Healthy PleasuresReview Date: 2002-08-21
The book is divided up into three parts and each of those has chapters relative to the topic. Healthy Pleasures proposes a new approach to the way women and men manage their health. This book is a readers guide through the maze of myths and misconceptions that stand in the way of health.
In the book the reader will find scores of practical suggestions, based on recent scientific discoveries, on how to live in a way that enriches, rather than just maintains, health: ways to mobilize positive beliefs, expectations, and emotions... from cognitive therapy, relaxation training, and successful behavior modification practices.
Because people are naturally drawn by the pleasure principle to many of the things which promote health, this makes the book easy to follow. The emphasis of this book is the importance of pleasing rather than punishing ourselves... food, drink, rest, work, sunrises and sunsets, too... in a refreshing affectionate light found in the brain's pleasure centers.
A truly healing bookReview Date: 2004-01-05
This is a profoundly healing message. It tells us not to be hard on ourselves, or on others. Not to blame ourselves or set up hundreds of hoops to jump through. That's not the way to be healthy or happy. Make your life easier and better, and good health is likely (though not guaranteed) to follow.
I have used this approach in my life with multiple sclerosis, my health coaching practice and my wellness workshops for years now with wonderful results. My book, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness, puts Sobel and Ornstein's research into practice. I remain a big fan of Healthy Pleasures

How to Tap into Cosmic Wisdom and Live a Better Life!Review Date: 2008-11-23
It is an incredibly intimate revelation of something that most people go through during their lifetimes--sometimes many times--taken to the highest level of understanding and resolution by a writer who was able to rise from the depths of despair to a state of enlightenment that put her into contact with her innerself and with the cosmos at large.
It is an inspirational story that will benefit all who read it.

Hiding Under the Table- A Strong Voice for the Male Eating Disorder Sufferer!Review Date: 2006-12-23
The Power of ExperienceReview Date: 2005-08-24
It takes a lot of courage to tell a story like this one, a lot of honest reflection and inner work on the self: You really have TO WANT TO CHANGE your behavior, to change the way you think about yourself, to learn self-love. Dennis eventually creates a healthy life by getting in touch with good people who care about him. He opened up his mind to a much bigger world--the one beyond that crippling world of fear. He stopped blaming others for all his problems.
Through the clarity of his unique perspective, Henning turned his life around and grew into a compassionate human being. He began to trust his feelings, to get to know himself. He found a spirtual life that he can rely on no matter what. He now uses his life as a tool for helping others overcome debiliatating eating disorders. Anyone with an eating disorder--male or female--should read this book. You are not alone. Reading this book can be the first step in your recovery.

If you want to FEEL different -then do the Process!Review Date: 2006-03-24
Not great, not terribleReview Date: 2007-07-25
For example, the author described a long-term smoker who wanted to quit, who had lots of reasons and was clear that he hated the habbit, but who just couldn't do it. The author suggested that everytime he had a cigarette, he sit and explore the circumstances that triggered his desire to smoke. After a few days the man realized he wanted to smoke whenever he felt nervous or socially uncomfortable. The smoker then decided to start throwing dinner parties to counter his social discomfort and as a result he soon quit smoking. Just like magic. Does that sound liek something that might help you? If so---this is your book.
The author basically lays out the process like this: Figure out what you want to chang in your life and what your personality defect are (he has a list to choose from if you're coming up short). Analyze where you got the problem to begin with (the book assets point blank, your parents) forgive your parents, forgive yourself, decide what you want for your future, visualize it, give back old habbits to the people who taught them to you via declaration that you don't want them anymore, and you will naturally change. There is nothing more than this.
The author writes, "when we are finally able to come to terms with blocked or unhealthy emotions and to replace them with loving acceptance, the healing process will have worked deep within us. We will be able to love and accept love, the untimate lesson of our lives." --Not what I would call a profound statement, but this is the depth of advice you should expect from reading this book. Lots of feel good, catchy little quotes from other authors (the author is not a therapist or guru) who seemed like their books would be better, and generic advice meant to cover a broad spectrum of issues, and to make you feel better about yourself. But transform your future? I don't know about that. But I do know that if I had not hi-lighted a few sentences in the begining of the book, before I realized it was not going to address my issue with any depth, I would have returned it for my $$ back.

Hoffman Process extracts the psychic scream/root of painReview Date: 2005-01-15
If you find yourself on a seemingly endless search for healing without permanent measureable relief then the Hoffman Process may be for you. The Hoffman Process has been described as the world's best kept secret. Presented in an 8-day residential retreat around the world, the process has been endorsed and advocated by many medical doctors, psychologists, and others in the healing profession. Known for its breakthrough results and ability to gently "crack the hardest nut (no pun intended)", the Hoffman Process helps participants achieve a connection with self by releasing decades of hurt, anger, resentment, vindictiveness, and other destructive negative emotions and behaviors. People from all walks of life have benefited from this remarkable loving program.
I am a graduate of the Hoffman Process and truly believe this is the only method that fully releases people of the roots of pain, anger, and the torture of negativity. The beauty of the process is that it connects the head and the heart while removing destructive self-sabotage patterns that one has believed ingrained in themselves. Hoffman produces a powerful relief. It is not a cure-all, and one has to do the work to get the benefit, but nothing else I have tried has brought to me such a sweet place of serene tranquility and joy. For those of you who have tried all sorts of healing methods and still are plagued with inner struggle ... I highly urge you to consider the Hoffman Process. The Institute in the US offers scholarships and there are financing options in both Canada and the US. There is a fresh air of sincerity, open-hearted, and authentic realism in the Hoffman Institute staff and its teachers.
Unlike some programs of positive thinking or human potential peak performance, there is no hard sales tactics, no manipulation to take more courses, no fostering co-dependancy, no coercion in getting your friends to do courses, or any other uncomfortable tactics.
Hoffman is a a gentle, loving, cleansing, mind-body-soul techniques endorsed by some of the most prominant names in medicine and psychology today. There is a freedom of choice and a freedom to be, that in itself is a journey of gold!
This is a must read for those committed to self-growth and/or are Hoffman graduates.
Isn't it time to be free of unhealthy core issues rather than just successfully coping and palliating them?

The Holistic Dog Book: Canine Care for the 21st CenturyReview Date: 2008-07-05
Excellent Holistic dog care for the 21st CenturyReview Date: 2003-04-10
Excellent book that covers all areas of having a healthy dog!Review Date: 2006-02-04
This truly is a "Holistic" book, encompassing all areas of sharing your life with a dog. Denise Flaim delves into topics like nutrition, training, communication, vaccinations, allergies, Traditional Chinese Medicine, cancer and "finding the perfect vet" (to name a few). This book is also crammed pack full of herbal remedies and essential oil healing therapies. And at the same time, I find her writing style to be friendly and encouraging--not judgemental of the reader for picking one thing over another. And at the same time, encouraging the reader to find the "right balance" for you and your canine companion.
I do not plan to practice healing through herbal and essential oil therapies on my own, but I do plan to seek out a holistic vet who will offer me these options for treating conditions and ailments of our canine friend.
After a long and courageous fight, our Chihuahua finally went to eternal rest one week ago today. During his 13 years, he was consistently put on drugs like cortisone, prednisone and antibiotics to relieve him of symptoms like skin allergies, anal gland problems, nasal congestion, etc. All of which finally manifested into Inflammatory Brain Disease. I am finally realizing that I probably could have prevented most if not all this by providing a more nutritious diet. I believe in the philosophy that symptoms are just what we see on the surface of a more fundamental problem and by using drugs like these to provide temporary comfort does not always address the root cause.
I borrowed this book from my library, but now after reading it cover-to-cover, I will purchase a copy to go along with Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. Between these two books, and a partner relationship with a good holistic vet, I am better prepared to make decisions about our companion's health and happiness.

A Review of Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on CamopusReview Date: 2008-12-22
An assertion of this book is that dating is disappearing. So now parents don't have to think about their older children getting into casual sexual relations. Wrong, suggests the author.
With dating, males make significant efforts; gather money, transportation, etc to make a date possible. Dating was a test of a male's ability to manage resources. This was true in colleges where males were a majority during the 20th century.
Males are in the minority in colleges in the 21st century; 40% to 60% females, typically. Males are "scarcer" and no longer have an edge in jobs as they used to. Male resources are no longer larger than those of the females.
These conditions have led to less dating and now females often have to now seek out a male if they want a relationship with one. Also, males "pick and choose" more often than they ever did in the past. Even if a female might want to see the same male repeatedly, the male is freer than ever to opt out. Instead, the male can opt for brief sexual encounters with different females.
Hence, we have the "hook-up." This serious sounding term is actually vague as it can mean getting together for just kissing and necking or it can mean sexual intercourse. It is not a repeated relationship with the same person. In fact, some females might wind up waiting for a "call" to "come over" and "hook up," with just a simple text message.
This situation is gloomy for a female looking for a marriage mate. Options seem few. The writer of this review suspects that females asking males out on dates might be an effective option.
The author of this book uses stories of people that she has interviewed to describe details without elaborate statistics. She also describes her methods of getting students to "tell all," interesting to people doing surveys. Overall, the book is good for keeping up with the Gen Y culture...

A GREAT READ!!!Review Date: 2008-11-20
I came across Bogle's book while I was doing some researching for an article on drunk text messaging. I even got the chance to speak with her about the college hook-up scene. If anything is for sure, this woman is brilliant and knows exactly what she is talking about!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone but I especially college students who might need some perspective on their own relationships.

However, the book covers many more topics in emphasizing the importance of pleasure, including a focus on Work that makes and keeps us slaves to industry while cutting us off from significant others in our lives.
The authors aren't proponents of hedonism, but suggest that if we buy into conventional wisdom, we miss out on the joy life has to offer without any real improvement in our health or longevity.
