Unique and valuable perspective

Review Date: 2008-05-22
I am currently re-reading this interesting book after a recent discussion involving studies -- among other things this book debunks 'medical terrorism' in which studies are used to frighten people unnecessarily. (The authors strongly encourage us to look more closely at the size and scope of studies before applying them to ourselves)

However, the book covers many more topics in emphasizing the importance of pleasure, including a focus on Work that makes and keeps us slaves to industry while cutting us off from significant others in our lives.

The authors aren't proponents of hedonism, but suggest that if we buy into conventional wisdom, we miss out on the joy life has to offer without any real improvement in our health or longevity.

Pleasure: the root of all health

Review Date: 2004-07-22
Pleasure as the root of all evil (too often equated with sex) has been converted from its true purpose as the only motivation and incentive that spurs people to action. The power of pleasure has quite simply been highjacked and converted into the exact opposite of its intended purpose to elevate mankind into achieving the impossible - whatever that impossible happens to be. Long recognized by founders of America by including the possible of impossibilities into the preamble of America's Declaration of Independence to properly document their perspective, and their newfound knowledge emerging from the tyranny of Kings and Queens, they set in motion the philosophy upon which American capitalism and entrepreneurship seeks to preserve that delicate relationship between man and the enjoyment of his life - spiritual, mental and physical - and at least, in theory, the same for women. Practice turns out to be much more elusive than planned despite the Constitutional protections because of our lack of consideration for each other of the fine boundaries that separate one from another in that sometimes elusive pursuit that is by definition individually selective, and guarantees that his life will be meaningful, important and happy secure in the natural rights defined as his privilege to define for himself what gives him pleasure - the expression of his free will nurtured within that promise of a free nation, America.

Fantastic book.

Healthy Pleasures

Review Date: 2002-08-21
Healthy Pleasures written by Robert Ornstein and David Sobel is a book about the medical benefits of pleasure, that is longer, healthier life.

The book is divided up into three parts and each of those has chapters relative to the topic. Healthy Pleasures proposes a new approach to the way women and men manage their health. This book is a readers guide through the maze of myths and misconceptions that stand in the way of health.

In the book the reader will find scores of practical suggestions, based on recent scientific discoveries, on how to live in a way that enriches, rather than just maintains, health: ways to mobilize positive beliefs, expectations, and emotions... from cognitive therapy, relaxation training, and successful behavior modification practices.

Because people are naturally drawn by the pleasure principle to many of the things which promote health, this makes the book easy to follow. The emphasis of this book is the importance of pleasing rather than punishing ourselves... food, drink, rest, work, sunrises and sunsets, too... in a refreshing affectionate light found in the brain's pleasure centers.

A truly healing book

This might be my favorite mind/body book. Through scientific research, it proves that pleasure is good for you, purpose, meaning, fun and laughter are good for you. In other words, the better your life, the better your health is likely to be. And the harder your life, the more health problems you are likely to have.

This is a profoundly healing message. It tells us not to be hard on ourselves, or on others. Not to blame ourselves or set up hundreds of hoops to jump through. That's not the way to be healthy or happy. Make your life easier and better, and good health is likely (though not guaranteed) to follow.

I have used this approach in my life with multiple sclerosis, my health coaching practice and my wellness workshops for years now with wonderful results. My book, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness, puts Sobel and Ornstein's research into practice. I remain a big fan of Healthy Pleasures

How to Tap into Cosmic Wisdom and Live a Better Life!

This remarkable book details the decline and death of the author's beloved husband, how she overcame the shock and sadness of his passing, and became a far better person in the process.
It is an incredibly intimate revelation of something that most people go through during their lifetimes--sometimes many times--taken to the highest level of understanding and resolution by a writer who was able to rise from the depths of despair to a state of enlightenment that put her into contact with her innerself and with the cosmos at large.
It is an inspirational story that will benefit all who read it.

I was initially drawn to "The Heart Knows the Way" by the beautiful cover illustration and the title. When I picked up the book and noted its size, I was instantly reminded of the half-dozen pocket-size books -- now dog-eared, time-worn and held together by masking tape -- that are my "go to" books when I need an attitude adjustment and to be reminded of and inspired by the goodness in life and in people. "The Heart Knows the Way" is a little book with mighty messages, and it now graces my collection of timeless treasures.

As I read The Heart Knows the Way, I was moved by the author's ability to write with such soul-baring honesty of the experience with her dying husband. Her struggle to find a more loving and enlightened way in which to share her beloved's final journey was intriguing. After years of facing feelings of helplessness and watching her mate lose awareness of their wonderful life, she finally turned within in desperation to seek communion with God. There was something universally familiar not only in her own concept of God, which she said was formed in childhood and ranged "from the ridiculous to the sublime," but in her very human reaction to actually making contact with God. It didn't surprise me that I came to care about these two people, the husband with an irreverent sense of humor, and the woman who was determined to continue their bond of love even when to all appearances it seemed impossible. It wasn't. This is a great read about real people living inspirational lives.

The soft cover version is very hard to read because the most important part of the illustration (the body part being discussed) is in the center crease. It is hard to see it without flattening the book completely. Also, most pages describe how the body part functions while some pages talk about things you can do to the body part (ears are for washing and drying? hmm, not what I would first think when explaining how we use our ears.)

Otherwise, I like the illustrations and text.

We started reading to my daughter when she was 2 months old. By three months she'd sorta figured out to actually look at the books while we were reading and was showing preferences (some got her wiggly and excited, some did not). She's 4 months now and this is probably her very favorite book. The two-page pictures are adorable, the rhyme is catchy, and body parts are one of the very few things in life she can relate to. I touch the matching body part (hands, feet, head, neck, and so on) as I read and she stares at the book as if greatly interested and wiggles and babbles when I touch the body part in question. There aren't many books for really little babies but this one does just fine. (I also highly recommend "Snail" by Fiona Watt and "Everyone's Sleepy" by Ed Vere.)

Somehow, my 14-month-old started identifying several of her own physical features (including "neck"!) by close approximations of their names after only 3 or 4 nights of reading this book before bed. Very shortly after, she started pointing out the same features in pictures of animals and people around the house. The illustrations are crystal clear in their intent, with only the last two pages presenting any difficulty (one covers elbow, arm and chin in one breath, and the other is for skin, which I imagine is tough to illustrate). I would recommend this book to anyone teaching the easy body parts to her/his child.

Dennis Henning's book, Hiding Under the Table, really inspired me. Even though I have never had an eating disorder, I have still suffered with emotional eating during chapters of my life. Reading about his journey to overcome his eating disorder helped me realize that I'm not alone and can get help, myself. I highly recommended this book to anyone not only suffering through eating disorders, but who really want to take a personal look at negative body image thoughts, personal relationships, spirituality, addictions, and self-forgiveness. Thank you Dennis for being such an inspiration to take charge of my own life, not just through learning how to overcome emotional eating but also by applying The Daily Process, 16 Points to Life.

Dennis Henning's book, "Hiding Under the Table" is the much needed alarm, giving a brutal, gut and soul-wrenching account of the male eating disorder sufferer and his personal struggles with food, weight and body issues. Its straightforward, raw and disturbing personal story is further strengthened by Henning's spiritual, physical and emotional recovery and revelations toward healing, powerfully outlined in his wonderful, practical and hopeful "16 Points." Male and female eating disorder sufferers alike will both be empowered and healed by reading this incredible recovery tool. Males,in particular, need to read this book and know that they are not alone; they are not hopeless either. It is a must for any recovery resource library, high school or college health class or program, as well as for anyone who is touched by the struggle of eating disorders. This book proves that it is not just a "woman's issue!" It is a must read!

The Power of Experience

Review Date: 2005-08-24
Through the power of his experience, Dennis Henning has written a very personal story about his battle with an eating disorder. His story is a stunning display of a long-practiced dysfuntion and--thank God!--an equally stunning recovery. Henning reveals his own private road to hell. Eating and purging became a way of life. As his life spun out of control, he also became addicted to sex. Everybody else was to blame for his problems which, as time went on, included prostitution, stealing, lying, manipulating--anything to numb the emotional pain of his self-hate and doubt.
It takes a lot of courage to tell a story like this one, a lot of honest reflection and inner work on the self: You really have TO WANT TO CHANGE your behavior, to change the way you think about yourself, to learn self-love. Dennis eventually creates a healthy life by getting in touch with good people who care about him. He opened up his mind to a much bigger world--the one beyond that crippling world of fear. He stopped blaming others for all his problems.
Through the clarity of his unique perspective, Henning turned his life around and grew into a compassionate human being. He began to trust his feelings, to get to know himself. He found a spirtual life that he can rely on no matter what. He now uses his life as a tool for helping others overcome debiliatating eating disorders. Anyone with an eating disorder--male or female--should read this book. You are not alone. Reading this book can be the first step in your recovery.

Dennis shares his pain and suffering from self-famine in such a courageous raw and vulnerable fashion. Unfotunately, so few men have shared their experience of suffering from eating disorder behavior and this book helps fill in much needed and long awaited personal recovery by a male. My hope is that his honnesty and life-learned wisdom can help others seek solutions to their own healing and perhaps along their journey, utilize some of Dennis's ideas as a template. I felt empathy, hope, and joy as Dennis shared his story of recovery.

An eye opening book! Raw honesty that was spine chilling. I admired Dennis' openess in telling his story and believe it will help others to come out from "underneath the table." Even if a male does not have an eating disorder, but has issues about his appearance, physique, masculinity and self-worth, this book will shake him awake and help him focus on what really matters in life.

I did the Hoffman Process almost three years ago and have referred many people to it since then. I can, with an open heart, honestly say that doing the Process was the biggest gift I could have ever given myself, my parents and all the people I love. If you have a voice within that is searching for something and you just don't know what it is -then consider the Process. The only way I can describe it is as the imperative missing link to the million piece puzzle that made up me and my life. The Process is loving and very powerful and was the key to organic lasting change for me.

I just bought this book a few days ago because of the glowing reccomendation on the front cover by Joan Borysenko, and because it claims to contain "the world-famous technique that empowers you to forgive your past, heal your present and trasform your future." I have been on a healing path for 5 years and I've read many books---and there's nothing new contained in this book. It's a pretty typical primer for basic life healing. If you are brand new to any form of therapy, or self-help techniques you will probably find this book helpful, but if you are already on the path or you have particularly agressive ego defenses in place---this book will feel (and be, because I have already done everything the author suggests) simplistic.

For example, the author described a long-term smoker who wanted to quit, who had lots of reasons and was clear that he hated the habbit, but who just couldn't do it. The author suggested that everytime he had a cigarette, he sit and explore the circumstances that triggered his desire to smoke. After a few days the man realized he wanted to smoke whenever he felt nervous or socially uncomfortable. The smoker then decided to start throwing dinner parties to counter his social discomfort and as a result he soon quit smoking. Just like magic. Does that sound liek something that might help you? If so---this is your book.

The author basically lays out the process like this: Figure out what you want to chang in your life and what your personality defect are (he has a list to choose from if you're coming up short). Analyze where you got the problem to begin with (the book assets point blank, your parents) forgive your parents, forgive yourself, decide what you want for your future, visualize it, give back old habbits to the people who taught them to you via declaration that you don't want them anymore, and you will naturally change. There is nothing more than this.

The author writes, "when we are finally able to come to terms with blocked or unhealthy emotions and to replace them with loving acceptance, the healing process will have worked deep within us. We will be able to love and accept love, the untimate lesson of our lives." --Not what I would call a profound statement, but this is the depth of advice you should expect from reading this book. Lots of feel good, catchy little quotes from other authors (the author is not a therapist or guru) who seemed like their books would be better, and generic advice meant to cover a broad spectrum of issues, and to make you feel better about yourself. But transform your future? I don't know about that. But I do know that if I had not hi-lighted a few sentences in the begining of the book, before I realized it was not going to address my issue with any depth, I would have returned it for my $$ back.

Hoffman Process extracts the psychic scream/root of pain

Have you ever noticed that no matter how much you know ... it doesn't make a difference? Have you struggled with very long-standing childhood-based hurts that no amount of seminars, workshops, support groups, or counselling has been able to help resolve 100%?

If you find yourself on a seemingly endless search for healing without permanent measureable relief then the Hoffman Process may be for you. The Hoffman Process has been described as the world's best kept secret. Presented in an 8-day residential retreat around the world, the process has been endorsed and advocated by many medical doctors, psychologists, and others in the healing profession. Known for its breakthrough results and ability to gently "crack the hardest nut (no pun intended)", the Hoffman Process helps participants achieve a connection with self by releasing decades of hurt, anger, resentment, vindictiveness, and other destructive negative emotions and behaviors. People from all walks of life have benefited from this remarkable loving program.

I am a graduate of the Hoffman Process and truly believe this is the only method that fully releases people of the roots of pain, anger, and the torture of negativity. The beauty of the process is that it connects the head and the heart while removing destructive self-sabotage patterns that one has believed ingrained in themselves. Hoffman produces a powerful relief. It is not a cure-all, and one has to do the work to get the benefit, but nothing else I have tried has brought to me such a sweet place of serene tranquility and joy. For those of you who have tried all sorts of healing methods and still are plagued with inner struggle ... I highly urge you to consider the Hoffman Process. The Institute in the US offers scholarships and there are financing options in both Canada and the US. There is a fresh air of sincerity, open-hearted, and authentic realism in the Hoffman Institute staff and its teachers.

Unlike some programs of positive thinking or human potential peak performance, there is no hard sales tactics, no manipulation to take more courses, no fostering co-dependancy, no coercion in getting your friends to do courses, or any other uncomfortable tactics.

Hoffman is a a gentle, loving, cleansing, mind-body-soul techniques endorsed by some of the most prominant names in medicine and psychology today. There is a freedom of choice and a freedom to be, that in itself is a journey of gold!

This is a must read for those committed to self-growth and/or are Hoffman graduates.

Isn't it time to be free of unhealthy core issues rather than just successfully coping and palliating them?

I was pleasantly surprised about the content in this book and how well it was organized. One of my favorite chapters was the one with the cross-reference to a dog's body for massage and acupressure therapy points. The graphic was very detailed; the description of how to do massages for specific areas and what it would accomplish was very good. This was something I've never seen covered with such detail in other books about dog care.

I would consider this a very strong complimenting book to go with Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.

This truly is a "Holistic" book, encompassing all areas of sharing your life with a dog. Denise Flaim delves into topics like nutrition, training, communication, vaccinations, allergies, Traditional Chinese Medicine, cancer and "finding the perfect vet" (to name a few). This book is also crammed pack full of herbal remedies and essential oil healing therapies. And at the same time, I find her writing style to be friendly and encouraging--not judgemental of the reader for picking one thing over another. And at the same time, encouraging the reader to find the "right balance" for you and your canine companion.

I do not plan to practice healing through herbal and essential oil therapies on my own, but I do plan to seek out a holistic vet who will offer me these options for treating conditions and ailments of our canine friend.

After a long and courageous fight, our Chihuahua finally went to eternal rest one week ago today. During his 13 years, he was consistently put on drugs like cortisone, prednisone and antibiotics to relieve him of symptoms like skin allergies, anal gland problems, nasal congestion, etc. All of which finally manifested into Inflammatory Brain Disease. I am finally realizing that I probably could have prevented most if not all this by providing a more nutritious diet. I believe in the philosophy that symptoms are just what we see on the surface of a more fundamental problem and by using drugs like these to provide temporary comfort does not always address the root cause.

I borrowed this book from my library, but now after reading it cover-to-cover, I will purchase a copy to go along with Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. Between these two books, and a partner relationship with a good holistic vet, I am better prepared to make decisions about our companion's health and happiness.

Ms. Flaim's book is very well researched and packed with valuable information from the nation's leading experts. this is a great book for someone who is interested in alternative medicine, but knows little about it (like me). before I purchased this book I had purchased another book about cat & dog homeopathy that while very comprehensive, was not very easy to understand. this book however, very clearly and concisely explains the "who, what, when, where, and how" of not only homeopathy, but also alternatives including (but not limited to): herbology, aromatherapy, chinese medicine, accupuncture, etc. The book takes the approach of trying to convince someone slightly skeptical (again, like myself) of the merit and value of these therapies, and it does a very good job! in addtion to those topics it also covers nutrition and general health (lightly), and tackles everything with a good dose of common sense. very informative, and well written. highly recommended!

I found this book to be truly informative, spiritual, and humorous. My Aunt always tells me that God has the answers to all our problems. Well, the good Doctor has convinced me! Dr. Eaker uses the bible to show us that God does have a plan in PMS andMenopause. This is one of my favorite quotes from the book; it is the twenty-third Psalms, from the bible, with a little Eaker touch!"The Lord is my shepherd: I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; (even with hot flashes) He leads me beside peaceful streams. (in the middle of night sweats) He renews my strength. (when fatigue takes over) He guides me along right paths, brining honor to his name. (shows me options) Even when I walk, through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. (depression cannot rule me) Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. (herbs and vitamins too) You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You welcome me as a guest, anointing my head with oil. (flaxseed, Chamomile) My cup overflows with blessings. (At least I am here to experience Menopause, the other option is not so great) Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days Of my life, And I will live in the house of the Lord forever. (wrinkles and all)One thing I really liked about this book is the fact that the author fully expects us to get as much knowledge on our health and to act on it. He does not expect us to use himself as our sole source of information. He is quick to point out that WE control our way ofthinking. Some restructuring of how we think could alleviate a big portion of the symptoms associated with PMS and Perimenopause. I have always thought along these lines, but never seemed to fully achieve my goals. Dr. Eaker tells us how. He shows us some very realistic goals, and how to best achieve them, by taking them one at a time! Dr. Eaker understands that we cannot make all lifestyle changes in over night, and that we need to take them step-by-step.Dr. Eaker is quick to offer advice on methods to dealing with PMS and menopause, be it hormonal therapy or herbs, diet, and our spiritual well-being. He is a wealth of information on other sources to gather the information we seek, the bible, other publications, and of course the Internet, with some sites provided.Thank you Dr. Eaker for helping me to see the things that were just beyond my view, and teaching me what I need to do to help myself through PMS and later, the glory that can be found in menopause.

This is a truly unique book in the world of PMS and Menopause. Ron has done an excellant job of explaining, from a biblical perspective as well as very balanced and sound medical insight, that there is a way around experincing all of the moans and groans of this changing "season" in all women's lives. If only more women knew that there were alternatives to the "it's time to take hormones" regime which seems to be so prevalent in today's world this world would be better off. He emphasizes what diet and lifestyle changes will do to improve so many of the problems associated with PMS and Menopause. He also shares wonderful and much needed information in the area of working with the body as well as trying natural herbs and supplements BEFORE resorting to drugs. His emphasis on the healing power of prayer is being proven today in many medical studies ... finally! Please, please buy this book if you care about your health! It will help you!

This is an excellent book and I recommend it highly! This book is well worth the money & time to read. This is not just another "menopause" book but rather describes this transition in a positive light -- using diet, exercise, alternative approaches, & prayer to achieve wellness. I have found it very helpful dealing with perimenopause & PMS.

What an incredible book. Every aspect of natural healing and real answers to dealing with menopause and being a woman. Dr. Eaker is amazingly intuitive, funny and compassionate. I can't begin to tell you the difference this book made in my life. Highly recommended read for all of my friends and in fact, my teenage daughter has used her highlighter freely throughout my personal copy. I need to get her one of her own. To Dr. Eaker and Susan, thank you.

A Review of Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus

An assertion of this book is that dating is disappearing. So now parents don't have to think about their older children getting into casual sexual relations. Wrong, suggests the author.

With dating, males make significant efforts; gather money, transportation, etc to make a date possible. Dating was a test of a male's ability to manage resources. This was true in colleges where males were a majority during the 20th century.

Males are in the minority in colleges in the 21st century; 40% to 60% females, typically. Males are "scarcer" and no longer have an edge in jobs as they used to. Male resources are no longer larger than those of the females.

These conditions have led to less dating and now females often have to now seek out a male if they want a relationship with one. Also, males "pick and choose" more often than they ever did in the past. Even if a female might want to see the same male repeatedly, the male is freer than ever to opt out. Instead, the male can opt for brief sexual encounters with different females.

Hence, we have the "hook-up." This serious sounding term is actually vague as it can mean getting together for just kissing and necking or it can mean sexual intercourse. It is not a repeated relationship with the same person. In fact, some females might wind up waiting for a "call" to "come over" and "hook up," with just a simple text message.

This situation is gloomy for a female looking for a marriage mate. Options seem few. The writer of this review suspects that females asking males out on dates might be an effective option.

The author of this book uses stories of people that she has interviewed to describe details without elaborate statistics. She also describes her methods of getting students to "tell all," interesting to people doing surveys. Overall, the book is good for keeping up with the Gen Y culture...

This book gives an overview of the college social structure that exists and specifically, the opportunities collegians have for sexual and dating relationships. While informative and highly anecdotal, the information is repetitive and could be much more concise. Recommended for those about to enter the college scene, either as students or parents, and to administrators looking to understand the dominant culture today.

'Hooking Up' is a wonderfully written investigation of "the new dating": what it is, how it works, and the effects that it has on the young men and women (who are either willingly or unwillingly caught up in the hook up culture). Dr. Bogle interviews both college students and recent alumni during her research and lets these voices shine through in her work. This book in interesting, relevant, and insightful. I would recommend it to anyone interested in college life, male/female relations, or contemporary culture in general.

EVERY college student should this book, even if you are not a part of the hook-up culture. This book is very, very interesting and honest. Bogle is one of the few people to do research on hooking up on campus and her method of approach was really effective and intriguing. Bogle interviewed students from a large state college and a private univeristy on the college hook up culture and dating scene. She includes snippets of her interviews throughout the book, making it a really great page-turner. The answers are so interesting, proving that Bogle is an excellent researcher and interviewer.

I came across Bogle's book while I was doing some researching for an article on drunk text messaging. I even got the chance to speak with her about the college hook-up scene. If anything is for sure, this woman is brilliant and knows exactly what she is talking about!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone but I especially college students who might need some perspective on their own relationships.

A no-nonsense approach to better health with out going crazy exercising. I have studied nutrition for over 26 years and this really makes a lot of sense. M.D.'s that also have a nutritional background would have a hard time arguing that this isn't beneficial and the book is endorsed by one. The book explains the details of what the briefing on PBS covered. After a few days of following I already feel better. I am anxious to have my cholesterol checked after following the formula for a month.

Finally - A real solution!

My husband's gastroenterologist sent him for every high-tech test which cost our insurance co. thousands of dollars to try to diagnose his abdominal discomfort. Absolutely no conclusions were reached by 3 M.D.'s and my husband's extreme pain continued for 2 year. The "purple pill" was recently prescribed by the family M.D. and the side effects became worse than the problem.

Lo and behold we heard of Brenda Watson's H.O.P.E. formula about 6 weeks ago and the change has been phenomenal. The cause of his problem is so clearly explained by Brenda and the solution has been easy to implement. Brenda Watson is a Godsend to anyone experiencing abdominal discomfort and she does a great job in this book.

Signed,
One grateful family!

This book was required reading from an endocrinologist I was seeing and I'm so very glad that I read it cover to cover. I learned SO much about my hormone issues and was able to help figure out what was going on with my husband and his hormone issues. It made the remainder of his life bearable. I keep this book for reference and use it often. I bought and gave one to my primary care doctor and he said it has enlightened him on hormone issues with patients. We are so blessed that Dr. Thierry Hertoghe chose to share his knowledge with us to help as many people as possible to feel better and have quality of life. Best hormone book I have ever read!!

Learning about hormonal deficienties

Review Date: 2007-05-15
This book is clearly written. The author makes it possible for everyone to get a clue about which hormones might be missing in his/her body before visiting a health professional. Many health issues are covered with the specific hormonal deficienties. I found it very clarifying and it brought me a step forwards in my search for my lost health. I have read also the books of John R. Lee. The book of Thierry Hertoghe gives not so much information about what one can do self in comparison with the books of Lee on female issues.
in the meantime i go to his sister dr.Therese Hertoge for treatment, and i got much better.
