment and movement, and the different methods of accomplishing the objectives of motion control. The different methods entail: Mat work that falls into 70 pages, Universal Reformer that spans about 100 pages, Cadillac 40 pages, Wanda Chair 20 pages, Barrels 20 pages, Ped-a-Pul 7 pages, Arm Chair 7 pages, and Magic Circle 14 pages. The last chapter lumps all exercises in sample routines that facilitate quick referencing.
The major drawback of the book is the use of advanced tools in some lessons that might not be available to the majority of readers. Yet, the author has little to do with what others could afford and should not take the blame for such hurdle.
The priceless gain attained from reading this book is the development of conscious awareness of each part of the body and being able to survey what goes wrong on time to enhance performance. And, performance exactness is what the author is expert in teaching and in practicing.

your pets can live longer healthier lives for less money and be happierReview Date: 2007-05-09
I read the whole book Sunday and can't say enough about how wonderful it is. To be able to write like that and to give so much useful information, even references to things that are not fun for dogs to have happen to them, is a gift to all companion animals and their people. I loved the writing style and learned so much. Our pets are important family members. This book teaches you how to keep them healthier by vaccinating less, feeding them nutritional food that can in the end cost less and save on veterinary bills. The books is a great resource for everything you want to know about your dog's happiness and health.

Good beginning resource for self-massageReview Date: 2008-04-13
I thought this book presented a fair amount of information describing the importance of massage and how it can augment stretching (e.g., when we stretch, we relax the length of the muscle, but we don't address the width). I also thought that he did a good job (briefly) discussing the seven different types of massages. He also gives an example of a self-massage routine.
However, I couldn't help feeling "that's it?" when I read through the book, and that feeling may have been exacerbated by the very large print used in the slightly oversized book. In every section, I felt like I wanted more information about what he was talking; again, this may have been a result of looking at so much white space. There was nothing, perhaps, wrong with the book- I just felt like there should have been more.
This was informative enough to make me want to find out more, but not enough to justify having it on my shelf.
Relaxed Muscles are in Your HandsReview Date: 2008-03-17
The book is broken down into three sections. The first parts lays out the argument for why self-massage is important. Second, he gives us a detailed guide on how to self-massage. Finally, he looks at some related fields like acupressure, trigger points, and tools.
The heart of the book is the second section. This part not only includes not only words but large black and white photos to show us just what he is talking about. This really helped me get a clear picture.
I read the book last week in preparation for an Ultimate Frisbee tournament I participated in this weekend. Both evenings, I tried a little self-massage on myself. Granted, I'm still sore today, but I think I am less sore then I would have been. And all day long I was massaging my legs at work to help them recover. Frankly, I wish I had read and started using these techniques a few weeks ago so I'd be better at them by now.
The only real flaw with the book is the author's tendency to overstate his case. In the first part, he sites several studies showing the benefits of massage, then goes on to state that this probably applies to self-massage. While I tend to agree with him, that didn't sit quite right with me. In another place, he discusses the ways a shower can be a massage parlor. Again, it is generally good advice, but I did roll my eyes when he said a razor can give a massage to your face or legs. Maybe it's just me, but that just doesn't hold true. I even tried his mental techniques, but that just made me even more uncomfortable that I was running a sharp object over my face.
While the book is obviously aimed at athletes, the message really applies to anyone.
There is little in this book that is truly earth shattering. But the principles and ideas are good and well worth considering. I know I will be making them part of my normal workout routine.
Helped me through a painful weight lifting injuryReview Date: 2008-04-20
I don't mean to imply you shouldn't see a professional. They certainly have their place and there are times when we need them. But we can do a lot for ourselves and self-massage is one of those things.
I know when one of those leg cramps from hell hits me in the middle of the night, I grab the leg and begin the massage. I often stand up and begin to put pressure on the leg. Often the leg will have some residual mild pain for one or two days afterwards. Again, self-massage will help. But usually if I massage it immediately and thoroughly, I won't have the pain for long.
At any rate, I followed the neck and shoulder self-massage in the book and got instant relief from pain. And with each massage, the injury improved. My mobility improved. Of course, I also did some light weight lifting and light exercises for the shoulder too.
You don't have to be an athlete to get full benefit of self-massage. Fact is, the easy-to-follow self-massages in this book will be valuable to anyone, of any age.
Highly recommended.

Useful, practical guide to self-massageReview Date: 2008-05-08
The first of the three parts of the book deals with the theory of massage - reviewing its, known for centuries, benefits for the body, the advantages of self-application of the massage, activation of the happiness hormones - endorphins, and introduction to the muscle groups, naming the individual muscles on the photos.
The second part is concerned with the basic techniques of massage. Seven basic stroke types are introduced and the sample massage of particular body parts is shown. I should mention that the photographs in the sample massage (although they are very nice and add to the aesthetic value of the book) could also be more instructive (like the ones showing the strokes, which are very helpful), perhaps in series showing the moves. This is the only flaw I could think about though...
The third and last part shows the wide array of additional applications, which expand the plethora of possibilities initiated by self-massage and round up the practice. I especially appreciate the rules of safety, which are especially important in the home setting.
This book is a useful addition to the library of anyone with an active lifestyle, and repeated use is guaranteed!
Midwest Book Review - April 2008Review Date: 2008-04-02
Rich Poley breaks this illustrated handbook into 3 sections: Why Every Athlete Needs Massage, Learning Self-Massage, and Going Deeper: Getting More from Your Massage. He's included notes, references, and an index. He focuses on seven simple strokes (gliding, squeezing, squeezing/rolling, pressing, pressing/rolling, drumming, and rock and rolling), and he's filled the book with interesting facts and information about massage routines, how and when to use massage, acupressure, trigger points, and more.
Using simple and easy-to-understand instructions, the author has provided a terrific resource for athletes, coaches, and non-athletes as well. Highly recommended. ~Lori L. Lake, Midwest Book Review

A "Must Read" book when faced with breast cancerReview Date: 2003-03-14

Laughing through the PainReview Date: 2003-07-28
What is more healing than laughter when you are faced with a situation you can't control? Even science has shown the healing power of laughter. Cancer isn't funny, but somehow the author finds a way to heal through her own vibrant wit. Many of the chapters are rather serious until the end when she gives the punch line.
This is a book about courage, hope and humor. Laura Jensen Walker demonstrates her ability to face the challenge of cancer and fight it with faith, hope and "mild/laid back" humor.
I learned a lot about reconstruction, chemo and was amazed at how Laura's husband stood by her through the entire process.
"How to Lose Thirty Pounds in Thirty Days: The Chemo Diet Way. The original Slim-Fast liquid diet. (But not one I'd recommend.)" was an interesting chapter to be sure. This spells it all out, tells you what chemo is all about and it isn't fun especially if your nurse forgets to give you "zofran." Yes somehow Laura finds a way to appreciate the effects of rapid weight loss even when it is the result of chemo.
If you want to understand what a cancer survivor goes through, this is the book. I recently read "Knowing Stephanie" which I can also recommend for the detailed information and pictures.
The last chapter on what really matters was also quite inspirational.

A must-read for anyone facing breast cancerReview Date: 2002-12-05
Walker includes a lot of detail, from procedures like reconstruction, chemotherapy right down to the day-to-day patient care and how she felt emotionally. But this is not a gruesome story--instead it is intended to help anyone else along the road to recovery. The best chapter "Where do I go from here" gives eight important points (such as taking charge of your treatment, talking to your family, dropping the Wonder Woman cape for women who do it all) and also useful addresses and a list of books.
This book is interesting reading for any woman, but if you have a loved one facing this challenge or if you are a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, you should get this book. Nothing I have read comes close to this book for frankness and assistance.
Silly, Real, RefreshingReview Date: 2002-09-07
Laura Jensen Walker has something to say about breast cancer. She's a survivor. She has faced this beast, and now is able to articulately help readers smile in the midst of a tough time.
In "Thanks for the Mammogram!" Jensen tells her story. Most of the book details a narrative of her diagnosis, treatment and how she survived. However, in reflecting through the most difficult of moments, she draws us in ala Erma Bombeck into candid silliness. It is as practical as it is funny.
Boldly bringing humor into a discussion of cancer marks this book as a standout among its peers. Having lost my mother to lung cancer and flipping through too many solemn tomes of pop-psychology, I read through Jensen's book refreshed. I wished my mom could've read this book. At a certain point, cancer is cancer, and anyone with any cancer would enjoy "Thanks for the Mammogram!"
Each page is a different view of her situation. For example, she spends a delightful chapter on the end of her chemo, and how she and her husband (a 'Disnoid') celebrated this landmark at Disneyland. We read of her struggle to find a decent book to read (unless Mickey Mouse's various adventures appealed to an adult woman, that is).
The chapters are in very chewable chunks--none too long.
With chapters like, "To Baldly Go Where I've Never Gone Before" (a consideration of Capt. Jean Paul-Luc Picard, Michael Jordan and other sexy baldies, she looks for the upside of a hairless head), you, like me, might find a new way of seeing what so many people go through.
She admits her fears, but pushes also the benefits of having a realistic, yet positive view of dealing with breast cancer. Jensen explains her husband's point of view in the whole matter (even letting him write a chapter, "Her Body, His Pain"). She walks the reader through the process, citing how she related to people who had or didn't have cancer.
I fully recommend "Thanks for the Mammogram!" by Laura Jensen Walker. It is a very worthy gift for those whom you love who have cancer, or know someone who does.

I did think the authors could have done better with their chapter on the sinking itself though. As it is they wrote little text and tell the story through picture captions! It is as if a book on the Kennedy assassination covered details of the flight to Dallas and then said little about the shooting itself. I also feel the authors were a bit too soft on Lord of the Californian.
